Summary: Selkirk wins 4 of the 6 to reach 109 wins! Alonso reaches 41 homers and 120 rbis Garcia 30/30, Semien 25/25 and Betts 39 homers. Fried 21-3 Cease 23-8

Long Beach  Dirt Bags @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Summary: Patriots take the first 5 and lose a crazy extra inning finale that featured more than 30 hits between the teams.

Portland  Lumber Jax @ Sacramento  Capitals

Summary: Sacramento takes 4 of 6 from Portland.

Southbend  Lynx @ Hollywood  Werewolves

Summary: Hollywood sweeps to end the season. Shane McClanahan throws a complete game no-hitter in game 2. Not something I like to do in the last series, but I couldnt take him out with Kershaw watching. Judge only hit 3 homers to finish with 55. Everyone not worn out played in the last game, like I always do if home on 162 and it means nothing.

Tempe  Tempers @ Columbus  Explorers

Preview: OK – it’s rest some players for Tempe (and Columbus) – but it’s Tempers vs. Explorers, there’s a lot of rivalry here. And Goliath is throwing his great starters (and resting a lot of bullpen). Columbus is throwing a 3, 4, and two 5s plus a 9 and 12. What kind of series will we have? Three 2 hitters, two 3 hitters, 3 1-0 games, 1 extra inning 1 run game and 2 2 run games – OH AND YES a NO-HITTER!
Game #1: Nick Martinez vs. Logan Gilbert. Martinez is excellent going 7.1, 3 hits, 7 ks – NO RUNS. Gilbert is better, 9 innings, 2 hits, no runs, 6 ks. 9th inning heroics win the game as Solano doubles off Munoz, Duran in to PR and after a Varsho 1 out walk, Enrique Hernandez singles scoring Duran for a 1-0 walk-off Columbus win.
TEM 0-2-1 LP Munoz (3-5)
COL 1-5-1 WP Gilbert (15-8)
Game #2: Well can we get any tenser (or more tense)? Justin Verlander (28-1) vs. Jose Urquidy (13-9). Verlander is Verlander going 8, 2 hits, a walk and 6 ks. The hits came in the 2nd, with Delay getting a single and Tapia smashing an rbi double. That was it for Columbus. Ummm, except Urquidy pitches 9 innings, giving up 6 hits (2 to Ramirez, 2 to Kwan) and 1 walk – and NO RUNS!! 2nd straight 1-0 Columbus win! What???
TEM 0-6-2 LP Verlander (28-2) (28 and 2 – wow!!!) ERA 1.02 double WOW!!!
COL 1-2-1 WP Urquidy (14-9)
Peralta was HBP by Urquidy and will miss the rest of the series with 5 day injury.
Game #3: Jacob deGrom vs. Jordan Lyles Will Tempe finally score a run? Top of the 2nd Slater singles with 1 out. Ramirez doubles, Slater stops at 3rd. What’s this, Columbus calls on Jimmy Herget! Freeman up – walks to load the bases. J.D. Martinez up – hits it down the line inside 3rd – Urshela backhands it and fires home – OUT. Albies then flies out to end the threat. Will Tempe ever score? Top 5 Columbus brings in Abreu and with 2 outs Ramirez walks. He steals 2nd with Freeman up (why don’t we walk Freeman?). Guess it was so Freeman could get a single and drive in Ramirez for the 1st Tempe run of the game (and series). 1-0 Tempe Stays that way until Enrique Hernandez hits a 1 out homer (6) in the bottom of the 6th. 1st Columbus hit of the game and it ties it up 1-1. A.J. Minter is called on immediately – deGrom is done – Minter gives up a hit to close out the 6th but nothing more for Columbus. Explorers then trot out their bullpen and blank the Tempers through the 12th. Well, the Tempe bullpen does the same thing – and they do it giving up no hits! So, Wantz is in for Columbus starting his 3rd inning in the 13th. Ozzie Albies opens the inning with a single. Kwan draws a walk and Wantz leaves and Cishek comes in. He gets Pinder to whiff. Oh then he fans Molina! Xander Bogaerts up, little looper to left. Hernandez (SS) looks like he’ll get it going for a Willie Mays over the shoulder catch – it drops and both runners move up 2 bases with Albies scoring the go ahead run. Slater then walks but Ramirez grounds out to end the inning. But it’s 2-1 Tempe. Jimenez on the mound – his 4th inning of relief. But he’s up to the task – 1,2, 3 game over.
TEM 2-11-1 WP Jimenez (3-2) 13 innings
COL 1- 2- 1 LP Wantz (3-4)
Game #4: Martin Perez (26-5) vs. Josh Winder (12-6) Only noting the W/L because has 26 (oh that would be nice to have). Another slow start for the offenses as Josh Winder has been the low grade wonder for Columbus this year (we always seem to have 1 unexplained hero). He gets a bit of support in the 4th when Blackmon double and LeBlanc follows with an rbi single. 1-0 Columbus. Top of the 7th, Winder cruising when he gives up a 1 out walk to Slater. Well I mention that because that is the ONLY BASE RUNNER they get in the game as Winder tosses a NO-HITTER!!! 12 Ks, 1 walk, 28 BF! Maybe he’ll get another Pitcher of the week! And what about Perez – 7 ip, 3 hits, 1 run, 6Ks but he loses…..
TEM 0-0-0 LP Perez (26-5)
COL 1-3-0 WP Winder (13-6)Well can Tempe get some runs. Darvish (24-5) what another high 20 game winner vs. Corey Abbot (2-3)
Well Slater decides to break up the no-hitter and shutout very early smacking a solo homer (3) with 1 out in the 1st! However, Odubel Herrera follows suit with a 1 out homer (5) in the bottom half! Really? Well Tempe gets a 2nd homer, J.D. Martinez (9) in the 5th to make it 2-1. Then they plated 3 in the 6th and built a 5-1 lead. Darvish goes 7 – 1 hit, that homer. Bass pitches a 3 K perfect 8th. And Jimenez comes in for the 9th – and it gets exciting. Blackmon hits a single with 1 out driving in 1, but we hold Machin at 3rd. It was our 2nd run so it’s 5-3 and Solano up. We should have sent him and changed the options because Solano hits into game ending DP! Tempe wins their 2nd game of the series.
TEM 5-8-0 WP Darvish (25-5)
COL 3-3-1 LP Abbott (2-4)
Game #5: Well can Tempe get some runs.
TEM 5-8-0 WP Darvish (25-5)
COL 3-3-1 LP Abbott (2-4)
Game #6: Final game of the regular season – Nick Martinez (7-3) vs. Paulo Espino (6-10)
Columbus starts the scoring on a 2 run Blackmon double in the 2nd. Tempe gets it right back on a Xander Bogaerts homer (10) in the 3rd. Then Kwan singles and Columbus brings in Herget! He stops the bleeding. And Columbus gets the run back in the bottom half and it’s 3-1 Columbus after 3. Columbus keeps shuffling relievers and it’s still 3-1 going into the 7th. Hamilton gets a lead-off single then Bogaerts whiffs – and Abreu comes in to pitch for Columbus. Kwan – walks. Ramirez doubles in 1 (wild throw) and Freeman then hits one through Solano’s legs and 2 runs score and it’s 4-3 Tempe! All runs unearned. So Tempe takes the lead after 6 1/2 4-3.
Tempe pulls Martinez for the bottom of the 7th and A.J. Minter steps on the mound. Oswald Pereza comes in to PH and singles. WP and Chirinos grounds out – no runner movement. Eli White – walk. Solana – walk, bases loaded! Infield in – D.J. LeMahieu up – singles up the middle and drives in 2 for a Columbus 5-3 lead. Donovan then hits a SF and it’s 6-4. Columbus calls on Feliz Bautista to close out the game (and season)? And he does – 6 out save and Columbus wins it 6-4.
TEM 4-8-0 LP Minter (9-3) BS (8)
COL 6-8-2 WP Abreu (2-3) BS (2) S Bautista (12)
Summary: Well season ends with both teams getting some rest – but what a pitching series. Columbus enjoyed a slightly less potent bullpen, but their pitching didn’t care who they were playing. Well take a 4-2 series win over this team, no matter who was in the dugout. It was Tempe!! On to the postseason! And yes, we did keep the Tempers from winning 130! But at 126-36, that’s more than commendable. We ended up with 91 wins (35 games out of 1st place!!). Josh Winder – NO-HITTER!!!

Prairie  Falcons @ Corktown  Cycle

Summary: Corktown and Prairie split the series 3-3 to end the season.
Prairie 58-104

Musgrove tries to win another pitcher of the week award by throwing 18-1/3 scoreless innings and allowing only 4 hits.

Harsens Island  Walleye @ Baltimore  Comets

Preview: The top two teams in the N.L. East square off in Baltimore to wrap up the 2023 season. The Comets need to win 2 games to claim the division crown.
Game #1: Not much drama in this one as the Comets pounce on Walleye starter Glenn Otto for 5 runs on 7 hits in the first two innings to cruise to a 9-3 victory. VIR gets to Buehler in the B2 when Jimenez 1bs, Springer 1bs, and Rengifo hits a 3-run HR.

FRE N.Gorman hitd a solo-HR in the T4

VIR gets it back in the B5 when Merryfield 1bs and eventually scores on a Jimenez rbi-1b

FRE N.Gorman hits another solo-HR in the T6.

But after that the VIR pen is up to the task as Hill and C.Holmes close out the game

VIR Neidert tosses a strong 5.2IP gicing up 3 hits and only 1 run while fanning 7.

Virginia 4, Fremont 2

Game #2: FRE G.Whitlock vs VIR J.Ryan

FRE makes a statement in the T1 when Rojas 2bs, Ohtani rbi-2b, Ryan throws away Guerrrero’s grounder, and 1 out later Hays hits a 3-run HR.

But VIR gets a couple back in the B1 when Merryfield 1bs, Reynolds 1bs, Jimenez rbi1-b, and a Springer rbi-1b

In the VIR B5 Biggio bbs, then 2 outs later, Gonzalez bbs (in for the injured Reynolds), Devers rbi-1b, and then Jimenez brings the home crowd to their feet with a 3-run HR! VIR up 6-4.

FRE comes right back in the T6, Hayes bbs, Peterson bbs, Yaz moves them up with a groundout, and then PH Margot with a 2-rbi 1b.

It’s a short lived tie as VIR strikes again in the B6 off Y.Garcia when Murphy is HBP, Biggion bbs, Segura 1bs to load the bases, Gonzalez with a 2-rbi 1b, and Deversw/SF8

In the FRE T9 VIR has to go to E.Morgan, since Holmes is tired, and it does not go well for the Sluggers; Ohtani bbs, Guerrero hits a 2-run HR, and Hernandez then ties the game with a solo-HR! Morgan is eventually able to get out of the inning thanks to Peterson being nailed at 2nd on the attempted steal.

FRE calls on R.Tepera in the B9; after he Ks PH Gallagher, Devers 1bs, and then Jimenez hits a 2-run HR for the game-winner (his 2nd HR of the game).

In the VIR B3 Bradley 2bs, Merrifield rbi-1b, and then Devers with a 2-run HR.

All in all FRE pounded the VIR pitchers for 15 runs on 18 hits; Buxton hits 2-HRs, Hayes, Gorman, and E.Diaz also have HRs.

Fremont 15, Virginia 1

Game #5: FRE C.Rodon vs VIR L.Castillo

FRE picks up where they left off in the previous game in the T1 when Correa 1bs and Ohtani hits a 2-run HR.

After those runs it’s all about the pitchers as FRE C.Rodon tosses 7 scoreless innings and VIR L.Castillo matches him.

FRE C.Rodon leaves after 7 having given up only 1 hit and fanning 7.

In the VIR B8 Trejo 2bs, PH Gonzalez moves him up with a groundout, and then Merrifield with a SF9.

That’s the way it would end as FRE Gallegos comes on in the B9 for the save. The game ends on a funny play as with 2 out Springer 1bs, then Rengifo 1bs to RF and Springer takes it upon himself and is nailed at 3b by Buxton.

Fremont 2, Virginia 1

Game #1: Nestor Cortes began things nicely, with 7 scoreless. 2 relievers finished the job. YSS 6 – TIJ 0
Game #2: Gerrit Cole continued the nice-ness, with 7.2 scoreless. Clase got a 4 out save. Turner and d’arnaud each homered and plated a pair. YSS 5 – TIJ 0
Game #3: The tightest game of the series started with TIJ’s Cedric Mullins putting the BR’s on the board for the first time in the series with a solo shot in the 2nd inning of game 3. d’arnaud answered in the bottom half to knot the score at 1 – 1. Mullins repeated himself in the 4th, to give TIJ a 2 – 1 lead. YSS scratched across the tying run in the 5th. Brady Singer was then injured for 23 days. Fast forward to Jorge Soler gunning down Barnhart at the plate to end the 12th inning, and Cedric Mullins getting caught stealing to close out the 14th.
