Virginia  Sluggers @ Dallas  Cougars

Summary: After a good two week start to the season the Cougars come back down to earth getting swept by Virginia.

Selkirk  Steelers @ Tempe  Tempers

Preview: Tempe hosted division rival Selkirk and their red hot offense for seven games. On extremely rare occasions, everything seems to just goes perfectly no matter what you do. This was one of those series with game five being absolutely nutty.
Game #1: Fried vs. Verlander
A Semien rbi single in 3rd put Selkirk up early. A wild pitch and a throwing error on Turner tied it up to start the 5th. Fried seemed rattled and walked the bases loaded. Tonkin then came on and walked JD martinez to give Tempe the 2-1 lead. Tonkin was able to K Bogaerts, but Albies got his third hit of the game to make 4-1. All four runs being unearned. Gray went 7 strong innings for the win. Munoz picked up the save.
Tempe 4-1
W – Gray, L Fried, S – Munoz
Game #2: Cease vs. Verlander
Tempe scored one in the 2nd on a Kwan rbi single, but missed out on the big inning when Cease popped up Freeman with bases loaded. Ozuna knocked a two run homer off Cease in the 6th for the only other runs of the game. Verlander tossed seven shutout innings. Munoz picked his second save of the series.
Tempe 3-0
W – Verlander, L – Cease, S – Munoz
Game #3: Gibson vs. Woodruff
Woodruff made his first start as a Temper and looked sharp. Back to back HBP from Gibson allowed the first run of the game in the 2nd, but Gibson recovered to get Ramirez to ground out with bases loaded. Ozuna and Bogearts homered n the 3rd as Tempe added three runs. Tempe added five more in the 8th and Selkirk also added a few in the 9th. Woodruff tossed 6.2 scoreless innings in his Tempe debut for the win.
Tempe 9-4
W – Woodruff, L – Gibson
Game #4: Nelson vs. Maeda
Nelson’s first pitch of game bounced off Freeman’s shin and knocked him out of the game. Ozuna rbi single made it 1-0 after one. Tempe added two more in the 2nd on hits from Albies and Martinez. Betts two run shot in the 3rd made it a one run game. Maeda surrended two hits to start the 5th, but Braiser limited the damage to just a sac fly by Turner that tied it at 3-3. Peralta rbi single in 6th knocked out Nelson and gave Tempe the lead for good. Minter came on to strike out two in the 9th to close it out.
Tempe 4-3
W – Braiser, L Nelson, S – Minter
Game #5: Anderson vs. Gray
Selkirk got on the board in the first after back to back singles by Betts and Turner. A Betts solo in 3rd and an Alonso rbi double made it 3-0. Tempe finally got on the board in the 7th after a Freeman triple and an error on Turner. Anderson recorded 12 SO and left after 7.2 innings. Selkirk added one more in the 9th to go up 4-1. With two on and two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Bogaerts took Kimbrel deep to tie it up 4-4. The score remained tied 4-4 until the 12th when Tempe ran out of pitching. A tiring Minter gave up two runs and had two runners on base when Tempe was forced to pull him to avoid injury. Backup Shortsop, Maeto was able to strikeout Garcia to end the inning. In the bottom of the 12th, Bogaerts walked, Albies popped out and Realmuto got an infield hit to put runners at 1B and 2B. Palacios came on as a pinch hitter and slugged a RBI double. Tempe held the runner at 3B to play for the win with no pitching left. The next batter Fletcher grounded to short, but Mclain made an incredible play to get Realmuto at home to preserve the one run lead. With two outs and runners on the corners, Freeman blooped a broken bat single to tie it. 6-6. In the top of the 13th, Mateo walked the first batter Alonso but then got Carlson to pop up. Dubon singled to put runners on 2nd and 1st with one out. Tempe called on their final player on the bench, catcher Yan Gomes to pitch to Rodriguez. Gomes miraculously got Rodriguez to ground into an inning ending double play. In the bottom of the 13th, Iglesias got the first two outs before walking Bogerts. Cuas came on to face Albies and gave up a double to right field that allowed the speedy Boagerts to come all the way from first base to score the winning run. Catcher Yan Gomes picked up his first and most likely only win of his career.
Tempe 7-6 13 INN
W – Gomes, L – Iglesias
Game #6: Fried vs. Verlander
Betts lead off with a solo homerun off Verlander in the first. In the 2nd, Tempe got on the board after Bogaerts walked, stole second and came home on a Realmuto double. Slater then singled in Realmuto. Two more singles from Kwan and Freeman made it 3-1. Freeman added another RBI in the 4th to make it 4-1. Another Betts solo shot in the 8th off Verlander made it 4-2. Verlander was able to finish the 8th without any further damage. Brasier pitched a perfect 9th for his first save of the year.
Tempe 4-2
W – Verlander, L Fried, S – Braiser
Game #7: Cease vs. Woodruff
Cease pitched out of a, runners on the corners with no outs, jam in the first. Both pitchers had shutouts going until the 5th when rookie Palacios took Cease deep for the first run of the game. Tempe loaded the bases in the 6th with two out but Baker got pinch hitter Noda to strikeout. Garcia solo shot in the 7th tied it up and a Dubon solo in 8th put Selkirk up 2-1. Woodruff finished the 8th with his 11th strikeout of the game. In the bottom of the 8th, Ramirez walked and stole 2B. Slater then walked. Rookie Bouchard came on as a pinch hitter and crushed a three run blast to center. Bogaerts doubled, Albies walked and back to back doubles from Realmuto and Mateo made it 7-2. Jimenez pitched a quiet 9th as Tempe completed the surprising sweep.
Tempe 7-2
W – Woodruff, L – Loaisiga
Summary: I’m still not sure how we won game five, but we’ll take it. A Yan Gomes bobble head night has been added to the schedule. Offseason acquisitions Gray and Woodruff looked strong and Verlander bounced back to pick up two more wins as he inches closer to Sabathia.

Baltimore  Comets @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Preview: Baltimore visits Bethesda for three games in the early morning hours of the 2024 season.
Game #1: The Bandicoots manhandle starting pitcher Gavin Stone and reliever Alex Young, homering three times in an easy 9-1 win. Alex Cobb (1-2) got his first decent start of the season and allowed just one run on five hits through seven innings while Stone fell to 0-1. Andrew Vaughn (1), Nick Castellanos (7) and even poor pathetic Paul DeJong (1) homered for Bethesda. DeJong actually had a rare two-hit game and drove in 5 runs in the game.
Game #2: George Kirby fanned 13 and held the Comets to just three hits in a 2-0 Bethesda win. TJ Friedl, Shea Langeliers and Jake Meyers each had two hits for Bethesda.
Game #3: The Bandicoots chased Miles Mikolas early thanks to five runs in the first three innings and then went to sleep but thankfully for a solid performance by Merrilll Kelly the Comets could get little to nothing going and fell for the third straight game 5-1. Trevor Larnach (2) got the lone run for the Comets thanks to a gargantuan blast off Kelly (3-0) in the 7th inning. The Bandicoots only had one extrabase hit in the game, but bunched all of their hitting in the early going with Jose Siri leading the way with a single and a double and two RBIs.
Game #4: The Comets enjoyed the one-day rest in the middle of the series and beat around Reid Detmers good and were up to a 4-0 lead by the 6th inning. Hunter Renfroe and Jorge Polanco each had a pair of hits for the winners while Shea Langeliers smacked a 2-run homer in the three-run 9th that made the game closer than it appeared.
Game #5: Dakota Hudson was a juggernaut on the mound for Baltimore and improved to 3-1 with a 3-1 win over Bethesda. Garcia did the bulk of the damage at the plate with a two-run double in the 5th inning for the Comets. Pavin Smith and Shea Langeliers each had two hits in the game on the losing end.
Game #6: Jake Meyers, Tyler Fitzgerald, and Yu Chang all homered and George Kirby tossed five shutout innings as the Bandicoots turned things around in the series to win 7-0. Kirby gave up just one hit and fanned six without walking a batter while improving to 4-1. Harold Ramirez had three hits for the Comets as did Tyler Fitzgerald for the Bandicoots.
Summary: Bethesda snags 4 of 6 from Baltimore and makes a slow move upwards in the division.

Arboga  Rats @ Long Beach  Dirt Bags

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Chicago  Mobsters

Preview: The Chicago Mobsters boast a formidable offense capable of keeping opposing teams on their heels. Their prowess at the plate is complemented by exceptional relief pitching, ensuring any leads are well-protected as games progress into the later innings. On the other hand, the Tijuana Bottle Rockets impress with a strong starting rotation that sets the tone early in games. Their bullpen provides solid support, while the team’s core of talented young players signals the rise of an exciting franchise built for long-term success. Both teams enter the season with high expectations and the potential to dominate the league.
Game #1: The game showcased of strong pitching and defensive plays from both teams, with some pivotal moments that dictated the outcome. Starting pitcher Spencer Strider put on an impressive display for the Bottle Rockets, racking up 9 strikeouts through his 6 innings of work. Unfortunately for the Bottle Rockets, they suffered a setback when their shortstop Wander Franco was injured, sidelining him for 5 days. This incident could potentially impact the team’s upcoming games & future.

One of the highlights of the Mobsters was Aroldis Chapman‘s entrance in relief. He delivered 2 and 1/3 innings of perfect pitching with no hits or walks allowed, striking out 5 batters in the process. His performance ensured that the Bottle Rockets were kept at bay and helped secure the victory for the Mobsters.

Despite the efforts from the Bottle Rockets, they couldn’t match up to the dominant Mobsters offense who finalized the game with a secure 6-1 win. The injury to Franco and the inability to break through staring pitcher Brennan Bernardino or the Mobster’s bullpen were significant factors in their defeat.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Tijuana 1

Win: Nick Ramirez 1-0 (0.00)
Loss: Spencer Strider 2-1 (1.89)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #3

Game #2: In today’s matchup, the Mobsters secured an 8-4 victory over the Bottle Rockets, backed by a powerful offensive display that included three home runs. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 2nd inning when the Mobsters rallied to take a 4-0 lead. Their momentum continued with Gabriel Moreno‘s solo homer in the fourth to widen the gap. It was Yordan Alvarez who delivered a crushing blow later in the same frame, hammering a two-run shot that extended the lead to 7-1. The Mobsters’ final home run came from Riley Greene in the fifth, making it 8-1 at that point. Although the Bottle Rockets managed to put a few runs on the board, including Ke’Bryan Hayes’ sixth-inning two-run homer, they ultimately fell short, as the Mobsters’ early onslaught proved insurmountable.

Final Score: Chicago 8 – Tijuana 4

Win: Jesus Luzardo 2-1 (2.48)
Loss: Eury Perez 0-2 (15.43)

Game #3: In a tightly contested ballgame, the Bottle Rockets secured a narrow 2-1 victory over the Mobsters. The game’s pivotal moment came in the top of the second inning when Elehuris Montero launched a solo home run to break the deadlock. The score remained 1-0 until the seventh inning when Evan Carter added another home run to double the lead. Randy Vasquez put up a solid pitching performance for the Mobsters despite the loss, while Cristopher Sanchez aimed to keep the Bottle Rockets at bay. Tensions peaked in the bottom of the ninth as the Mobsters scored a run and loaded the bases, only for Noelvi Marte to strike out, leaving the potential winning runs stranded and securing the win for the Bottle Rockets.

Final Score: Tijuana 2 – Chicago 1

Win: Cristopher Sanchez 1-0 (3.14)
Loss: Randy Vasquez 0-1 (2.84)
Save: Miguel Diaz #1

Game #4: The Mobsters dominated the Bottle Rockets with a robust 7-0 victory, underscored by a sensational shutout from J.P. Sears, his 2nd of the year. Sears was in command throughout, racking up nine strikeouts and silencing the opposition’s bats effectively. Offensive support came early as the Mobsters scored in the bottom of the first and continued to apply pressure, featuring notable back-to-back homers in the 5th inning from L. Arraez and Y. Alvarez, extending the lead to an insurmountable 6-0. Luis Arraez particularly shone, securing three hits including a home run that solidified the Mobsters’ advantage. The Bottle Rockets’ attempts to rally were futile against Sears’ prowess on the mound, ensuring a clean sheet for the Mobsters and sealing a victory marked by dominant pitching and explosive batting.

Final Score: Chicago 7 – Tijuana 0

Win: J.P. Sears 2-2 (3.00)
Loss: Marcus Stroman 1-1 (5.09)

Game #5: In an epic marathon that lasted 16 innings, the Mobsters walked off with a victory against the Bottle Rockets in a dramatic and tense 6-5 finish. This game’s tale was largely about the bullpens of both teams which were put to the test as they tried to contain the offenses.

The Mobsters’ relief corps was called into action early when starter Jose Quintana surrendered 5 runs over five and two-thirds innings. The bullpen was a mixed bag but did enough to stay in the game, featuring a standout performance by Josh Hader who hurled two and a third innings without giving up a hit and striking out three. Yennier Cano also contributed critical innings, stretching through the 15th and he played a key part in keeping the Bottle Rockets at bay.

Conversely, the Bottle Rockets’ bullpen had its hands full after Grayson Rodriguez gave up 3 runs over five and a third innings. The relievers found themselves trying to protect a slim lead for much of the game. Standouts included Lucas. Sims pitched two and two-thirds innings of hitless ball. Steven Wilson also put in three scoreless innings, showing poise under pressure despite the high-stakes scenario.

Big moments in the game included some clutch hitting by the Bottle Rockets early on, which saw them take a 5-1 lead thanks to RBI singles from Garrett. Hampson and Elehuris Montero, with Isiah Kiner-Falefa adding a solo home run. However, the Mobsters clawed back with Willy Adames delivering a pivotal two-run homer that narrowed the gap to 5-3.

As the innings progressed, both teams’ defenses and pitching held steady until Noelvi Marte finally broke the deadlock in the bottom of the 16th inning with a walk-off home run, allowing the Mobsters to claim a 6-5 victory in what was a thrilling showcase of stamina and strategy from both teams’ bullpens.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Tijuana 5 (16 Innings)

Win: Yennier Cano 1-1 (4.50)
Loss: Erik Swanson 0-2 (5.00)

Game #6: The Bottle Rockets faced the Mobsters in what turned out to be a rollercoaster of a game. Initially, the first few innings were marked by strong pitching and defense as both teams failed to score. The Bottle Rockets broke the deadlock in the top of the 3rd with Isiah Kiner-Falefa scoring after a daring play, taking the lead 1-0. The Mobsters retaliated quickly, tying it at 1-1 in their half of the inning thanks to Luis Arraez‘s base hit.

As the game progressed, the Mobsters gained a 3-1 lead by capitalizing on mistakes by Spencer Strider, the Bottle Rockets’ pitcher, and stretched that lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the 6th. It looked like the Mobsters had secured a comfortable win.

However, in an astonishing turn of events, the Bottle Rockets mounted a comeback in the 9th inning, highlighted by Garrett Hampson‘s three-run homer to even up the score at 5-5. Despite this, Alex Bregman became the hero for the Mobsters with his walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th, leaving the final score at Mobsters 6, Bottle Rockets 5.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Tijuana 5 (10 Innings)

Win: Devin Williams 2-0 (0.00)
Loss: Jeff Hoffman 0-1 (7.71)

Game #7: In an exhilarating match, the Bottle Rockets took an early lead against the Mobsters, starting with a triple from Corbin Carroll who later scored on Evan Carter‘s blooper. The Mobsters displayed some strong defense with McCarthy’s catch in right field preventing further scores. Despite trailing, the Mobsters threatened with Alvarez reaching base for the 14th straight game and nearly scoring off Julio Rodriguez’s hit, only to be tagged out at home plate.

Heading into the second inning at 1-0, the Bottle Rockets maintained their lead, with Cedric Mullins hitting a double and the side being retired without conceding any runs. The third inning saw the Bottle Rockets extend their lead to 3-0 with Corbin Carroll outrunning the ball for a score and Isaac Paredes driving in J.A. Happ.

The Mobsters finally got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to Yandy Diaz’s home run, making it 3-1. As the innings progressed, both teams showcased pitching prowess with Jesus Luzardo striking out seven over six innings for the Mobsters and Eury Perez going strong through seven for the Bottle Rockets.

Relievers Josh Hader for the Mobsters and Lucas Sims for the Bottle Rockets also held their own until the eighth inning when the Mobsters loaded the bases, but a double play extinguished their hopes. The ninth saw relief pitcher Nick Ramirez for the Mobsters strike out two before Camilo Doval was brought in to secure the final out for them.

Lucas Sims ultimately locked down the door & sealed the deal for the Bottle Rockets in the bottom of the ninth, closing it out & concluding the intense match with a final score of 3-1 in favor of the Bottle Rockets.

Final Score: Tijuana 3 – Chicago 1

Win: Eury Perez 1-2 (8.36)
Loss: Jesus Luzardo 2-2 (2.83)
Save: Lucas Sims #1

Summary: The series between the Mobsters and Bottle Rockets was a thrilling display of baseball, going 5 games to 2 in favor of the Mobsters.

In Game 1, despite strong pitching from Spencer Strider with 9 strikeouts for the Bottle Rockets, an injury to Wander Franco was a critical blow. The Mobsters’ Aroldis Chapman was stellar in relief, aiding in their convincing 6-1 victory.

Game 2 saw the Mobsters continue their offensive prowess with three home runs contributing to an 8-4 win, despite Ke’Bryan Hayes’ efforts for the Bottle Rockets.

The Bottle Rockets narrowly took Game 3 with a tense 2-1 win, thanks to Elehuris Montero‘s solo homer and Evan Carter’s home run, holding off the Mobsters despite a late rally.

J.P. Sears pitched a sensational shutout for the Mobsters in Game 4, striking out nine in a dominant 7-0 victory, highlighted by back-to-back homers from L. Arraez and Y. Alvarez.

An epic 16-inning marathon in Game 5 ended with the Mobsters prevailing 6-5. Relief pitchers like Josh Hader and Lucas Sims were crucial, but it was Noelvi Marte‘s walk-off homer that decided the game.

Game 6 was a wild ride, ending in Mobsters’ favor with a 6-5 score after Alex Bregman‘s walk-off home run, despite Garrett Hampson‘s three-run homer tying the game earlier.

Finally, in Game 7, the Bottle Rockets managed to secure a 3-1 victory. Strong performances from Cedric Mullins and Eury Perez, coupled with Lucas Sims‘ closure, gave the Bottle Rockets something to celebrate at the end of the series.

Fremont finally goes on top in the seventh thanks to Nolan Gorman’s two-run HR. After an Elias Diaz double with no outs, Mesa goes to Brusdar Graterol early to stop the bleeding, but Fremont would score two more to take the 8-5 lead. Mesa loads the bases in the 8th, but Brenton Doyle grounds out to end the threat. The Solar Sox bring the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth, but Jack Suwinski and Jake Rogers can’t get it done, and the Cannons take it 8-5. Garrett Whitlock improves to 3-0 despite allowing 9 hits.

W: Garrett Whitlock (3-0)
L: Logan T. Allen (2-2)
S: Shelby Miller (7)

HR: Mesa- Jake Rogers (3); FRE- Nolan Gorman (5)

Game #5: Heaney (MSS) vs Alcantara (FRE)

Jake Rogers gets Mesa on the board in the second with a solo shot off of Sandy Alcantara, then the Solar Sox get two more in the 4th. Fremont threatens with a runner on 3rd in the bottom of the inning, but Shohei Ohtani gets picked off of 3rd base. An Eugenio Suarez solo HR in the 5th puts Mesa up 4-0. Fremont finally scratches one across in the bottom of the inning with an Elly De La Cruz triple and groundout by Carlos Correa.

Heaney walks two in the 6th, allowing Nolan Gorman to send one over the fence to score three and ties it up 4-4. “HEANEY served up some cannon fodder that time …”. Mesa’s manager goes with Brusdar Graterol early again, and for two innings it works. In the eighth, however, Shohei Ohtani leads off with a triple. Jakob Junis comes in but promptly serves up a two-run HR to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to put the Cannons up 6-4. With Shelby Miller having seen heavy usage, Fremont trusts the ninth to Will Vest. Brenton Doyle doubles with one out to put a runner in scoring position, but a pop out and strikeout end the game with Fremont on top 6-4. The Cannons take advantage of Jose Trevino’s injury by stealing five bases,

W: Will Vest (1-0)
L: Brusdar Graterol (0-1)

HR: MSS- Eugenio Suraez (3), Jake Rogers (4); FRE- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (5), Nolan Gorman (6)

Game #6: Waldichuk (MSS) vs. Senga (FRE)

Ken Waldichuk held Fremont in check in the 1st game of the series, and again does a solid job. Nevertheless, it is Fremont on the board first in the second inning with the Cannons trading a runner for a run on a Yoan Moncada single. Two walks load the bases for Fremont in the 4th, then a Byron Buxton grounder brings in a run to make it 2-0. A walk and HBP again puts Waldichuk in trouble in the 5th, and Nolan Gorman brings in the third Cannon run with a single. Waldichuk then bears down to strike out the side to keep it from getting worse.

A walk in the sixth from Kodai Senga is followed by an Eugenio Suarez run-scoring double to give Mesa their first run and cut the lead to 3-1. Fremont calls on Shelby Miller to close it out. After a single by Gunnar Henderson, Jack Suwinski sends one deep… “MARGOT scampering back … at the track … he leaps … and brings it down”. Miller then strikes out Jake Rogers and Fremont wins the game 3-1. Waldichuk struck out 13 in 7.1 IP in the loss.

W: Kodai Senga (3-1)
L: Ken Waldichuk (1-3)
S: Shelby Miller (8)

HR- none
