Banana splits…

·         Selkirk Steelers @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview

Selkirk and Columbus – 2 new teams playing for fun, pride, and experience meet in Columbus (short bus ride) as the two NL Central teams look to get some experience for their recent call ups.

Game #1:

With 2 outs in bottom of 9th, Torrealba HRs (4) to tie game 2-2 and send it to extra innings. Bottom of the 11th Desmond reaches on a walk. Steals 2nd and 3rd. With runners on the corners, Lindblom gets PH Liddi to whiff (perhaps a bad call by the ump?? – Liddi thought so). But Nunez steps up with 2 outs and hits a grounder that Johnson has to eat and the winning run scores. 3-2 Columbus. WP Perez (3-2) LP Lindblom (1-4)

Game #2: Sandoval (9) and Zimmerman (24) trade homers in the 2nd for 1-1 score. But after Zimmerman HR, Hammel loads the bases with a double, single and walk – Explorers big threat. Seddon flies out, runners hold , but when De Aza follows with fly out to LF, the Explorers get a run, 2-1 COL. Seddon, in his 2nd at-bat, this time with 2 on and 0 outs, he bunts into a DP and that essentially killed the threat, good defensive playing. McKenry 2 out single drives in the tying run in the 6th for Selkirk (set up by 2 Seddon walks). Big play in 9th when Jhonaton Solano cuts down Evereth Cabrera attempting to steal keeps game tied a 2-2 and again we go to extra innings. Hammels tough 8 innings (6 hits, 2 runs) but no decision. After Columbus fails to get the winning run across the plated in the 10th, B.J. Upton leads off the 11th with a solo HR (20). Rapada comes in for the bottom half to try and nail down the save. Zimmerman leads off with a doubl e, but Rapada fans J.Solano. Then he fans Desmond. And then he gets Donavon Solano to fly out to end the game. 3-2 SELKIRK (11 innings, again). WP Oswalt (6-5), S Rapada (9), LP Bass (4-6)
Game #3:

2 out 2 run Soriano HR (27) in the first gets Columbus up 2-0. Back to back doubles by Cabrera and Dyson in the 3rd tie it up for Selkirk. The 3rd one, by Sandoval, puts them in the lead 3-2. Harrell led off the bottom of the 3rd with one of those pop ups in front of the mound that nobody played – and he reached on a single. Floyd was so ticked, he then threw one that bounced in front of home for a WP, Harrell to 2nd. And he scores the tying run when Victorino doubles. Desmond breaks the tie in the 6th with a solo HR (13), 4-3 Columbus. Gomez provides some insurance in the 7th with a 2 out rbi single, 5-3 COL. In the 8th with 2 outs, PH David Lough gets his first major league hit, and drives in a run and increases the insurance, 6-3 Columbus. Belisario faces 3 in the 9th, fans 2, and gets the save (27). WP Harrell (7-15), LP Floyd (8-11).

Game #4: Liddi squibber up the middle in the 2nd drives in the 1st run of the game, 1-0 COL. Victorino cuts down the potential tying run at home to end the 4th inning. With Axlerod holding a slim 1-0 lead (4 hitter for both teams) after 8, Liddi opens the bottom of the 8th with a HR (1) – where did that come from! – and he now has a 2-0 lead. Howell (who just entered in the 8th) then gives up a single to J.Solano. Torrealba, PH for Axelrod, doubles and Thornton comes in to pitch with no outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd. IF is drawn in, top of the order up. Blackmon bounces one to the left of the mound, Cabrera snares it fires home, out. 1 down, runners on the corners, IF still in. Victorino chops one to 1st, only play was at 1st, run scores, 3-0. Belisario faces 4 in the 9th, 2 out single, and 2 Ks and preserves the shutout, gets the save (28). Final Columbus 3 Selkirk 0. WP Axelrod (4-4), LP Johnson (10-14)
Game #5: Cuddyer SF in 3rd gets the Steelers off and running, 1-0. Zimmerman 2 out single in the 6th ties the game. Back to back singles in the 8th drive Happ out of the game with the Steelers mounting a threat. Perez fans Upton and then gets PH Dyson to tap one back to him and he starts the DP to end the inning. Game tied 1-1 midway through 8. Alvarez taking the hill for Selkirk. And after 9 innings the scored is tied 1-1, extra innings (AGAIN!). Bourjos opens the 10th with a single, Kirkman promptly picks him off, Cuddyer then singles (11th hit of the game for Selkirk to 4 to Columbus). He steals 2nd. Pops out Sandoval for 2nd out and Upton then singles to LF and Cuddyer beats the throw home for 2-1 lead. Defensive substitutions in the 10th for Selkirk, Lindblom still on the mound. Desmond leads off with single. With 1 out he steals 2nd. With 2 outs, Young (Jr) singles to RF, Cuddyer flings it to home to get the streaking Desmond … safe … tie game and Young (Jr) takes 2nd on the throw. Carpenter is then given a free pass to face Donavon Solana. He pops up and we are going to the 11th (where all the other extra inning games have ended). Santiago opens the 11th with a walk of new reliever Stinson and Robinson PHs for Lindblom. Profar in to PR, Robinson attempts to bunt but after getting 2 strikes he draws a walk. Runners 1st and 2nd, no outs. Adams doubles (13th Selkirk hit) drives in 1, for 3-2 lead, runners at 2nd and 3rd, still no outs. PB, 4-2. Fly out to CF, not enough to score Adams. Grounder to Stinson, can’t score Adams, 2 outs. But Cuddyer bloops a double and it’s 5-2. Bottom half, Rapada in for the save. Soriano opens with a ground out, then Zimmerman singles and Rapada hits Victorino, Desmond up. But he flies out as does J.Solano and Selkirk wins it 5-2 (again settled in the 11th). Lindblom (2-4), S Rapada (10), LP Stinson (1-1).

Game #6:

Selkirk 1st, Sandoval dying quail, rbi, Upton triple, rbi, 2-0. De Aza solo HR (9) in 3rd makes it Selkirk up 2-1. In the 4th, Zimmerman doubles home Soriano to tie the game at 2. Well sports fans, for the 4th time this series we have a tie game at the end of 9, 2-2. Will it go to 11 again? Zimmerman walks to lead off the bottom of the 10th. With 1 out he steals 2nd. Torrealba grounds him to 3rd, Carpenter is walked intentionally to face P Perez. PH J. Solano steps in with 2 outs, fights one off and fists one into RF for a walk-off rbi single. Columbus wins 3-2. WP Perez (4-2), LP Howell (0-1).

Series Summary *

Not a lot of runs – 4 extra inning games (each team winning 2) – the 2 non-extra innings games were each won by 3 runs by Columbus who managed a 4-2 series win. Lots of fun and excitement for two teams who will be watching the playoffs on TV this year.

·         Coconut Creek Crushers @ Fremont Cannons

Series Preview

Both teams are out of it. Fremont’s last homestand was a sweep to the visiting Lynx.

Game #1:

*Kuroda nearly perfect*
Dayan Viciedo‘s single in the sixth inning was the only thing that stood between Hiroki Kuroda and a perfect game, as he improves to 19-7. CCC wins 4-0.

Game #2:

The Crushers crushed it today, winning 12-4.

Game #3:

Another home loss for the Cannons, as the Crushers take it 5-1. Nolasco left early due to injury but should be fine to make his next start.

Game #4:

Poor pitching and defense doomed Fremont in this, as the home losing streak extends to 13 with a 13-5 loss.

Game #5:

Freddy Garcia pitched well in attempting to earn his second victory of the season, but it would remain 1-1 until Dayan Viciedo singled in Brandon Phillips for the Cannons 2-1, 10-inning victory.

Game #6:

Fremont gets some momentum going, and with the help of five home runs, takes the finale 14-4.

Series Summary *

With Kuroda’s near-perfection, Coconut Creek takes the series 4-2. Scripts saved and available on request.

W – Pettitte (9), L – Verlander (10), S – Johnson (39)

Series Summary *

Tempe took 5 of 6 and is still in shock. I don’t think I’ve seen Lee and Verlander lose two starts in a series let alone both of them in the same series….Maybe it is the BRAUN impact…. or Maybe Sacramento was just throwing the games so they won’t have to play the Wild Card winner in the playoffs?
Pettitte was the player of the series for Tempe going 2-0 with a 0.00 era over 10 innings in games 1 and 6. He recorded 12 SO and only gave up 4 hits.

Game #1: Southbend M.Harrison vs. DET Z.Britton
SBL open the scoring when Altuve bbs, moves up on a groundout, Morse rbi-1b, and a Joyce 2-run HR. But DET comes right back in the bottom half when Ichiro 1bs, A.Jones rbi-3b, Longoria bbs, Maybin rbi-1b, and a Smoak rbi-1b ties it at 3-3. SBL retake the lead in the 3rd when Ludwick 2bs and scores on Morse rbi-1b. The SBL add to their lead in the 4th when Lowrie 2bs, Barmes rbi-1b, Wigginton bbs, and Cedeno rips an rbi-1b. In the DET 7th Hamilton hits a PH solo-HR followed by a Peralta solo-HR to cut the lead to 6-5 SBL. Thats all for M.Harrison as the SBL bullpen comes on and closes the door on DET with Motte earning his 34th save. SBL 6, DET 5

Barmes would add an rbi-1b later in the inning for a 6-1 SBL lead. SBL add two more in the 7th on another Joyce 2-run HR to put it away. S.Diamond is strong after the 1st and goes 6 innings for the win. SBL 8, FRE 1
Game #3: Southbend D.Holland vs. DET S.Strasburg
DET jumps on the board quick in the 1st with an Ichiro solo-HR. SBL ties it right back with a Wigginton solo-HR in the 2nd. Barmes gives the SBL a 2-1 lead with a solo-HR in the 6th. Strasburg is rolling up the Ks as he has 10 through 6 innings. SBL add another run in the 8th when Escobar 2bs and D’Arnaud rips an rbi-2b. Strasburg stays in through the 9th and records his 16th strikeout against no walks! It looks as though DET will waste his strong outing as Motte comes on to close out the 9th. But wait, Longoria leads off with a 1b and 1 out later Harper ties the game with a 2-run HR. Ouch! Trying to stretch their bullpen SBL brings on Brach and Grandal reaches 1st on Trumbo’s error, PH Sweeney then bbs, Beckham then 1bs to load the bases.
