2017 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

Tempe Tempers vs. Hollywood Werewolves

Presented to you by Jarl Jackson – October 2017

Two clubs no strangers to the Fall Classic return to the MWBL World Series in 2017.  This will be Tempe’s 14th appearance and the 5th for Chicago. The Tempers are trying for their 10th title while the Mobsters hope to get their 2nd.

Tempe won 133 games, but failed to beat the all-time MWBL record for team wins which they set in 2012 with 134. In fact, 17 times a MWBL has won over 120 games and this was Tempe’s 8th time and 3rd time to win over 130 games. Chicago has the A.L. record for most wins with 130 in 2015 and this year marked the second time they won over 120 games.

During the 2017 season Tempe won 20 games every month. Their worst month was May when they went 20-5 and best was August when they went 24-5. The N.L. Central race was over by the end of June when they had a 16 game lead over 2nd place Columbus.  For Chicago, they won at least 18 games every month. Their worst month was April and September when they went 18-8 and 19-9. Their best month was June and July when they went 22-5 each time. Chicago couldn’t quite put their closest divisional rival away until the final month as going into September they only had a 6 game lead over Detroit.

2016 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

Tempe Tempers vs. Hollywood WerewolvesAfter toiling 5 years in the American League East never winning more than 62 games Bethesda moved over to the National League DetroitCrime2East in 2015 and discovered winning baseball under the DH-less NL rules. After winning 90 games in their first season the Bandicoots came back and won 96 under the leadership of Nik Malatestinic in 2016.
After a hard fought division series that went the full 7 games against Sacramento Bethesda faced off against MWBL’s best team during the 2016 season. The Columbus Explorers, who went 126-36 during the regular season. Based on how the regular season played out things looked gloom for Bethesda going into the NLCS against Columbus. The Explorers were 70 – 11 at home, 32-10 in one run games, and 19-0 in extra-inning games. However, the Bandicoots weren’t bedazzled by the Explorers regular season accomplishments even though they only won once in 12 tries against Columbus. The Bandicoots of Bethesda – a small neighborhood in the town of Innisfil, Ontario Bethesdasurprised the mighty Columbus Explorers by taking the series 4 game to 1 including three 1 run victories to move on to the World Series.
The 2016 season saw the Detroit Crime win over 100 games for the third time in franchise history in route to a franchise record setting 123 win season. Detroit under the leadership of Sergio Ivone had been to the ALCS twice before losing in 6 games in 2000 and 2004. This season marked their first division title since 2004.
Winning the division definitely helped them get past the tough Chicago Mobsters, who won 119 regular season games themselves and were regulated to wildcard playoff entry due to Detroit’s strong season, as the Crime won 3 of the 4 games played at home during the Division series. In the ALCS Clayton Kershaw held Detroit to two hits while striking out 10 in a complete game 1 victory. Then the Crime won three straight including two in Hollywood before winning the pennant in game 6 at home.   Lots of excitement for the 2016 MWBL World Series as this is the first appearance for both Bethesda and Detroit. It will be the first franchise title– no matter the winner. Here’s how the two teams matchup. Continue reading →

2015 WORLD SERIES

HollywoodTempeTempe Tempers vs. Hollywood Werewolves

Welcome to the 2015 MWBL series which pits the four-time American League Champion & (and defending World Series Champion) Hollywood Werewolves vs the National League Champion (& eight-time World Series) Tempe Tempers.

They are facing each other for the 3rd time in the World Series. Hollywood won the series last year & Tempe won the first match up back in 2005. Tempe has an incredible pen and a very deep bench, but they lack an overall ace. Hollywood on the other hand has two bonafide #1 Aces, a deep pen, but a relatively weak bench.

Hollywood made surprisingly quick work of the Chicago Mobsters in the ALCS and entered the World Series completely rested. Tempe rallied late against the Clovis Wheat Kings in game seven of the NLCS so they needed to expand their pen to eight relievers for the World Series.

This year’s outcome is a tossup according to the Jarl Jackson’s 2015 World Series Preview, so settle in as we bring you the details & highlights. games.

2015 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

Tempe Tempers vs. Hollywood Werewolves

For the second time in MWBL history the same two MWBL teams appear in the World Series in consecutive years and Tempe was part of the first time it happened in 2000 and 2001. They’re probably hoping history repeats itself after they lost to Hollywood last year as they lost the World Series in 2000 then came back to win it in 2001. This is Hollywood’s 4th appearance in the Fall Classic while Tempe is making their 13th appearance. Incredibly they have appeared in 68 percent of all MWBL World Series.

Good luck to Steve Cutler of the Hollywood Werewolves & Chris Tempe of the Tempe Tempers. Continue reading →

2014 WORLD SERIES

Tempe Tempers vs. Hollywood Werewolves

Welcome to the 2014 MWBL series which pits the three-time American League Champion Hollywood Werewolves vs the eight-time (and defending) World Series Champion Tempe Tempers. Hollywood’s last World Series appearance in 2012 saw then swept by the Sacramento Capitals while Tempe took out the Chicago Mobsters in 2013 to return to glory.

HollywoodThis will be a rematch of the famed 2004 World Series in which Tempe Manager Chris Douglass stared Hollywood Manager Steve Cutler right in the eyes with 2-outs in the 9th of game 3, only to say ‘I have you where I want you.’ And that he did. Tempe scored 3-runs off of closer Eric Gagne (all unearned due to a Morgan Ensberg error), with the game winner driven Tempein by Aubrey Huff. The kicker here was that Gagne and Huff were traded for each other, in the off-season, so Huff took out his revenge on the Werewolf front office. Hollywood never recovered and Tempe won the series in 5 games.

Tempe’s dynasty is unmatched and according to the Jarl Jackson World Series Preview Tempe would repeat the same feat, in 5 games. Continue reading →
