2019 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Southbend Lynx @ Detroit Crime |
|---|
![]() The Southbend Lynx face off against the Detroit Crime for the AL Championship. The season series stood at 9-5 in Detroit’s favor, with Southbend losing all 7 games at Detroit. Southbend comes into the series with the #1 Hitting team at .271/.340/.462. Detroit was at #7 with .254/.330/.439. The long ball, which was key for both teams, is pretty even at 242 HRs for Southbend and 235 HRs for Detroit. Southbend comes in at #2 in Pitching with Detroit hot on their heels at #3. Southbend’s one problem area is in giving up walks, tho they only yielded 149 HRs, the least in the AL. Fielding wise its all Detroit who were #2, whereas Southbend was at #10. |
| GAME #1 – Michael Foltynewicz 22-5 (3.06) – Aaron Nola 20-8 (2.25)
Southbend strikes first in the T3 when Zack Cozart 3bs and with 2 out Jose Altuve hits a 2-run HR for an early 2-0 Lynx lead. In the SBL T4 Max Muncy 2bs, after Eduardo Escobar and Jake Cave strike out, Austin Meadows plates Muncy with an rbi-1b. But SBL Michael Foltynewicz couldn’t protect the lead as Yasmani Grandal leads off the B4 with a 2b, Kyle Schwarber bbs, and Brandpm Belt ties the game with a 3-run HR. Its gets worse for the Lynx when J.P. Crawford 1bs and Brett Gardner hits a 2-run HR for a 5-3 Crime lead. SBL gets one back in the T5 when Cozart 2bs and Altuve 2bs him home. But Detroit would put the game away in the B5 off Jeurys Familia when Grandal bbs, Schwarber hits a 2-run HR, Belt bbs, Crawford bb, and Gardner bloops a 2-rbi 2b, moves to 3rd on the throw, and then scores on Ben Zobrist sac fly. The pitchers take over from here and there was no more scoring. Both aces are less then stellar, but the Detroit bullpen is better then Southbend’s. Southbend pitchers give up 9 walks in the game with 4 of those runners scoring. Detroit leads the series 1-0. Detroit 10, Southbend 4 DET W – Aaron Nola (1-0) SBL L – Michael Foltynewicz (0-1) |
| GAME #2 – Edwin Jackson 8-10 (3.56) – Carlos Carrasco 19-6 (2.23)
Southbend jumps on DET Carlos Carrasco quickly in the T1; Jed Lowrie bbs, Max Muncy 1bs, Eduardo Escobar rips a 1b to LF and Brett Gardner pegs Lowrie at the plate, but wait! Yasmani Grandal drops the throw and Jed Lowrie scores! Both Muncy and Escobar move up to 2nd and 3rd. Austin Meadows, 1 out later, blasts a 2-rbi 1b for a 3-0 SBL lead. In the SBL T3 Jake Cave 1bs with 2 out and scores on Meadows rbi-3b. That would be the end of the scoring for Southbend. But they don’t need it was Edwin Jackson is on the mark tossing 5 innings of Shutout ball as he fans 4 and only gives up 4 hits. The SBL bullpen comes through in this game giving up no hits over the last 3.2 innings to even the series at 1-1. Carrasco was the victim of the normally strong DET fielding as he gives up only 1 ER in 6.1IP. Zobrist is the lone hitting star for DET going 2-3 Southbend 4, Detroit 0 SBL W- Edwin Jackson (1-0) DET L – Carlos Carrasco (0-1) |
| The series shifts to Southbend. |
| GAME #3 – Stephen Strasburgh 9-11 (4.69) – Freddy Peralta 11-2 (3.72)
Southbend opens the scoring in the B3 when Jose Altuve smacks a 2 out solo-HR. In the DET T4 Manny Machado 1bs, steals 2nd, and then scores on Yasmani Grandal‘s rbi-1b when the ball is cut off to get Grandal at 2nd. SBl retakes the lead in the B4 when Max Muncy hits a lead-off solo-HR. Eduardo Escobar then 2bs and 1 out later Mark Canha singles him home for a 3-1 SBL lead. But DET is not to be denied as in the T5 Adam Jones hits a lead off solo-HR of his own, Brett Gardner 1bs, steals 2nd, moves to 3rd on Ben Zobrist fly to RF, Justin R. Miller comes on for the SBL, and Harper bbs, Machado then crushes a 3-run HR to give DET a 5-3 lead! In the BL B6 Canha blasts a 2 out 2b, Stephen Strasburg is pulled for Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner comes in faces Mason Williams, throws a wild pitch, and then gives up an rbi-1b. In the SBL B8 DET Seranthony Dominguez is on for his 2nd inning of work and faces Muncy to lead off the inning. Muncy belts his 2nd HR of the game, a solo-HR to tie the game at 5-5! Dominguez settles down and gets the next 3 Lynx to end the inning. SBL Moronta is stil on the mound for the SBL to start the T9 and Gardner leads off with a 1b, but he’s nailed by Maxwell trying to steal 2nd. Escobar then throws away J.P. Crawford‘s grounder, and Zobrist follows with a rbi-3b, but is thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it into a inside-the-park HR. DET goes to R.Elias to close out the game and PH Mark Trumbo fans, Zack Cozart then 1bs, Bruce Maxwell flies out to CF, and Lucas Duda is called on to PR, and he then steals 2nd on a broken H&R play with Altuve at bat. But Roenis Elias is able to strike out Altuve to end the game! Detroit takes a 2-1 lead in the series! Detroit 6, Southbend 5 DET W – Seranthony Dominguez (1-0) S – Roenis Elias (1) SBL L –Reyes Moronta (0-1) |
| GAME #4 – Aaron Nola 20-8 (2.25) – Michael Foltynewicz 22-5 (3.06)
DET gets on SBL Michael Foltynewicz right away in the T1 when Bryce Harper gets his 1st hit of the series a solo-HR to deep RF. But SBL is used to this and comes right back in the B1 when Max Muncy draws a 2 out bb and Eduardo Escobar buries a 2-run HR off Nola for a 2-1 SBL lead. Jake Cave would follow with a long 2b, but that would be the rest of the hits for Southbend in the game as Aaron Nola bears down. Nola would retire the next 22 SBL in a row. Fortunately for the Lynx Foltynewicz only gives up the HR to Harper through 6 innings. Foltynewicz would bend giving up 6 walks and 1 more hit, but would not break, as he turns the ball over to Sean Gilmartin, Reyes Moronta, and Roberto Osuna to close out the game. The SBL tie up the series at 2-2 going into Game 5. Southbend 2, Detroit 1 SBL W – Michael Foltynewicz (1-1) S – Roberto Osuna (1) DET L – Aaron Nola (1-1) |
| GAME #5 – Carlos Carrasco 19-6 (2.23) – Edwin Jackson 8-10 (3.56)
SBL scores first in the B2 on a Mark Canha solo-HR. In the T3 DET Maybin 2bs, Brett Gardner then 1bs to LF, and Cameron Maybin scores as Gardner is cut down at 2nd. In the SBL B3 JoseAltuve 1bs, steals 2nd, and then Max Muncy 2-out rbi-1b puts SBL back out on top. Pitching takes over from there as SBL E.Jackson goes 5IP giving up the lone run while fanning 4, and amazingly not walking anyone. Jeurys Familia comes on for 2IP of scoreless work through the 7th. For DET Carlos Carracso goes 4IP giving up the 2 runs, then turns the ball over to Mike Minor, who eventually will go 5IP giving up only 2 hits and no runs. The turning point of the game is in the T8 when SBL Seasn Gilmartin is brought in, he walks Maybin, then gives up a infield 1b to Gardner, after J.P. Crawford grounds out back to Gilmartin, Ben Zobrist follows with a 2-rbi 2b for a 3-2 DET lead. One out later Manny Machado would put the game away with a 2-run HR. SBL would get two runners on in the B8, but DET would stay with Minor who Ks Austin Jackson and Mason Williams to end the inning. Minor would throw a perfect 9th for the DET win! DET now leads the series 3-2! Detroit 5, Southbend 2 DET W – Mike Minor (1-0) SBL L – Sseasn Gilmartin (0-1) |
| Series goes back to Detroit. Southbend has its back to the wall. |
| GAME #6 – Freddy Peralta 11-2 (3.72) – Stephen Strasburgh 9-11 (4.69)
Both starters are solid through 4 innings. In the B5 DET Brandon Belt 1bs, Cameron Maybin grounds out moving Belt, Brett Gardner then hits a rbi-2b off the wall for a 1-0 DET lead. SBL Freddy Peralta gets out of the inning by getting J.P. Crawford to P5 and Ben Zobrist to F8. DET Stephen Strasburg would mow through the SBL through 7IP racking up 8 Ks along the way. In the SBL T8 Jose Altuve leads off with a 2b, Jed Lowrie draws a walk, and DET calls on Roenis Elias (Game 3 closer) to faceMax Muncy. But Muncy stuns the home crowd as he belts a 3-run HR to give SBL the lead and possibly save their season. SBL still has Reyes Moronta on the mound to start the B8, and Zobrist leads off with a 1b, Bryce Harper gets a scratch infield hit, bringing up Manny Machado. But Reyes Moronta bears down and Fans Martin Machado, gets Maldonado to F9. Roberto Osuna is brought in and gets Kyle Schwarber to L4 to end the inning. In the B9 Osuna would give up a 1b to Belt, but get Maybin to hit into a 6-4-3 DP and Gardner to F7 to end the game and knot the series at 3-3! Southbend 3, Detroit 1 SBL W – Reyes Moronta (1-1) S – Roberto Osuna (2) DET L – Stephen Strasburg (0-1) |
| GAME #7 – Michael Foltynewicz 22-5 (3.06) – Aaron Nola 20-8 (2.25)
The all or nothing game for both teams! Game 7 would follow the same track as Game 6 as the pitcher’s would dominate. DET Aaron Nola picked up where he left off in Game 4 keeping the SBL scoreless through the 8 innings he pitched. SBL had their chances during the game as they left 9 runners on base and had the bases loaded twice in the game. But they just couldn’t come up with the big hit. The only scoring came in the DET B8 when Brett Gardner bb’s, J.P. Crawford bounces into a FC, Ben Zobrist bb’s, and Bryce Harper hits a 3-run HR to atone for his poor overall series. SBL Mark Canha would lead off with a 1b in the T9, but DET Seranthony Dominguez would come on and strikeout Zack Cozart, get PH Mark Trumbo on a FC, and then finish the game getting PH Austin Meadows to hit into a FC. Detroit 3, Southbend 0 DET W – Aaron Nola (2-1) S – Seranthony Dominguez (1) SBL L – Michael Foltynewicz (1-2) |
| Overall there were key/clutch hits by players on both teams. But the most crucial stat line in the series is the lack of hitting from one player in the series. SBL Jed Lowrie, a key contributor for the SBL during the season, goes 0-25 with a paltry 5 walks. Also, to a lesser degree, SBL Austin Jackson also goes hitless 0-21 with only 1 HBP in the series. But getting almost no production out of Jed Lowrie was devastating to the SBL. DET Bryce Harper also did not have a big series, but he at least produced some runs during the series as he had the clutch HR in Game 7 and a HR in Game 4. Other players on DET also had poor series but they at least produced something. The biggest hitting surprise of the series was the performance of DET Brett Gardner. The series put in by Gardner was quite amazing as he had a stat line of .480/.500/.720, he went 12-25 w/3 2bs, 1 HR, 4 runs scored, and 6 RBI. Brandon Belt, Manny Machado, and Harper all had the big 3 run HRs for DET in the series, but it was Gardner who many times kept things going. As such he was clearly the MVP of the series. Congratulations to Sergio and Detroit on a fine season and playoff series! |
2019 NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES #2
Pittsburgh Lumber Company @ Sacramento Capitals |
|---|
![]() The Sacramento Capitals (115-47) host the Pittsburgh Lumber Company (95-65) as the winners of the National League West and National League East face off in the National League Division Series. |
| GAME #1 – Mike Clevinger 12-11 (3.08) – Max Scherzer 27-5 (1.56)
Max Scherzer opens the series with a gem, pitching 7 shutout innings while giving up just 2 hits. Stanton got on the board first with a solo shot in the 2nd inning, while Lindor added to the lead with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 6th. An RBI triple by Grossman and single by Upton in the 8th increased Sacramento’s lead to 5-0, shutting down Game 1. |
| GAME #2 – Michael Wacha 6-6 (2.97) – Chris Sale 20-5 (1.35)
Once again, Stanton got on the board first with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning–which would have been enough in another shutout by the Capitals pitching staff. This time led by Chris Sale, who pitched 6 scoreless inning. Stanton would hit another 2-run home run in the 6th inning followed by an RBI double in the 7th inning. Sacramento takes Game 2 6-0. |
| Sacramento leads the series 2-0 behind impeccable pitching and timely hitting and heads east to Pittsburgh with the hopes of a series sweep.
Down 2-0 in the series, Pittsburgh looks to turn their fortunes around at home. |
| GAME #3 – Zach Greinke 23-5 (2.73) – Jameson Taillon 13-7 (2.69)
Sacramento jumps out to a 2-0 lead after two against Taillon, and things aren’t looking good. But Willy Adames (4-5 in the game) collects a 2-run double to tie it up. The teams trade runs in the 5th and we go extra frames! Juan Soto plates Mallex Smith in the bottom of the 10th and the Lumber Company win it 4-3. |
| GAME #4 – Max Scherzer 27-5 (1.56) – Sean Manaea 11-6 (2.33)
Bouyed by their victory in Game 3, the Pirates square off against Mad Max Scherzer with some confidence. And Scherzer isn’t exactly intimidated, fanning 12 batters… but he can’t handle Francisco Cervelli. The Pittsburgh catcher belts a solo HR in the 2nd and also scores after a leadoff double om the 5th and Sean Manaea goes the distance for the 2-0 upset. The series is now knotted up at 2-2! |
| GAME #5 – Chris Sale 20-5 (1.35) – Mike Clevinger 12-11 (3.08)
Next up for SAC is Chris Sale. Pittsburgh buys what he’s selling, as Cervelli and Marte both take him deep early. Unfortunately Clevinger is a little shaky, surrendering a pair of runs (including a Stanton HR). We find ourselves with a 3-2 lead into the 7th, where Kenley Jansen coughs up an unearned run to tie it at 3-3. Colin McHugh serves up a solo HR to Aaron Judge in the bottom of the 8th, and Raisel Iglesias slams the door as the Lumber Company wins it 4-3. |
| Timely hitting and solid pitching allows Pittsburgh to take all 3 games at home and head back to Sacramento with dreams of playing spoiler. Pittsburgh heads back to Sacramento with a 3-2 series lead. |
| GAME #6 – Michael Wacha 6-6 (2.97) – Ryne Stanek 6-4 (2.68)
The Caps turn to Ryan Stanek in a do-or-die Game 6 while the Lumber Company hand the ball to Michael Wacha for his 2nd start of the series. Sacramento jumps to an early lead with a lead-off single by Cano, double by Lindor, and sacrifice hits by Stanton and Beltre. Sacramento’s lead wouldn’t last long; with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the top of the 4th, Brian Dozier singled to right-centerfield, scoring both and tying the game at 2. The Capitals pull Stanek and turn the game over to the pen. The Capitals eventually take the lead in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI single from Cano, and extend the lead with a solo home run off the bat of Adrian Beltre. Sacramento’s bullpen shut down the Lumber Company with 5 scoreless to secure the win, 4-2, and a series tie at 3-3. |
| GAME #7 – Jameson Taillon 13-7 (2.69) – Max Scherzer 27-5 (1.56)
Sacramento turns to Scherzer for the series finale to face off against Taillon. This time it was Pitttsburgh that would jump to an early lead, getting on the scoreboard with a Soto 2-run home run in the top of the 1st inning. Pittsburgh would extend its lead to 3-0 in the top of the 2nd with a Brian Dozier solo home run. Down 0-3 in the 3rd, Sacramento gets on the board with a Justin Upton 2-run home run followed by a sac hit by Moreland to tie the game at 3 all. The game would stay tied 3-3 until the 10th inning when Johnathan LuCroy would come off the bench to give the Lumber Company the 4-3 lead with a Dozier-scoring double. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th, Cano get’s the leadoff walk and is promptly replaced at 1st by DeShields Jr. DeShields swipes 2nd and is driven home by a Lindor single, tying the game at 4-4. The game remains tied at 4 and Castro takes over for Cano at 2B. Bottom of the 11th and Yarbrough on the mound–Yadier Molina reaches on a Valentin error; Yarbrough strikes out Moreland for out number one; Reddick comes in to run and Torreyes comes in to pinch hit; and Yarbrough gives Torreyes the pass, opting instead to face Starlin Castro. Castro makes him pay, launching a series winning home run over the leftf ield wall. Sacramento beats Pittsburgh in 11, 7-4 |
| In a very close series, Pittsburgh hit a triple slash of .190/.247/.341 with 16 runs in 7 games, and held the Capitals to a 3.32 ERA, while Sacramento hit a similar triple slash of .190/.276/.367 with 28 runs, and held the Lumber Company to a 2.26 ERA. Giancarlo Stanton led the Capitals offense batting .240 with 4 HR, 5 runs, and 9 RBI, while Brian Dozier led the Lumber Company ith a .273 BA, 3 2B, 1 HR, and 5 RBI. |
2019 NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES #1
Columbus Explorers @ Tempe Tempers |
|---|
![]() For the last five years the Columbus Explorers and Tempe Tempers have alternated every year with the Explorers winning the NL Central in the even years the Tempers winning the division in the odd years. The two team faced off in the Divisional round last year with Columbus winning the series in six games. |
| GAME #1 – J.A. Happ 20-3 (2.55) – Wade Miley 6-2 (2.21)
Ozzie Albies got things going early in the first with a solo hr. In the third, Yoenis Cespedes hit for the pitcher and crushed a two run home run. Marcell Ozuna added a solo shot in 4th and Tempe had a quick 4-0 lead. Columbus finally got their first base runner in 6th. They also got their first hit and first home run as Kiki Hernandez crushed a 3 run home run. A Miguel Cabrera solo shot in the next inning tied it up 4-4. In bottom of the 9th, defensive replacement Jeff Mathis got a two out walk-off single. |
| GAME #2 – Jordan Lyles 6-6 (3.66) – Corey Kluber 19-8 (2.20)
A Maikel Franco solo shot in the 2nd gave Tempe an early lead. Holt came up with a timely two out triple in the 4th to score two and put Columbus up 2-1. Miggy came off the bench for two rbi double that put Tempe back up 3-2 in the 4th. Kirby Yates served up a solo shot to Miguel Cabrera the next inning to tie it up. A Michael Brantley rbi single in the bottom half of the inning put Tempe up again. Holt rallied the Explorers again with a game tying solo shot in 7th. J.D. Martinez just missed a home run in the 7th, but it was still good for a rbi double and the lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Shin-soo Choo gunned Wilmer Difo as he tried to tag and score from 3rd. The ump completely blew the call and then ejected Difo when Difo tried to inform the umpire of his mistake. MWBL may need to look into instant replay at some point. In the 9th, Charlie Blackmon reached 3rd with no outs after a double and a WP. Jose G. Castillo and Ryan Braiser erased the next three hitters to preserve the save. |
| Tempe wins two very tight games for a 2-0 lead as the series moves to Columbus for the next three games.
Down 2-0 after the series opened in Tempe, the Explorers come home needing some wins. Games 1 and 2 were both ever so close (both 5-4 losses that, oh well, …..). Columbus needs to turn those nail biters around if they want to have any chance against the Tempers – no room for error(s). |
| GAME #3 – Miles Mikolas 18-3 (2.19) – Julio Teheran 12-10 (3.83)
Columbus is feeling it early as Matt Carpenter strokes a 2 run homer in the 1st (1). Bottom 5 they add another when Asdrubal Cabrera walks, Victor Reyes in to PR and he steals 2nd and 3rd. Ryan Zimmerman walks a Spencer Kieboom comes in to PH. He singles to left for an rbi. Tempe gets 1 back in the 7th when Ozzie Albies triples with 2 outs and Wellington Castillo singles him home (1 of 3 hits in the game). Then the Tempers make it 3-2 in the 8th when Joey Votto leads off with a single and Jose LeClerc is brought in. He gets Marcell Ozuna and J.D. Martinez, but Xander Bogaerts lines one to LF for the rbi. In the bottom half however, Columbus adds some insurance when Charlie Blackmon hits a 2 out solo homer. Then Carpernter and Holt walk (all of this off Tony Sipp). Sipp leaves, Jarod Hughes comes in. D.J. LaMahieu then singles and a Martinez error allows another run to score. A bit of excitement in the 9th however keeps things alive for Tempe and drives the home town fans and GM nuts. Franco leads off with a single of Hendriks. Tony Watson is then called on. Albies then grounds him to 2nd. Castillo singles moving Franco to 3rd. Melky Cabrera to PH, David Robertson to pitch. Cabrera pops up. Votto up – Robertson fans him to end the game. |
| GAME #4 – Wade Miley 6-2 (2.21) – J.A. Happ 20-3 (2.55)
Great looking game as Wade Miley and J.A. Happ hook up for 4 scoreless innings. Then in the 5th Tempe gets back-to-back-to-back homers from Ryan Braun (1), Maikel Franco (2) and Wellington Castillo (1). Braun singles in another in the 6th as Happ leaves and Miley goes the distance for the CG shutout victory (1-0). He gives up only 2 hits and fans 9 along the way. No “opener” needed here. Happ gets the loss (0-1). |
| GAME #5 – Corey Kluber 19-8 (2.20) – Wade LeBlanc 11-10 (3.19)
Columbus on brink of elimination down 3-1, Tempe has champagne in the visitor’s clubhouse. Corey Kluber is primes and Wade LeBlanc is finally ready to start a game in this series. However, Tempe wants to rock his boat and Melky Cabrera does just that with a 2 run blast (1) in the 3rd. But some home town excitement pops up in the 4th when Shin-Soo Choo walks to lead off the inning. Blackmon then doubles him to 3rd, Matt Carpenter walks loading the bases with no outs. Brock Holt flies to LF and Choo crosses the plate on the SF. But Kluber then toughens and nothing else happens. Well nothing else unto the top of the 6th when Ozzie Albies takes Jose LeClerc yard for a solo shot (2) making it 3-1, hometeam getting in a bigger hole. But the bottom half sees some excitement. Blackmon singles, Carpenter singles, Holt flies out. Paul DeJong then cracks an extra base hit scoring Blackman, then Carperter heads for home, throw comes in and DeJong breaks for 3rd. Defense gives up the run and nail DeJong – consider it a trade off for the tying run and we end the sixth noted at 3-3. Then the real fun starts for the home fans. Bottom of the 8th, Blackmon gets 1 of his 3 hits in the game, this one a solo homer (2) off Kirby Yates and the Explorers takes a 4-3 lead with 1 inning to go. Is there still life? David Robertson comes in for the save!! Bogaerts however, leads off with a double. Ozuna then grounds to SS, DeJong fields it, over to first, out, Bogaerts holds. 1 Down! Braun up, the whiff – 2 down!! Maikel Franco up and he jacks on to deep left, Holt back, but the ball clears the fence for a 2 run homer (3) and turns the 4-3 Columbus lead into a 5-4 Tempe lead – UGH!!!! |
| So, Tempe will host the final game(s) of the Division series between these NL Central Rivals – last year it went 6 with Columbus on top, will Tempe do the same this year, or will we get to game 7 then see what 1 game can bring.
Tempers returned to Tempe with the series lead, but the Explorers now carried the momentum after the dramatic come from behind walk off win in game five. |
| GAME #6 – Julio Teheran 12-10 (3.83) – Clay Buchholz 7-3 (1.85)
Clay Buchholz 18 grade made his first start of the series against game three winner Julio Tehran 13 grade. 1st Inning – Columbus started quick with a lead off triple from Gordon, a Blackman walk and an RBI single from Carpenter. 1-0 COL. Tempe elected to go with extra defense, so Mathis and Difo started the game in the field. Blackman got an aggressive lead of 2B which allowed Mathis to pick him off. Buchholz then popped up Holtz to get out of the first. Bot 1st Inning – Votto singled and Ozuna walked to start the bottom half of the inning, but Teheran rung up JD Martinez and doubled up Bogaerts. 2nd Inning – Buchholz had 1, 2, 3 inning in the top of the second. Bot 2nd Inning – Tehran got two quick outs but then ran into a little trouble. Difo walked, Cespedes pinch hit a liner off Tehran and Tempe then pinch hit again with Miggy who crushed a double down the line, but was thrown out at 3B when the Explorers conceded the run. 2-1 TEM 3rd Inning – Sipp came on in relief. He struck out Tehran and then allowed a single to Gordon. Gordon then stole 2nd on Castillo who was now catching after Mathis was replaced for a pinch hitter. Sipp rallied back to strikeout the next two lefties Choo and Blackman. Bot 3rd Inning – Tehran made quick order of the top of Tempe’s lineup in the bottom half. 4th Inning – Sipp got a quick pop up of Carpenter, struck out Holt, walked DeJong, but then struck out Cabrera. Bot 4th Inning – Bogaerts led off with a double, Brantley hit an RBI single to right but was thrown out trying to take second. 3-1 TEM. Albies doubled and then scored when Melky pinch hit for Sipp and hit an RBI single. 4-1 TEM. Castillo popped up to end the inning. 5th Inning – Yates started the inning for Tempe by popping up Keiboom, but then walked Teheran. Tempe then brought in lefty Castillo to face the Columbus row of lefties. Gordon singled for his 3rd hit of the game. Choo then doubled in Teheran to put runners on 3rd and 2nd with one out. 4-2 TEM. Blackmon hit a grounder to 2nd and Albies made the mistake of trying to get Gordon at home. 4-3 TEM. Carpenter then executed a perfectly played hit and run to tie it up. 4-4. Holt then singled to give the Explorers back the lead. 5-4 COL. Tempe’s manager finally pulled the rookie and sent in Hughes to stop the bleeding. Things just turned worse as Dejong launched a three run homerun to left. 8-4 COL. Hughes retired Cabrera and Keiboom to finally end the inning as Columbus batted around. Bot 5th Inning – Teheran got Votto, Ozuna and Martinez in order to make quick work of the top of Tempe’s order. 6th Inning – Can things get any worse for Tempe… the pitcher Teheran led off the inning with a solo homerun. 9-4 COL. Hughes then got Gordon, Choo and Blackman. Bot 6th Inning – Teheran seemed a little winded after running around the bases. But he started by striking out Bogaerts before giving up a single to Brantley. He then got Albies swinging for the second out. Difo worked a walk to put two runners on. Franco pinch hit for Hughes and hit an RBI single. 9-5 COL. Castilllo hitting in the nine hole, crushed Teheran’s next pitch for a three run homerun. 9-8 COL. Teheran then walked Votto and gave up a single to Ozuna. The Explorers finally went to the pen and brought in Petit to face JD. Martinez. JD hit a bloop double down the line to score two runs, but he was thrown out trying for 3B. 10-9 TEM. Tempe rallied for all six runs with two outs. 7th Inning – Tempe was determined not to blow another lead and sent in Braun as a defensive replacement for JD and their closer Brasier for a multi inning outing. Carpenter struck out, but Holt and DeJong worked back to back walks. Braiser got his control back and struck out Cabrera and popped up Hernandez who pinch hit for Kieboom. Bot 7th Inning – Petit worked a quiet inning getting Bogaerts and Brantley to line out and then a quick K of Albies. 8th Inning – LeMahieu pinch hit for Petit and led of with a double to the gap. Braiser was missing his control, so Tempe called on Crick. Bogaerts snuck behind LeMahieu and Crick picked him off. Crick then retired Gordon and Choo to end the inning. Bot 8th Inning – Robertson came on for Columbus and recorded two quick strikeouts of Difo and Braun. He then popped up Castillo. 9th Inning – The Explorers found themselves facing elimination again in the 9th. Blackmon forced a walk to put the tying run on. Tempe then brought on Barnett to face Carpenter. Blackmon took off running and stole 2nd. Carpenter then hit a grounder to short, but Bogaerts bobbled it for an E6. Floro was brought in to face Holt. Holt attempted to bunt the runners over, but ended up with a bunt hit that loaded the bases with no outs. The next batter DeJong, doubled past Difo to score two and give the Explorers another come from behind lead. 11-10 COL. Floro popped up Cabrera in shallow left, so Holt wasn’t able to tag. Reyes came on to pinch hit for Robertson. The move payed off as the seldom used Reyes singled in two more runs. 13-10 COL. Reyes then stole 2nd on Castillo, but Floro got Gordon to groundout and finally end the inning. Bot 9th Inning – Tony Watson came on in relief along with Zimmerman and Desmond for defense. Votto and Ozuna worked two quick walks. The 3rd spot in the order is normally Tempe’s MVP, JD Martinez, but it was now the pitchers spot after he was replaced by Braun for defense. So, Tempe sent their last available bench player to bat. Casali hit a long shot to track, but Blackmon ran it down for the first out. Bogaerts then singled to load the bases with one out. Brantley lined a hard hit ball over third that would have scored two runs but ended up just foul. Which turned out well for Tempe as Brantley put the next pitch over the center-field wall for a WALK OFF, SERIES WINNING GRAND SLAM! 14-13 TEM!!! |
| What a game and what a finish to a series. This has to be highest one run win in MWBL playoff history. It might also be the first time a team has won a series trailing by three runs with a walk off grand slam. Offensive power ended up being the deciding factor as both teams scored at will averaging over five runs a game. There really wasn’t an overall MVP for Tempe, so the award is going to three part timers. Maikel Franco, Miguel Cabrera, and Wellington Castillo. Bill put together an outstanding offense juggernaut this year and only four teams in MWBL had more wins than the Columbus Explorers in 2019. 2020 is an evening year, so they’ll most likely be back to win the NL Central. |
2019 AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES #1
Mesa Solar Sox @ Detroit Crime |
|---|
![]() American League Central Division Champion the Detroit Crime (108 – 54) take on the second Wild Card team the Mesa Solar Sox (88 – 74) in this Division Championship Series. Detroit seems to be the favorite, but stranger things have happened. |
| GAME #1 – Andrew Heany 16-4 (3.55) – Aaron Nola 20-8 (2.25)
HR’s from Machado, Zobrist, Jones, Grandal and Crawford help Detroit win 16-4 over Mesa. |
| GAME #2 – Los Trivino 4-0 (2.97) – Carlos Carrasco 19-6 (2.23)
Another 3 HR’s from Detroit (2) from Harper and a 2nd from Grandal give Detroit a 5-1 win and a 2-0 series lead over Mesa as both teams now head to Mesa. |
| Mesa vs Detroit in Playoff match up. Detroit wins the first 2 games 16-4 & 5-1.
Down 2 games to the powerful Detroit Crime, Mesa looks to extend the series beyond Game #5. All hail Jobu! Much rum drunk in his honor. |
| GAME #3 – Stephen Strasburgh 9-11 (4.69) – James Paxton 14-8 (2.91)
Mesa’s James Paxton gives up a two run homer to Manny Machado in the 1st, but settles down to go seven strong innings. Steven Strasburg allows Jesus Aguilar to tie it with a two run homer of his own in the 4th and loses it on an RBI double from Steven Pierce in the 5th. Sam Dyson and Jeremy Jefferies close the door on Mesa’s 3-2 win. |
| GAME #4 – Aaron Nola 20-8 (2.25) – Ian Kennedy 3-9 (6.51)
Ooooohhh, they were angry! The Crime blast away at futile Solar Sox starter Ian Kennedy and his relief right from the get go. Machado hits another two run homer in the 1st but they don’t stop there, scoring 7 times in the 1st three innings. Luke Voight was unstoppable, going 5-5 with a triple, a homer, and 4 RBI. Despite homers from Mazara and Rosario, the Sox fall 11-5, now facing elimination in the next game. |
| GAME #5 – Carlos Carrasco 19-6 (2.23) – Trevor Bauer 15-8 (2.22)
WHAT A WAY TO GO OUT!!! Detroit’s Carlos Carrasco hurls 8 1/3 innings of NO HIT ball while striking out 11. He gets relieved by Ryan Buchter and he completes the 9 inning no-no. TROUBLE IS, Trevor Bauer hadn’t given up a run either!!! He limited the crime to 2 hits and WE GO EXTRA INNINGS TIED AT 0!! 10th inning. No runs for the Crime. NO HIST FOR THE SOX. 11th INNING!!! – Brett Gardner smacks a hanging curve from Bauer in to the bleachers and the Crime lead 1-0. Seranthony Dominguez comes in to win it, and boy does he. Setting down the side in order the Sox are no hit for 11 innings and get taken out of the playoffs in a most embarrassing fashion!!! |
| Well…Detroit was clearly the better team, winning the series 4-1. Good luck the rest of the way. Mesa just took the Jobu doll and burned it!!! |
