Virginia  Sluggers @ Chicago  Mobsters

Preview: The Chicago Mobsters (53-49), currently leading the American League Central, are set to face off against the Virginia Sluggers (51-51), who are in 4th place in the American League West. This series promises to be a competitive matchup as both teams are fighting to solidify their positions in their respective divisions.

Chicago Mobsters
Record: 53-49
Strengths: The Mobsters have a balanced team with a solid pitching staff and a lineup capable of producing runs in key moments. Their consistency has been a major factor in maintaining their lead in the AL Central. The major trade made right before the start of this series doesn;t hurt either.

Virginia Sluggers
Record: 51-51
Strengths: The Sluggers have shown resilience and the ability to bounce back from tough losses. Their offense can be explosive, making them a dangerous opponent despite their current standing in the AL West.

Series Odds
Chicago Mobsters: 60%
Virginia Sluggers: 40%

Given the Mobsters’ slight edge in overall performance and consistency, they are favored to win the series. However, the Sluggers’ potential for offensive outbursts means they cannot be underestimated. This series could very well come down to which team can capitalize on their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

Game #1: The Chicago Mobsters edged out the Virginia Sluggers 8-7 in 11 innings. The game began with strong pitching from both sides, keeping the score tied at zero until the fourth inning when Eloy Jimenez hit a two-run homer for Virginia. Chicago responded in the fifth with an RBI single by Luis Arraez, cutting the lead to 2-1.

The Mobsters tied the game in the sixth inning and took a 7-2 lead by the eighth, thanks to key hits from Matt Ford and Bryan Reynolds. However, Virginia rallied back in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five runs to tie the game at 7-7, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Arraez.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th inning when Andrew McCutchen‘s clutch hit drove in Julio Rodriguez for the winning run, sealing the victory for Chicago.

Final Score: Chicago 8 – Virginia 7 (11 Innings)

Win: Jhoan Duran 1-1 (2.65)
Loss: Eli Morgan 4-1 (3.28)

Game #2: The Chicago Mobsters dominated the Virginia Sluggers with a decisive 9-1 victory. Logan Gilbert, recently acquired from Columbus, pitched an outstanding game, allowing only one earned run on five hits over seven and two-thirds innings, striking out seven. The Sluggers took an early lead in the second inning with a run scored by Palacios, but the Mobsters quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs off Dane Dunning, who struggled with control and allowed seven hits and four walks. Chicago’s offense was relentless, with key hits from Solano, Taveras, and Moreno, who collectively drove in multiple runs. The Mobsters added two more runs in the eighth inning to seal the win. Devin Williams and Felix Bautista provided solid relief to close out the game.

Final Score: Chicago 9 – Virginia 1

Win: Logan Gilbert 10-3 (3.10)
Loss: Dane Dunning 11-4 (3.25)

Game #3: The Chicago Mobsters secured a 5-2 victory over the Virginia Sluggers, with Hunter Brown delivering a stellar performance on the mound. Brown struck out 12 batters over eight and a third innings, allowing just two runs. The Mobsters took an early lead in the first inning with a bloop single by Julio Rodriguez that scored Yandy Diaz. The Sluggers tied it up in the third, but Chicago responded with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by RBI singles from Alex Bregman and Andrew McCutchen. Virginia’s Eloy Jimenez hit a solo home run in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback. Bryan Abreu closed out the game, inducing a double play to secure his 20th save.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – Virginia 2

Win: Hunter Brown 4-43 (3.49)
Loss: Joey Estes 2-3 (3.44)
Save: Bryan Abreu #20

Game #4: Virginia’s Sluggers dominated the Chicago Mobsters with a decisive 12-1 victory. The Sluggers jumped ahead early, scoring five runs in the first inning, highlighted by Eloy Jimenez‘s three-run triple and Mike Ford‘s two-run homer. Bryce Miller struggled on the mound, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits, including three home runs, over just three innings. Despite his rough outing, Miller stayed in the game to save the bullpen, taking one for the team.

Joe Ryan, on the other hand, was stellar for Virginia, pitching seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing only three hits while striking out ten. The Sluggers continued to pile on the runs, with George Springer adding a three-run homer in the second inning and Rafael Devers hitting a solo shot in the fourth.

Chicago managed to avoid a shutout with a late run in the eighth inning, but it was too little, too late. Virginia’s offense was relentless, and their pitching was dominant, leading to a comprehensive win.

Final Score: Virginia 12 – Chicago 1

Win: Joe Ryan 5-9 (3.90)
Loss: Bryce Miller 7-5 (5.02)

Game #5: The Virginia Mobsters overcame an early deficit to defeat the Chicago Sluggers 7-5. The Sluggers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Bryan Reynolds‘ RBI double and Anthony Rizzo‘s single. However, the Mobsters quickly responded in the bottom of the first with a three-run homer by Willy Adames to tie the game.

The Sluggers regained the lead in the third inning with a solo home run by Bryan Reynolds. The Mobsters tied it again in the fifth with a solo shot by Riley Greene. Virginia took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Luis Arraez tripled and scored on a bloop single by Yandy Diaz.

In the sixth, the Sluggers tied the game once more with back-to-back doubles by Whit Merrifield and Anthony Rizzo. The Mobsters regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Riley Greene. Yordan Alvarez added insurance with a solo homer in the eighth.

Felix Bautista closed the game for the Mobsters, securing his eighth save of the season.

Final Score: Chicago 7 – Virginia 5

Win: Jesus Luzardo 11-7 (3.69)
Loss: Yonny Chirinos 3-14 (6.52)
Save: Felix Bautista #8

Game #6: The Chicago Mobsters edged out the Virginia Sluggers with a final score of 6-4. The game saw an early lead by the Mobsters, with Luis Arraez doubling and scoring in the first inning. Virginia tied it up in the fourth with a solo homer by Rafael Devers. Chicago regained the lead in the fifth with a two-run homer by Riley Greene, making it 3-1.

Virginia fought back in the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 4-3 lead, highlighted by Whit Merrifield‘s RBI double and Eloy Jimenez‘s clutch single. However, Chicago responded in the eighth with a game-tying solo shot by Greene and a two-run homer by Yandy Diaz to secure the win.

Yennier Cano earned the win, improving to 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA, while Gregory Soto took the loss, dropping to 2-4 with a 4.61 ERA. Bryan Abreu closed the game, earning his 21st save.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Virginia 4

Win: Yennier Cano 2-2 (2.72)
Loss: Gregory Soto 2-4 (4.61)
Save: Bryan Abreu #21

Summary: The Chicago Mobsters won the series against the Virginia Sluggers, taking 5 out of 6 games. Key performances included Logan Gilbert‘s dominant pitching in Game 2, allowing only one run over seven and two-thirds innings, and Hunter Brown‘s 12 strikeouts in Game 3. Chicago’s offense was led by clutch hits from players like Andrew McCutchen, Riley Greene, and Yandy Diaz. Despite a blowout loss in Game 4, where Bryce Miller struggled, the Mobsters showcased resilience and depth. Virginia’s Eloy Jimenez and Bryan Reynolds had notable offensive contributions, but Chicago’s balanced attack and strong bullpen, highlighted by Bryan Abreu‘s multiple saves, secured the series victory.

Hollywood  Werewolves @ Tijuana  Bottle Rockets

Preview: Tijuana hosts Hollywood for 6.
Summary: Hollywood takes the series 4-2.

Gainsville  Swamp Things @ Dallas  Cougars

Summary: Dallas wins one extra inning game, but loses the other 5 games. The Swamp Things hitters wore out the Cougars pitching staff.

Tempe  Tempers @ Corktown  Cycle

Preview: The yearly measuring stick for most teams on the cusp of the playoffs are the Tempers. The fans always love when Tempe invades their town. The buzz is always different. There was once a really good chance these 2 could face off in the wild card round, but Corktown has been hot as of late and crawled out of the 8 spot and is now 1 game out of the East before this series.
Game #1: Corktown 4-1
W. Brayan Bello 11-5
L. Yu Darvish 6-2
S. Bryce Jarvis (6)
Game #2: The Cycle awake the sleeping giants. Corktown throws their rookie ace to try and take a big 2-0 series lead but Tempe is just way too much overall. J.D. Martinez and Marcel Ozuna exchange back to back solo shots in this to erase an early Corktown 2-0 lead.

Tempe 7-3
W. Cy Garret Cole 16-2 (CG)
L. Tanner Bibee (5-9)

Game #3: The Temper offense continues to feast on Cycle pitching

Tempe 12-2
W. Sonny Gray 11-4
L. Jose Berrios 10-7

Game #4: Corktown blows a 3-2 lead in the 8th and are left wondering what they can possibly to to salvage this series from becoming a total disaster.

Tempe 4-3
W. Ryan Brasier 6-2 (Fun when the WP also gets a blown save)
L Bryce Jarvis 2-2
S. Andres Munoz (23)

Game #5: Down 4-2 in the 9th Corktown scraps across a run then ties the game with a bases loaded walk of all things. While unloading their bench in the process. Who knew they would play another 4 innings. It was Jose Caballero who came in to pinch run in the 9th that gets the walk off base hit in the 13th. That was the shot in the arm the Cycle needed, and the fans who stayed were rewarded. 12 total pitchers between the 2 teams and 27 position players used.

Corktown 5-4 (13)
W. Bryce Jarvis 3-2
L. Fernando Cruz 2-3

Game #6: Rookie Anthony Volpe breaks a 1-1 tie with a 2 run shot as the Cycle got Darvish again. Second year pitcher Brayan Bello gets his second victory of the series.

Corktown 4-2
W. Brayan Bello 12-5
L. Yu Darvish 6-3
S. Emilio Pagan (13)

Summary: Top to bottom Tempe has everything covered. Corktown had enough to salvage the series to a 3-3 split and stay very much alive in the NL East race down the stretch. These 2 could meet again in October. As always one of the most fun and intense series to play every year.

Motor City  Muscle @ Coconut Creek  Crushers

Preview: CCC hoping to rest some guys without blowing the series.
Game #1: CCC takes a 2-1 lead into the 8th. MCM then capitalizes on two errors to blow it open with 8 runs. MCM wins 9-4.
Game #2: Another tight game late. MCM lead 4-3 after 8. They again beat up the CCC pen and win easily 7-3.
Game #3: German and the bullpen right the ship as CCC cruises to a 6-0 win.
Game #4: Snell cruises but the pen almost blew it again. CCC hangs on to win 5-4.
Game #5: Webb K’s 13 and the CCC offense pops 4 HRs to cruise to an easy 8-2 win.
Game #6: MCM lead 2-1 after 6. Olson hits a 2-run HR in the 7th to take the lead. Hoerner hits a 2-run HR in the 8th to ice it. CCC wins 5-2.
Summary: After getting beat up in the first two games, CCC battles back to win the series 4-2.

Long Beach  Dirt Bags @ Columbus  Explorers

Preview: Explorers make 16 player, 2 pick trade and scratch their heads. However, this week we outhomer the opponents 13-3! OK, so it was two weak pitching teams, still the fans were excited. Did we win them all?
Game #1: NOPE – new starter JP Sears drops his first start – but hey, maybe it was because Kyle Harrison (W 2-0) for Long Beach pitched a 6 hit, 9 k, CG shutout!! (However, he won’t be ready for his next start – but what the heck, he got a big win. And Freddy Fermin (maybe I should trade for him) goes 4 for 5, 2 runs/rbis led the 15 hit Dirt Bags attack! Spoiled Jason Delay and his 3 for 4 day, single, triple, homer (2). Sears the loss (6-7)
Game #2: Long Beach tees off on Jose Urquidy for 7 runs in the 1st two innings! Mervis with a 3 run triple, Ortiz a two run single pace the offense. BUT NOT SO FAST – somehow the Explorers decide they actually can win this one as they get get single runs in the 2nd and 4th, and 2 runs each n the 3rd, 7th and 8th to snatch an 8-7 win from sure defeat! Ezekiel Duran clubs 2 homers (6), newcomer Edmundo Sosa (3), Jared Triolo (4) and Miguel Andujar (1) also homer! New reliever Bernardino gets the win in relief (1-2), Bradford takes the loss (4-7) and the BS (3).
Game #3: Explorers get 3 in the 1st, then fall behind 4-3 in the 3rd as Mervis (10) homers for 3. But Columbus gets 3 more in the bottom of the 3rd, adds 4 in the 7th and grabs a big 10-5 win. Duran (8) homers again! Lambert (5-9) gets the win, Garcia (2) the save. Feltner suffers the loss (5-11).
Game #4: Limited scoring but Columbus builds a 4-0 lead through 7, but Kiermaier (9) homers in the 8th to break up the shutout. Duran (9) homers yet again and Valdez (4) joins him. Clarke Schmidt goes the distance tossing a 5 hitter with 12 ks for the win (5-15). Spiers takes the loss (1-8).
Game #5: Peguero gets 2 hits for Long Beach, however, the team only gets 3 (and a walk) and only 30 batters face Colubus’s starter David Peterson as he blanks the Dirt Bags in a 4-0 shutout win (6-12). Wicks (0-1) takes the loss and it was basically over in the 1st as Columbus scores twice, and they added 2 more in the 6th. Daulton Varsho goes 1 for 3, with a homer (12), 3 rbis and a SF.
Game #6: Irvin gets emergency start for Dirt Bags – Sears gets his 2nd Columbus start. Strange how he starts the 2 games we lose in the series – although he was up 6-3 on his watch. Columbus kept socking 2 run homers, Arias (5), Andujar (2) and Sosa (4) and were up 6-0 after 5. Then Long Beach scores 3 in the 6th, 3 more in the 7th and we’re tied up. Kiermaier (10) homers in the 6th for 1 as part of those 3. Columbus regains the lead 7-6 in the 8th, but Long Beach ties it in the 9th then grabs the 8-7 lead in the 10th. However, Columbus ties it in the 10th – but blunders on the base paths and Long Beach scores in the 11th and Justice (W 1-0) keeps it that way in the 9-8 Long Beach 11 inning win. Lots of LB base stealing helped the cause!
Summary: So, Columbus managed a 4-2 week, further lowering their chances in the lottery come the end of the season. But we may not be good, but we’re entertaining.

Southbend  Lynx @ Mesa  Solar Sox

Summary: Mesa Bullpen chokes away two games later or else it could have been 4 games to 2 the other way.

Harsens Island  Walleye @ Arboga  Rats

Preview: Harsens Island vs Arboga.
Game #1: Looks like a bullpen game. Arboga jumps all over Woo for 6 runs
Arboga 6 Harsens Island 3.
Game #2: Arboga 4 Harsens Island 2
Game #3: Rodriguez out dulles Singer.
Harsens Island 3 Arboga 2
Game #4: Syndergaared pushed back time to go 8 innings.
Arboga 3 Harsens Island 2 (11)
Game #5: Walker with a No-No.
Arboga 6 Harsens Island 0
Game #6: Another bullpen game.
Arboga 8 Harsens Island 3
Summary: Arboga takes 5 of six.

Detroit  Crime @ Fremont  Cannons

Preview: Detroit in a rebuilding year. Fremont looking to stay atop the East and within pace of the two Western Wild Cards. First series was a 7-0 Fremont sweep in Detroit. This series will see something the Fremont fanbase has never witnessed at home…a non-combined NO-HITTER!
Game #1: Madison Bumgarner (DET) vs Griffin Canning (FRE)

Detroit gets going with some early fireworks (a theme in this series) with a Bryce Harper 2-run HR in the 1st. Fremont gets one back with Teoscar Hernandez’s RBI single in bottom of the inning. Kyles Schwarber singles home two in the 5th, then Fremont ties it up in the 6th at 4-4. Tommy Pham’s infield hit puts DET up 5-4 in the 8th, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singles in a run in the bottom on the ninth to tie it 5-5. Yasmani Grandal hits a big 2-run HR in the 10th to put DET up 7-5. Fremont gets the tying run to the plate but Yoan Moncada is picked off at 3rd to end the game. DET wins 7-5.

W: Alexis Diaz (4-6)
L: Yimi Garcia (1-2)

HR: DET- Bryce Harper (13), Yasmani Grandal (4); FRE- none

Game #2: Zach Wheeler (DET) vs Scott Alexander (FRE)

Another 2-run HR to open the game for DET, this time Kyle Schwarber. An ARBI single from Austin Hays in the bottom of the inning bring in 1 for Fremont. An Elly de la Cruz HR in the second toes it at 2-2. Fremont takes the lead with a 2-run HR from Mike Yastrzemski in the 7th, then is matched by a Manny Machado 2-run HR in the 8th. Yastrzemski walks it off with his 2nd HIR of the game in the 9th and Fremont wins 5-4.

W: Shelby Miller (4-2)
L: Alexis Diaz (4-7)

HR: DET- Kyle Schwarber (25), Manny Machado (17); FRE- Mike Yastrzemski 2 (10), Elly de la Cruz (10)

Game #3: Sean Manaea (DET) vs Kodai Senga (FRE)

Senga has had a few disastrous starts this year; this was another. H walks 5, allows 3 HR, and leaves after 5 innings down 8-0. Shohei Ohtani finally gets Fremont on the board in the bottom of the 5th with a 2-run HR, then Nolan Gorman hits a back-to-back shot to cut it to 8-3. Fremont gets two more in the 6th to cut it to 8-5. Teoscar Hernandez singles in a run in the 7th to bring it to 8-6. A Josh Donaldson solo HR is followed by a Nolan Gorman RBI single in the 8th to tie it up at 8-8.

A Bobby Witt error and Martin Maldonado PB in the 9th puts Teoscar Hernandez on 2nd with no outs; however, he is picked off to end that threat. An single and error puts Elias Diaz on 2nd. After an IBB to Elly de la Cruz, Carlos Correa gets on with the 3rd Detroit error of the inning to load the bases with two outs. Manuel Margot then comes up with the walk-off single, as Fremont comes back from 8 down to win 9-8.

W: Daniel Palencia (1-0)
L: Jesse Scholtens (0-6)

HR: DET- Manny Machado (18), Andy Ibanez (10), Corey Julks (4); FRE- Shohei Ohtani (27), Nolan Gorman (19), Josh Donaldson (5)

Game #4: Ryan Weathers (DET) vs Garrett Whitlock (FRE)

Fremont enjoys an early 1-0 lead after 1, but a Kyle Schwarber 3-run HR in the second spoils that. Fremont gets one back in the 2nd with a Carlos Correa HR, but after that it’s a romp for Detroit as they go on to win 11-2. The 1st game in the series with a decision for a starter.

W: Ryan Weathers (3-5)
L: Garrett Whitlock (11-4)

HR: DET- Tommy Pham (9), Patrick Wisdom (15), Bobby Witt Jr. (16), Kyle Schwarber (26); FRE- Carlos Correa (11)

Game #5: Aaron Nola (DET) vs Sandy Alcantara (FRE)

Fremont gets on board with two in the fourth, assisted by an Aaron Nola error. A Tommy Pham error Iinthe 5th brings in another Fremont run to go up 3-0. Meanwhile, Sandy Alcantara is on a roll, and makes it into the ninth without allowing a hit. A bad throw by Josh Rojas is made up for by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and there’s one away. Bobby Witt Jr. is barely nipped on a grounder to 3rd on the next play. A high fly to center is squeezed by Austin Hays and Sandy Alcantara finishes with the first non-combined no-hitter thrown by the Cannons in Fremont!

Alcantara walked 3 and struck out nine. Fremont left 11 on-base so was grateful for the Detroit errors.

W: Sandy Alcantara (14-5)
L: Aaron Nola (8-7)

HR: None

Game #6: Austin Gomber (DET) vs Shohei Ohtani (FRE)

Kyle Schwarber gets a solo HR in the 1st to put Detroit up, but Fremont responds with 5 in the bottom of the inning, with the big blow being a Byron Buxton Baltimore Special. That should have been enough with Ohtani on the mound, but Andy Ibanez triples in two in the 2nd, and Bryce Harper’s 2-run HR in the 3rd ties it at 5-5. Remont goes up 1 in the 4th, but Detroit ties it again in the 5th. Detroit tacks on two more in the 6th for the 8-6 lead. Nolan Gorman ties it with a 2-run HR in the 7th. Both teams fail to score again in regulation, but Patrick Wisdom puts Detroit up 9-8 in the 11th. Detroit adds another when Fremont opts for the double play over the runner at 3rd. Daniel Hudson gets the Cannons to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to close out the finale and Detroit wins 10-8. Ohtani gives up 8 runs in this one.

W: Daniel Hudson (1-0)
L: J.B. Bukauskas (0-1)

HR: Kyle Schwarber (27), Bryce Harper (14), Patrick Wisdom (16); FRE- Nolan Gorman (20), Byron Buxton (10)

Summary: The series ends in a 3-3 split. If Detroit had played better defense this series would have gone their way. If Fremont could have limited the multi-run HRs or had better RP available for the late innings this could have gone the other way.

Next up: Detroit comes home to play Motor City, and Fremont hosts Southbend in a tough stretch of games.
