Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview:  A rivalry that has been building up in recent years as the Bandicoots make there way along I-70, 68, 79, and back to 70 to Columbus for seven exciting games ….
Game #1:  Pretty much the Jake Arrieta show as he tosses a 3 hitter through 7 (0 ER). David Peralta jacks a 3 run shot (8). He was joined in the homer department by Lorenzo Cain (7), Anthony Rendon (8) and Robinson Chirinos (9). All Jake needed in the 8-2 Bethesda win. Arrieta moves to 7-4 with the wi. Matt Shoemaker (1-2) gets the loss.
Game #2:  A Paul DeJong solo homer (11) and an Ian Desmond 2 run single in the 4th was enough for J.A. Happ (W: 6-4) to get the win. He goes 7 giving up 6 hits, one of them a solo homer (2) to Adam Rosales. Erasmo Ramirez suffers the loss (4-3)
Game #3:  In the first of two back to back 4-3 games, the Bandicoots pull this out and spoil Josh Tomlin’s bid to be a 10 game winner. Brad Miller drives in 2 in the 2nd, but Columbus comes back to take the lead in the 3rd after a botched fielding play on a Tomlin sac attempt leads to one run and then Eduardo Nunez crunches a 2 run homer (8) to give the Explores the 3-2 lead. In the 6th, Schindel ponders the pitching switch but leave Tomlin in to face Robinson Chirinos and whoops, shouldn’t have done it. He homers (10) – 2 run shot and Coots are up 4-3. Brandon Morrow and Tyler Lyons (S – 2) keep it that way as Bethesda takes the game 4-3.
Game #4:  The 2nd 4-3 game goes to Columbus and they get all 4 runs in the 4th as Matt Carpenter doubles in two and then Charlie Blackmon follows win a 2 run homer (15). That made it 4-2 Columbus. Lorenzo Cain gets 3 hits including a solo homer (2) in the 4th to make it 4-3, but then Tony Watson, Wade LeBlanc and David Robertson, 2 inning save (14) keep it that way. Lance McCullers gets the win (6-0), Tyson Ross takes the loss (1-1).
Game #5:  A very rare event occurred in this game, a Columbus pitcher tossed a complete game. But it was a very good one – Ervin Santana (W 8-2) gives up 3 hits, fans 10 and tosses a shutout. However, before you think it was an easy win, Hyun-Jin Ryu (L 4-2) did not make it so. He pitches 7 strong innings and if it weren’t for a Jesus Sucre single in the 3rd, followed by a SAC from Santana and an rbi single from Ben Revere, the game might still be going on. The 3rd inning run by the Explorers was it in the 1-0 Columbus win.
Game #6:  Columbus has it fairly easy in this one after Charlie Blackmon hits a 3 run homer (16) in the 1st. Brad Miller drives in 1 in the 2nd, Columbus matches it with Russell Martin homer (4) and then the get 4 more in the 7th. Miller drives in another in the 9th, but it was for stat purposes only. Final 8-2 Explorers. WP Shoemaker (2-2), LP Arrieta (7-5).
Game #7:  Another 1 run nail-biter. Anthony Rendon homers (9) in the 1st. Columbus then plates 4 in the 3rd, 2 on a Matt Carpenter double. Coots chip away with single runs in the 4th and 5th. Columbus gets 1 back in the 6th and then call on David Robertson for another 2 inning save. He gives up an rbi single to his first batter but then sets down the next 6 to preseve the win and get his 15th save. Final 5-4 Columbus. J.A. Happ gets the win (7-4) for his 5+ inning effort. Erasmo Ramirez suffers the tough loss (4-4).
Series Summary:  After swapping wins in the first 4 games, the Explorers settle in and take the final 4 for 5-2 series win. Coots look to stay on-top in the NL East, they have a strong team. Explorers playing well (when the offense rolls) but they still have a distant view looking up at Tempe. Next week Bethesda takes a short easterly jaunt from Columbu down I-70 to I-79 N to Pittsburgh. Explorers will board.
