Jersey Nor’easters @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview: Columbus looking to lock up the 1st Wildcard slot enters with a magic # or 3. So this series and the Selkirk-Triple Creek games are the biggies for Explorers fans this week.
Game #1: Mike Fiers decided he wanted a big part in things and he goes 6 innings, 5 hits and no earned runs. An Asdrubal Cabrera error in the 6th allows Didi Gregorius to reach and he scores on a Tyler Naquin SF. Columbus brings in the bullpen – Fiers has to make 1 more start – and they shut down Jersey. Trevor Story (20) and Enrique Hernandez (8) go over the wall for Columbus.
JNE 1- 6-0 LP Vincent Velasquez (3-4)
COL 8-14-1 WP Fiers (3-3)
Game #2: Jordan Lyles picks up where Mike Fiers left off – at least for 5 innings. But in the 6th he gives up a 2 run homer to Kole Calhoun (21). That tied the game as Columbus plated single runs in the 2nd and 3rd. In the bottom of the 6th, Columbus takes advantage of a Calhoun error to score the go ahead run and the Explorers bullpen was able to again shut down the Nor’Easters.
JNE 2-7-1 LP Jacob Junis (1-2)
COL 3-7-1 WP Yusmeiro Petit (1-0) S Liam Hendriks (20)
AND with this win and Selkirk road losses, the Explorers clinch Wildcard 1 spot!!
Game #3: Well Columbus did some celebrating after the last game, but it didn’t seem to affect things to start this game. 3 runs in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd AND 3rd and big 7-0 lead after 3. The 1st inning was punctuated by a “RARE” 3 run triple from Tyler Flowers!!!

But then in the 4th Renato Nunez slugs a 2 run homer (14). 2 more runs score in the 5th as Josh Tomlin gives up another homer – Matt Davidson (4) and Jersey gets a 2nd run in the 4th and now the score is 7-4 Columbus. Move to the 8th and two more Jersey runs score including an Austin Romine solo homer (5). Yikes, 7-6 going into the 9th and Liam Hendriks is called on again – and he delivers!
JNE 6-10-0 LP Matt Boyd (2-3)
COL 7-10-0 WP Brandon Kintzler (6-2) S Hendriks (21)

Series Summary: So Columbus got it done – clinched and actually swept and got some players some rest. It’s been a very surprising season with limited starters of quality – but a pen that kept them together. The offense has been really good most of the time. 2 more games to go and then the post season where anything can happen.

Lucchesi gave up 5 runs (3ER) as well, but the SWD pen was leaky. E. Rios tried to win it himself, but his 2 HR and 4 RBI weren’t enough. The pesky Stalkers went with the 10 single, two double attack and the pen was air tight. YSS 7 – SWD 5
