(Series played via TeamViewer)

GAME #1 – Stephen Strasburg (19-7 2.59) vs. Jeff Samardzija (18-4 2.96)

Detroit Crime sends out staff ace S.Strasburg to face Southbend’s ace J. Samardzija. Detroit Crime is out of the gate quick in the T1 when Gardner 2bs, 1 out later he steals 3rd and then scores when Altuve throws away Grandal’s grounder. But Grandal is himself nailed as he makes a wide turn at 1st. Detroit Crime A.Jones adds to the lead in the T2 with a solo-HR. Strasburg retires the first 6 Lynx he faces and faces Mayfield to lead off the B3. Mayfield swats a solo-HR to cut the lead to 2-1 Detroit Crime. In the B4 Strasburg gives ups a lead-off 2b to Altuve, who then scores when Crawford throws away Meadows grounder. After Muncy files out to deep RF, Escobar rips a rbi-3b but is nailed at the plate trying to stretch it into an inside-the-park HR. Southbend Lynx is now ahead 3-2. Samardzija has settled in after the 2nd and is keeping Detroit Crime off the board through the 6th. In the B6 Southbend Lynx Forsythe 2bs, but Strasburg bears down and gets Altuve to F8, and Meadows to groundout 5-3. Detroit Crime Manager. Ivone thinks about walking Muncy, decides to pitch to him, and regrets not walking him as Muncy blasts a 2-run HR over the RF wall! Samardzija pitches a scoreless 7th, Duffy a scoreless 8th, and Osuna a scoreless 9th for the save and a Southbend Lynx win. Southbend Lynx leads the series 1-0.

Southbend Lynx 5, Detroit Crime 2

GAME #2 – Madison Bumgarner (19-6 3.08) vs. Jordan Yamamoto (6-3 3.36)

Detroit Crime puts its hopes on the shoulders of M.Bumgarner and Southbend counters with J.Yamamoto. Once again Detroit Crime takes the early lead in the T1 when Gardner reaches on Bichette’s error, LaStella 1bs, Harper is HBP, and Grandal gets an FC-rbi as he stays out of the DP. But to no avail, as Southbend Lynx Yamamoto bears down and fans Voit and Belt to get out of the inning. The missed opportunity for more runs would come back to haunt Detroit Crime. The Southbend Lynx strike back in the B1 when Altuve 1bs, Meadows gets an inf-1b and Bichette plates them both with a 2-run 2b. In the Southbend Lynx B2 with 2 outs Viloria bbs, Altuve 2bs, which sends Detroit Crime Bumgarner to the showers as Britton comes on in relief. Britton gets Escobar to hit the grounder to 2nd, albeit a hard grounder, that LaStella can’t handle and both runners score on the error for a 4-1 Southbend Lynx lead. Southbend Lynx Yamamoto looks good through the 2nd and 3rd but in the T4, after getting the first two outs, he gives up an A. Jones 1b, followed by a Machado 2-run HR to LF. Just like that Detroit Crime is back within a run at 4-3. Southbend Lynx brings in Walden who Ks Crawford to end the inning. Detroit Crime T.May and Southbend Lynx Walden throw scoreless 5th and 6th innings. Southbend Lynx brings in R.Moronta in the T7 and after he gets the first two outs he faces Detroit Crime B.Crawford, who unloads a solo-HR to RF to tie the game at 4-4! Detroit Crime T. May tosses a scoreless B7 and Southbend Lynx R.Moronta matches him with a scoreless T8. In the B8 Detroit Crime calls on D.Hudson to keep the game tied and starts the inning getting Escobar to F7, but Meadows follows with a 1b. Detroit Crime killer Muncy strides to the plate but D.Hudson fans him with a change-up bringing up B.Bichette. B. Bichette then doubles to LF and Meadows is waved home and scores on the close play at the plate for a 5-4 Southbend Lynx lead! Southbend Lynx Osuna takes the mound in the T9 and Ks PH DJ Stewart, gets Belt to F8, and then fans A.Jones to end the game. Southbend Lynx wins and takes the series 2-0!

Southbend Lynx 5, Detroit Crime 4

SERIES SUMMARY – Southbend gets a small measure of revenge over Detroit Crime with the 2 game sweep. Fielding was a major factor in the two games as both teams got some “free” runs due to shoddy fielding. But Southbend benefited a little more than Detroit Crime in that regard. Not a lot of hits by either team in the series as Detroit Crime only had 9 hits in two games and Southbend only 11 hits. But the difference, along with the fielding, was that Southbend got some timely hitting and that 9 of their 11 hits were for extra bases (including all 5 in the 1st game).

2019 WORLD SERIES

Detroit Crime vs. Tempe Tempers

https://mwbl.straybaseball.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/worldseries.gifThe 2019 World Series Recap was written to you by Jim Craddock.

Two Central Division titans face each other in the 2019 MWBL World Series.
In the AL, The Detroit Crime went 108-54, winning the AL Central by 25 games. Then they provided some postseason drama by finishing their ALDS series against Mesa Solar Sox with a combined no-hitter by Carlos Carrasco and Seranthony Dominguez in the fifth game. In the ALCS, they took down the Southbend Lynx in six games.
In the NL, perennial powerhouse Tempe Tempers racked up an amazing 126-36 record, winning the division by 23 games. They created plenty of drama of their own in the NLDS, taking the back-and-forth series from the Columbus Explorers with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning of the seventh game. In the NLCS, they had to win three one-run games (two of them extra-inning affairs) to take the series in five games from the Sacramento Capitals.

GAME #1 – Carlos Carrasco 19-6 (2.23)  – Corey Kluber 19-8 (2.20)

A pitching duel was expected with Kluber going against Carrasco, and the final score would make you think that starters both went deep. On the contrary, neither saw the fifth inning as both managers went all out to get leg up in the series. Carrasco pitched into trouble in the bottom of the first, but Madison_BumgarnerWS19Tempe left the bases loaded (the first of two innings in which they would do so). He couldn’t escape damage in the fourth inning, giving up Maikel Franco’s solo HR to give Tempe a 1-0 lead. Both pitchers left for pinch-hitters when their first at-bat came up. Maikel_Franco19WSFor Tempe, Kluber got through his four innings giving up only two hits. The bullpens took over, with Tempe’s manager having a particularly quick hook, using eight pitchers in the game, including five in the fifth inning, with Detroit mounting a rally that fizzled out. For Detroit, Madison Bumgarner tossed three innings of one-hit relief. Detroit did manage to tie the game on a seventh-inning sac fly by Adam Jones, scoring pinch-runner Daniel Descalso (running for Yasmani Grandal). That was it until the bottom of the ninth when Wilmer Difo led off the inning with a triple off Roenis Elias that went over the head of Cameron Maybin. Seranthony Dominguez came in the face Ozzie Albies. With the infield drawn in, Albies blooped one down the line in right that Bryce Harper couldn’t get to, driving in Difo with the game-winner.

Final Score: Tempe 2 – Detroit 1

W – Kyle Crick 1-0 (0.00)

L – Roenis Elias 0-1 (6.75)

HR – Maikel Franco (1)

GAME #2 – Mike Minor 14-6 (4.06) – Wade Miley 6-2 (2.21)

Another close, low-scoring affair, as both managers brought the hook with them. Paths were worn from the dugouts to the mound as Tempe used nine pitchers, and Detroit Ryan_BraunWS19-1used six. The scoring started early as Tempe got back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first from Ozzie Albies and Ryan Braun. Miley’s appreciation for the early run support was short-lived, as he left for a pinch-hitter before he could grab a bat. He ended up going two innings without giving up a hit. In fact, Detroit wouldn’t get their first hit until the sixth inning on a Luke Voit single. They would mount a rally in the fourth inning on a walk and an error, but Ozzie_AlbiesWS19three Tempe pitchers snuffed it out.  In the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Braun reached on a Mike Minor error, stole second, and then scored on Melky Cabrera’s double to make it 3-0 Tempe. That’s where it would stay as the tempers’ bullpen gave up three hits over seven innings and nailed down the shutout and the Game 2 win.

Final Score: Tempe 3 – Detroit 0

W – Kirby Yates 1-0 (0.00)

L – Mike Minor 0-1 (4.50)

HR – Ozzie Albies (1), Ryan Braun (1)

GAME #3 – Corey Kluber 19-8 (2.20)  – Aaron Nola 20-8 (2.25)

Aaron_NolaWS19Bringing the series back to Detroit, the Crime was looking for home cooking to help them solve the Tempers. Well, it worked. Aaron Nola got in some early trouble, as Joey Votto walked, Miguel Cabrera doubled, and Detroit got a sense of déjà vu. But two strikeouts and a lineout to Luke Voit ended the rally and the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Leadoff hitter Bryce Harper didn’t waste any time getting the crowd into it with a soBryce_HarperWS19lo home run. From there, a parade of Tempe pitchers (they used a total of seven relievers in the game) kept things quiet until the bottom of the fifth, when Bryce Harper doubled and Yasmani Grandal gave Detroit a 3-0 lead with a two-run shot to right field. Meanwhile, Aaron Nola was cruising for Detroit until the sixth inning, when Joey Votto walked, and JD Martinez drove him home with a double off the CF wall. Martinez went to third on a ground out, but then, with two outs he tried to steal home and was thrown out. Detroit pushed across an insurance run in the seventh, when Brett Gardner singled, went to second on Michael Brantley’s error, and scored on Martin Maldonado’s RBI two-out double. Tempe made three errors in the game.

Final Score: Detroit 4 – Tempe 1

W – Aaron Nola 1-0 (1.23)

L – Corey Kluber 0-1 (1.42)

HR – Bryce Harper (1), Yasmani Grandal (1)

GAME #4 – Wade Miley 6-2 (2.21) – Stephen Strasburg 9-11 (4.69)

Detroit was looking to even the series, but Tempe signaled early that it wouldn’t be easy. Before the home crowd could even get comfortable, Joey Votto ambushed Strasburg wJoey_VottoWS19ith a leadoff home run. In the second inning, Marcell Ozuna singled and scored on Jose Castillo’s base hit. Ozuna rode home on again in the fourth inning, this time on Maikel Franco’s two-run home run to make the score 4-0 and chase Stephen Strasburg from the game. The move didn’t help much, as Ozzie Albies greeted Carlos Carrasco with a solo home run. Things were going all Tempe’s way, as, in the bottom of the inning, Ozuna continued his good day by robbing Kendrys Morales of a home run and keeping Wade Miley’s no-hitter intact. Miley would lose the no-no on a sixth-inning leadoff Brandon Crawford single. Wade_MileyWS19That would be the end of Miley’s day, as Tempe’s manager was itching to make a pitching change. In the top of the sixth, Wilmer Difo tripled but was thrown out trying to steal home with two outs. Undeterred, the Tempers scored two more in the seventh on Joey Votto’s second solo home run of the day, and a Ryan Braun RBI single for a 6-0 lead. Detroit answered the two runs with two of their own in the bottom of the inning on Manny Machado’s two-run home run. That was the last gasp for the Crime, though. Tempe added a couple more demoralizers in the top of the ninth on a pair of doubles by Jeff Mathis and Yeonis Cespedes and a bloop RBI by Xander Bogearts. Tempe’s 9-2 victory gets them to within one win of the championship.

Final Score: Tempe 9 – Detroit 2

W – Wade Miley 1-0 (0.00)

L – Stephen Strasburg 0-1 (9.82)

HR – Joey Votto 2 (2), Ozzie Albies (2), Maikel Franco (2) & Manny Machado (1)

GAME #5 – Clay Buchholz 7-3 (1.85) – Madison Bumgarner 14-8 (3.35)

Ryan_BraunWS19-2Trying to extend their season, Detroit got off to a good start with a first-inning Luke Voit leadoff home run. They added to the lead with a pair of doubles by Manny Machado and Daniel Descalso. Tempe quickly answered back in the top of the second with a Marcell_OzunaWS19three-run home run by Maikel Franco, scoring Marcell Ozuna and Yeonis Cespedes ahead of him. The Tempers weren’t finished, as Ryan Braun followed up with a solo shot to make it 4-2 Tempe and knock out Crime starter Madison Bumgarner. Tempe added a run in the fourth on an Ozuna single and RBI double by Ryan Braun, and yet another on a JD Martinez RBI single that scored Xander Bogearts, who had doubled. Braun made his case for MVP with his second home run of the day in the top of the sixth inning to make it 7-2 Tempe. After failing to cash in a mini-rally in the seventh, Detroit entered the bottom of the ninth staring down the end of their season. Sparking some hope, Brandon Belt led off with a single and Brandon Crawford doubled to put two on for Bryce Harper. Harper rose to the moment with a three-run home run to bring the Crime to within two runs. Tempe manager brought in Dylan Floro to get a ground ball to shortstop for the second out. Kyle Crick then came in to face Manny Machado, who got him to swing and miss for the strikeout, the Save, and the 2019 MWBL Championship.

Final Score: Tempe 7 – Detroit 5

W – Jose G. Castillo 1-0 (0.00)

L – Madison Bumgarner 0-1 (8.31)

HR – Maikel Franco (3), Ryan Braun 2 (3), Bryce Harper (2) & Luke Voit (1)

Ryan_BraunWS19-2World Series MVP: Ryan Braun, who hit .600 (6-10), with 3 Home Runs, 5 RBI, AND 4 runs scored, and a double.

–Tempe used at least eight pitchers in every game of the series.

–The team that scored first won every game except Game 5.

—Wade Miley took a no-hitter into the 6th inning of Game 4.

2019 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Sacramento Capitals @ Tempe Tempers

The 2018 World Series champion Sacramento Capitals looked to continue towards a repeat while the Tempe Temper attempted to extend their winning streak during odd numbered years.  Tempe came into the series well rested while the Capital’s bullpen was a little tired having barely survived a seven-game match with Pittsburgh.
GAME #1 – Chris Sale 20-5 (1.35)  – Corey Kluber 19-8 (2.20)

Kluber started for the hometown Tempers and went three scoreless innings before yielding to a pinch hitter. Sale got the start for the Capital’s and racked up nine strike outs over seven scoreless innings. In the 6th, Upton took Crick deep to break the 0-0 tie.  In the 8th,  Upton went deep again to make it 2-0.  Tempe traded Upton mid-season to Sacramento, so he definitely made them regret that trade.  Perez and Strop pitched two scoreless innings to close it out.  Tempe managed only one hit and the Sacramento’s pitchers only faced 28 batters.

Sacramento 2-0,  W – Sale,  L – Crick,  S – Strop

GAME #2 – Zach Greinke 23-5 (2.73) – Clay Buchholz 7-3 (1.85)

Upton was back at it again hitting his 3rd solo homerun of the series in the 1st.  In the bottom of the 1st, Tempe scored their first runs of the series.  Votto walked and Ozuna hit a two-run homerun.  Martinez then hit a solo shot to put Tempe up 3-1.  In the 2nd, Stanton walked, Beltre doubled, and then Molina singled.  Stanton scored on the single, but Brantley gunned Beltre at the plate. 3-2 TEM.  Buchholz didn’t have his control, so Tempe did a double switch and brought in Sipp to pitch and Difo to play 3B.  Sacramento countered by bringing in the right handed hitting Reynolds to replace Moreland.  Reynolds grounded out, but Sac went to the bench again and had Grossman pinch hit for Greinke.  Grossman doubled to tie it up after two innings.  3-3.   In the bottom of the 5th, Tempe went back on top on a Brantley rbi double.  4-3.  In the 6th, Lindor reached on a walk, stole second base, moved to 3rd on a fielder’s choice and then stole home with two outs to tie it up. 4-4.  In the top of the 7th, Flores hit a solo homerun as a pinch hitter to give Sac their first lead since the 1st.  TEM 5-4.  In the bottom of the 7th a perfectly executed hit and run by Bogaerts put runners on the corners.  A Brantley sac fly scored JD and put Bogaerts at 2nd when Stanton tried for the play at the plate. 5-5.  Braun struck out but ended up reaching on a passed ball.  Albies then walked to load the bases with one out.  Cespedes pinch hit for Castillo and hit a deep sac fly to put Tempe back in the lead.  6-5.   Braun tried to sneak a steal of home, but was called out for the final out.  In the top of the 9th, Yates walked the lead off hitter Beltre.  DeShields then pinch ran for Beltre and stole 2B.  Molina then followed with a rbi sinlge.  Floro relaced Yates and then Castillo replaced Floro as Tempe played the platoons to get out of the inning.  6-6.  In the 11th, Tempe’s last available pitcher Mikolas came on.  Sac’s last available pitcher Coleman came on in the 12th.  The game remained tied until the 14th, when Castro singled, was moved to second by Yadie, and then scored when Reynolds hit an RBI single.  7-6 SAC.  In the bottom of the 14th, Bogaerts led off with a solo homerun to tie it again. 7-7.  Finally, in the bottom of the 17th, Albies doubled to lead off the inning. The weak hitting Mathis fouled off two bunt attempts, so Tempe let him swing away.  The result was a slow grounder up the middle that scored the winning run.  8-7 TEM.  Mikolas got the win going 6 innings and only giving up one run in relief.

Tempe 8-7 17INN,  W – Mikolas,  L – Coleman

GAME #3 – Corey Kluber 19-8 (2.20)  – Max Scherzer 27-5 (1.56)

In the top of the 3rd, Cespedes pinch hit for Mathis and doubled.  Tempe’s longest tenured player at eight years, Melky Cabrea then pinch hit for Kluber and singled to put runners on the corners.  Votto took one to the track that allowed Cespedes to outrun Stanton’s throw.  TEM 1-0.  Scherzer then settled down and didn’t allow a single hit for the next three innings.  Unfortunately for Sacramento, Tempe’s pen pitched seven scoreless innings, including 2.1 innings from Crick for the save.

Tempe 1-0,  W – SIPP, L – Scherzer, S – Crick

GAME #4 – Wade Miley 6-2 (2.21) – Chris Sale 20-5 (1.35)

Due to the fog of war…the script was lost for game four so we’ll start in the bottom of the 9th with two outs.  Tempe was leading 1-0 after scoring an unearned run in the 1st inning.  Sacrament had runners on 3rd and 1st.  They sent Dickerson (who only had 8 SB during the year) on a straight steal of 2B. Mathis the defensive replacement catcher (1 error in 575 TC) tried to gun him to end the game and he air mailed it over 2nd allowing the tying run to score on the error.   1-1.  Buchholz took the blown save, but he managed to get out of the inning and pitch a scoreless 10th.  Grienke (the other game two starter) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th for Sacramento.  Fields pitched a scoreless 11th for Sacramento and Mikolas was perfect for Tempe in the bottom of the 11th.  In the 12th, Brantley continued his playoff heroics with a solo shot.  TEM 2-1.  Mikolas pitched another perfect inning in the 12th.

Tempe 2-1 12INN  W – Mikolas  2-0,  L – Fields

GAME #5 – Corey Kluber 19-8 (2.20) – Ryne Stanek 6-4 (2.68)

Unlike some of the prior games, both starters went deep into the game.  In the 2nd, Tempe got on the board with a Brantley double and then a pinch hit double by Miggy. TEM 1-0.  In the 3rd, Ozuna crushed a solo shot. TEM 2-0.  Sacramento finally got to Kluber in the 6th, when Lindor hit a solo shot to right. TEM 2-1.  In the 7th, Albies gave Tempe some insurance with a solo shot.  TEM 3-1.  In the bottom of the 7th, Sac threatened with runners on the 3rd and 2nd, but Hughes bailed out Kluber.   Tempe ended up using six relievers over the final 8 outs to preserve the win and wrap up the series.

TEM 3-1, W – Kluber, L – Stanek, S – Yates.

Every game was extremely tight and things could have easily gone the other way.  Pitching dominated the series with Tempe’s relief pitching being the key to their success.  During the series, Sacramento only hit .141 and their lead-off hitter Cano didn’t even have a single hit.  Tempe wasn’t much better hitting .155 and only had one starter hit above .200.  Tempe’s pen put up a collective ERA of 1.34 over 40.1 innings.

It wasn’t easy to pick an MVP, but I’ll give the nod to the pitcher that only pitched when the games went into extra innings.  Mikolas was 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 8 IP.  The series would have been completely different if he hadn’t won those two extra-inning games.  Sale was also deserving in a losing cause.  He was 1-0 with 0.00 ERA, 15 SO, 4 H, and 13 IP.

2019 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Southbend Lynx @ Detroit Crime

The Southbend Lynx face off against the Detroit Crime for the AL Championship.
The season series stood at 9-5 in Detroit’s favor, with Southbend losing all 7 games at Detroit. Southbend comes into the series with the #1 Hitting team at .271/.340/.462.

Detroit was at #7 with .254/.330/.439. The long ball, which was key for both teams, is pretty even at 242 HRs for Southbend and 235 HRs for Detroit.

Southbend comes in at #2 in Pitching with Detroit hot on their heels at #3. Southbend’s one problem area is in giving up walks, tho they only yielded 149 HRs, the least in the AL. Fielding wise its all Detroit who were #2, whereas Southbend was at #10.

GAME #1 – Michael Foltynewicz 22-5 (3.06) – Aaron Nola 20-8  (2.25)

Southbend strikes first in the T3 when Zack Cozart 3bs and with 2 out Jose Altuve hits a 2-run HR for an early 2-0 Lynx lead. In the SBL T4 Max Muncy 2bs, after Eduardo Escobar and Jake Cave strike out, Austin Meadows plates Muncy with an rbi-1b. But SBL Michael Foltynewicz couldn’t protect the lead as Yasmani Grandal leads off the B4 with a 2b, Kyle Schwarber bbs, and Brandpm Belt ties the game with a 3-run HR. Its gets worse for the Lynx when J.P. Crawford 1bs and Brett Gardner hits a 2-run HR for a 5-3 Crime lead. SBL gets one back in the T5 when Cozart 2bs and Altuve 2bs him home. But Detroit would put the game away in the B5 off Jeurys Familia when Grandal bbs, Schwarber hits a 2-run HR, Belt bbs, Crawford bb, and Gardner bloops a 2-rbi 2b, moves to 3rd on the throw, and then scores on Ben Zobrist sac fly. The pitchers take over from here and there was no more scoring.

Both aces are less then stellar, but the Detroit bullpen is better then Southbend’s.  Southbend pitchers give up 9 walks in the game with 4 of those runners scoring. Detroit leads the series 1-0.

Detroit 10, Southbend 4

DET W – Aaron Nola (1-0)  SBL L – Michael Foltynewicz (0-1)

GAME #2 – Edwin Jackson 8-10 (3.56) – Carlos Carrasco 19-6 (2.23)

Southbend jumps on DET Carlos Carrasco quickly in the T1; Jed Lowrie bbs, Max Muncy 1bs, Eduardo Escobar rips a 1b to LF and Brett Gardner pegs Lowrie at the plate, but wait! Yasmani Grandal drops the throw and Jed Lowrie scores! Both Muncy and Escobar move up to 2nd and 3rd. Austin Meadows, 1 out later, blasts a 2-rbi 1b for a 3-0 SBL lead. In the SBL T3 Jake Cave 1bs with 2 out and scores on Meadows rbi-3b. That would be the end of the scoring for Southbend. But they don’t need it was Edwin Jackson is on the mark tossing 5 innings of Shutout ball as he fans 4 and only gives up 4 hits. The SBL bullpen comes through in this game giving up no hits over the last 3.2 innings to even the series at 1-1. Carrasco was the victim of the normally strong DET fielding as he gives up only 1 ER in 6.1IP. Zobrist is the lone hitting star for DET going 2-3
with a walk. Southbend finally wins a game at Detroit after 8 tries!

Southbend 4, Detroit 0

SBL W- Edwin  Jackson (1-0) DET L – Carlos Carrasco (0-1)

The series shifts to Southbend.
GAME #3 – Stephen Strasburgh 9-11 (4.69) – Freddy Peralta 11-2 (3.72)

Southbend opens the scoring in the B3 when Jose Altuve smacks a 2 out solo-HR. In the DET T4 Manny Machado 1bs, steals 2nd, and then scores on Yasmani Grandal‘s rbi-1b when the ball is cut off to get Grandal at 2nd. SBl retakes the lead in the B4 when Max Muncy hits a lead-off solo-HR. Eduardo Escobar then 2bs and 1 out later Mark Canha singles him home for a 3-1 SBL lead. But DET is not to be denied as in the T5 Adam Jones hits a lead off solo-HR of his own, Brett Gardner 1bs, steals 2nd, moves to 3rd on Ben Zobrist fly to RF, Justin R. Miller comes on for the SBL, and Harper bbs, Machado then crushes a 3-run HR to give DET a 5-3 lead! In the BL B6 Canha blasts a 2 out 2b, Stephen Strasburg is pulled for Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner comes in faces Mason Williams, throws a wild pitch, and then gives up an rbi-1b. In the SBL B8 DET Seranthony Dominguez is on for his 2nd inning of work and faces Muncy to lead off the inning. Muncy belts his 2nd HR of the game, a solo-HR to tie the game at 5-5! Dominguez settles down and gets the next 3 Lynx to end the inning. SBL Moronta is stil on the mound for the SBL to start the T9 and Gardner leads off with a 1b, but he’s nailed by Maxwell trying to steal 2nd. Escobar then throws away J.P. Crawford‘s grounder, and Zobrist follows with a rbi-3b, but is thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it into a inside-the-park HR. DET goes to R.Elias to close out the game and PH Mark Trumbo fans, Zack Cozart then 1bs, Bruce Maxwell flies out to CF, and Lucas Duda is called on to PR, and he then steals 2nd on a broken H&R play with Altuve at bat. But Roenis Elias is able to strike out Altuve to end the game! Detroit takes a 2-1 lead in the series!

Detroit 6, Southbend 5

DET W – Seranthony Dominguez (1-0) S – Roenis Elias (1) SBL L –Reyes Moronta (0-1)

GAME #4 –  Aaron Nola 20-8  (2.25) – Michael Foltynewicz 22-5 (3.06)

DET gets on SBL Michael Foltynewicz right away in the T1 when Bryce Harper gets his 1st hit of the series a solo-HR to deep RF. But SBL is used to this and comes right back in the B1 when Max Muncy draws a 2 out bb and Eduardo Escobar buries a 2-run HR off Nola for a 2-1 SBL lead. Jake Cave would follow with a long 2b, but that would be the rest of the hits for Southbend in the game as Aaron Nola bears down. Nola would retire the next 22 SBL in a row. Fortunately for the Lynx Foltynewicz only gives up the HR to Harper through 6 innings. Foltynewicz would bend giving up 6 walks and 1 more hit, but would not break, as he turns the ball over to Sean Gilmartin, Reyes Moronta, and Roberto Osuna to close out the game. The SBL tie up the series at 2-2 going into Game 5.

Southbend 2, Detroit 1

SBL W – Michael Foltynewicz (1-1) S – Roberto Osuna (1) DET L – Aaron Nola (1-1)

GAME #5 – Carlos Carrasco 19-6 (2.23) – Edwin Jackson 8-10 (3.56)

SBL scores first in the B2 on a Mark Canha solo-HR. In the T3 DET Maybin 2bs, Brett Gardner then 1bs to LF, and Cameron Maybin scores as Gardner is cut down at 2nd. In the SBL B3 JoseAltuve 1bs, steals 2nd, and then Max Muncy 2-out rbi-1b puts SBL back out on top. Pitching takes over from there as SBL E.Jackson goes 5IP giving up the lone run while fanning 4, and amazingly not walking anyone. Jeurys Familia comes on for 2IP of scoreless work through the 7th. For DET Carlos Carracso goes 4IP giving up the 2 runs, then turns the ball over to Mike Minor, who eventually will go 5IP giving up only 2 hits and no runs. The turning point of the game is in the T8 when SBL Seasn Gilmartin is brought in, he walks Maybin, then gives up a infield 1b to Gardner, after J.P. Crawford grounds out back to Gilmartin, Ben Zobrist follows with a 2-rbi 2b for a 3-2 DET lead. One out later Manny Machado would put the game away with a 2-run HR. SBL would get two runners on in the B8, but DET would stay with Minor who Ks Austin Jackson and Mason Williams to end the inning. Minor would throw a perfect 9th for the DET win! DET now leads the series 3-2!

Detroit 5, Southbend 2

DET W – Mike Minor (1-0) SBL L – Sseasn Gilmartin (0-1)

Series goes back to Detroit. Southbend has its back to the wall.
GAME #6 – Freddy Peralta 11-2 (3.72) – Stephen Strasburgh 9-11 (4.69)

Both starters are solid through 4 innings. In the B5 DET Brandon Belt 1bs, Cameron Maybin grounds out moving Belt, Brett Gardner then hits a rbi-2b off the wall for a 1-0 DET lead. SBL Freddy Peralta gets out of the inning by getting J.P. Crawford to P5 and Ben Zobrist to F8. DET Stephen Strasburg would mow through the SBL through 7IP racking up 8 Ks along the way. In the SBL T8 Jose Altuve leads off with a 2b, Jed Lowrie draws a walk, and DET calls on Roenis Elias (Game 3 closer) to faceMax  Muncy. But Muncy stuns the home crowd as he belts a 3-run HR to give SBL the lead and possibly save their season. SBL still has Reyes Moronta on the mound to start the B8, and Zobrist leads off with a 1b, Bryce Harper gets a scratch infield hit, bringing up Manny Machado. But Reyes Moronta bears down and Fans Martin Machado, gets Maldonado to F9. Roberto Osuna is brought in and gets Kyle Schwarber to L4 to end the inning. In the B9 Osuna would give up a 1b to Belt, but get Maybin to hit into a 6-4-3 DP and Gardner to F7 to end the game and knot the series at 3-3!

Southbend 3, Detroit 1

SBL W – Reyes Moronta (1-1) S – Roberto Osuna (2) DET L – Stephen Strasburg (0-1)

GAME #7 – Michael Foltynewicz 22-5 (3.06) – Aaron Nola 20-8  (2.25)

The all or nothing game for both teams!

Game 7 would follow the same track as Game 6 as the pitcher’s would dominate. DET Aaron Nola picked up where he left off in Game 4 keeping the SBL scoreless through the 8 innings he pitched. SBL had their chances during the game as they left 9 runners on base and had the bases loaded twice in the game. But they just couldn’t come up with the big hit. The only scoring came in the DET B8 when Brett Gardner bb’s, J.P. Crawford bounces into a FC, Ben Zobrist bb’s, and Bryce Harper hits a 3-run HR to atone for his poor overall series. SBL Mark Canha would lead off with a 1b in the T9, but DET Seranthony Dominguez would come on and strikeout Zack Cozart, get PH Mark Trumbo on a FC, and then finish the game getting PH Austin Meadows to hit into a FC.
Detroit wins the game 3-0 and takes the series 4-3!

Detroit 3, Southbend 0

DET W – Aaron Nola (2-1) S – Seranthony Dominguez (1) SBL L – Michael Foltynewicz (1-2)

Overall there were key/clutch hits by players on both teams. But the most crucial stat line in the series is the lack of hitting from one player in the series. SBL Jed Lowrie, a key contributor for the SBL during the season, goes 0-25 with a paltry 5 walks. Also, to a lesser degree, SBL Austin Jackson also goes hitless 0-21 with only 1 HBP in the series. But getting almost no production out of Jed Lowrie was devastating to the SBL. DET Bryce Harper also did not have a big series, but he at least produced some runs during the series as he had the clutch HR in Game 7 and a HR in Game 4. Other players on DET also had poor series but they at least produced something. The biggest hitting surprise of the series was the performance of DET Brett Gardner. The series put in by Gardner was quite amazing as he had a stat line of .480/.500/.720, he went 12-25 w/3 2bs, 1 HR, 4 runs scored, and 6 RBI. Brandon Belt, Manny Machado, and Harper all had the big 3 run HRs for DET in the series, but it was Gardner who many times kept things going. As such he was clearly the MVP of the series. Congratulations to Sergio and Detroit on a fine season and playoff series!

2019 NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES #2

Pittsburgh Lumber Company @ Sacramento Capitals

The Sacramento Capitals (115-47) host the Pittsburgh Lumber Company (95-65) as the winners of the National League West and National League East face off in the National League Division Series.
GAME #1 – Mike Clevinger 12-11 (3.08) – Max Scherzer 27-5 (1.56)

Max Scherzer opens the series with a gem, pitching 7 shutout innings while giving up just 2 hits. Stanton got on the board first with a solo shot in the 2nd inning, while Lindor added to the lead with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the 6th. An RBI triple by Grossman and single by Upton in the 8th increased Sacramento’s lead to 5-0, shutting down Game 1.

GAME #2 – Michael Wacha 6-6 (2.97) – Chris Sale 20-5 (1.35)

Once again, Stanton got on the board first with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning–which would have been enough in another shutout by the Capitals pitching staff. This time led by Chris Sale, who pitched 6 scoreless inning. Stanton would hit another 2-run home run in the 6th inning followed by an RBI double in the 7th inning. Sacramento takes Game 2 6-0.

Sacramento leads the series 2-0 behind impeccable pitching and timely hitting and heads east to Pittsburgh with the hopes of a series sweep.

Down 2-0 in the series, Pittsburgh looks to turn their fortunes around at home.

GAME #3 – Zach Greinke 23-5 (2.73) – Jameson Taillon 13-7 (2.69)

Sacramento jumps out to a 2-0 lead after two against Taillon, and things aren’t looking good. But Willy Adames (4-5 in the game) collects a 2-run double to tie it up. The teams trade runs in the 5th and we go extra frames! Juan Soto plates Mallex Smith in the bottom of the 10th and the Lumber Company win it 4-3.

GAME #4 – Max Scherzer 27-5 (1.56) – Sean Manaea 11-6 (2.33)

Bouyed by their victory in Game 3, the Pirates square off against Mad Max Scherzer with some confidence. And Scherzer isn’t exactly intimidated, fanning 12 batters… but he can’t handle Francisco Cervelli. The Pittsburgh catcher belts a solo HR in the 2nd and also scores after a leadoff double om the 5th and Sean Manaea goes the distance for the 2-0 upset. The series is now knotted up at 2-2!

GAME #5 – Chris Sale 20-5 (1.35)  – Mike Clevinger 12-11 (3.08)

Next up for SAC is Chris Sale. Pittsburgh buys what he’s selling, as Cervelli and Marte both take him deep early. Unfortunately Clevinger is a little shaky, surrendering a pair of runs (including a Stanton HR). We find ourselves with a 3-2 lead into the 7th, where Kenley Jansen coughs up an unearned run to tie it at 3-3. Colin McHugh serves up a solo HR to Aaron Judge in the bottom of the 8th, and Raisel Iglesias slams the door as the Lumber Company wins it 4-3.

Timely hitting and solid pitching allows Pittsburgh to take all 3 games at home and head back to Sacramento with dreams of playing spoiler.   Pittsburgh heads back to Sacramento with a 3-2 series lead.
GAME #6 – Michael Wacha 6-6 (2.97) – Ryne Stanek 6-4 (2.68)

The Caps turn to Ryan Stanek in a do-or-die Game 6 while the Lumber Company hand the ball to Michael Wacha for his 2nd start of the series. Sacramento jumps to an early lead with a lead-off single by Cano, double by Lindor, and sacrifice hits by Stanton and Beltre. Sacramento’s lead wouldn’t last long; with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the top of the 4th, Brian Dozier singled to right-centerfield, scoring both and tying the game at 2. The Capitals pull Stanek and turn the game over to the pen. The Capitals eventually take the lead in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI single from Cano, and extend the lead with a solo home run off the bat of Adrian Beltre. Sacramento’s bullpen shut down the Lumber Company with 5 scoreless to secure the win, 4-2, and a series tie at 3-3.

GAME #7 – Jameson Taillon 13-7 (2.69) – Max Scherzer 27-5 (1.56)

Sacramento turns to Scherzer for the series finale to face off against Taillon. This time it was Pitttsburgh that would jump to an early lead, getting on the scoreboard with a Soto 2-run home run in the top of the 1st inning. Pittsburgh would extend its lead to 3-0 in the top of the 2nd with a Brian Dozier solo home run. Down 0-3 in the 3rd, Sacramento gets on the board with a Justin Upton 2-run home run followed by a sac hit by Moreland to tie the game at 3 all. The game would stay tied 3-3 until the 10th inning when Johnathan LuCroy would come off the bench to give the Lumber Company the 4-3 lead with a Dozier-scoring double. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the 10th, Cano get’s the leadoff walk and is promptly replaced at 1st by DeShields Jr. DeShields swipes 2nd and is driven home by a Lindor single, tying the game at 4-4. The game remains tied at 4 and Castro takes over for Cano at 2B. Bottom of the 11th and Yarbrough on the mound–Yadier Molina reaches on a Valentin error; Yarbrough strikes out Moreland for out number one; Reddick comes in to run and Torreyes comes in to pinch hit; and Yarbrough gives Torreyes the pass, opting instead to face Starlin Castro. Castro makes him pay, launching a series winning home run over the leftf ield wall. Sacramento beats Pittsburgh in 11, 7-4

In a very close series, Pittsburgh hit a triple slash of .190/.247/.341 with 16 runs in 7 games, and held the Capitals to a 3.32 ERA, while Sacramento hit a similar triple slash of .190/.276/.367 with 28 runs, and held the Lumber Company to a 2.26 ERA. Giancarlo Stanton led the Capitals offense batting .240 with 4 HR, 5 runs, and 9 RBI, while Brian Dozier led the Lumber Company ith a .273 BA, 3 2B, 1 HR, and 5 RBI.
