Game #1: The Bandicoots cranked out 16 hits – three of them homers (Duvall, Diaz, Friedl) as compared to the Capitals 10 hits and one homer (Yepez) in a surprise 9-5 Bethesda win.
Game #2: The Capitals score 3 in the 8th on a Taylor long ball, but it was not enough as the Bandicoots hung on for a 5-3 win. Pasquantino and Lindor each had three hits for Sacramento.
Game #3: Sacramento wins a slugfest 14-11 that only saw three balls leave the park even though the teams combined for 33 hits in the game. Chris Flexen did not survive the 2nd inning for Bethesda (7 runs on 8 hits in 1.2 innings plus a walk) and Johnny Cueto didn’t make it through the 3rd (9 runs on 10 hits in 2.2 IP). Blechhh. Game #7: No love lost between these two teams as the head hunting continued with each team losing a place for a week after a beaning (Garrett Coooper for the Capitals and Andrew Vaughn for Bethesda), but it was Jeff McNeil who stood out with three hits including two doubles and drove in three for Bethesda.
Summary: One of those series where we finished checking to see whether we had the right uniforms on. Sacramento takes it easy on Bethesda as the Bandicoots managed to steal 5 of 7 from the Capitals.

Yonge Street  Stalkers @ Fremont  Cannons

Preview: Yonge Street is trying to keep pace with Chicago in the AL Central while host Fremont is tied with Cincinnati for the AL East. All games would be decided by 3 runs or fewer.
Game #1: Yonge St scores first in the series in the second inning with a HBP from Sandy Alcantara, a sac bunt, then a Joshua Lowe double. Gerrit Cole keeps the Cannons off the board until the fifth, when a Justin Turner error puts a runner aboard for Elias Diaz’s two-run homer. Joshua Lowe singles and steals in the seventh with one out, but the Stalkers can’t bring him home.

Alcantara walks the leadoff batter in the eighth, but Giovanny Gallegos sets the side down thereafter. With one out in the top of the ninth, Fremont turns to Anthony Bender. A diving catch by Teoscar Hernandez robs Jorge Soler of a double, and Joshua Lowe flies out to deep center to end it as 2-1 Fremont victory. Both sides mustered only 4 hits and committed 2 errors. Cole finished with 10 strikeouts in 7 innings in the loss.

W: Sandy Alcantara (10-5)
L: Gerrit Cole (8-6)
S: Anthony Bender (2)

HR: YSS- none; FRE- Elias Diaz (3)

Game #2: Byron Buxton leads off the second inning with a double, but YSS starter Taijuan Walker leaves him stranded. Yonge St starts the scoring in the top of the third as Joshua Lowe continues his hot hitting. After a walk to Adley Rutchsman, Ha Seong Kim doubles them home off of Austin Voith for the 2-0 lead. Fremont answers in the bottom of the inning with the aid of Jeremy Pena error putting a runner on. With two outs, Carlos Correa powers one over the wall to tie it at 2-2.

Mike Yastrzemski leads off the fifth with a double, but Fremont can’t score him. Yonge St gets runners on 2nd in the sixth and seventh innings via the SB, but also fail to score. Nolan Gorman doubles in the seventh, then pinch-hitter Manuel Margot is able to single him in to give Fremont the 3-2 lead. Robert Suarez is brought n in the ninth to close it out. He allows a walk to Trevor Larnach, but that would be all as Fremont has another 1-run victory, 3-2. Yonge Street is on a 4-game homer drought. Fremont starter Austin Voth racks up 8 K’s in 5 innings of a no-decision.

W: Matt Festa (3-0)
L: Taijuan Walker (5-6)
S: Robert Suarez (5)

HR: YSS- none; FRE- Carlos Correa (8)

Game #3: Yonge St gets started right away with three straight hits and two runs, with the help of an Austin Hays throwing error. Fremont starter Garrett Whitlock takes his frustration out on Travis d’Arnaud, plunking him in the elbow and knocking him out for 23 days. Joc Pederson adds to the Stalkers lead with a solo shot in the third inning. Fremont gets one back in the bottom of the inning when Joshua Rojas singles off of Domingo German, steals second, and is singled home by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Fremont gets runners on 1st and 3rd in the fourth but can’t get it done.

Fremont gets another back in the fifth inning with a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. solo homerun. Joshua Rojas then ties it up 3-3 in the seventh with his own round tripper. Yonge St suffers another injury in the eighth, as a HBP knocks Joc Pederson out for 5 days. Neither team threatens again in regulation, so we go to extra innings.

Kyle Higashioka doubled to lead off the bottom of the tenth, but Emmanuel Clase is able to shut down the next three Cannons. An error and single put two on for the Stalkers in the eleventh, but neither scores. Fremont also gets two on in the bottom of the inning but fail to bring in the winner. Both sides go 1-2-3 in the twelfth. YSS’s thirteenth is uneventful. Shohei Ohtani leads off the thirteenth and is tossed after (presumably) swearing at the ump. Teoscar Hernandez singles and advances to second, but Jose Alvarado strikes out Nolan Gorman to end the threat.

Joshua Lowe draws a leadoff walk in the fourteenth, then comes home alongside Kris Bryant thanks to Bryant’s two-run homer. Trea Turner adds an insurance homerun as YSS goes up 6-3. Jose Alvarado then sets down the Cannons in order as Yonge St wins 6-3 in 14 innings. Matt Vierling had a rough day at the plate, going 0-6. Whitlock picked up 10 strikeouts in 7.1 IP in the no-decision. After d’Arnaud’s departure, the Cannons tested Austin Nola’s arm but only came up 2-4 on steals.

W: Jose Alvarado (3-1)
L: Anthony Bender (1-0)

HR: YSS- Trea Turner (16), Joc Pederson (12), Kris Bryant (4); FRE- Joshua Rojas (4), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (16)

Game #4: Fremont scores first, with a solo homerun from Byron Buxton off of Adrian Houser giving them the 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Carlos Correa strikes out and repeats a Japanese phrase he heard Ohtani use the previous game, then gets tossed. YSS gets two on in the top of the fourth off of Sandy Alcantara but do not score. FRE does the same in the bottom of the frame. YSS gets two on again in the top of the fifth and go to the early pinch-hitter in Joey Meneses, but are again stymied. Fremont also gets two on in the fifth, but this time Teoscar Hernandez’s single brings in a run to make it 2-0 Fremont.

A sac bunt in the sixth advances runners to 2nd and 3rd for Fremont. A grounder is enough to score pinch-runner Austin Hays on a play at the plate to make it 3-0. A sac fly from Javier Baez then scores another. Shohei Ohtani is plunked and injured, but fortunately only for the day, allowing him to pitch game 6 still. Yonge St finally gets on the board thanks to a Matt Vierling sac fly. They claw another back with a Joey Meneses homer in the eighth to make it 4-2. Alcantara is left in to close it out, but gives up a leadoff walk to Adley Rutschman in the ninth. Alcantara bears down to get the next three outs and pick up the complete game win in the 4-2 Fremont victory. Fremont left 10 on base but managed to score enough.

W: Sandy Alcantara (11-5)
L: Adrian Houser (2-7)

HR: YSS- Joey Meneses (6); FRE- Byron Buxton (10)

Game #5: Yonge St. gets going early against Carlos Rodon with run-scoring singles in the 1st from Trea Turner and Jeremy Pena to make it 2-0. Fremont gets one back in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. against Brady Singer. Singer loads the bases in the 3rd, but only one comes in to score. In the 4th, Jeremy Pena doubles in Trea Turner, then scores from a Matt Vierling sacrifice fly to give YSS the 4-2 lead.

Fremont gets numerous chances but fail to close the gap. Caleb Ferguson comes on to go 1-2-3 in the ninth for the save in the 4-2 Yonge St. victory. Fremont leaves 10 on base in the loss. Turner and Pena go a combined 4-8 with 3 R and 3 RBI.

W: Brady Singer (9-3)
L: Carlos Rodon (9-6)
S: Caleb Ferguson (2)

HR: YSS- none; FRE- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (17)

Game #6: Both Gerrit Cole and Shohei Ohtani keep it scoreless until the third, when Joshua Rojas’s two-run homer gives Fremont the early lead. Trevor Larnach hits a solo homerun in the fifth to cut it to 2-1. Fremont adds to their lead in the sixth with a two-run triple from Teoscar Hernandez to go up 4-1. In the seventh, Trea Turner and Adley Rutschman hit back-to-back homers to cut the lead to 4-3.

Fremont gets a leadoff walk in the eighth but Emmanuel Clase shuts it down after that. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Rutschman sends one way deep, but it curves foul. Giovanny Gallegos then strikes him out to take the game 4-2 in Fremont’s favor. Ohtani strikes out 9 in 8.1 IP in the win.

W: Shohei Ohtani (7-1)
L: Gerrit Cole (8-7)
S: Giovanny Gallegos (13)

HR: YSS- Trea Turner (17), Adley Rutschman (5). Trevor Larnach (1); FRE- Joshua Rojas (5)

Summary: Fremont takes the series 4-2 from Yonge St. in a series of close, low-scoring games. The teams will face off next week north of the border, but d’Arnaud will miss all of that series. Meneses came on as a pinch-hitter with RISP in each of the first 4 games and failed to drive any in (though he hit a homer in his second AB in one of the games), then went 0-3 in the game he started.
