Southbend Lynx @ Gainsville Swamp Things |
|
|---|---|
| Preview: | Southbend heads to Gainesville for a 6 game set. While both teams are in 3rd of their respective divisions, Southbend has a fantastic record it just happens to reside in one of the best divisions in the league. The easily hold one of the wild card spots this late into the year. Gainesville is below .500 but still battling at a chance a division title. |
| Game #1: | Both starters battled as it was a 1-0 Gainesville lead going into the 7th. Southbend got themselves the lead in the top half with 2 runs including a solo shot from Eduardo Escobar. Gainesville tied it back up in the bottom half. The difference in the game ended up being the bottom of the 8th as Peguero couldn’t overcome an error and gave up 3 which included a 2 run home run by Spencer Steer.
Gainesville 5 W: D. Coulombe (3-3) |
| Game #2: | A quick bounce back for Southbend as they jumped on Jack Flaherty in the 1st innings scoring 4 runs which was aided by a Max Muncy 3 run blast. That is all the offense that was needed as the bullpen for Southbend took over in the 5th after Henry got into some trouble. The pen yielded just 1 run the rest of the way.
Southbend 4 W: C. Sands (1-0) |
| Game #3: | A second game in a row that the Lynx did not need a lot of offense to take the game. Bo Bichette and Jake Fraley both went yard for Southbend while the pitching was lights out. Only 1 run was given up on a Max Kepler single in the 8th and it was easy street the rest of the way. Nick Pivetta was pulled early for Southbend but in 5.1 he managed 8 strikeouts on only 5 base runners (3 hits, a hit batter, and a walk). Halfway through the series Southbend is taking care of business.
Southbend 6 W: N. Pivetta (10-6) |
| Game #4: | Zach Eflin recently returned from injury for Gainesville and boy did they need it. Southbend had no answer for his arsenal as he pulled off the complete game shutout. Over 9 innings he gave up 4 hits, 2 of which were doubles and a single walk while striking out 9 Lynx hitters. Spencer Steer hit another home run and also had himself a double on a day where he drove in 3 of the 4 runs for Gainesville. We got to the final two games of the series split 2-2.
Gainesville 4 W: Z. Eflin (10-4) |
| Game #5: | The bats came alive for Gainesville as they quickly chased Oviedo in the 4th inning as he gave up 8. Max Kepler had a home run but Gleyber Torres was the star for Gainesville in this one going 3-3 with a triple and a home run, while waking twice. He drove in 6 on the day. Zac Gallen didn’t quite match the performance of Eflin in game 4 but he went 7 giving up 1 earned while striking out 8. For Southbend, Kyle Tucker smashed a 1 run triple but the team managed only 4 other hits the rest of the game.
Gainesville 13 W: Z. Gallen (5-8) |
| Game #6: | This one was truly the game of the week between these teams. In the top of the 3rd Southbend got 4 runs on the board which included a huge 3 run homer from Kyle Tucker. He also got himself a double in the game. However, in the bottom half Gainesville responded with 3 of their own thanks to a Gleyber Torres 3 run shot. The pitching settled down and no one did anything offensively until Luis Robert Jr. tied the game up with a solo home run in the 8th off Kelly. Both teams were held scoreless in the 9th and to extras we went. Coming into the game Southbend was 10-2 in extras while Gainesville sported a 1-8 record. So just based on record it didn’t look good for Gainesville. Both teams were held scoreless in the 10th. In the top of the 11th Southbend had Raley, Fraley, and Muncy go down in order. The bottom half saw McCormick drop in a bloop single followed up by Gonzales getting hit by a pitch and Suzuki getting walked. Bases loaded no one out for Gleyber Torres. He had the 3 run home run in the 3rd and again got the ball out of the infield. Soto made the grab but McCormick had too much speed and tagged for the winning run. The script managed to be flipped with extra inning games and Gainesville pulled it out.
Gainesville 5 W: H. Milner (5-3) |
| Summary: | Gainesville managed to pull off the series win taking 4 of 6. A huge set for the Swamp Things to attempt to keep pace with Tijuana and Chicago in the central. On the flipside Southbend has little to worry about, they hold a 62-40 record and feel safe when it comes to the postseason at the moment. They also remain alive in the wild division chase that already has 3 teams with over 60 wins. |
