New York Outlaws @ Iron City Yinzers
Series Preview | The New York Outlaws come to Iron City, the Yinzers largely forget that the objective is score runs, with the Outlaws winning the series, 4-3. |
Game #1: | Outlaws 3, Yinzers 2WP: Cole Hamels, 1-0 LP: Jeremy Hellickson, 0-1 SV: Glen PerkinsThe season opener was a pitcher’s battle, or a lack of offense battle, depending on your point of view. Iron City couldn’t get much done against Hamels, who went seven, allowing just one run on three hits, walking none and striking out four. Jeremy Hellickson went 6 2/3, allowing three runs (two earned) on two walks and six hits while striking out five. Brandon Crawford had two doubles for New York and Mike Napoli drove in a pair. Delmon Young’s homer off of Hamels in the fifth was the lone offensive bright spot for the Yinzers. |
Game #2: | Outlaws 1, Yinzers 0WP: Jake Peavy, 1-0 LP: Paul Maholm, 0-1If the start of the season is any indication, Yinzer fans won’t have a lot of offense to cheer about. Peavy went the distance on a two-hitter, striking out 10 while walking two. Maholm was the tough-luck loser, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out eight over eight innings. Steve Pearce drove in the lone run of hte game. |
Game #3: | Yinzers 3, Outlaws 1WP: Sergio Romo, 1-0 LP: Wandy Rodriguez, 0-1 SV: Ernesto Frieri, 1The flooodgates opened as Iron City piled on with three whole runs in one game. They call came late, as they scored once in the seventh and twice in the eighth off of Rodriguez. Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run homer in the eighth to give the Yinzers the win. Lance Lynn started for Iron City and went six strong, allowing one run on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out five. From there the Iron City bullpen, which had a strong reputation entering the city, shut the door with three innings of shutout ball. |
Game #4: | Yinzers 7, Outlaws 2WP: Drew Smyly, 1-0 LP: Dillon Gee, 0-1Iron City evened the series at two games apiece by scoring three in the first and four in the fourth to make a winner out of Smyly, who tossed six shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks wile striking out five. The Yinzers hit four homers off of Gee, the big blow coming from Steve Lombardozzi, who used his first start of the year to hit a grand slam. Alex Rios, AJ Pierzynski and David Murphy all went deep. The Outlaws plated two runs in the ninth on Brandon Crawford’s two-run double. |
Game #5: | Outlaws 14, Yinzers 2WP: LeBlanc, 1-0 LP: Westbrook, 0-1So much for momentum. New York scored touchdowns in the 1st and 3rd quarters…oh, wait. It was a 10-run third inning that did it, with Westbrook being left out there to suffer the punishment, allowing 13 earned runs over five innings. New York had 15 hits, led by Chase Utley’s two homers and five RBIs. Brandon Crawford, making a claim for Player of the Week honors, went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs and a homer as well. LeBlanc went eight shutout innings for the win. |
Game #6: | Outlaws 10, Yinzers 6, 10 inn.WP: Kenly Jansen, 1-0 LP: Jason Frasor, 0-1New York ensured a series win by scoring four in the 10th inning against the aforementioned vaunted Yinzer bullpen. This was a seesaw battle, with Iron City jumping out to a 4-0 lead against Cole Hamels, only to see Jeremy Hellickson cough up the lead in the fourth and fifth. The Outlaws took a lead, only to have Jansen cough it up by allowing tying runs in the eighth and ninth (NY scored to take a lead in the top of the ninth). Brandon Inge hit two homers, while David Ortiz, Mike Napoli and Andruw Jones also went yard. Alex Rios hit his second homer of the series and drove in four, while Elvis Andrus had three hits atop the lineup for the Yinzers. |
Game #7: | Yinzers 4, Outlaws 3WP: Mike Adams, 1-0 LP: Doug Slaten, 0-1Iron City was able to salvage the final game of the series with a run in the bottom of the ninth to end what had been a 3-3 ballgame. Jake Peavywent six for New York, but then left with injury, an ailment that will keep him out for 13 days. Paul Maholm pitched well again for the Yinzers, going six frames and allowing two runs on six hits, walking none and striking out eight. Carlos Gonzalez, AJ Pierzynski and Elvis Andrus all drove in runs for Iron City. |
Columbus Explorers @ Tempe Tempers
Game #1: | Harrell vs. Cain – Tempe scored five runs in the first two innings and knocked out Harrell. Cain went 7 scoreless innings for win and Jim Johnson recorded the save. Tempe 5-1. |
Game #2: | Milone vs. Iwakuma – Beltre broke up a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 6th with two run HR. The Explorers rallied back with 4 runs capped by a 3 run homerun by Desmond. Holland, the winner of Reliever of the Year in 2012 left the game with a 108.00 ERA and the game tied 5-5. Tempe loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but Gonzalez flied out to the wall. The game remained tied until the bottom of the 13th, when Matt Cain pinch hit for pitcher Jim Johnson and signaled in the winning run from 3B. Tempe 6-5 in 13 Innings. |
Game #3: | Chen vs. Chen – Lefty vs. Lefty – Battle of the Ages (not really) – Eric Young Jr tripled to tie the game at 1-1 and then scored on a single to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead. Soriano added a 2 run hr in the 7th. Tempe rallied for two in the bottom of the 9th, but came up one short Belisario finally got the last out with two on. Columbus 4-3 |
Game #4: | Bass vs. Colon – The game was tied 4-4 with 4 lead changes in 4 innings. Then the Explorers crushed the Tempe pen and rolled to 9-5 win with homeruns from Soriano and Eric Young Jr. |
Game #5: | Happ vs. Cain – Cain went 7 strong innings only giving up one run. Williamson and Johnson were perfect in the 8th and 9th. Tempe 3-1 |
Game #6: | Harrell vs. Iwakuma – Harrell didn’t allow a run until the 7th, but Iwakuma out dueled him throwing a one hitter through 7. Williamson and Johnson were perfect in the 8th and 9th. Tempe 2-0 |
Game #7: | Milone vs. Chen – Chen pitched 8.2 shutout innings for the vicory. Johnson picked up his 4th save of the series when Chen tired in the 9th. Tempe 3-0 |
Manhattan Project @ Jersey Nor’easters
Series Preview | The sky is clear and the sun is out in N.W. New Jersey as the Jersey Nor’easters take on the Manhattan Project to open the 2013 MWBL season. |
Game #1: | An oddity to be sure as the Nor’easters come from behind on Reed Johnson’s 9th inning game winning triple and win the game 4-3. The oddity is that Burnett was the winning pitcher and Burnett was the losing pitcher (Sean and A.J.). |
Game #2: | The Project showed some fight and pounded the Nor’easters 13-0. John Buck had 7 rbi’s for Manhattan. Rick Porcello pitched 7 shutout innings for the win. |
Game #3: | Jersey returns to the heroics of game one by scoring 3 runs in the 7th for a 3-2 come from behind win. Choo had three hits for the Nor’easters. The bullpen pitched well as Brian Shaw gets the win and Sean Burnett picked up a save to go along with his first game win. Yu Darvish made his MWBL debut for the Project pitching well but ends up the victim of a blown save. |
Game #4: | Jersey pounds out 19 hits in a 13-3 win. Eight Nor’easters had 2 hits each. Jose Quintana makes his MWBL debut for the Nor’easters and picks up the win. |
Game #5: | Danny Duffy throws 8 innings of 2-hit shutout ball as Manhattan wins the game 3-0. The ageless Derek Lowe pitches well for Jersey but gets the loss. |
Game #6: | In a rematch of A.J. Burnett and Johnny Cueto from Game 1 the results are different. Scott Hairston hits a key 2-run homer, A.J. pitches well and Manhattan evens the series at 3 games each. |
Game #7: | The rubber game. Jersey’s Capuano and Manhattan’s Porcello square off in a rematch of game two. Shin-Soo Choo has 3 hits, 3 RBI and a homer to lead the Nor’easters to a 5-2 win. |
Series Summary | The Jersey Nor’easters win the series 4-3. |
Dallas Cougars @ Bethesda Bandicoots
Series Preview | The 2013 season opens in Bethesda with Joan Rivers throwing out the ceremonial first pitch as the Bandicoots host their cellar mates from 2012, the Dallas Cougars. |
Game #1: | Late-inning replacement Tony Cruz makes the most of his single at bat of the game with a two out single to bring home the winning run as Bethesda scores twice in the bottom of the 9th to open the season with a 5-4 over the Dallas Cougars. Yuniesky Betancourt had two hits for the Cougars including their first homer of the season off reliever Brett Myers. Jon Jay paced the Bethesda offense with a 3/5 performance. Win-S Kelley (1-0) Loss-F Francisco (0-1, BS-1) HR-Y Betancourt (1) |
Game #2: | Johnny Damon cracked a two-run pinch-hit home run in the top of the 9th to lift the Cougars to a 3-1 win against Bethesda. In pretty much a reversal of the prior game, game one winner Shawn Kelley became Bethesda’s goat when he gave up the gopher ball to old man Damon. Both runs wound up unearned, however, thanks to Brett Myers throwing error that set up the game-winning hit. For Dallas it was their Game one goat, Frank Francisco, who came in and shut down the Bandicoots to pick up the save. Starters Patrick Corbin and Erasmo Ramirez pitched did their parts for their teams. Corbin lasted 7 innings, giving up only one run on 8 hits while striking three out and walking none. Ramirez gave up only one run while striking out six and walking two Cougars in 5-1/3 innings of work. Win-M Owings (1-0) Sv-F Francisco (1) Loss-B Myers (0-1) HR-J Damon (1) |
Game #3: | Jon Jay collects four hits and scored twice and Fernando Martinez drives in a pair of runs to give the Bandicoots a 4-2 win over Dallas. The Cougars tried to mount a rally in the top of the 9th against the inept trampoliner Joba Chamberlain, but with two out and a man in scoring position Drew Storen came into the game and earned his 1st save of the season for Bethesda. Late-inning substitution Justin Maxwell was 2/2 for Dallas with a double. Win-M Estrada (1-0) Sv-D Storen (1) Loss-J Marquis (0-1) HR-D Barton (1) |
Game #4: | Starting pitchers Justin Germano and Alex Cobb got bitch-slapped good, but it was Bethesda that came out on top with an eventual 10-8 win in a rare offensive display against Dallas. Germano gave up seven runs on 11 hits in just over five innings while Cobb gave up five runs on 10 hits in just under five. Colby Rasmus did most of the slapping for Dallas with a pair of homers and four RBIs off Cobb. The offensive star for Bethesda was that Latin American juggernaut Jose Iglesias (only a slightly better hitter than Enrique) who singled and homered – yes, homered – drove in a pair of runs and did his part by getting plunked in the head once. In another unlikely event, Alfredo Aceves tossed 3-1/3 hitless innings of relief in which he also walked none and fanned five. Go figure. Win-A Aceves (1-0) Sv-D Storen (2) Loss-J Germano (0-1) HR-C Rasmus 2 (2); F Martinez (1), J Iglesias (1) |
Game #5: | Bethesda scores four times off Dallas started Chris Volstad in the 6th inning and hang on to win their third straight, 5-3. Everyone on the Bandicoots save for john Mayberry Jr. notched a hit while Dallas could only manage six hits with Ryan Doumit getting their only extra base hit, a double. Win-M Fiers (1-0) Sv-S Kelley (1) Loss-C Volstad (0-1) HR-K Johnson (1) |
Game #6: | Lorenzo Cain bashed a two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the 12th to lead the Bandicoots to a 3-1 victory over Dallas. The teams only managed to score during the first 9 innings by virtue on capitalizing on fielding errors. Yuniesky Betancourt’s hackysack playing with the ball in the 6th inning led to an unearned run by Bethesda and marred an otherwise great performance by Jeremy Guthrie who started for Dallas and pitched the full nine innings. Guthrie gave up six hits and one walk while fanning five. Brian Matusz’s 2nd start of the season for Bethesda lasted a full eight innings with the only run coming after Ryan Kalish’s flub on an easy fly ball in the 8th. Matusz struck out eight while allowing only five hits and one walk and lowered his ERA to 1.38, but was still outmatched by Guthrie who was down to 1.23 (don’t adjust your sets). Jon Jay left the game in the 1st inning after Guthrie clunked him and his .500 batting average right in the melon. Jay was expected to be about about one week. Win-S Kelley (2-0) Loss-P Coke (0-1) HR-L Cain (1) |
Game #7: | Erasmo Ramirez was fantastic for the Bandicoots, giving up only two hits as Bethesda finished off the series taking 6 of 7 against Dallas with a 2-1 win. Patrick Corbin went the distance for Dallas, allowing just two runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked just two. Lorenzo Cain continued his timely hitting, doubling home a run and scoring what would prove to be the game winner and adding an outfield error just for shits and giggles. Win-E Ramirez (1-0) Sv-D Storen (3) Loss-P Corbin (0-1) HR-none |
Camarillo Quest @ Sacramento Capitals
Series Preview | Camarillo heads north to Sacramento for a very fun series between two division rivals. Sacramento wins this one 4-3, with 6 of the seven games decided by 1 run. This was an unbelievably close one |
Game #1: | 6-5 (Camarillo) |
Game #2: | 1-0 (Camarillo) |
Game #3: | 0-1 (Sacramento) |
Game #4: | 10-9 (Sacramento) |
Game #5: | 3-2 (Sacramento) |
Game #6: | 7-6 (15 innings) (Sacramento) |
Game #7: | 7-2 (Camarillo |
Series Summary | The player of the series was Robinson Cano, who hit .467 with 7 2B, 3 HR, 6 R, 8 RBI, a .484 OBP and a 1.000 SLG. Not bad. Kyle Lohse was the pitcher of the game for Camarillo, going 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA in 17 IP. I don’t want to face him in the playoffs … |
Clovis @ Roseville | |
Series Summary | Â Â Roseville takes the series from Clovis 4 games to 3 in a tough series. |
Elyria @ Pittsburgh | |
Series Summary | Â Pittsburgh takes 4 of 7 in very shaky fashion. |
Selkirk Steelers @ Valdosta Snappers
Series Preview | Season opener for a couple of rebuilding teams. Selkirk was moved from Bay State in the off-season and changed from the Minute Men to the Steelers. They suffered through a 54-108 season in ’12 and in full rebuild mode. The Valdosta Snappers open the season in the new Doc Holliday Stadium (The famous dentist/gunslinger grew up in Valdosta, Georgia). Valdosta played to a 59-103 record in ’12 and are trying to build a solid young team. |
Game #1: | Valdosta wins the opener 4-1 behind Ryan Dempster (1-0) and Craig Kimbrell picked up his 1st save. In a trend that would continue, the Steelers swiped 6 bases. |
Game #2: | Valdosta wins 7-2 to make a winner of Travis Wood. New Snapper Carlos Pena had a tremendous afternoon with a grand slam and a 2-run HR knocking in 6. |
Game #3: | Snappers win 4-0 behind the stellar 6 hit 10 K performance of Carlos Zambrano. |
Game #4: | Selkirk gets the 1st win in their history with a 4-1 decision. Gavin Floyd got the win and was aided by HR’s from Bogusevic, Santiago and Kotsay. |
Game #5: | The Steelers swipe 5 bases enroute to a 5-3 win. |
Game #6: | Steelers win 3-2 in 11 Innings as Howell picks up his 2nd save in as many days. |
Game #7: | Josh Johnson was the tough luck loser as Juan Francisco hit a solo blast to win the game for the Snappers in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. Johnson went the distance allowing just 5 hits, 1 BB while striking out 12 turtles and he dropped to 0-2 on the year. |
Series Summary * | Valdosta takes 4 of 7 thanks in part to Pitcher of the Week nominee Carlos Zambrano. |
