Game #2: | Vir – 8 Sev – 6 The James Loney Show. A game that appeared to be well in hand for SEV went all askew in the bottom of the 9th as James Loney hit a walk-off 3-run homer. SEV jumped out with 6 runs in the first 4 innings and held a 6-3 lead. Bur VIR kept scratching back to make it 6-5 going to the bottom of the 9th. Game #3: | Sev – 4 Vir – 1 D.Phelps gave up just 4 hits in 7.2 innings and Broxton recovered from the last game to bounce back with his 2nd Save of the year. Fremont Cannons @ Dallas Cougars | |
Series Preview | Both teams limped into this series as each had won just one game. The Cannons were on a 4 game losing streak while Dallas had lost five in a row. At least Fremont had done a little something offensively entering the series 4th in batting at .255 and 4th in on base percentage. |
Game #1: | Bad pitching and bad defense contribute to Dallas losing their home opener. Seven Cannon hitters had multiple hits as they pound the Cougars with 18 total hits. Final Score: FRE 11 – DAL 3. |
Game #2: | Billingsley pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout while striking out 6 for the Cannons as the Cougars losing streak reaches 7 games. Final Score: FRE 5 – DAL 0 |
Game #3: | Dallas starter Volstad looked pretty good until things fell apart in the 5th. With one out after Gomez had tied the game by leading off the inning with his first homer of the year and Morneau had followed with a single Volstad decked Barajas who had some choice words for Volstad as he was still yelling at him as he entered the dugout. The umpires gave a warning to both teams. The next hitter, Escobar reached on an error by Ellis to load the bases and then Phillips cleared them with 3-run scoring triple. Blanco hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 5th, but Dallas allowed another crooked number in the 8th as Fremont wins their 3rd straight. Final score: FRE 7 – DAL 3 |

Game #5: | Marquis pitching instead of Corbin who was tired pitched much better in this game than the opener, but couldn’t get the complete game victory as both teams were tied at 3 at the end of 9 innings. In the top of the 14th Rosario led off with a home run against Owings to win it for the Cannons. Dallas had a chance in the bottom of the 14th as they had a runner on third with one out, but a strike out and line out put an end to that possibility. The Cougars losing streak reaches 10 games. Final score FRE 4 – DAL 3 |
Game #6: | The Cougars score 4 in the first highlighted by a 3-run blast from Rasmus and Corbin feeling good with an extra day of rest blanks Fremont through 7 plus innings as Dallas wins their first home game of the year. Final Score DAL 5 – FRE 2 |
Game #7: | Good pitching performance from both starting pitchers as both only allowed 3 runs although two of those runs were unearned for Billingsley. Germano struck out 15 hitters for Dallas. Still tied at 3 it looked like another extra inning affair when Martinez came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 9th for the Cougars, “CROW kicks and deals … a blast to right … no doubt about this one … it’s all over! it’s gone! … way over the fence … home run for MARTINEZ … Michael trots around the bases he loves a trip downtown … he claps his hands … his teammates mob him at home plate!” Final Score DAL 4 – FRE 3 |
Series Summary * | Fremont wins the first five games before Dallas takes the last two. For the series Fremont hit .303 with 14 doubles, 3 triples, and 7 homers. They also stole 7 bases while Dallas hit only .210 with 7 doubles and 5 homers. The Cougars did manage to steal 10 bases, but some of that was the result of failed hit and run plays. Pitching wise the Cannons had a team ERA of 2.03 while striking out 49 and the Cougars had a team ERA of 4.58 striking out 62. |
