SERIES PREVIEW – One a solid contender, one a year away but here today, maybe gone tomorrow.

GAME #1 – Corbin Burnes 15-6 (1.60) vs. Charlie Morton 20-5 (2.49)

Ketel Marte leads off the bottom of the 1st tagging a Corbin Burnes fastball for a homerun to give Hollywood a 1-0 lead. Hollywood makes it 4-0 in the bottom of the 2nd after J.P. Crawford reaches on an error, moves to third on a Christian Vazquez perfectly executed hit-an-run and Christian Yelich hammers a 3-run dinger. J.D. Davis gets SW Detroit on the board with a homer in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-1. Paul Goldschmidt extends the lead to 6-1 on the third Hollywood homer of the day, driving in Ben Gamel, who was pinch running for Nick Castellanos. That’s all Hollywood needed as they go on to win 6-1 to take a 2-0 series lead (when you include the ghost win)

HOL 6 – SWD 1
Win: Charlie Morton 1-0 (0.00)
Loss: Corbin Burnes 0-1 (5.40)

GAME #2 – Jordan Montgomery 10-6 (3.48) vs. Drew Rasmussen 4-6 (3.99)

Ketel Marte leads off with a hit, steals second, makes it to third on a fielders choice and scores on another fielders choice (Jake Cronenworth) to give Hollywood another early 1-0 lead. SW Detroit immediately ties the game 1-1 after Harrison Bader singles, steals second and scores on a Dominic Smith single. It stays that way until the bottom of the 4th when Castellanos singles and scores on Goldschmidt’s 2nd homerun of the series giving Hollywood a 3-1 lead. Hollywood’s lead extends to 4-1 on a Vazquez RBI single, Goldschmidt scoring. Hollywood holds on to win 4-1 taking a 2-0 series lead.

HOL 4 – SWD 1
Win: Dennis Rasmussen 1-0 (1.50)
Loss: Jordan Montgomery 0-1 (5.40)

GAME #3 – Clayton Kershaw 14-1 (2.75) vs. Ranger Suarez 14-3 (1.94)

Ketel Marte once again leads the game off with a hit, this time a double. He comes around on a Castellanos triple, which injured SW Detroit Dominic Smith for 1-day. Hollywood leads 1-0. Brandon Lowe ties the game in the bottom of the 1st when he tags Kershaw for a homer. Ryan McMahon gives SW Detroit the first lead of the series when he homers off Kershaw in the 2nd for a 2-1 lead. Brandon Lowe doubles off Kershaw in the 3rd, driving in Zach McKinstry for a 3-1 lead. Goldschmidt cuts the SW Detroit lead to 3-2 with an RBI single in the 6th. Kyle Farmer ties the game at 3 driving in Castellanos with 2-outs in the 6th. Willson Contreras gets SW Detroit the lead back with an RBI single making it 4-3. SW Detroit holds on to win the game and cut the series lead to 3 games to 1.

SWD 4 – HOL 3
Win: Miguel Castro 1-0 (0.00)
Loss: Dustin May 0-1 (2.25)

GAME #4 – Shane McClanahan 14-4 (2.88) vs. Jon Gray 8-16 (5.12)

This time it’s not Marte that scores the first run of the game, it’s Cronenworth who scores on a Castellanos RBI single giving Hollywood a 1-0 lead. Bader ties up the game with a homer off McClanahan in the 2nd inning. SW Detroit grabs the 2-1 lead when Lowe drives in Willson Contreras for the 2-1 lead. Brendon Rodgers follows with a single making it 3-1. Bader makes it 4-1 on a fielders choice, the biggest SW Detroit lead of the series. Davis extends the lead to 5-1 with a single of his own. Hollywood cuts the lead to 5-2 after Vazquez doubles home Crawford in the 5th. Goldschmidt cuts the lead to 5-3 after back-to-back doubles with Castellanos. Crawford drives home Goldschmidt on a SF, cutting the lead to 5-4 SW Detroit. A questionable MM move as he brings in SP Jordan Montgomery to get out of the 6th, then follows with Corbin Burnes in the 7th….  Hollywood ties the game after Miguel Andujar simply drops the fly ball that would have gotten them out of the inning. After Matt Olson doubles, he is pulled for Ben Gamel who scores on a Vazquez double, giving Hollywood a 6-5 lead. SW Detroit TIES THE GAME with a Davis homer off Diego Castillo in the 9th! SW Detroit pulls off the win on a SF by Bader in the bottom of the 10th to win 7-6!  Series is now 2 games to 2.

SWD 7 – HOL 6 (10 Innings)
Win: Ian Kennedy 1-0 (0.00)
Loss: Diego Castillo 0-1 (6.75)

GAME #5 – Charlie Morton 20-5 (2.49) vs. Reynaldo Lopez 6-1 (2.19)

For the first time in the series, Hollywood doesn’t score first, as in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Bader scores on a SF by McKinstry, giving SW Detroit a 1-0 lead. Cronenworth doubles home Olson all the way from first base in the 3rd to tie the game at 1. The pitching duel stays into effect into the 7th when JD Davis doubles home Dansby Swanson making it 2-1 SW Detroit. Matt Olson immediately ties it with a homer in the 8th. Then 2 batters later, Castellanos gives Hollywood the 3-2 lead with a homer. Hollywood’s bullpen holds on this time and gets the win 3-2.

HOL 3 – SWD 2
Win: Charlie Morton 2-0 (1.38)
Loss: Paul Sewald 0-1 (6.00)

SERIES SUMMARY – Hollywood wins the series 3 games to 2 & is the first Mid-West Baseball League Team to advance using the Ghost Win for Division Winners.  J.D. Davis starred for SW Detroit while Nick Castellanos starred for Hollywood. Hollywood wins the series 4 games to 2 behind strong performances by Charlie Morton and the homerun.
