Long Beach Dirt Bags @ Bethesda Bandicoots | |
---|---|
Series Preview: |
The 1st place Dirt Bags visit the Bandicoots in Bethesda for an Atlantic-Pacific match-up with Long Beach ending their 13-game road swing.
|
Game #1: | A little too much like the seal harvest in Newfoundland with the Dirt Bags getting clubbed badly 11-0. Long Beach starter Jeremy Hellickson and Junichi Tazawa starred as the seal pups in this one with Hellickson giving up six runs on four hits and two walks in two innings while Zowie gave up four runs on five hits in a nightmare 8th inning. Jake Arrieta gave up a couple of hits in the start for Bethesda with both of them going to Denard Span (one of my favorite ball players btw) and both of them being doubles in the right-centerfield gap. Arrieta walked one and fanned 7 to get his first win of the season. Adrian Gonzalez was 3/4 with a double and a couple of runs and a couple of RBIs for Bethesda. Brad Miller continued his insane assault of MWBL pitching with his 5th homer of the year (a three-run blast in the 1st inning) and added a single. Almedys Diaz hit a solo shot in the 2nd for his 3rd of the season. |
Game #2: | Tyler Anderson pitched a magnificent game for Long Beach … except for one pitch which Brad Miller clobbered high over the right field fence in the bottom of the 8th inning as the Dirt Bags fell 3-2. Oh the drama. Anderson cruised through the game except for the 8th inning, going the distance and allowing just seven hits and two walks while striking out 8. The Dirt Bags entered the 8th up 2-0 after scoring two in the 7th off Bethesda starter John Lackey (just off the banana boat from Dallas) on a solo homer by Adam Lind (1) and an RBI single by Mr. Denard Span. Anderson fell to 1-1 with the hardluck loss while Lackey improved to 1-0. Bethesda whipping boy Steve Cishek celebrated the departure of closer competitor Edwin Diaz (shipped to Dallas in a crate of July 4 commemorative prophylactics) by fanning two in a three-up, three-down 9th for his 3rd save of the season. Miller’s homer was his 6th and 2nd in two games and his three RBIs gave him 17 on the young season (8 games!!!). |
Game #3: | Yordano Ventura lasted just 10 outs and reliever Michael Tonkin was treated like a rented mule as the Bandicoots trampled the Dirt Bags 11-2. Ventura gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and walked two over 3-1/3 erratic innings and his replacement, Tonkin, was all or nothing with six of his eight registered outs via strikeout mixed in with three walks and two hits including a grand slam in the 6th by Anthony Rendon. It was Rendon’s 3rd of the season. Brad Miller, Carlos Asuaje and Adrian Gonzalez each had a couple of hits with Gonzalez going yard on Long Beach reliever Alex Claudio in the 8th to cap his 4-RBI performance. Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Pillar provided most of the Long Beach offense each getting two hits and scoring a run. Trevor Plouffe and Ryan Raburn posted the RBIs for Long Beach. Rich Hill (2-0) gave up three hits in six innings with Erasmo Ramirez extended relief outing of three innings landing him with his 1st save of the season. |
Game #4: | Doug Fister gave up solo homers to Luis Valbuena and Rene Rivera, but the rest of the game was all Bethesda as they snagged their fourth straight win over Long Beach 6-2. Derek Norris and Trevor Story each drove in a couple of runs on a couple of hits including a homer. The homer was Norris’s 1st of the season and Story’s 2nd. Aledmys Diaz has a couple of hits for Bethesda. Mike Fiers (1-1) took the loss for the D-Bags after giving up four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. He fanned six without walking a runner. Doug Fister’s 3rd start of the season finally got him a decision as he moved to 1-0 going six innings with five hits. The Bethesda bullpen tossed three perfect innings to close out the game. |
Game #5: | A seesaw game that saw Long Beach’s 5-4 lead crumble thanks to two hanging curves by Michael Feliz in the 7th with Trevor Story and David Peralta golfing the reliever’s offerings into the cheap seats to give Bethesda a 6-5 scrape-by win. Luis Valbuena got the D-Bags on the board early with a 1st inning two-out homer off Betehsda starter and pre-season acquisition Miguel Gonzalez. Brad Miller got revenge in the bottom of the same inning smacking Long Beach starter Danny Salazar’s fastball into the stands with a couple of runners about (I think his 4th three-run homer already this season). It was Miller’s 7th homer of the season, third this series and his 20th RBI. Go figure. Long Beach fought back with a run in the 3rd (Denard Span triple, Valbuena RBI single) and two in the 5th (two RBI single by Adam Lind who had three hits in the game) and then closing things out with what was the go-ahead run on a JJ Hardy RBI single off Chris Withrow in the 6th.Gonzalez’s first start for Bethesda was less than stellar … ok, it was downright shitty … as he lasted 4.2 innings but gave up four runs on nine hits. Jumbo Diaz (1-1) got the win with 1-1/3 of scoreless relief and Steve Cishek even came through with a scoreless 9th for his 4th save of the season. Anthony Rendon was plunked in the melon by Salazar (thank you very much) and was knocked out for three games. |
Game #6: | A rematch of the Hellickson-Arrieta opener with Hellickson pitching much better but so did Arrieta as the Cubs righty tossed a no-hitter with only a walk to Denard Span spoiling the perfect game in a 1-0 Bethesda win. Arrieta (2-0) fanned five in the game and lowered his ERA to 2.12 with 15 consecutive shutout innings in the series. Hyun Soo Kim’s single in the 3rd drove in Jon Jay for the only scoring of the game. Hellickson (1-2) allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out 10 in the contest. |
Game #7: | JJ Hardy’s spastic 9th inning throw to first base that wound up in right field spoiled a nice night by Long Beach allowing Adrian Gonzalez to stomp home for a lumber-off 4-3 win and a series sweep for Bethesda. Bethesda got off to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st thanks to Aledmys Diaz’s 4th homer of the season but Yordano Ventura and company held the Bandicoots in check until the sloppy fielding fiasco of the 9th inning. The Dirt Bags got a run back in the 2nd on a solo homer by Trevor Plouffe (3) and using some good old fashioned fundamental baseball clawed back to tie it 3-3 with single runs in the 3rd and 6th on sacrifice flies by Plouffe and Kevin Pillar. Ventura helped himself out with a couple of hits including a double and even scored a run in the game. Adrian Gonzalez and Lorenzo Cain each had a pair of hits for Bethesda.Alex Claudio (0-1) got tagged with the loss thanks to Hardy’s fumble while Ryan Madson (1-0) was credited with the win after 1-2/3 innings of shutout ball. |
Series Summary: |
Brad Miller continues to run riot and Jake Arrieta tosses 15 innings of shutout baseball including a no-hitter in a sweep by Bethesda over Long Beach that included a couple of come-from-behind wins.
|
Hollywood Werewolves @ Virginia Sluggers | |
---|---|
Series Preview: |
Opening Day at Virginia and they get to face the toughest team in the West,…and Virginia is on a rebuild trip.
|
Game #1: | VIR 5-4 Miggy and Cargo start Hollywood off on the right foot with 2-out back-to-back homers in the 1st for a 2-0 lead and D.Price is smiling in the dugout. Price sets Virginia down for the first 3 innings but gives up a J.Bradley solo shot in the 4th to make the game a 2-1 contest. In the meantime, C.Archer is finding his groove and throwing goose eggs at Hollywood for 5 innings. In the 6th Virginia’s J.Bradley rips a 2-run triple and scores on a Markakis SF to give the Gents a 4-2 lead. The smile is gone from Price’s face. But Hollywood is not done yet. In the 7th, W.Castillo steps to the plate and launches an Archer fastball deep over the wall for a 2-run homer and a 4-4 tie. Virginia comes up empty in the 7th and Hollywood in the top of the 8th. But the man who is having a day to remember isn’t done either. J.Bradley continues his hot hitting day by crushing another Price offering into the bleachers to give Virginia a 5-4 lead. Trevor Cahill came in to get the last 3 batters of the game for his first save and Virginia ended up with a stunner against the mighty Werewolves on opening day. W-Gearrin (1-0) L-Price (0-1) Sv-Cahill (1) |
Game #2: |
HOL 15-7 Hollywood got their revenge for the opening loss. 19 hits and 15 runs. Cargo went wild with a 4-5 day scoring 3 times and driving in 8 runs. He collected a triple and 2 homers among the 4 hits. |
Game #3: |
VIR 4-2 Goldschmidt and Miggy gave HOL 2 runs in the 3rd. Springer’s 2-run double in the bottom of the 3rd tied it. When Miggy misplayed Rizzo’s groundball for an error in the 5th, Springer scored and put Virginia up 3-2. Rizzo capped the scoring with a longball in the 8th and Cahill once again got the save. |
Game #4: |
HOL 11-2 Kershaw was the Hollywood starter, Do I need anything else??? Oh,…Miggy launched 3 home runs and had 7 RBI. |
Game #5: |
HOL 7-2 Maeda tosses a 3-hitter over 8 innings. Yelich and Kinsler go yard for the Werewolves. Hollywood garners 11 hits to Virginia’s 4. |
Game #6: |
HOL 3-1 Probably closer than it should have been. Miggy sent another ball over the wall (#7) and Cargo got his 19th RBI. C.Santana did get his 1st homer of the year for VIR, but this time D.Price was on his |
Game #7: |
HOL 3-1 J.Dyson knocked in a run for HOL in the 4th and Santana tied it in the bottom of the 4th with a solo shot. The pitchers took over from there. Conley was stingy allowing 3 hits and Archer scattered 8 hits over 8 innings. BUT that guy Miggy did it again. In the 8th he blasted a 2-run homer (# 8 on the year) and gave Hollywood a lead they would not lose. |
Series Summary: |
Hollywood crushes Virginia and takes the series 5-2.
Hollywood is on its way to another spot in the playoffs and Virginia is just hoping to get through the year healthy.Player of Series (week) Miguel Cabrera – 10-29 .345 7 runs 14 RBI 6 Home Runs |

Jersey Nor’easters @ Columbus Explorers | |
---|---|
Series Preview: |
Jersey Nor’easters come to Columbus with a pitching rotation that wasn’t updated. Led to some surprising starts – and results.
|
Game #1: |
Montgomery gets the nod over a worn-out Hendricks and gives up 2 hits through 7 innings but they were both in the 1st and the 2nd was a 2 run Desmond HR (3). But his teammates get that back in the 5th including an RBI double that scores Montgomery (he gets 2 hits in the game). So with the score knotted at 2-2 after 9, we head to an extra inning. Game ends in the 10th on a Blackmon rbi single.
JNE 2-5-2 LP Torres (1-1) 10 innings COL 3-7-9 WP Barrett (1-0) |
Game #2: |
Straily vs. LeBlanc is the game two match-up. Columbus gets 3 in the 2nd and a solo Nunez homer (3) in the 5th for a 4-0 lead which LeBlanc and two relievers maintain. 3 Jersey hits were their
offense. JNE 0-3-0 LP Straily (0-1) COL 4-4-0 WP LeBlanc (1-0) |
Game #3: |
Montgomery – slated to pitch, comes in. He’s not “tired” but he is downgraded to a 1. So what does he do? He pitches a no-hitter into the 7th! And he got a run in the 1st on a Murphy rbi double. The 1st two hits off Montgomery come in the 7th, double by Martin and rbi single by Granderson to tie it up. Montgomery finishes the inning and is rewarded for his stellar efforts by a 2 run Bruce HR (2) that ends up being the game winner. Montgomery gives up 2 hits, 1 run and fans 9 – starting the game as
a “1”! JNE 3-7-0 WP Montgomery (1-0) COL 1-2-0 LP Shoemaker (0-1) |
Game #4: |
After a day off (and two days rest) Straily comes back to pitch against Happ. Another low scoring game – teams trade 1 in the 2nd including a Carpenter HR (2). Then the Nor’easters get a 2nd run in
the 3rd on a Kendrick rbi double. The 2-1 lead lasts until the 4th when Desmond (3 hits on the day) and Granderson drive in runs for a 3-2 lead. Happ and a couple keep it that way. Hernandez, Escobar, Santana and Kendrick each get two hits in the game. Bruce gets HBP and will miss 4 days. JNE 2-8-0 LP Straily (0-2) COL 3-7-0 WP Happ (1-1) S Watson (1) |
Game #5: | Velasquez vs. Santana – ANOTHER low scoring game, and another game where Columbus gets 3 hits or less. And we get free baseball again. Velasquez is a wrecking machine on the mound but gets a ND. He goes 6 innings, gives up 1 hit, 2 run, 2 walks and fans 11. He leaves with a 2-1 lead. Murphy drives in one in the 1st, D.Santana homers (1) in the 4th. Shaw comes in to pitch in the 7th and gives up 2 hits and a run and exits with 1 out. Hunter does his job in relief. So does Hand who pitches the 9th and it’s 2-2 after 9. O’Day in for 10th and he gives up a PH sinlge to Pham, who steals 2nd and scores on a Kendrick single. Hand gets the Explorers out in the 10th for the win. JNE 3-7-0 WP Hand (1-0) 10 innings COL 2-3-0 LP O’Day (0-1) |
Game #6: |
Hendricks vs. Tomlin in the finale. Hendricks was doing fine until he gives up back-to-back 3 run homers in the 5th. Huh? Well 7 batters up, a double, ground out, W, 3 run homer (Blackmon [4]),
single, single, 3 run homer (Desmond [4]) and that was basically it. Tomlin goes the distance giving up 4 hits, no walks and 5 ks for the CG shutout. JNE 0-4-1 LP Hendricks (1-2) COL 7-9-1 WP Tomlin (1-1) |
Series Summary: |
Odd series, home team wins 4 of 6 with hardly hitting the ball. 3 1 runs games, a 2 run game, 2 shutouts. Jersey stays on the road traveling to Rosemere, and Columbus is packing their bags for their 1st road trip of the year going to Selkirk.

hit solo homers for Mesa. Max Kepler goes 4-4 for Freemont. |
Game #2: |
Both starter in this one had trouble keeping the ball in the park. Mesa’s Trevor Bauer gave up blasts to Javier Baez, Khris Davis, and Tommy Joseph but he limited the additional scoring and went 7 for his second win of the year. Yovanni Gallardo, however gave up a 6 spot in the 1st and in 3 innings gave up a double, a triple, and 3 homers – Rookie Nomar Mazara’s first career homer, and 2 to Todd Frazier,, who drove in 4. Mesa took this one 8-4.
|

In the 3rd, Kennys Vargas blasted a three run homer for a 5-3 Freemont lead which they stretched to 8-3 in the 5th, 2 runs coming in on a Makail Franco double. In the 6th Jaime Garcia weakened, gave up a run and left the bases loaded in a 8-4 game. Reliever Chris Hatcher promptly gave up a game ying grand slam to Steven Pierce. 8-8!! It stayed that way until the 11th when Scuzur doubled home the game winner off Hector Rondon.
|
Game #6: |
A pitchers duel with the series on the line. Shane Green and rookie Michael Fullmer were tied at 2-2 when they both were relieved after the seventh. Homers accounted for all the runs, a two run shot from Khris Davis vs. solo shots from Nomar Mazara and Brandon Drury. The Cannons won the game and tied the series in the 11th when Correa doubled and came around to score on a Carlos Gomez single.
