Game #1: The Chicago Mobsters dominated the Coconut Creek Crushers with a convincing 5-0 victory. The scoring began in the bottom of the second when Jackson Chourio launched a three-run homer, giving Chicago an early lead. Seth Lugo was outstanding on the mound, striking out 13 over eight shutout innings and allowing just three hits. The Mobsters added insurance runs in the eighth, with Luis Arraez and Dylan Moore crossing the plate on hits from Willy Adames and Yandy Diaz. Offensively, Chicago collected timely hits and capitalized on opportunities, while the Crushers’ bats were silenced throughout the game. Spencer Schwellenbach took the loss for Coconut Creek, surrendering three runs over five innings. The Mobsters’ all-around performance secured a key win at home.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – Coconut Creek 0

Win: Seth Lugo 12-4 (2.04)

Coconut Creek broke through first in the fourth, as Brandon Marsh doubled home Nico Hoerner for a 1-0 lead. Chicago responded in the sixth, tying the game on Matt Wallner’s RBI double and taking the lead on a Yordan Alvarez sacrifice fly. The Mobsters broke it open in the seventh, highlighted by Dylan Moore’s three-run homer, pushing the lead to 5-1. Chicago added another run on an error to make it 6-1. Win: Logan Gilbert 14-4 (2.06)
Loss: Erick Fedde 9-5 (3.21)

Game #3: The Coconut Creek Crushers edged out the Chicago Mobsters in a tense 4-3 victory. The Crushers broke through in the third inning, highlighted by Nico Hoerner’s three-run homer, quickly building a 4-0 lead. Chicago responded in the bottom half with a two-run single from Willy Adames, narrowing the gap. Both starters, Logan Webb for Coconut Creek and Alek Manoah for Chicago, settled in after the early scoring, with Webb tossing 6.1 strong innings and Manoah battling through six. Yordan Alvarez brought the Mobsters within one with a solo homer in the eighth, setting up a dramatic ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Matt Wallner walked and stole two bases, putting the tying run on third with no outs. But Crushers closer Cade Smith struck out two and got Luis Arraez to fly out to deep left, sealing the win for Coconut Creek.

Final Score: Coconut Creek 4 – Chicago 3

Win: Logan Webb 16-2 (2.09)
Loss: Alek Manoah 1-2 (6.43)
Save: Cade Smith #15

Game #4: The Chicago Mobsters edged out the Coconut Creek Crushers in a tense, low-scoring affair, winning 2-1. Both starting pitchers, Bryce Miller for Chicago and Blake Snell for Coconut Creek, were dominant early, racking up strikeouts and keeping the game scoreless through three innings. The Mobsters broke through in the bottom of the fourth, with Yordan Alvarez scoring on a double by Willy Adames, followed by Adames coming home on a single from Jackson Chourio to make it 2-0. The Crushers were held hitless until the sixth, when Nico Hoerner doubled, but Chicago’s Miller worked out of trouble. In the eighth, Brandon Nimmo put Coconut Creek on the board with a solo home run, but that was all the Crushers could muster. Aroldis Chapman came on in the ninth to strike out the final batter and secure the win for Chicago.

Final Score: Chicago 2 – Coconut Creek 1

Win: Bryce Miller 7-4 (2.04)
Loss: Blake Snell 6-3 (3.05)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #19

Game #5: The Chicago Mobsters edged out the Coconut Creek Crushers in a thrilling 4-3 victory. The Mobsters struck first with a two-run homer by Yordan Alvarez in the opening inning. Coconut Creek answered back with an RBI triple from Yandy Diaz and a solo shot by Matt Olson to tie it at 2-2. In the fifth, Chicago capitalized on a defensive miscue, scoring two runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Crushers kept it close, with Alec Bohm’s RBI double in the sixth narrowing the gap to 4-3. Both bullpens held strong in the late innings, with Chicago’s relievers Brant Hurter, Hunter Gaddis, and Aroldis Chapman shutting the door. Chapman notched his 20th save, striking out Geraldo Perdomo to end the game and preserve the win for Seth Lugo, who improved to 13-4. Hunter Greene took the loss despite a solid outing for Coconut Creek.

Final Score: Chicago 4 – Coconut Creek 3

Win: Seth Lugo 13-4 (2.13)
Loss: Hunter Greene 5-7 (2.43)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #20

Game #6: The Chicago Mobsters edged out the Coconut Creek Crushers in a dramatic 3-2 walk-off victory. The Mobsters took an early lead with a solo homer from Luis Arraez in the third and added another run on a sac fly by Riley Greene in the fourth. The Crushers were stymied by Hunter Brown, who pitched 8.2 strong innings, but rallied in the ninth. With two outs, they scored twice off closer Aroldis Chapman, tying the game at 2-2 thanks to clutch hits from Ivan Herrera and Yainer Diaz. In the bottom of the ninth, Riley Greene played hero, launching a solo home run off Mason Miller to end the game. Brown’s strong start was nearly spoiled, but Chapman picked up the win after Greene’s blast, while Miller took the loss. The Mobsters’ defense faltered late, but their offense delivered when it mattered most.

Final Score: Chicago 3 – Coconut Creek 2

Win: Aroldis Chapman 3-0 (3.43)
Loss: Mason Miller 3-3 (2.23)

Summary: In a series that felt every bit like a playoff showdown, the Chicago Mobsters and Coconut Creek Crushers delivered six games of high drama, razor-thin margins, and electric crowds that echoed October baseball. With both teams sitting atop their divisions and boasting elite records, the atmosphere was charged from the first pitch, and the action on the field lived up to the billing.

The Mobsters emerged victorious, taking five of six games, but nearly every contest was decided by the slimmest of margins. Chicago’s pitching staff was the story, with Seth Lugo and Logan Gilbert each turning in dominant starts, and closer Aroldis Chapman slamming the door in multiple nail-biters. The Mobsters’ offense came through in the clutch, highlighted by Yordan Alvarez’s timely home runs and Jackson Chourio’s three-run blast that set the tone early in the series.

Coconut Creek, despite their powerhouse lineup and deep bullpen, found themselves on the wrong end of several late-inning battles. Nico Hoerner’s three-run homer and Cade Smith’s high-wire save in Game 3 gave the Crushers their lone win, but the Mobsters’ resilience was on full display—none more so than in the walk-off finale, where Riley Greene’s ninth-inning homer sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

Throughout the series, the energy in the ballpark was palpable, with every pitch and at-bat carrying postseason weight. Both teams flashed their strengths: Chicago’s knack for winning close games and Coconut Creek’s explosive offense. But it was the Mobsters’ ability to execute under pressure that proved decisive.

If this series is a preview of a potential playoff matchup, fans are in for a treat. With both teams trading blows and the outcome hanging in the balance until the final out, this was baseball at its finest—a battle between two titans, with the Mobsters narrowly claiming the upper hand.

Sacramento  Capitals @ Long Beach  Dirt Bags

Summary: Sacramento comes south and kicks the crap out of Long Beach in winning 5 of the 6 games.

Prairie  Falcons @ Columbus  Explorers

Preview: Prairie (33-55) comes to Columbus (53-37) with spoiler on their minds. Columbus looks to stand firm, rely on defense, weird pitching, and timely hitting – real timely since they don’t pack a lot of punch. But they do have several new faces ….
Game #1: Javier Assad makes his Columbus debut and it could have been better, and could have been worse. He gives up 5 hits, 3 walks and 3 runs in 6.1 innings – the hits were scattered amond 5 batters as the Falcons got stuff going, but not in bunches. Meanwhile the Explorer bats woke up eventually and took a 4-3 lead in the 7th, added insurance in the 8th and hung on to win 5-3! Brendan Donovan was the big guy, 2 for 4, 3 rbis. McCutchen (4) connected for a solo shot. Jonathan King (5-1) gets the win in relief with Bivens getting his 1st save! Ryan Pepiot, in spite of 12 ks in 7 innings, takes the loss (5-8).
FINAL 5-3 COL
Game #2: Andrew Benintendi powers a SF in the 3rd for the games 1st run – but that was the last of the runs for Prairie as newcomer Alex Faedo goes 7.1, giving up 4 hits, fanning 10 and that lone run. He picks up the win (1-0). Meanwhile the Explorers plate 2 in the 3rd, 5th and 6th to win it going away. Andrew McCutchen goes 3 for 4, with a rbi and 3 runs to lead the attack (which was also aided by 5 walks from the Falcons pitchers – 4 by Nathan Eovaldi – and then he got word he was traded! Bad day – they send you away (good luck Cincinnati).
FINAL 6-1 COL
Game #3: Columbus storms out with 5 runs in the 1st – and that was more than enough as the pitching staff gives up only 3 runs. Andrew Benintendi does get 3 hits (2 doubles), but for the most part the rest of the team stayed dormant. New man Trent Grisham socks a big 3 run blast (6) in the that opening inning! Brendan Donovan has another multi hit, rbi game and hits his 10th homer. Mitchel Parker tried to get a CG, but tired after 8.1 innings – but he got the win (9-5). Miles Mikolas was the 1st inning dealer of canon fodder – gets the loss (0-4). Officially he faced 5 batters, 0 ip, 5 hits ending with the 3 run homer and 5 total runs.
STAT OF THE DAY – Joe Kelly – comes in to relieve in the 5th, fans 3, starts the 6th, fans 2 – for 5 straight Ks. Then as the 6th batter steps in, Kelly steps out, tosses a pitch and it barely makes it to the plate – he left in some discomfort and will miss at least the next 6 days!
FINAL 7-3 COL
Game #4: This was a scoreless game through 5 – then in the 6th Jake McCarthy singles in 2 and Columbus adds another for a 3-0 lead. Tobias Myers (W 9-5) and two relievers make it stand with Tim Herrin getting the save (19). Myers gave up 3 hits, fanned 9 in 7 innings. D.L. Hall (1-9) takes the tough loss as he gets no support.
FINAL 3-0 COL
Game #5: A bit of a wild game as the “Ace” David Peterson is roughed up for 3 runs in the 3rd on a Masataka Yoshida 3 run blast (7). Peterson had already given up a Luis Robert solo homer (8) on the games 1st pitch! 4-0 as the Explorers come to the plate in their half of the 3rd.That’s when Chris Paddack began to lose it. Columbus plates 4 runs to tie it including a Varsho 2 run blast (5). Prairie regains the lead in the 4th with another solo homer, this time Oswaldo Cabrera (5). Columbus ties it back up with 1 in the 5th, then Henry Davis drives in the go ahead run (6-5) with a SF in the 6th. But then it’s Columbus’s turn to respond and they put up another 4 spot which included a 2 run Triolo homer (6). Andrew McCutchen goes 4 for 6, 2 rbis, Garrett Stubs goes 4 for 5, 2 rbis, they were the leadoff and 9th hitters in the lineup, respectively. 8 hits from the pair – and 20 hits overall for Columbus! Needless to say, Peterson hung around long enough for the win (6-4) and Bivens ended up with another save (2). And Paddack did not take the loss even after giving up 12 hits and 5 runs in 4.1 innings. That honor went to Phil Bickford who pitched 3.2 innings, 8 hits and 5 runs.
FINAL 10-6 COL
Game #6: The finale was the closest game even after Columbus scores 2 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd. Sporting a 6-0 lead after 4, you might feel comfortable. Javier Assad looked like he was worth the big price to get him, but then an Oswaldo Cabrera homer (6) and a Benintendi rbi single, it was 6-2 going into the 7th. Then the Falcons got some things together and plated 3 runs to draw within 1 at 6-5. Then in the 8th a PH rbi double from Kyle Stowers ties it up! In the Columbus dugout, Javier Assad put his head down as Dylan Floro blows the save – well, he did inherit a couple of runners. But then Floro gets the win (2-2) when Columbus comes back to score in the bottom of the 8th when PR Johan Rojas scores on an Orlando Arcia rbi single – which made up for blundered double steal where Prairie deftly went for the trail runner! Tim Herrin comes in for the save (20) – but walks 2 to make it interesting at least.
FINAL 7-6 COL
Summary: Explorers very happy to get the sweep – and managed to rest a few guys as needed. They were able to take advantage of the rebuilding Prairie pitching staff (with Yamamoto still a couple days away from injury recovery) and we got some timely pitching. And when it got tough, we were able to put a few things together.
We need to keep the momentum going – get some more timely pitching – and productive hitting. Next week we are on the road at Yucaipa!
