L: Patrick Sandoval (3-1)
S: Robert Suarez (2)

Game #2: An explosive first inning saw the Skyliners put up five runs against Fremont starter Tarik Skubal, with the big blow a 3-run homer from Ramon Urias. The Cannons get some ground back in the bottom of the frame with 4 runs off of CIN’s Cole Irvin, as Shohei Ohtani and Cole Irvin both leave the yard with two-run homers. Fremont uses a two-run homer from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the bottom of the second to go up 6-5.

Cincinnati gets another big inning in the fourth plating 4 to go up 9-6 thanks to back-to-back homers from Mike Trout and Anthony Santander. Skubal sticks around long enough to give up another run in the fifth from an Eric Haase single and Cincinnati leads 10-6. Fremont gets one back in the sixth from an Elias Diaz single, then two more in the seventh with Ohtani’s second homer of the game to cut it 10-9.

Cincinnati gets two on in the eighth, but Ryan Tepera is able to induce groundouts from Mike Trout and Anthony Santander. In the bottom of the ninth, Brock Burke is brought on to finish the game, but PH Carlos Correa is able to leadoff with a single. After a wild pitch and walk to Guerrero Jr., Ohtani comes up looking for his 3rd homer of the game but strikes out. Cincinnati threatens with two on in the eighth but fails to score.

Down a run in the bottom of the ninth, Shohei Ohtani leads off with a walk from Ryan Stanek. Cincninnati brings on Brock Burke, who blew the save and lost the game the day before. He proceeds to hit Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a pitch to put two on. Teoscar Hernandez doubles, sending Ohtani in to tie the game at 2-2, but Guerrero Jr. is thrown out at home trying for the win. Hernandez takes third on the throw, which is crucial as Austin Hays’s sac fly brings in the winning run, and Fremont takes it 3-2 in another walkoff.

W: Matt Festa (1-0)
L: Brock Burke (0-3)

HR: CIN- Anthony Santander (7); FRE- Joey Bart (3)

Game #4: Cincinnati jumps out on top 4-0 in the first, with a three-run homer from Jose Ramirez off of Austin Voth leading the way. Vladimir Guerrero doubles home Josh Rojas off of Connor Overton in the bottom of the inning to cut it to 4-12. Jace Peterson scores in the second for Fremont thanks to a three-base error by Ben Gamel to make it 4-2. A pair of doubles by Kyle Farmer and Gavin Sheets extends the Cincinnati lead to 6-2.

Voth loses is control in the 5th with back-to-back HBP of Anthony Santander and Christian Walker, and gets tossed by the overeager umpire, though the Skyliners fail to score. They would get a run in the sixth with a Tommy Edman solo HR to go up 7-2. Fremont gets two back with a Carlos Correa double in the eighth to make it 7-4.

In the ninth, a pair of singles off of Zack Thompson brings the tying run to the plate, but Byron Buxton can’t deliver the drama this time and Cinci wins their first game of the series, 7-4.

W: Connor Overton (1-0)
L: Austin Voth (3-2)
S: Zack Thompson (1)

HR: CIN- Tommy Edman (3), Jose Ramirez (4); FRE- none

Cincinnati gest it right back in the sixth with Mike Trout’s homer, tying it at 1-1. Fremont gets back on top in the bottom of the inning with a run-scoring single from Carlos Correa and a Jose Ramirez error for a 3-1 lead. Ramirez atones for his error by leading off the seventh with a homerun. The Skyliners get a runner on 3rd with one out but can’t bring him home.

Fremont gets back up by 2 in the bottom of the seventh with a run-scoring single by Mike Yastrzemski to make it 4-2. Christian Walker ties it up at 4 with a two-run homer in the eighth. Neither side can push anyone else across in regulation, so we go to extra innings.

Cincinnati goes 1-2-3 in the 10th, then Josh Rojas doubles to lead off the bottom of the frame. Adam Wainwright then gets Correa and Shohei Ohtani out, but Vladimir Guerrero sends the ball over the wll for a walkoff win for Fremont 6-4 in ten. Rodon strikes out ten in the no-decision.

L: Adam Wainwright (0-1)

HR: CIN- Mike Trout (8), Christian Walker (6), Jose Ramirez (5); FRE- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (9), Teoscar Hernandez (5)

Game #6: Fremont is assured of a series win and at least a tie in the division standings, but is looking to build a lead over the Skyliners. Ben Gamel gives the visitors an early boost with a first inning solo homer off of Shohei Ohtani for the 1-0 lead. Fremont has been fortunate with injuries so far, but their luck runs out in this game as Austin Hays is knocked out for 3 days with a HBP from Cinci starter Patrick Sandoval.

In the third, Cincinnati widens the lead after a single, Jose Ramirez steal, and Cal Raleigh double makes it 2-1. Ji-Man Choi singles in Raleigh to make it 3-0. Disaster strikes on the next swing as Kyle Farmer’s fly into shallow left results in a collision between Carlos Correa (out 14 days) and Teoscar Hernandez (out 7 days). Choi also scores on the play, so it is now 4-0.

Manuel Margot gets Fremont on the board with a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth. Fremont has to wait until the seventh to score again as Javier Baez triples home Nolan Gorman. Baez is stranded at third to leave it at 4-2. Fremont is unable to muster another baserunner, and Cincinnati takes it 4-2. The Skyliners manage only four strikeouts of Cannon batters, but deal Ohtani his first loss of the season.

W: Patrick Sandoval (4-1)
L: Shohei Ohtani (5-1)
S: Ryne Stanek (7)

HR: CIN- Ben Gamel (3); FRE- none

Game #7: Fremont strikes first off of Cole Irvin with a Josh Rojas single and steal, fielder’s choice, and then a groundball play at the plate seeing Rojas score to make it 1-0 in the first. The Skyliners waste no time, with Jose Ramirez’s two-run blast in the second putting them up 2-1. Gavin Sheets is then sent from the game with a HBP from Fremont starter Sandy Alcantara, with CIN losing him for 8 days.

Fremont gets two on in the third, but a double play ends the threat, they then get two on again in the inning but still fail to score. Jose Ramirez leads off the fourth with a double, but is picked off on a throw by Elias Diaz. In the seventh, Mr. Durable Sandy Alcantara comes out of the game holding his wrist (lost for 5 games). Later in the bottom of the inning, Josh Rojas singles and steals his second bag of the game, but Shohei Ohtani cannot bring him home.

Matt Festa comes on in the eighth and gives up a homer to his first batter, Ben Gamel, to give Cinci some breathing room with a 3-1 lead. Mike Trout comes on with two on but is unable to add to the lead. Jace Peterson sends one to the warning track in the ninth, but not deep enough. PH Nolan Gorman comes on with two outs and Ryne Stanek is able to get him looking to close out the 3-1 Cincinnati win. Fremont musters just 4 hits in the loss.

W: Cole Irvin (3-2)
L: Sandy Alcantara (6-2)
S: Ryne Stanek (8)

HR: Ben Gamel (4), Jose Ramirez (6); FRE- none

Summary: The Skyliners are only able to get the three-way in Fremont as the Cannons take it 4-3 and gain the half-game lead for the division. All in all, it could have been a bigger series for Cincinnati as Fremont came from behind twice in the ninth and squeeked out an extra-innings win in another.

Next up, Cincinnati travels to Virginia for a seven-game series against a good Sluggers squad, while Fremont travels for six against AL-leading Hollywood.
