2013 WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS- WEEK #20

· Motor City Muscle @ Jersey Nor’easters
Series Preview	Jersey clings to a game lead over New York and hopes to strengthen their position against last place Motor City.
Game #1:	Ricky Romero goes the distance tossing a 6-hit shutout. Reed Johnson and Eric Thames hit homers early and Jersey wins 4-0.
Game #2:	Motor City’s Mike Leake scatters 9 hits over 8 innings and takes home a win for Motor City. Adding insult to the Nor’easters he even hits a 2-run homer. The Muscle win 8-4.
Game #3:	Jersey’s Johnny Cueto raises his record to 10-8 as Jersey wins the game 4-2. Eric Thames has 3 hits for Jersey including his second homer of the series. Nate Jones gets the save.
Game #4:	Chris Capuano pitches 7 strong innings for Jersey and hangs on to win a 4-3 nail biter. Howie Kendrick hits a key home run for the Nor’easters.
Game #5:	Motor City shows why they’re the Muscle. Charlie Morton pitches a complete game and Mike Trout why he’s Mike Trout slugging his 25th homer and collecting 4 RBI. Motor City wins 7-1.
Game #6:	They save the best for last. Ricky Romero and Motor City’s Joe Blanton lock up in a scoreless duel. Romero goes 8 innings for Jersey and Blanton pitches 10 scoreless for the Muscle. Finally in the bottom of the 13th Choo hits a game winning triple for Jersey and the Noreasters win 1-0.
Series Summary *	Jersey wins the series 4-2 and in all probability hang on to 1st place in the Division. New York will need to sweep their series to overtake the Nor’easters. The player of the series is Ricky Romero who pitched 17 scoreless innings getting one win and keeping the Nor’easters in line to win the second game.

· Camarillo Quest @ Roseville Thorns
Series Preview	A match-up between 2nd and 3rd in the NL West and also the top 2 in the race for the Wild Card.
Game #1:	RVT 3 – CAM 2 Two run shot by LaRoche in the 6th is the difference.
Game #2:	CAM 4 – RVT 1 in 11 2 HR’s by Camarillo in the 11th win the game.
Game #3:	CAM 3 – RVT 1 Wilson goes 9 for Camarillo giving up 2 hits 1 run.
Game #4:	RVT 5 – CAM 3 Roseville breaks a tie in the bottom of the 8th and holds on to win.
Game #5:	CAM 7 – RVT 1 Aybar hits a grand slam in the 9th to put this one away.
Game #6:	RVT 4 – CAM 1 A desperate Roseville team has Weeks steal 4 bases to manufacture some runs and Roseville earns the split.
Series Summary *	Camarillo and Roseville split the series 3 games apiece

· Selkirk Steelers @ Clovis Wheat Kings
Series Preview	5th place Selkirk comes to 4th place Clovis hoping to improve its position in the standings.
Game #1:	Sel 4 CWK 0 Johnson tosses beautiful 4 hit shutout.
Game #2:	SEL 5 CWK 0 Not to be outdone Henderson Alvarez tosses a 5 hit shutout.
Game #3:	CWK 5 SEL 4 Mathis breaks a 4-4 tie with a big fly in the 8th to give Clovis a win.
Game #4:	SEL 2 CWK Wanting to be part of the shutout party Hammel, Howell, and Rapada combine for a 3 hit shutout.
Game #5:	CWK 2 SEL 1 With 2 out in the bottom of the ninth Reyes lines a single up the middle and steals second, Steelers walk Belt intentionally to face Dunn who rips a single over the 2nd baseman to send Reyes home with the walk off game winner.
Game #6:	SEL 4 CWK 0 Johnson tosses his second straight shutout, this time a 3 hit, 10 strikeout affair. Clovis’s offense has gone into deep freeze scoring only 7 runs in the 6 games and getting shutout 4 times.
Series Summary *	Selkirk takes 4 of 6 with all 4 wins coming via shutout. Hats off to the Selkirk pitching staff! Josh Johnson nominee for pitcher of the week; two complete game shutouts, a 4 hitter and 3 hitter with 15 strikeouts.

· Coconut Creek Crushers @ Severn Express
Series Preview	Coconut Creek comes to Severn for a 6 game series.
Series Summary *	Teams split.

· Sacramento Capitals @ Long Beach Dirt Bags
Series Summary *	Sacramento takes 5 of 6 from Long Beach

· Valdosta Snappers @ Tempe Tempers
Series Preview	Valdosta visited Tempe for six games.
Game #1:	Tempe 3-2 – Pedroia RBI single in the 6th broke a 2-2 tie.
Game #2:	Valdosta 3-0 – Carlos Zambrano did it with his arm and his bat.
Game #3:	Tempe 4-3 – Tempe ties it in the bottom of the 9th and then wins in the 10th when Punto singles in emergency pinch runner Beachy.
Game #4:	Tempe 4-0 – The Valdosta bats only managed two hits in the game. Cain left after 3.2 innings but the Tempe pen only allowed one hit in the final 6.1 innings.
Game #5:	Tempe 3-0 – The Valdosta bats stayed asleep as Beachy went 9 hit less innings for his first No-Hitter of his early career.
Game #6:	Tempe 5-1 – Chen held Valdosta to one run in five innings and then picked up the win when Tempe rallied in the bottom of the 5th. Peralta went the final three innings for the save.
Series Summary *	Tempe took five of six behind strong pitching and timely hitting. Brandon Beachy recorded 11 SO en-route to his first no-hitter. I believe this is the fourth week in a row that MWBL has seen a no hitter the 5th in Tempers franchise history.

· Dallas Cougars @ Yonge Street Stalkers
Series Preview	The Cougars visit Yonge Street with nothing but pride on the line for either squad. Not much offense expected in this get together.
Game #1:	Kyle Weiland was awesome in a spot start for the home team. David Wrights 2 run HR led the way. YSS 4 – DAL 1
Game #2:	Guthrie and Latos both went 8 and both gave up 2 runs. Bolstered by 4 scoreless innings from the pen, the home team got to Chad Gaudin in the 12th. YSS 3 – DAL 2 (12)
Game #3:	Joe Kelly outdueled Justin Germano. A pretty ugly game for DAL. They had 9 hits…all singles, grounded into 3 DP’s, and had 3 errors which made both YSS runs unearned. YSS is rolling. YSS 2 – DAL 1
Game #4:	Is it poor offense or outstanding bullpen work? There was plenty of both in this one. YSS 4 – DAL 3 (16)
Game #5:	Jason Heyward and David Wright both hit 2 HR’s and they combined to plate 8. That was enough, but not by as much as you’d think. YSS 12 – DAL 6
Game #6:	2 runs in the top of the 9th gave Papelbon a blown save and the Cougars their only win in the series. DAL 5 – YSS 4
Series Summary *	The Cougs snatch a game 6 victory to avoid the sweep. They’ll take that momentum on the road to ELY next week. YSS heads to VIR.

Series Summary *	Detroit comes to town and takes 4 of 6

· Chicago Mobsters @ Hollywood Werewolves
Series Summary *	HOL-CHI split.

· Southbend Lynx @ Fremont Cannons
Series Preview	Southbend travels into Fremont for a 6 game series hoping to solidify their hold on the AL wild card slot. The series was played using Joinme.com. Thanks to Casey for playing the series this way.
Game #1:	Southbend D.Holland vs. FRE C.Billingsley FRE gets on the board first in the 1st when Escobar 1bs, steals 2nd, and Swisher rips an rbi-1b. SBL ties it in the 2nd with a Trumbo solo-HR. In the SBL 3rd Crisp 1bs, Cedeno H&R 1b, Ludwick bbs, and Trumbo comes through with a 2-run 1b. Joyce bounces into a DP to plate another and SBL lead 4-1. The game stays that way until the FRE 8th when Viciedo 1bs, Swisher hits a 2-run HR, and Colvin follows with a solo-HR to tie the game at 4-4. In the SBL 11th P.Strop walks E.Escobar, Ludwick, Trumbo, and Joyce to give the SBL the lead, but the big blow is from Jaso who smacks a Grandslam to put the game away. FRe gets two runs off SBL Brach in the bottom half when Colvin 1bs and Phillips hits a 2-run HR. But its not enough as SBL take the first game. D.Holland is dominant for the SBL fanning 14 and only giving up 4 hits in 7.1 IP before the bullpen failed him. SBL 9, FRE 6
Game #2:	Southbend J.Niese vs. FRE R.Nolasco SBL opens the scoring in the 2nd when Lowrie 1bs, Molina reaches on Morneau’s error, Peterson 1bs to load the bases, and Crisp hits a rbi-grounder. In the SBL 3rd Trumbo 1bs and Joyce hits a 2-run HR. FRE gets two back in the 4th when Phillips reaches on Molina’s error and Viciedo launches a 2-run HR. That would be all the scoring as the pitchers take over the rest of the way. Niese holds off FRE through 6, and then Cook, Putz, and Motte close it out. FRE R.Nolasco after the 3rd holds SBL at bay to keep FRE in the game. SBL 3, FRE 2
Game #3:	Southbend S.Diamond vs. FRE R.Detwiler The SBL get out early with a run in the 1st when Cedeno 2bs and Gomes rbi-1b plates him. FRE takes the lead in the 2nd when Rosario 2bs, Gomez rbi-1b and moves to 2nd on the throw and Viciedo follows with an rbi-1b. In the SBL 5th Molina hits a solo-HR, Barmes 2bs, a Wigginton grounder moves him to 3rd, and Altuve’s sac fly make it 3-2 SBL. FRE Swisher ties it with a solo-HR in the bottom half. In the SBL 8th Crow walks Altuve and he steals 2nd, one out later Ludwick gives the SBL the lead with a 2-run HR. SBL Pesyano and Motte close out the game for the SBL. SBL 5, FRE 3
Game #4:	Southbend M.Harrison vs. FRE A.White SBL puts this one away pretty quickly with 8 runs in the first 4 innings. SBL singles FRE to death as 16 of their 21 hits are singles. M.Harrison is solid for SBL going 7.1 innings and giving uo only 3 runs. Phillips was the highlight for FRE with a 2-run HR. SBL 11, FRE 3
Game #5:	Southbend C.De Vries vs. FRE F.Garcia Best game of the series from an excitement standpoint. Both C.De Vries and F.Garcia trade scoreless innings through 5. IN the SBL 6th Crisp 1bs, steals 2nd, Altuve 1bs, and Ludwick hits ibto a DP scoring Crisp. De Vries dominates through 8 innings, fanning 8, while only giving up 4 hits. But in the FREE 9th after he fans Rosario, Phillips brings the home crowd to their feet with a solo-HR to tie the game! Ihe game goes into extra frames and in the SBL 11th Ludwick leads off with a 2b, E.Escobar lays down the bunt and reaches on a FC when Johnson can’t get Ludwick at 3rd, Peterson PRs for Ludwick, and Joyce hits a sac fly for the SBL lead. Motte then closes it out for SBL with his 32nd save. SBL 2, FRE 1
Game #6:	Southbend D.Holland vs. FRE J.Nicasio Once again Southbend puts the game away by scoring 9 runs in the first 4 innings. Wigginton is the big bat for SBL going 5-5 with 3 runs, 3 rbi, and 2 HRs. Gomes also has a big game going 4-4 with 2 runs, 2 rbi and a HR. Hollad is sold on the mound going 6 innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits, fanning 4. FRE Gomes goes 2-4 and scores both FRE runs, Ianetta is 3-3 for FRE is the losing cause. SBL 14, FRE 2 Costly win for SBL as Gomes is lost to SBL for 19 days when he was HBP.
Series Summary *	Southbend gets the sweep on the road (I’m not 100% sure, but I believe its the first road sweep in SBL history). Everything seemed to go the SBL way in the series. Tough series for Fremont.

· Pittsburgh Lumber Company @ Virginia Sluggers
Series Preview	Somebody’s going to hit with all the single-digit pitching…it wasn’t the Sluggers as the Lumber Co. lives up to its name.
Game #1:	PIT 5-1 Friedrich (a 3) spins a 4 hitter. 4 Homers by PIT – 2 by Alvarez.
Game #2:	VIR 2-1 Scherzer K’s 13 in 4-hitter. Rizzo and Pasternicky homer for both VIR runs.
Game #3:	PIT 13-10 a slugfest – 16 hits-PIT 18 for VIR. 5 Homers for PIT helps.
Game #4:	PIT 4-3 Vogelsong allows only 4 hits in 8.2 for PIT as they bang 16 hits to get their 4 runs.
Game #5:	PIT 7-4 2 homers in the 7th and one in the 8th take PIT to the win.
Game #6:	PIT 9-4 4 homers give Friedrich his 10th win.
Series Summary *	Lumber Co. turned the long ball into wins.

· New York Outlaws @ Manhattan Project
Series Summary *	Outlaws blast Manhattan, win 5 out of 6. Two games go into extra innings Two other games, single run margin.

· Columbus Explorers @ Iron City Yinzers
Series Summary *	No News out of Iron City.
