Chicago  Mobsters @ Detroit  Crime

Preview: In a matchup that has been around for what seems like the beginning of time, two long-time rivals hook up in another opening weekend series which usually ends with one team winning 4 games to 3. Let’s see how this one plays out, and if the outcome is predetermined.
Game #1: Bobby Witt Jr. Leads off the season for the Crime with a Bomb. Andy Ibanez (A thorn in Chicago’s side) hits a Home Run in the 2nd. Those are all the Runs the Crime score. Jesus Luzardo was masterful for the Mobsters (besides the two solo Home Runs). 5 Innings, 9 K’s, 1 Walk, & only the two Hits. However, Chris Bassitt was equally as good for the Crime as he shut down the Mobster offense, allowing only 8 Hits, & 3 Walks, but only 1 Earned Run.

Final Score: Detroit 2 – Chicago 1

Win: Chris Bassitt 1-0 (1.23)
Loss: Jesus Luzardo 0-1 (3.60)
Save: Jason Adam #1

Game #2: Andy Ibanez has 2 Doubles, & 3 RBIs as he leads the way for the Crime. Chicago’s offense still is stuck in second gear & for the second day in a row, can’t get anything started.

Final Score: Final Score: Detroit 5 – Chicago 1

Win: Zack Wheeler 1-0 (1.13)
Loss: Bryce Miller 0-1 (9.82)

Game #3: Well, the bats woke up for Chicago. Yandy Diaz goes 4 for 5 with 2 Home Runs, 3 RBIs. Julio Rodriguez has 2 Hits in 4 trips, including a Home Run. Yordan Alvarez 2 RBIs & Willy Adames 2 Doubles. J.P. Sears goes the distance allowing only 2 Hits, 3 Walks, & 0 Runs allowed in the masterpiece.

Final Score: Chicago 8 – Detroit 0

Win: J.P. Sears 1-0 (0.00)
Loss: Sean Manaea 0-1 (9.00)

Game #4: Patrick Wisdom goes 4 for 5 with 3 Doubles, a Home Run, 10 Total Bases, & 3 RBIs. Bryce Harper has 3 Hits both Doubles & 3 RBIs. Detroit walks all over the Mobsters.

Final Score: Final Score: Detroit 11 – Chicago 4

Win: Aaron Nola 1-0 (4.50)
Loss: Tony Gonsolin 0-1 (12.60)

Game #5: Big Bats show up today once again for the Mobsters. Julio Rodriguez is 2 for 3 with a Home Run. Yandy Diaz goes 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Christian Bethancourt Homers & is 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. But the best was saved for last as Yordan Alvarez went 3 for 5 with 3 Home Runs, 7 RBIs, 12 Total Bases. The Big Man had 2 Shots at a 4th Homer, but couldn’t prevail. Big News though was some tough injuries. Chicago’s Julio Rodriguez went down for a day, & Detroit lost Brandon Belt (10 Days) & Yasmani Grandal (9 Days) to long injuries & Disabled Lists stints.

Final Score: Chicago 13 – Detroit 2

Win: Julio Urias 1-0 (3.00)
Loss: Carlos Carrasco 0-1 (37.80)

Game #6: Jesus Luzardo pitched great once again, this time picking up the win. He just needs to keep the ball in the park. Alex Bregman & Riley Greene both are 2 for 4, Greene with 2 RBIs, & Bregman with 3 RBIs. Manny Machado has a 3-Run Home Run for the Crime in their only offense that scored runs.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Detroit 3

Win: Jesus Luzardo 1-1 (2.92)
Loss: Chris Bassitt 1-1 (4.05)
Save: Camilo Doval #1

Game #7: Martin Maldonado has the big blow of the game for the Crime. A 3-Run Home Run in the 2nd Inning puts Chicago behind the 8-Ball. Luis Arraez is 4 for 5 for Chicago, but little to no offense once again for the Mobsters is their downfall.

Final Score: Final Score: Detroit 5 – Chicago 3

Win: Zack Wheeler 2-0 (2.40)
Loss: J.P. Sears 1-1 (2.40)
Save: Alexis Diaz #1

Gainsville  Swamp Things @ Tijuana  Bottle Rockets

Preview: New rivals open the season in Tijuana as The Bottle Rockets welcome new division foe Gainesville for 7 games to start the season
Game #1: Z. Gallen vs S. Strider — Strider throws 7 scoreless while the bullpen does it’s job. Gallen for the visitors, allowed a couple of doubles and a homer to take the loss. TIJ 4 GST 0
Game #2: Z. Eflin vs F Valdez — Gainesville breaks open this scoreless tie in the 5th by plating 3. They continue the barrage in the 6th, 7th and 8th, pushing runs across in each inning. Z. Eflin goes 7 scoreless to get the win. GST 8 TIJ 3
Game #3: J. France vs E. Perez — The Swamp Things bats explode for 4 home runs off Tijuana pitchers. A close one early, the game quickly turns in favor of the visitors as they pull away, in what turns into an easy victory for Gainesville. GST 6 TIJ 1
Game #4: J. Teheren vs C. Sanchez — S. Torkelson hits his 3rd home run of the year and drives in 3, leading the visitors to there 3 victory in a row. GST 7 TIJ 6
Game #5: Z. Gallen vs M. Stroman — Stroman pitches 7 strong allowing 1 run. Closer B. Stewart was brought in to pitch the 8th with The Bottle Rockets up 3-1 and promptly allowed 2 runs and a tie game. Sloppy defense in the bottom half on the inning led to 2 unearned runs to score, giving the home team the lead again. B. Stewart would finish the game off with a scoreless 9th. TIJ 5 GST 3
Game #6: Z. Eflin vs G. Rodriguez — The Swamp Things smashed 4 homers off Tijuana starter G. Rodriguez as this one was never in doubt. GST 8 TIJ 0
Game #7: J. France vs S. Strider — Strider throws 6 scoreless and the bullpen keeps it that way. TIJ 4 GST 0
Summary: Gainesville marches into town and takes 4 of 7 from the home town Bottle Rockets.

Tempe  Tempers @ Columbus  Explorers

Preview: 7 games with the Tempers – ugh, especially in a real down, rebuild year. However, see the note after game 3!!!
Game #1: 4 run Tempe 2nd wipes out the 1-0 Columbus leads. Oh well, deGrom got his 9 batters and gone and Tempe scores 8 on 13 hits – Ozuna and Kwan homer. Duran is HBP and is lost to Columbus for the rest of the series (ah, juggle usage).
TEM 8-13-0 WP Martenez (1-0)
COL 2- 6-0 LP Schmidt (0-1)
Game #2: Both team have 3 run innings, Tempe in the 2nd (as leadoff hitter Freddie Freeman goes 3 for 4 and drives in 2). Columbus gets 1 in the 3rd and then take the lead 4-3 after a 3 run 4th! Our leadoff hitter gets 2 hits but 3 rbis (“Kiki”!!). But Tempe ties it in the 6th and then somehow Columbus scores 1 in the 8th and Abreu makes it stand up but it wasn’t easy. Ramirez led off with a double. Bogaerts then singles him to 3rd! Abreu then picked off Bogaerts and whiffed Ozuna. Martinez up and he swings and fouls tips it into Mejia’s glove – game, set, match, we win one!!
TEM 4-12-0 LP Kittredge (0-1)
COL 5-11-0 WP J.King (1-0) S Abreu (1), BS Wantz (1)
We win the game, but Tempe sidelines another Explorer when Sonny Gray hits Rojas and he’ll be gone for at least 39 days!!
Game #3: Justin Verlander gives up a game leadoff homer to Pereza (1) and that’s the only hit he surrenders! And Brasier and Munoz follow – and they give up no more hits. So the 1-hitter and it was the 1st batter! Sounds great – except that Logan Gilbert goes 8 inning of 5 hit shutout ball. But then the 9th and Ramirez leads off with a double. So it’s Abreu again. Bogaerts pops out. Martinez flies out to RF, 2 down. Freddie Freeman then strokes one to LF, it drops in front of Kiki, Ramirez rounds 3rd and heads for home to tie the game, the throw, the slide, the tag, the dust clears, ump’s thumb goes up – OUT!! Game, set match as Columbus wins the game in which they got 1 hit.
TEM 0-6-0 LP Verlander (0-1)
COL 1-1-0 WP Gilbert (1-0) S Abreu (2)
NOTE: Take note – after 3 games this year, Columbus is ahead of Tempe in the standings! (probably last and only time, but there you go!!)
Game #4: Tempe 1 in the 1st and then a 2 run homer from Realmuto (1) in the 4th makes it 3-0. Columbus draws within 1 in the bottom half and a D.J. LeMahieu (1) homer. But then the Tempers get one back in the 5th and Ramirez homers (1). A big group of relievers make the 4-2 lead stick for the win!
TEM 4-9-1 WP Martinez (2-0) S Munoz (1)
COL 2-4-0 LP Lambert (0-1)
Game #5: OK – we knew this was coming, big bats usually beat up weak pitching, so here we go. A 6th run Tempe 3rd reverses the big 1-0 lead Columbus built in the 2nd. The 6 runs was lead by a Marcel Ozuna grand slam (1) – 5 rbis and 2 hits in the game (double). Ozzie Albies drives in 2 with a double. 3 run 4th and a couple of other runs key the 11-3 win. Kenta Maeda goes long enough to get the win.
TEM 11-10-0 WP Maeda (1-0)
COL 3- 9-0 LP Urquidy (0-1) Problem in the 4th was he just threw 4 or 5 straight walks – it was ugly.
Game #6: Columbus grabs a 1-0 lead in the 5th on an Oscar Colas SF. Clarke Schmidt was stellar, through 6, but lost it in the 7th and gives up 3 runs including a Martinez homer (1). Another run in the 8th and he’s gone, Gray gets win leaving in the 7th!
TEM 4-9-0 WP Sonny Gray (1-0) S Munoz (2)
COL 1-5-3 LP Schmidt (0-2)
Game #7: The finale, we have a chance to go 3-4! NOT GONNA HAPPEN Tempe scores in each of the 1st 4 innings (1-2-1-2) for a nice 6-0 lead. OK, we get 1 in the 6th, but then Tempe gets another 2 in the 7th. They get to rest a bunch of starters and get the bench guys to play. Homers were king: Ramirez (2), Realmuto (2), Slater (1) and Ozzie Albies – 2 of them (3) and 4 rbis – and 3 hits! Big day. deGrom got his 9 batters (as he works toward the minimum playoff starts qualifier. Martinez looks like the big beneficiary of the limited batters as he earns his 3rd relief start!
TEM 8-13-0 WP Martinez (3-0)
COL 1- 6-0 LP Peterson (0-1)
Summary: Well we go 2-5, actually 2 more wins than expected, we’ll take it. However, two big injuries mess up player usage. Oh well…

Coconut Creek  Crushers @ Mesa  Solar Sox

Preview: The Solar Sox, coming off a surprise playoff appearance in 2023, open their year hosting Coconut Creek, looking to rebound from a 94 loss season.
Game #1: The Crushers live up to their name, blasting 5 homers in a 7-5 win. Bohm hit one, Diaz and Olsen hit 2. Suarez and Isbel both got thrown out of the game for arguing with the umps in consecutive innings. Webb went 7 for the win. Pablo Lopez got blasted in his loss.
Game #2: Coconut Creek scored 7 times in the 5th inning off Christian Javier. Olson hit a grand slam. Blake Snell hit Taylor Ward and put him out for 19 games. Later on, he hit Connor Joe and Jake Rogers in consecutive at bats and got thrown out of the game. He won anyway, striking out 9 in 7 1/3 innings. Gunnar Henderson hit his first MWBL homer.
Game #3: Diaz hit his 3rd homer of the series, but Ezequiel Tovar and Carlos Santana supported Logan Allen’s first career win. Joe Musgrove took the loss 6-2.
Game #4: Kutter Crawford was cruising though 5 as the Crushers lead 2-0. In the bottom of the 6th Mesa broken through and over the next 3 innings scored 12 times. Tovar (2), Joe, Suwinzski, and Santana all homered to back Andrew Heaney’s first 2024 win (9 Ks in 7 innings).
Game #5: Coconut Creek walked 9 times and used Nico Hoerner’s 4 hits and a homer to give Hunter Green a 7-4 win. Joe and Suwinski homered for Mesa.
Game #6: Logan Webb hurled a 2-hit shutout, striking out 13 in a 3-0 win. Pablo Lopez recovered from a game #1 blasting and pitched a good game going all the way and striking out 12. Julien’s 2 run homer was the big blow in the Crushers win.
Game #7: Blake Snell wins his second, striking out 11 in 7 innings. Brandon Marsh tripled and homered in the 4-1 win.
Summary: Mesa hung tough with the Crushers, but ran out of gas, losing the last 3 games. Lots of hitting, but Webb and Snell were the pitching stars of the series.

Harsens Island  Walleye @ Prairie  Falcons

Preview: Opening day!!! Smell of the pine tar, chalk and always the threat of rain/cold even here on the Prairie with Laura and Pa Ingalls maintain the fields on a daily basis…nothing can stop mother nature…Harsens Island Walleye are dethawed from their months of ice cold northern temperatures…will they be heated enough to swing the bat well this week…
Game #1: Erod vs Ashcraft

Unfair advantage as Graham is like the cracker – brittle, bland and without the marshmellow and chocolate not a very enticing snack…The Walleye were awake as they build a 5-0 lead thru 8 innings – no power just 3 walks, 8 singles 1 double…they got most of their run production off Fly Balls with to runs scoring by SF and another run off a double play ball…not the type of offensive prowess they were looking for but who cares 5-0 is no cause for alarm…or is it??? Erod is pulled after 7 and here is where HIW might want to take a look at their micromanager for answers..Holderman comes in and gives up 3 runs on 2 singles and a double so he gets yanked after 1 out and Justin Steele comes in to face Casas…well interesting move to begin with but it also wasnt good as Casas rips a 2 run triple and the Falcons close the gap to a run….Steele gets the final 2 outs and then Buck Miller brings in Springs to close it out…He gives up a double but nothing else and that is how it ends 5-4 HIW with some questions to answer and a mild set of heart palputations…Falcons with some unexpected POP in lineup 5 doubles and a triple…

Game #2: King vs Fleming

Tristan Casas seems ready for breakout year and puts PRA up top 2-0 in first with a dingdong but Santiago Espinal rips a 2 out 2 run single in the 4th to tie it..Then it was all Falcons as they chased King in the 6th but more importantly Sam Hentges who was brought in to face the lefties and promptly walked the first two then gave up an rbi double to Stephenson and the Falcons score 4 runs to take a 6-2 lead. Falcons Bullpen of estevez, Bickford, Boyd and Alzolay put out any late inning fires and the walleye were cooked 6-2 in this one. Falcons again have a mere 7 hits but 4 doubles and a homer giving them 11 EBH in 2 games.

Game #3: Man of Steele vs Box Elder Bugs

Burger doubles home a run in the bottom of the first and Gelof and Trout drive home runs and sends Superman to the showers..meanwhile Elder has his stuff going..striking out 10 in 8.1 inninggs before Alex Call plates the lonw HIW run. Frito Alzolay with the 2 out save and Falcons fly high in this one 4-1….Power stroke not as potent this time with just 2 doubles but a win is a win. For the second time in the series Ball magnet Mike Trout is plunked but a good roll of the imaginary dice keeps him in the lineup…just a matter of time before he sits on the shelf…

Game #4: Woo vs Boyd

This was a classic pitching duel between these two middle of the rotation guys…Woo goes 7 innings giving up a run on an Andrew Benintendi single in the 6th while Matthew Boyd goes the distance – yes a CGSHO – 5 hits 4 walks sprinkled thru the game but nobody could walk the last 90 feet before the 3rd out of an inning. Boyd was on his game and HIW is reeling and feeling the heat in the Harsens Island Gazette as they were thinking this was a year of promise and so far the Falcons have put it to them Butt Good…

Game #5: Severino vs Fujinama

HIW had enough of this crap and get 2 walks, 4 singles and 2 runs to start the game and then the Falcons step up and out of the blue the rain clouds set in and starting dumping loads of water…Ausec checks the stadium – DAMMIT – he forgot to put the dome up and the umpires call it after 3 outs…My apologies to the league – must be the new season and I just plain forgot. I did call the commish and was instructed to play series the makeup game would be figured out by EOY..

RAIN OUT

Game #6: Erod vs Ashcraft

Just what HIW needed an ace on the hill and an offense uplifted knowing they had a bit of an advantage..Jonah Hill Hiem rips a 2 run single in the 4th and it stayed 2-0 till the bottom of the 7th when finally the Falcons figure out Erod and get an RBI single from Tyler Stephenson…In the top of the 8th the Falcons go to their pen and thank Aschcraft for the solid 7 innings of work…The Cionel comes in and walks the first bater and then 2 hits later the Walleye plate two more and take a 4-1 lead. In the 8th the Falcons once again get to face Sam Hentges and he cannot stop the birds as they score 2 runs and make this a 1 run game before Amir Garrett comes in and gets the final 2 outs. Bottom of the 9th and it is 4-3 HIW Springs once again gets the call out of the pen and sets Falcons down in order 1-2-3 Game Over…Erod goes 2-0 on the year while Ashcraft falls to 0-2

Game #7: KIng vs Fleming

Sal Frelick was 3 fo5 with a 2B Hr 3 runs and a total nightmare for Falcons pitching it was not even close to enough for the Walleye as the Falcons pounded 6 Homers including 2 by the Kraken and one each by Casas, Moniak, Benintendi and yes even Javier Baez. Falcons close the series out winning this one 8-5 and dethroning the King as he starts season 0-2 while Fleming ties ERod at 2-0.

Summary: Falcons take the opening series 4-2 with a rainout…HIW probably wont get a day off as the coaches did not have team prepared so expect a few one sided conversations and some extra work in the cage. Frelick was a beast hitting .421 for HIW and Erod we spoke of as well. Falcons because of their platooning really had no one with a huge series – Kraken led team in homers but played one game…ok he tied with Casas at 2 but Tristan saw 6 games in action. Boyd CGSHO and Alzolay’s 3 saves were probably the biggest stats of the week.

Falcons stay put next week as they welcome the Laid Back West Coast approach of the Sacramento club while Harsens Island goes home and awaits their foe next week the dreaded Tempe and their bad Tempers…Can they put them in timeout or will they fold like a hover parent and turn the boob tube and hand them a controller…
