ENTER THE THREE HORSEMAN
Steve Cutler (9/29/2019)
After the 2005 season, Hollywood gutted their team and began their rebuild. As they eyed their future, they were determined to start the rebuild with their pitching staff. Before the 2006 season, they made a trade for a young starting pitcher, who would end up being the “elder statesman” in that rotation – Jered Weaver.
Weaver was the lone horse until 2009, when both of Hollywood’s highly touted 2007 drafted left- handed pitchers, David Price & Clayton Kershaw , join the big team. While the 2009 Werewolves finished dead last with only 54 wins, there was a lot to look forward to in Hollywood. The following season, they would finish in 2nd place, going 81-81, before winning 106 games in 2011 (losing the division by 1 game).
The three of them would team up for 9 seasons, pitching in a combined 776 games, with 92 complete games and 34 shutouts. They would compile a combined record of 431-187 with an ERA of 2.66 and 4 Cy Youngs (Kershaw – 3 & Price -1). They would lead the team to 6 consecutive AL West Championships, 3 World Series appearances and 1 World Series Championship.
Jered Weaver retired after the 2017 season with arm troubles. The other 2 continue to power Hollywood’s starting rotation thru 2019. For 3 starting pitchers to pitch at a high level together for nine years in un heard of. Not sure this will ever be matched by a threesome on another MWBL franchise. Hollywood is loyal, to a fault, so I would expect, just like Weaver, the other two Horsemen will ride off into the sunset, playing for 1 franchise. Let’s just hope it’s not for another 5+ seasons before that happens.
