Columbus

Explorers

SERIES PREVIEW – The stage is set for a high-stakes 7-game Wild Card clash as the Columbus Explorers host the Alamo Defenders. Operating under a 2-3-2 format, Columbus holds home-field advantage for Games 1, 2, 6, and 7. Both clubs boast complete rosters that can grind out low-scoring duels or break games open with sudden power, making depth and late-inning execution the series’ focal points.

Key storylines to watch:

Starting Rotation Depth: Columbus relies on steady front-line starter Nathan Eovaldi to set the tempo early, while Alamo counters with the big-time arm of Nick Pivetta. Alamo probably has a slight edge, but the Columbus bullpen has more depth to cover the starters.

Middle-of-the-Order Power: The Defenders pack punch with key bats like Rafael Devers and Taylor Ward, whereas Columbus counters with dangerous situational hitters like Ty France and Trent Grisham.

Bench & Bullpen Strategy: Late-inning defensive replacements and bullpen management will be critical during the crucial middle stretch of the series at Alamo. Columbus likes to feature run-and-gun, and Trevino and Bailey will have their arms tested. How long will the starters last? Expect extensive bullpen use.

GAME #1 – Joe Ryan 16-10  (2.66) vs. Nathan Eovaldi 14-4  (1.60)

Eovaldi, France Drive Explorers Past Defenders in Game 1

COLUMBUS, OH — Veteran right-hander Nathan Eovaldi delivered a masterclass on the mound, and first baseman Ty France provided the decisive blow with a two-run homer as the Columbus Explorers topped the Alamo Defenders 3–0 in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series on Sunday afternoon.

Eovaldi was dominant over 7.1 shutout innings, scattering four hits, walking two, and striking out five to earn the victory (1-0). The Explorers’ bullpen closed the door seamlessly, with Steven Okert recording two strikeouts in relief and Bennett Sousa navigating the ninth to secure the shutout.

Columbus struck first in the bottom of the third inning when center fielder Trent Grisham launched a solo home run (1) off Alamo starter Joe Ryan, putting the home crowd on its feet and giving Columbus a 1–0 edge.

The game turned drastically in the bottom of the sixth. After Jake McCarthy entered as a pinch runner for Jordan Beck, France stepped to the plate against Ryan with one out and crushed a two-run home run (1) to deep left field, extending the Explorers’ lead to 3–0. The blast chased Ryan from the game; he finished with three earned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings, taking the loss (0-1).

Alamo threatened late in the top of the ninth when Taylor Ward doubled to right-center off Sousa with one out. However, Sousa retired the next two batters on a flyout and an inning-ending fly ball to left field by Carlos Santana to freeze the runner and seal the victory.

The lone dark spot for Columbus came in the bottom of the first inning when second baseman Adam Frazier was struck on the elbow by a Joe Ryan pitch. Frazier left the game in significant pain and is expected to miss five days. Chase Meidroth took over second-base duties for the remainder of the contest.

With the victory, Columbus takes a 1–0 lead in the best-of-seven series heading into Game 2.

COL 3 – ALA 0

Win: Nathan Eovaldi 1-0  (0.00)
Loss: Joe Ryan 0-1  (5.06)

GAME #2 – Pablo Lopez 4-6  (4.29) vs. Shane Smith 15-9  (3.63)

Beck’s Big Afternoon Powers Explorers Past Defenders for 2–0 Series Lead
COLUMBUS, OH — Right fielder Jordan Beck delivered a monster performance at the plate, driving in three runs and finishing a home run shy of the cycle as the Columbus Explorers rallied to defeat the Alamo Defenders 8–4 in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series on Monday afternoon. With the victory, Columbus defends home field and takes a commanding 2–0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Columbus starter Shane Smith (1-0) earned the win after navigating 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five. Alamo starter Pablo Lopez (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits over four-plus innings.

After two scoreless frames to open the contest, Alamo jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the top of the third inning. Ezequiel Tovar ignited the rally with a triple and scored on a Luis Rengifo single. A wild pitch by Smith and a sacrifice fly from Rafael Devers pushed two more across to put the Defenders in front early.

Columbus answered back immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Nathan Lukes slapped an RBI double to cut the deficit to 3–1 before Beck delivered the swing of the afternoon—a booming two-run triple off the left-field wall to clear the bases and knot the game at 3–3. Alamo briefly reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Jake Cronenworth, but the Explorers’ bats erupted in the bottom of the fifth for a decisive four-run frame. Lukes sparked the surge with his second RBI double of the day off Lopez, chasing the Alamo starter. Reliever Jakob Junis fared no better, yielding an RBI double to Beck, an RBI single to Jared Triolo, and an RBI single to Luis Torrens as Columbus surged ahead 7–4. Dansby Swanson added an insurance RBI single in the sixth to make it 8–4, giving the Columbus bullpen more than enough cushion.

The Explorers’ relief corps locked down the final 3.2 innings, allowing zero earned runs. Shelby Miller, Brennan Bernardino, Andrew Kittredge, and Robert Garcia combined to bridge the gap to Abner Uribe, who closed out the ninth inning to seal the victory.

The series now shifts to Alamo for Game 3, where the Defenders will look to defend their home turf and avoid a 3–0 deficit.

COL 8 – ALA 4

Win: Shane Smith  1-0  (6.75)
Loss: Pablo Lopez 0-1  (11.25

GAME #3 – Clarke Schmidt 5-2  (3.23) vs. Nick Pivetta 11-11  (2.97)

Pivetta, Devers Power Defenders to 6–3 Win in Game 3
SAN ANTONIO, TX — Nick Pivetta delivered a brilliant complete-game gem, and designated hitter Rafael Devers provided the offensive fireworks as the Alamo Defenders secured a 6–3 victory over the Columbus Explorers in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series on Wednesday afternoon. With the win on their home turf, the Defenders cut Columbus’s series lead to 2–1 in the best-of-seven matchup.

Pivetta was the star of the afternoon for Alamo, going the full nine innings and tossing a dominant five-hitter. The right-hander struck out seven batters, did not issue a single walk, and faced pressure from the Columbus lineup to earn his first victory of the postseason.

Columbus struck early in the top of the first inning when Trent Grisham launched a solo home run (2), giving the visiting Explorers a quick 1–0 lead. However, Pivetta quickly settled into a rhythm, keeping Columbus off the scoreboard for the next five frames.

The game turned completely in the bottom of the third against Columbus starter Clarke Schmidt. Alamo got two runners on for Devers, who crushed a three-run homer (1) to turn the deficit into a lead. Carlos Santana followed shortly after with a two-run double of his own, capping off an explosive five-run third inning that put the Defenders on top 5–1 and chased Schmidt from the mound after just 2.2 innings.

Devers padded Alamo’s cushion in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double off reliever Andrew Kittredge to extend the lead to 6–1. Devers finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Santana added a 2-for-4 effort with two RBIs.

The Explorers mounted a slight rally in the top of the seventh when Dansby Swanson hit a two-run homer (1) to pull Columbus within three at 6–3. But Pivetta proved unreachable from there, retiring the final six batters in order in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the complete-game victory.

The series remains at Alamo for Game 4, where the Defenders will look to even the series at two wins apiece, while Columbus tries to put itself on the brink of advancement.

ALA 6 – COL 3

Win: Nick Pivetta 1-0  (3.00)
Loss: Clarke Schmidt 0-1  (16.88)

GAME #4 – Brayan Bello 8-10  (4.46) vs. Luis M. Castillo 10-13  (#3.68)

Beck’s Extra-Inning Blast Elevates Explorers Over Defenders in 10-Inning Pitchers’ Duel
SAN ANTONIO, TX — In an instant-classic pitcher’s duel that required extra innings to decide, Jordan Beck broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 10th inning with a dramatic solo home run (1) to lift the Columbus Explorers to a 1–0 victory over the Alamo Defenders on Thursday afternoon. With the hard-fought win, Columbus takes a 3–1 series lead in the Wild Card Series, putting them just one win away from advancing.

Both starting pitchers were immaculate, staging an old-fashioned duel that kept fans on the edge of their seats through nine scoreless frames. Alamo’s Luis M. Castillo delivered a masterpiece, pitching nine shutout innings while allowing just four hits, striking out six, and walking two. Columbus starter Brayan Bello was equally brilliant, firing seven scoreless frames of two-hit baseball with three strikeouts and a walk.

With neither offense able to crack the scoreboard in regulation, the game turned to the bullpens in the 10th. Abner Uribe, who came in in the 8th, took over for Columbus and pitched three dominant, hitless innings of relief, striking out three to ultimately earn the victory (1-0).

The decisive moment came in the top of the 10th against Alamo reliever Kolby Allard. Leading off the 10th, Chase Meidroth walked but was thrown out attempting to steal 2nd. Then up stepped Beck, leading off the inning, and he drove a pitch deep over the wall for a solo home run—his first of the series—giving Columbus the long-awaited 1–0 lead. Dansby Swanson followed with a single, but Allard managed to limit further damage to keep it a one-run ballgame.

Alamo attempted to construct a two-out rally in the bottom of the 10th when Gavin Lux entered as a pinch hitter with Jake Fraley on first, but Uribe quickly shut the door with a whiff, sealing the extra-inning victory for Columbus.

The Explorers finished with six hits on the day, led by multi-hit performances from Beck (2-for-4, HR, RBI) and Swanson (2-for-4, 2B). Alamo’s offense was limited to just two hits overall—singles by Jake Mangum and Jake Cronenworth.

The series remains at Alamo for Game 5, where the Defenders will face elimination on their home field, while Columbus looks to clinch the series victory.

GAME #5 – Nathan Eovaldi 14-4  (1.60) vs. Joe Ryan 16-10  (2.66)

Straw’s Walk-Off Single Keeps Defenders Alive, Forces Series Back to Columbus
SAN ANTONIO, TX — Pinch-hitter Myles Straw delivered the dramatic moment Alamo desperately needed, lining a game-winning walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Defenders a 4–3 victory over the Columbus Explorers in Game 5 on Friday afternoon. The win staved off elimination on Alamo’s home field, halting Columbus’s attempt to celebrate on away turf and trimming the Explorers’ series lead to 3–2 as the Wild Card Series heads back to Columbus for Game 6.

Alamo struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Jake Cronenworth hit a solo home run (1). Ezequiel Tovar added another solo shot in the second frame (1), and Rafael Devers drove in a third run with a sacrifice fly in the third to give the Defenders an early 3–2 advantage.

Columbus went into scoring mode on the power of another Trent Grisham homer (3), when he slugged a two-run shot in the top of the third inning to take the lead. After Alamo regained the lead in the bottom of the 3rd, Ty France later leveled the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to score Pedro Pages, tying the contest at 3–3.

Both starting pitchers provided solid length. Alamo’s Joe Ryan allowed three earned runs on four hits across seven innings of work, striking out four. Columbus starter Nathan Eovaldi surrendered three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings, striking out three.

The game remained locked at 3–3 until the bottom of the ninth inning against Columbus relievers Shelby Miller (1.1 IP) and Steven Okert (1.2) ip. Jose Trevino got the rally started with a double and advanced 3rd with 2 outs, setting up Straw to step up as a pinch hitter for Gavin Lux. Straw drove Okert’s delivery into the outfield to score the winning run, sending the Alamo home crowd into a frenzy and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Alamo reliever Cam Gibson (1-0) picked up the win after pitching two scoreless, hitless innings in relief. Okert (0-1) took the loss for Columbus.

With the series now standing at 3–2 in favor of Columbus, the 7-game series shifts back to Columbus for Game 6.

Late-Inning Rally Elevates Explorers to Wild Card Series Victory
COLUMBUS, OH — Nathan Lukes delivered a game-tying RBI double, and Jordan Beck hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in a wild two-run eighth inning, propelling the Columbus Explorers to a thrilling 4–3 comeback win over the Alamo Defenders in Game 6 on Sunday afternoon. Alamo wasted no time taking control early. In the top of the first inning, Rafael Devers crushed a two-run home run (2) into the right-field corner off Columbus starter Shane Smith to give the Defenders a 2–0 lead. Alamo extended its cushion to 3–0 in the third when Gavin Lux lined an RBI single over second base, scoring Jake Cronenworth.

Columbus began its long climb back in the bottom of the third frame when Trent Grisham launched a solo home run (his 4th of the series) off Alamo starter Pablo Lopez, cutting the deficit to 3–1. Lopez kept the Explorers contained otherwise, tossing 5.2 innings of two-run ball before handing the game off to the bullpen.

The Explorers pulled within one in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Adam Frazier singled (back from the game 1 injury), Jordan Beck drove him in with an RBI single to right, trimming Alamo’s lead to 3–2.

The defining rally arrived in the bottom of the eighth against Defenders reliever Kolby Allard. Grisham led off with a walk and was immediately replaced by pinch-runner Jake McCarthy. After McCarthy stole second base, Lukes lined an RBI double off the left-center field wall to drive him home and tie the game at 3–3. Lukes advanced to third on a groundout, setting up Beck, who lifted a fly ball into right field just deep enough to allow Lukes to slide home safely with the go-ahead run.

Reliever Steven Okert earned the victory (1-1) for Columbus after striking out both batters he faced in the eighth, while Abner Uribe came on in the ninth to record a 1-2-3 inning for the save (1), sealing the series victory. Allard took the loss (0-2) for Alamo.

SERIES SUMMARY – Columbus Outlasts Alamo in 6-Game Thriller

The Wild Card Series between the Columbus Explorers and the Alamo Defenders delivered high drama, tactical battles, and exceptional pitching over six tight contests, culminating in Columbus taking the series 4–2.

The series opened in Columbus, where the Explorers set the tone early by taking Games 1 and 2, behind an explosive offensive output in Game 2 led by Jordan Beck‘s three-RBI performance. Shifted to Alamo for Games 3 through 5, the Defenders fought back. Nick Pivetta pitched a complete-game gem in Game 3 to get Alamo on the board, but Columbus responded in Game 4 with an extra-inning masterpiece—a 10-inning 1–0 duel decided by Beck’s 10th-inning home run.

Alamo refused to go quietly in Game 5, staving off elimination via Myles Straw’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to send the series back to Columbus. However, the Explorers’ eighth-inning heroics in Game 6 proved to be the final blow.

Quotes from the Dugout
Bill Schindel, Columbus Explorers Manager:
“This series tested every inch of our roster. Alamo never gave us a free night—they fought back in San Antonio and made us earn every single out. That eighth inning in Game 6 showed the grit this club has built all season. When Jake [McCarthy] stole second, and Nathan [Lukes] came through with that double, you could feel the energy in the whole dugout shift. I couldn’t be prouder of how our guys responded under pressure.
Hats off to the Defenders and Mike Lassman for a great season and a very tough playoff series!

Jordan Beck, Explorers Outfielder:
“You live for these kinds of moments. In Game 4 with the homer in the 10th, and then just getting a ball deep enough in Game 6 to get Nathan home—it’s all about doing your job when your team needs it most. Alamo pitched us tough all week, but we just kept grinding out at-bats.”

Mike Lassman, Alamo Defenders Manager:
“It’s a tough pill to swallow because our guys gave everything they had out there. Nick [Pivetta] set the blueprint in Game 3, and Luis [Castillo] gave us a heroic effort in Game 4. We fought back from 2–0 down to extend this series, but credit to Columbus—they capitalized on the small moments when it mattered most in Game 6.”

Rafael Devers, Defenders Designated Hitter:
“We fought as hard as we could. When Myles [Straw] got that hit in Game 5, we really believed we were going to bring this all the way back to Game 7. It hurts to come up short, but Columbus played great baseball when the game was on the line.”
