Series Summary * | At the halfway point of his 2nd year Dallas Owner/GM/Manager Jackson answered some media questions.
What can you say to fans who feel this team is worse than before the move to Dallas? When I took over this team and moved them to Dallas there were a lot of old players with very few bright spots on the team. The pitchers we had who were healthy just weren’t very good. Our building was crumbling. Some might say it should have been condemned. The first thing we had to do was repair the foundation. In baseball your foundation is your starting pitching. So we decided to trade what assets we did have to acquire draft picks and young players to try to achieve that goal. We’re not seeing any improvement yet, but we feel our pitchers are coming along nicely and we hope see their hard work pay off soon maybe not this season, but definitely by 2014. Dallas appears to have the worst offense in the MWBL. Is there any light at the end of tunnel? Our hitters are pressing a bit right now. Frankly some of them are trying to do more than they’re able to do. That’s why there are lots of strikeouts. We’re preaching patience, but sometimes when you have a certain mindset it takes some time to change that mindset. We look for our young hitters to continue working hard striving to improve every day not just during the season but also during the off season as well. We want them to take on this new mental approach 24/7 365 days a year. Do you prefer Sabermatrics over the old school of baseball thought? There’s no single way to be successful in baseball. Sometimes the old adage that says if it ain’t broke don’t fix it is true. Nothing wrong with relying on the old standards to be successful however the good teams know they have to implement new strategies to be competitive in today’s MWBL. I feel there has to be a balance. If you rely too much on way of thinking you can be blinded to what the other view is trying to tell you. For example when we prepare for the draft we don’t just rely on what our coaches and scouts tell us we also take into account what some of the draft gurus have to say. There are a lot of smart baseball people out there. It would be foolish to ignore what they say regarding prospects. In that same light you can’t just rely on a single draft expert. I mean Jonathan Mustard is one of the best baseball draft guys I know, but if we only listen to what he has to say we may miss a key piece of information someone else may be able to share on a player. |

Two 1st place teams face off as Jersey travels west to SacTown. |
Game #1: |
Jersey strikes first on a Brett Morel RBI double in the top of the 2nd, but Nelson ties it up in the bottom of the 5th and Cano promptly follows up game-tying single with an RBI double to give Sacramento the lead. Brandon Snyder adds two insurance runs on a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the 8th off Furbush. Cliff Lee improves to 12-2; Zito loses just his 2nd all season, and now stands at 9-2; and McGee picks up his 12th save of the season. |
Game #2: |
A gem of a pitchers’ duel. McPherson v. Verlander. Both would leave the game without giving up a run; the former going 9 scoreless and the latter 6. The only run came off a 2-out Robinson Cano walk-off single in bottom of the 10th. Uehara earns his first win on the season, while Jones drops to 1-3. |
Game #3: |
Wieland v. Lilly. Sacramento struck first with a leadoff home run by Chris Nelson, and Josh Willingham added to the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the 4th. But, Sacramento would see their lead vanish in the top of the 6th with a game-tying double from Escobar. Sacramento bats, while relatively quiet of late, are still clutch. Torii Hunter, coming in off the bench, knocks a game-winning, pinch hit, walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th. Uehara earns his 2nd win while Furbush evens up at 3-3. |
Game #4: |
Capuano v. Bedard. Jersey’s had enough, and busts out with an 3-run 1st. Bedard settles down, giving up only one more run through 6. But the story of the game was Capuano, who took a no-hitter into the 7th, and ended up pitching a complete game, 2-hit shutout. Bedard drops to 4-2 and Capuano improves to 6-8. |
Game #5: |
Cueto v. Lee. A pitchers duel, at least through 5. Cueto gives up 4 runs behind Willingham’s 19th home run of the year in the bottom of the 6th, giving Sacramento a 4-0 lead. That would be all Sacramento would need. Cueto drops to 6-7; Lee improves to 13-2; and McGee picks up his 13th save. |
Game #6: |
Quintana v. Verlander. Another shutout for Jersey. Quintana pitches a complete game gem, and Teixeira and Choo give all the run support he would need with two home runs and 3 RBI between the two. Quintana improves to 5-2, and Verlander earns his 5th loss on the season. |
Series Summary * | We have a new 1st-place team in the NL East: the Outlaws. Sacramento takes the series 4-2, outscoring Jersey by one run: Sacramento with 12 and Jersey with 11. It was close, and two walk-off hits by Sacramento proved to be the difference.
Sacramento’s offense continues to slow down, averaging just over 3 runs per game in its 12-game home stand. But, Sacramento’s pitching continues to hold, also averaging 3 runs per game, keeping Sacramento in each game. As the first half of the season wraps up, Sacramento is seeing some pretty surprising stats thus far. Some good, and some ugly. The good: Sacramento’s bullpen. Sacramento’s bullpen has been incredible thus far, going 25-4 with 33 saves and a 2.07 ERA in 300 innings–helping Sacramento to a 22-8 record in 1-run games and a 10-1 record in extra innings. The Ugly: Josh Willingham. Despite his team-leading 19 HRs and respectable 45 RBI, his .199 AVG. and 12 ERRORS in left field (nearly 25% of Sacramento’s errors) are costing Sacramento dearly. |
