Gainesville  Swamp Things @ Chicago  Mobsters

Preview: The Mobsters have dominated the division, boasting one of the best records in the league. Their pitching staff is elite, and their offense consistently delivers. They enter this series as heavy favorites.

The Swamp Things have struggled this year, sitting near the bottom of the division. Inconsistency on both sides of the ball has plagued them, and they face a tough challenge against the division leaders.

The Mobsters are expected to take full advantage of the matchup, but the Swamp Things could steal a game if their pitching holds up or the Mobsters rest key players. Expect the Chicago Mobsters to continue their dominant run, likely winning at least 4 out of 6 games in the series. The Swamp Things will need a near-perfect performance to pull off more than one upset.

Game #1: The Chicago Mobsters jumped out to an early lead with a five-run second inning, capitalizing on timely hits from Willy Adames, Riley Greene, and Gabriel Moreno. Gainesville’s C.J. Joe put the Swamp Things on the board with a solo homer in the second, but Chicago’s offense kept rolling, including a solo shot from Adames in the third and a two-run blast from Matt Wallner in the fifth. Seth Lugo was dominant for Chicago, striking out 11 over seven innings and allowing just one run.

Gainesville mounted a late comeback, highlighted by a two-run homer from Gleyber Torres and a two-run double by Joe in the eighth, narrowing the gap to 8-6. Chicago added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, and despite a ninth-inning rally that included a run-scoring error, Aroldis Chapman closed the door for his 27th save.

Final Score: Chicago 9 – Gainesville 7

Win: Seth Lugo 16-7 2(.34)
Loss: Matt Waldron 5-7 (5.02)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #27

Game #2: The Chicago Mobsters edged out the Gainesville Swamp Things 3–1 in a tightly contested matchup. Chicago struck first in the bottom of the first with a solo homer from Yordan Alvarez. Gainesville answered in the third with a solo shot by Chas McCormick to tie it up, but the Mobsters quickly regained the lead in the fourth when Willy Adames launched a two-run homer, making it 3–1. Both starting pitchers, Bowden Francis for Chicago and John Flaherty for Gainesville, were solid, but Francis was especially sharp, allowing just one run over 6.2 innings. The Swamp Things threatened in the sixth and ninth innings, but Chicago’s defense and bullpen held firm. Aroldis Chapman came in to close the door, striking out Colt Keith to end the game and secure his 28th save. The Mobsters’ timely hitting and strong pitching proved decisive in this low-scoring affair.

Final Score: Chicago 3 – Gainesville 1

Win: Bowden Francis 13-2 (2.38)
Loss: John Flaherty 9-11 (3.44)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #28

Game #3: The Chicago Mobsters jumped out to a commanding lead in the first inning, highlighted by Willy Adames’ grand slam and Matt Wallner’s two-run homer, staking Chicago to a 6-0 advantage and chasing Gainesville starter Cooper Criswell after just two-thirds of an inning. Logan Gilbert was dominant early, striking out the side in the first and finishing with 12 punchouts over seven innings. Gainesville’s Seiya Suzuki and Ryan Jeffers each hit two-run homers to chip away at the deficit, but Yordan Alvarez answered with a two-run shot of his own for Chicago. The Swamp Things mounted a late rally in the ninth, scoring twice and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Aroldis Chapman came on to slam the door and secure his 29th save. Chicago’s early offense and Gilbert’s strong outing proved just enough to hold off Gainesville’s comeback bid.

Final Score: Chicago 8 – Gainesville 6

Win: Logan Gilbert 20-6 (2.48)
Loss: Cooper Criswell 6-6 (5.45)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #29

Game #4: The Chicago Mobsters blanked the Gainesville Swamp Things 3–0 in a game dominated by pitching and timely hitting. Hunter Brown was outstanding for Chicago, tossing a complete-game shutout while scattering just a handful of hits and striking out several Swamp Things batters. The Mobsters broke through in the third inning when Jackson Chourio launched a two-run homer to right-center, giving Chicago a 2–0 lead. They added another run in the fourth, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by Gainesville. Zach Eflin pitched well for the Swamp Things but was undone by errors and the long ball, allowing three runs (only one earned) over five innings. Chicago’s defense was sharp, cutting down a runner at home and turning a key double play to escape a jam. With this win, Hunter Brown improves to 7-5, while Eflin drops to 5-7.

Final Score: Chicago 3 – Gainesville 0

Win: Hunter Brown 7-5 (3.17)
Loss: Zach Eflin 5-7 (3.29)

Game #5: The Gainesville Swamp Things staged a dramatic comeback to edge the Chicago Mobsters 9-8 in a thrilling contest. Chicago jumped ahead early, scoring seven runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Alex Bregman’s three-run homer, to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Gainesville chipped away, with Colt Keith’s two home runs—one in the second and a game-tying three-run blast in the seventh—fueling their rally. The Swamp Things took the lead for good in the seventh, capitalizing on wildness from the Mobsters’ bullpen as Seiya Suzuki drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-8. Jason Foley shut the door with two scoreless innings, securing the save. Ben Brown earned the win in relief, while Ryan Yarbrough took the loss. The Mobsters’ early offense wasn’t enough, as Gainesville’s resilience and timely hitting proved decisive in this back-and-forth battle.

Final Score: Gainesville 9 – Chicago 8

Win: Ben Brown 4-3 (2.65)
Loss: Ryan Yarbrough 4-2 (2.37)
Save: Jason Foley #2

Game #6: The Chicago Mobsters defeated the Gainesville Swamp Things 4–1 in a well-pitched contest. Chicago struck first in the opening inning, scoring on a wild pitch. They added another run in the third with a string of singles, and padded their lead in the sixth thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly. Seth Lugo was dominant on the mound for Chicago, striking out 10 over seven innings and allowing just one run. Gainesville’s only tally came in the seventh, when a pair of hits broke up the shutout. Matt Waldron took the loss for Gainesville, giving up three runs in five-plus innings. The Mobsters’ bullpen, led by Griffin Jax and closer Aroldis Chapman, shut the door in the final two frames, with Chapman earning his 30th save. Chicago’s offense was steady, and their pitching staff kept Gainesville in check all night.

Final Score: Chicago 4 – Gainesville 1

Win: Seth Lugo 17-7 (2.30)
Loss: Matt Waldron 5-8 (5.04)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #30

Summary: The Chicago Mobsters continued their dominant run atop the division, taking five out of six games from the Gainesville Swamp Things in a series that showcased their elite pitching and timely offense. The Mobsters set the tone early in the series with explosive innings, including a five-run second and a six-run first in separate games, powered by big bats like Willy Adames, Matt Wallner, and Yordan Alvarez. Adames, in particular, delivered clutch home runs, including a grand slam, while Alvarez and Wallner each added multi-run blasts to keep the pressure on Gainesville’s pitching staff.

On the mound, Chicago’s starters were outstanding. Seth Lugo and Logan Gilbert both turned in dominant performances, each striking out double digits and limiting Gainesville’s opportunities. Hunter Brown delivered a complete-game shutout, further cementing the Mobsters’ reputation as one of the league’s best pitching staffs. Closer Aroldis Chapman was a constant presence, notching four saves in the series and shutting down late Swamp Things rallies.

Despite their struggles this season, the Swamp Things showed resilience, staging a dramatic comeback in their lone win. Colt Keith’s two home runs, including a game-tying three-run shot, and Gleyber Torres’ timely hitting fueled Gainesville’s offense in their upset victory. However, inconsistency and defensive miscues plagued Gainesville throughout the series, and their pitching was often unable to contain Chicago’s relentless lineup.

Overall, the Mobsters’ combination of power hitting, lockdown pitching, and airtight defense proved too much for the Swamp Things. Chicago’s ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and shut down late threats underscored why they remain heavy favorites in the division. Gainesville, meanwhile, will look to build on their lone win and seek more consistency as they look forward to an off season & retooling.

Dallas  Cougars @ Southwest Detroit  Fighting Chihuahuas

Summary: Southwest Detroit Fighting Chihuahuas take 4 of 6 from the Dallas Cougars.

Arboga  Rats @ Selkirk  Steelers

Preview: Selkirk (76-56) in third place but playing well and looking like a solid wildcard. Arboga (47-84) looking to do well in the lottery. Both teams have good pitching but lack a good offence.

Tempe  Tempers @ Valdosta  Snappers

Preview: Tempe visits Valdosta. The Tempers probably have about an .850 winning % since they’ve been playing the Snappers over the years. Can Valdosta put up a fight. Not much of one, as it turned out.
Summary: Tempe outscored Valdosta 48-14. The lone Snappers win was pretty unlikely, as oft-injured Ronald Acuna, Jr. hit a PH grand slam in his 1st AB of the series (game 4). Snappers went on to win in 17 innings. Not sure what was more shocking…the Acuna HR or the 10 innings of scoreless relief from the Snappers pen. And they survived 5 (!) errors to win.

Tempe wins 5 of 6.

Fremont  Cannons @ Harsens Island  Walleye

Motor City  Muscle @ Corktown  Cycle

Summary: Corktown wins the first 3 while the final 3 go to the visitors.   3-3 Series Split.

Baltimore  Comets @ Columbus  Explorers

Preview: Dog days of August draw to a close and Columbus is surprisingly in a playoff race! Good thing September is just about here as we will be juggling the rotation and bullpen the rest of the way and this will give us a few extra bodies to choose from – yay! And the scrappy offense keeps scoring runs – and we have to be at our best when we aren’t playing the top 2 or 3 because we can’t afford to drop any – Triple Creek/Bethesda and Selkirk and Alamo are all right in this thing!! Should be a great September….Now for a 6 pack with Baltimore – always a tough match up, we split the 6 we played in Baltimore….
Game #1: David Peterson (W 7-5) is the star of this one going 8 innings, 1 hit, no runs! Columbus gets 1 in the 3rd and another in the 5th and Tim Herrin locks down the 9th for his 31st save. D.J. Herz (L 6-6) was strong, 7 ip, 6 hits 8ks, but with no run support it wasn’t his day.
FINAL COL 2-0
Game #2: The teams traded runs in the 2nd (1 for BAL, 2 for COL) and the 5th (2 for BAL, 3 for COL) – then Baltimore drew close with another in the 6th to be trailing 5-4. Bryson Stott was having a day, 3 for 5, double run and rbi – but for the 2nd day in a row Jared Triolo was the big bat for Columbus, 2 for 3, run, 3 rbis, double and homer (8). Columbus added insurance runs in the 7th and 8th and Alec Marsh was able to get the win (5-5) with only 5 ip. Alex Faedo did 3 scoreless relief innings and Dylan Floro gets the save (3). Frank Montas takes the loss (9-15).
FINAL COL 7-4
Game #3: Teams again trade runs – this time in the 1st but it’s 3 for Baltimore and 2 for Columbus. Josh Bell uncorks a 3 run homer (18). Kiki Hernandez has a big day for Columbus and sparks the comeback with a 3 for 4 day, 2 rbis, run and D.J. LeMahieu drives in 2 on 2 hits as Columbus parlays 10 hits into a victory. Tobias Myers overcomes the 1st inning to pitch 7 for the win (12-7) and Tim Herrin gets save 32. Hayden Birdsong (4-6) suffers the loss.
FINAL COL 5-3
Game #4: Comets score 2 in the 2nd including a Dominic Canzone solo homer (13). Columbus responds with 1 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd and then tacks on 3 more late for the win. Mitchell Parker (W 12-6) goes 6.1 and Dylan Floro gets the save (4), his 2nd of the week. Tough break for Baltimore when Stott (3 days) and Larnach (5 days)_collide.
FINAL COL 7-2
Game #5: A three run 4th puts Columbus up 4-2 and they never trail again. Once again Jared Triolo has a big day, 2 for 2, 2 runs, rbi, homer (10) and Brendan Donovan adds 3 hits and 2 rbis. Assad grabs the win (8-6) and Tim Herrin notches his 33rd save. Jorge Polanco knocked his 15th homer – solo shot – as part of the Comets scoring but it wasn’t enough.
FINAL COL 6-3
Game #6: David Peterson star game #2 of the week. Peterson goes 7 innings, 7 hits and again NO runs for his 2nd win of the week (8-5). And as in game 1, the Explorers only get 1 run as D.J. Herz (6-7) again is also strong – 7 innings, 4 hits but Columbus put enough of them together in the 2nd that a D.J. LeMahieu rbi double is the games only run.
FINAL COL 1-0
Summary: Columbus gets the sweep – much needed as it seems all the contenders just keep winning as the final stretch is underway. Peterson’s strong performances are putting his name into the pitcher of the week ring. And who knows, maybe that Triolo kid might get some accolades – his teammates sure were fond of his offense this week (to go with his stellar defense).

Cincinnati  Skyliners @ Hollywood  Werewolves

Summary:  Cincinnati comes to town and takes 4 of 6 from the Home town team.

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Titusville  Super Sonics

Summary: Sacramento sweeps Yucaipa.

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Long Beach  Dirt Bags

Summary: Bethesda sweeps Long Beach, outscoring them 62-18.
