·         Jersey Nor’easters @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview

NLE leading Jersey Nor’easters (62-52) travel West to Columbus to play the NLC 2nd place team (53-61) in a match that appears perhaps a just a bit slanted toward the East Coast team.

Game #1:

– Classic pitcher’s duel where J.A. Happ carried a no-hitter into the 6th only to have it broken up by his counterpart Barry Zito. However, Happ proved invincible on this day going the distance tossing a 2 hitter with 12 Ks for the 1-0 Columbus victory. The lone run came in the 7th on a Shoppach rbi double.
WP Happ (9-9) (happy to be back in the rotation). LP Zito (11-6), only gave up 4 hits in 7 innings.

Game #2:

Another tight 1 run contest. Teams traded 2 runs early (Teixeira 2 run double in 3rd), Zimmerman 2 run HR (19) in the 4th. Jersey added single runs in the 7th and 9th (hoping for insurance). Well they needed it when Zimmerman unloaded for his 2nd HR (20) of the game in the 9th, but the Nor’easters hung on inspite of Furbush’s tough 9th inning (2 hits) winning 4-3 (another 1 run game.
WP Quintana (8-2), 6.2 innings; S Furbush (18). LP Harrell (5-14) – tough going for the team’s #1 draft pick this year.

Game #4:

This one was not close – Jersey scores 5 runs in the 6th enroute to a 9-2 blowout. Cueto (9-8) goes 8 innings, 6 hits, 7 Ks for the win. 8 of the Jersey hits were singles with Johnson getting 2 doubles and 3 rbis. Strange stat – Columbus had as many triples (2) as the Nor’easters had EXH – and Columbus also had 3 doubles – but they managed only 2 runs (5 of the 6 hits were EBH). LP Axelrod (2-3) took one for the team.

Game #5:

With the series tied, the Nor’easters were getting antsy but they persisted in this one until they got Milone to break down – and 3 Columbus errors didn’t help Milone’s chances. Jersey pulls this one out 6-3 scoring 5 runs (3 unearned) off Milone (L 11-8). Teixeira, Montero and Thames all had 2 hits – Thames were both doubles in the 13 hit attack. Capuano goes 6 innings for the win (12-9) giving up 7 hits and 3 runs.

SERIES RESULTS – the teams split the 6 game series, 3 one run thrillers, two blowouts and one “normal” game.

·         Selkirk Steelers @ Camarillo Quest

Series Preview

Another series that Camarillo must win in order to secure one of the wildcard spots.

Game #1:

Floyd tosses a 2-hit masterpiece – as everyone comes out flat with the sticks. Selkirk wins 1 to 0.

Game #2:

A Luke Scott home in the first inning gave Camarillo the lead. They held on to win 4 to 2.

Game #3:

R.A. Dickey and a few relievers combined on the 6-hit shutout. Camarillo 6 Selkirk 0.

Game #4:

Joey Votto gets a walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th to win it. Camairllo 4 Selkirk 3

Game #5:

Another extra inning game – this time Mike Aviles gets the walk off hit to win 4 to 3 in 10 inings.

Game #6:

Another close game, but Camarillo, once again, wins 5 to 4.

Series Summary *

Camarillo wins 5 out of 6, but wins most by 1 or 2 runs. It was a very close series.

·         New York Outlaws @ Clovis Wheat Kings

Series Preview

First place Outlaws head to sunny California to take on the Clovis Wheat Kings.

Game #1:

Commanding performance by Gio Gonzalez who strikes out 10 over 8 innings to improve to 14-7 on the season.

Local boy Casey McGehee, a Fresno State alum, blasts a pair of homers for 5 RBI in leading New York to an easy 10-6 win.

Game #3:

In a classic Dillon Gee outduels Jeff Samardzjia for a 1-0 Outlaw win. Rolen singled in the games only run in the 7th.

Game #4:

4-4 tie bottom of the tenth, two out, Adam Dunn decides it is time to go home and drives one out of the park for a walk off 5-4 Clovis win.

Game #5:

Hamels improves to 16-7 by pitching into the 7th followed by a trio of relievers as NY takes their 3rd game of the series 5-2.

Game #6:

Peavy and Gonzalez are brilliant, both pitched scoreless 3 hit ball, Peavy for 9 innings, Gonzalez for 10 along with a new franchise record 17 strikeouts but it was Brian LaHair who blasted a Scott Atchison pitch deep into the center field stands in the 12th for a 1-0 Outlaw victory.

New York takes 4 of 6 from Clovis in a tight series that featured a couple of old school pitching duels.

·         Long Beach Dirt Bags @ Valdosta Snappers

Series Preview

Last place Dirtbags visit the not much better Snappers in rainy south Georgia.

Game #1:

Valdosta 4-1. Kevin Correia (6-10, 4.18)) pitched 6 strong innings and the Snappers pen does the rest. Kimbrell saves # 26 and Chris Carter hit his 11th HR of the year.

Game #2:

Valdosta 9-3. The Snappers punish Ubaldo Jimenez as he allows 7 runs and the Valdosta club cruises. Phil Hughes (8-11, 3.37) struck out 11 in 8 IP. Frazier (10) and Reddick (27) homered for the Snappers.

Game #3:

Valdosta 4-2. Josh Reddick hit a 3-Run walk off HR in the bottom of the 9th to make winners of the Snappers.

Game #4:

Valdosta 4-0. Travis Wood (6-12, 3.44) tossed a nifty 3 hitter for the win.

Game #5:

Long Beach 9-1. The Dirtbags offense wakes up as they pummel the Snappers. Gomez improves to 3-0 and Middlebrooks, Nava and Moore all homered for the visitors.

Game #6:

Long Beach 3-2. Dirtbags eek out a win as they hold off the Snappers.

Series Summary *

Snappers take 4 of 6. Valdosta off to the Evil Empire next week and Long Beach plays host to Sacramento.

·         Coconut Creek Crushers @ Chicago Mobsters

Series Preview

Last place in the American League West – the Coconut Creek Crushers head into the Windy City of Chicago to face the first place American League Central – Chicago Mobsters.

Game #1:

Mitch Moreland is 3 for 5 with a HR and 2 RBI’s, Kevin Jepsen picks up his 25th save for the Crushers.
Final Score: Coconut Creek 7 – Chicago 6 (10 Innings)

Game #2:

Ervin Santana (9-11 4.76) picks up the win, Jepsen his 26th save. Craig Gentry is 3 for 5 for the Crushers.

Game #3:

Chris Sale (17-4 2.39) goes 7.1 innings, & the Chicago bullpen finishes it off. Aroldis Chapman picks up his 32nd save on the year. Dexter Fowler is the hitter of the day going 3 for 4 with a HR, 3RBI’s and 7 total bases.
Final Score: Chicago 5 – Coconut Creek 3

Game #4:

Chicago finds a pitcher they can hit in Huroki Kuroda (17-6 3.07) – (Loss). Neil Walker has a 5 RBI’s and C.C. Sabathia (18-4 3.01) picks up the win.

Game #5:

In the strangest game of the series Adam Wainwright & Fausto Carmona pair off in a 9 inning no run affair for both pitchers. Coconut Creek scores 1 in the 10th, Kevin Jepsen comes on for his 27th save.
Final Score: Coconut Creek 1 – Chicago 0 (10 Innings)

Game #6:

Josh Beckett (4-6 3.95) goes 7.2 innings, Jason Grilli & Aroldis Chapman (33rd Save) hold down the last 1.1 innings and Chicago comes away with the win and the series split.

Series Summary *

Chicago again earns a split in the weekly series. The Mobsters are not playing great ball heading down the stretch. Coconut Creek looks solid and should have a better record than they show. Next week Chicago heads West into the Lair of the Vampires of Hollywood. Coconut Creek heads further east to take on division rival Severn.

Cloyd strikes out 16, but gives up two bombs late. Verlander is his usual dominant self. Willingham continues to refuse to make an out.

The Muscle bats finally wake up, with five HRs, four of them solo shots.

Sacramento takes the series 5 games to 1.
Verlander dominated his two starts, Willingham, Youkilis, and Cano had big series for Sacramento.
Cloyd struck out 16 in a losing effort for Motor City, Trout and Sanchez had decent series.

VIR 11-2 W-Cahill (9-10) L-Harrison (11-9) A six run 1st gave VIR a lead they coasted with. 18 hits VIR with all starters getting at least one.

Game #2:

SBL 7-0 W- Niese (12-5) L-Scherzer (12-7) Niese with a CG 4-hit shutout. Morse had 2 hits 3 RBI and a long ball.

Game #3:

SBL 7-2 W-Diamond (12-7) L-Lyles (7-10) Morse, Gomes, and Trumbo accounted for 7 of the 12 hits, 6 of the 7 RBI’s and all 3 homers.

Game #4:

SBL 8-4 W-Putz (4-2) L-Garcia (8-9) VIR pitching couldn’t hold the lead. Up 4-1 after 5 VIR allowed SBL to score 7 runs in the last 4, aided by homers from Crisp and Ludwick.

Game #5:

VIR 2-1 W-Soriano (3-1) L- Pestano (4-4) VIR steals one from SBL. Leading 1-0 on a Lowrie RBI, Pestano gave up an 8th inning 2-run blast to A.Ramirez and Sorian was lights out.

Game #6:

SBL 3-2 W-Cook (5-3) L-Archer (1-2) Stanton’s 27th homer in the 1st gave VIR the lead. SBL’s Altuve countered in the 3rd with his own 2-run blast. It stayed that way until Joyce sent one deep over the wall against Archer in the 8th. That ended up the game winner and gave SBL the series.
