Fremont  Cannons @ Detroit  Crime

Series Preview: Two playoff-bound teams meet up. Detroit’s pitching staff is wheezing to the end. Fremont brings a lefty-heavy pitching staff to face the Detroit hitters.
Game #1: The Crime jump over Tarik Skubal, knocking him out after just 2.2 IP. Mike Minor isn’t great is good enough as Fremont can’t get the clutch hit. Detroit wins 8-5.

L: Tarik Skubal (13-7)
S: Aaron Loup (24)

HR: FRE- Javier Baez (24), Jason Castro (5); DET- Bryce Harper (28), Martin Maldonado (16)

Game #2: Ryan Weathers limits the Cannons to one run in seven innings. Aaron Loup comes on in the ninth with a 3-1 lead for his 3rd save attempt in 4 days, and tires quickly. Fremont bats around in the inning, scoring six, and wins it 7-3. Shohei Ohtani strikes out 10 in a no-decision for his final start of the regular season.

W: T.J. McFarland (1-3)

HR: FRE- none; DET- Brett Gardner (8)

Game #3: Fremont gets on Carlos Carrasco with 6 runs in the second from homers by Javier Baez, Shohei Ohtani, and Yulieski Gurriel. With Walker Buehler toeing the rubber for the Cannons, this should have been a lock. Instead, a Bryce Harper 3-run HR and a Brandon Belt 2-run HR make it 6-5 Fremont in the fifth.

Giovanny Gallegos gets two outs in the seventh, then gives up back-to-back homers to Brett Phillips and Patrick Wisdom to give Detroit a 7-6 lead. In the eighth, an Austin Hays error gets runners on second and third for Detroit, so the Cannons call on Brad Wieck, who started the season well but has struggled as of late. The struggles continue, and Detroit scores 4 in the inning to take an 11-6 lead.

With Aaron Loup out, Trevor May gets the call in the ninth. Fremont draws on that ninth inning magic from the previous game and scores two to make it 11-8. Yulieski Gurriel comes up with the bases loaded, and knocks one into the corner to bring home three and tie it 11-11. Gurriel is out trying to stretch it to a triple, but the next batter, Teoscar Hernandez, clubs a solo HR to take the 12-11 lead and collects his 100th RBI of the season. Drew Pomeranz comes on for Fremont and finishes off the Crime 1-2-3 for the 12-11 win.

W: Genesis Cabrera (5-3)
L: Kyle Cody (0-2), BS (1)
S: Drew Pomeranz (15)

Game #4: Carlos Rodon has been Fremont’s best pitcher, and acts like it in this one, giving up just a Luke Voit HR and striking out 8 in seven innings. Aaron Nola pitches well for Detroit but it’s not enough as the Cannons win 5-1. Mike Yastrzemski is HBP and knocked out for 10 days.

W: Carlos Rodon (17-1)
L: Aaron Nola (15-13)

HR: FRE- none; DET- Luke Voit (6)

Game #5: The Cannons romp over Daniel Castano and the Crime to the tune of 11-1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homers twice, including a grand slam. Sandy Alcantara and Garrett Whitlock limit Detroit to just 3 hits.

W: Sandy Alcantara (16-4)
L: Daniel Castano (0-3)

HR: FRE- Vladimir Guererro Jr. 2 (40)’ DET- Cesar Hernandez (12)

Game #6: Fremont pounds out 17 runs on 26 hits to take the finale 17-1. Manuel Margot homers twice for the victors.

W: Drew Pomeranz (1-2)
L: Mike Minor (11-14)

HR: FRE- Teoscar Hernandez (30), Jason Castro (6), Manuel Margot 2 (8); DET- Manny Machado (31)

Series Summary: Fremont takes the series 5-1 and has almost assuredly clinched the top record in MWBL, with a series against Motor City next. Detroit hosts Chicago in what could be a first-round playoff rematch to close out the season.

K.Bryant hit HR #26 and Soler #27. The speedy M.Zunino had 3 hits and 3 RBI. He also had his 5th triple of the season (a speedy catcher?).
