Corktown  Cycle @ Portland  Lumber Jax

Preview: Corktown (59-73) travels to Portland (63-69) for a 6 game set. Both teams come into the series fighting for the final spot of the playoffs in the National League with Portland currently holding the 8th spot and Corktown in 9th.
Game #1: Corktown wins in a 15 inning thrill ride 6-5. W Okert 5-2 L Gott 1-6 S Pagan 3. The loss puts Portland on a 5 game losing streak as they are stumbling down the stretch. Corktown got it started in the 1st with 2 runs off Kyle Freeland thanks to a 2 run triple by Ahmed Rosario. Portland took a 3-2 lead thanks to solo shots in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th by Jose Iglesias, Max Kepler, and Mike Moustakas. With Milner on the mound in the 8th Corktown tied it up when Jazz Chisholm STOLE HOME following a 2 out triple. Both teams tack on 2 in the 10th due to some sloppy play by Corktown. Ryan Mountcastle hits the winning solo shot in the top of the 15th. Big win for Corktown.
Game #2: Final score Portland 8 – Corktown 2. W Mahle 10-5 L Rogers 0-5. A game that was close until it wasn’t it the bottom of the 8th when Portland scores 4. Royce Lewis gave the early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the 1st. In the 2nd an error and a walk bit the Cycle to give Portland a 3-0 lead after Robert and Arroyo follow up with singles. The 4th inning saw a run from both team as Danny Jansen went yard for his 12th and an RBI single from Nevin, 4-1. A couple scoreless innings by Mahle and Rogers followed and then in the top of the 7th Corktown got another back on a Verdugo single 4-2. Then the bottom of the 8th happened…2 walks, an error by the pitcher Bellatti, a dropped fly ball by Miller in left, and a 3 run double by Arroyo flipped the game upside down for good.
Game #3: Final Portland 4 – Corktown 1. W Gallen 11-9 L Ray 7-11 S Gott 1. Robbie Ray was really the story here even though he gave up all 4 runs and the loss. He struck out Portland 14 times, 18 total when LeClerc got 4 of his own in relief. Gallen goes 8 strong on 2 hits and 1 run with 9 punch outs. Back to back home runs by Torres (number 30 on the year) and Kepler in the 2nd were all Portland really needed in the game. In the 3rd Portland scored on a CJ Cron single and got their 4th run in the 6th on a Moustakas double. Corktown scored their lone run in the 5th on an RBI single by Kelenic.
Game #4: Final Portland 12 – Corktown 1. W Marquez 6-9 L Berrios 10-8. Berrios was going for his 11th win in a row but was chased early after going 1.1 and giving up 7 runs. The Portland pitching was able to get Corktown to scatter 7 hits and also while walking 6, managed to get 11 runners stranded. By the end of the 4th the score was 10-0 and Corktown did what they could just to get through the game. Royce Lewis was a double shy of the cycle with 4 RBIs while Seiya Suzuki contributed 2 home runs and 4 RBI.
Game #5: Final Portland 8 – Corktown 7 in 10 innings. W Peralta 3-4 L Pagan 0-4 BS Milner 4. The bats for Portland came out on fire following game 4 and ran out to a 6-1 lead after 3, chasing the Corktown starter for the 2nd game in a row. However, momentum completely shifted in the 6th when Portland pulled Eflin as he is running on limited availability the rest of the season. Milner came in and gave up the 7-2 lead when Corktown slapped 5 on the board to tie it. Singles by Verdugo and Toro were followed up by a Bleday RBI double 7-3. With two outs, Rosario hits another triple in the series to make it 7-5. Chris Taylor was the next batter and he slapped a 2-run shot just inside the foul pole to tie it up! Relivers for both teams from that point on were absolutely shutting down hitters. In the bottom of the 10th Portland put it away when Robert led off with a single, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and then scored on a walk off single by Spencer Torkelson.
Game #6: Final Corktown 7 – Portland 2. W Gray 8-13 L Freeland 9-11. Corktown ended the series the way they started it with a win. The game was never really in question score wise, but Portland was leaving runners all over the bases. Both Lowe (20th of the year) and Dalbec got themselves home runs to keep the game out of reach. Corktown was able twice to turn double plays with Moustakas at the plate with Portland threatening. A great performance by Gray to allow contact and trust the defense to make plays as he went 7.1 and only gave up 2. Bellatti was flawless in the 5 batters he faced to make sure that door never opened.
Summary: Portland takes the 4 middle games as Corktown salvages 2 in the series. A real sandwich of results. Ahmed Rosario led Corktown in the series with 5 RBI to go along with 2 triples. Nathaniel Lowe has 6 hits with a 2B, HR, and 4 RBI. Robbie Ray even in a loss was impressive with his 14 K performance over 5.2 innings (82% of outs were k’s. Zac Gallen had the best start for Portland with 8 innings of 2 hit 1 run ball and 9 k’s. Wandy Peralta was impressive out of the pen all series logging 5.2 innings with 2 hits and 4 k’s. Hitting wise Royce Lewis went 6/16 (.375) with 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Christian Arroyo was 7/12 (.583) with 2 2B, 6 RBI, 5 runs scored.

Record post series – Portland 67-71 Corktown 61-77.

Chicago  Mobsters @ Virginia  Sluggers

Preview: When you have a team from Chicago bringing one of the best rotations to town with a bullpen that has you facing two 19’s and three grade 22’s and above,…well, you’re gonna lose a lot of games,…because VIR can’t hit a lick suddenly.

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Valdosta  Snappers

Summary: Bandicoots take 4 of 6 in a low scoring series.

Selkirk  Steelers @ Columbus  Explorers

Preview: A really good Selkirk team (90-42) – but 17 games out of 1st behind – well you all know who, the EE – comes to Columbus to maybe dash the wildcard hope of the Explorers. Columbus, playing a lot better than everyone (including us) expected, is fighting for a spot and added a couple of arms to the pitching staff this past week…
Game #1: Selkirk (and Cal Quantrill) say – not so fast you Explorers. Quantrill 6 hits Columbus for 6 innings – no runs. Bullpen matches and the Steelers put up 6 runs in the shutout win. Aroldis Garcia smacks a 2 run homer (25) to pace the attack.
SEL 6-10-0 WP Quantrill (15-9)
COL 0- 9-2 LP Josh Winder (11-4)
Game #2: Columbus comes back and scores 3 runs in 3 different innings to support David Peterson. He tires in the 7th giving up a solo shot to Garci (2) and a 2 run shot to Marcus Semian (28) but it was too little, too late. Columbus gets homers from Tapia (5), Varsho (20) and their monster Robinson Chirinos (8)!
SEL 3- 6-1 LP Gibson (9-6)
COL 10-16-0 WP Peterson (8-6)
Game #3: Explorers overcome a 4 run 2nd by Selkirk to pull off the come from behind win, 5-4. 3 runs in the 4th close out the scoring and the 5 innings are all goose eggs. Profar a 2 run single in the 2nd and a 3 run D.J. LeMahieu homer (9) in the 4th are the biggest blows.
SEL 4-7-2 LP Dylan Cease (18-8)
COL 5-8-1 WP Clarke Schmidt (6-3) S Felix Bautista (11)
BUT – we lose Charlie Blackmon for 6 days when he’s hit on the wrist.
Game #4: Teams match runs in the first, solo homer (9) by Carlson for Selkirk and rbi single from Chirinos. SF from Chirinos in the 5th puts Columbus up 2-1, but Aroldis Garcia (27) homers in the 6th to tie it up. Then blanks are fired by both teams until the bottom of the 14th when Chirinos gets the walk-off single for his 3rd rbi (Oswald Pereza scores all 3 runs) and the Explorers win to go up 3-1 in the series.
SEL 2-9-1 LP Ramirez (1-2) 14 innings
COL 3-9-2 WP Cishek (3-2)
Game #5: Selkirk and Max Fried say “hold your horses” – we’re the better team. And Fried proves it with a 4 hitter for 6.2 (for win #20!) and bullpen that finishes it off with no more Columbus hits. Alonso, Garcia and Semien each drive in runs for the 3-0 shutout win. Urquidy was good in his Columbus debut, but the offense got stymied big time.
SEL 3-8-0 WP Fried (20-3) S Raisel Iglesias (26)
COL 0-4-0 LP Urquidy (12-9)
Game #6: Still a chance to take the series but it doesn’t look good as Quantrill rebounds from game 1 to go 7 innings, 2 hits, 6 ks and no runs. But Josh Winder is coming back strong too – but solo shots to Pete Alonso (31) and Matt Thaiss (#1 of the year) in the 6th and 7th put a big damper on the Explorers hopes. However, in the 9th Daulton Varsho connects (21) but it was only a solo shot of Liam Hendriks (former Explorer) and Hendriks gets the save done.
SEL 2-8-0 WP Quantrill (16-9) S Hendriks (8)
COL 1-3-0 LP Winder (11-5)
Summary: Series split 3-3, which against Selkirk is not bad!! Now we fill up the dugout for September and head out the road for the next two weeks!

Game #5: Final BAL 6 PRA 1. W Contreras 4-3 L Kikuchi 4-19. Baltimore gets 4 solo shots off Kikuchi, 3 of which happened in the 6th as he was rolling with 12 k’s. Game #6: Final BAL 13 PRA 5. W Quintana 11-8 L Cessa 3-7. Another game where an error opened it up for Baltimore to win.
