Owensboro @ Iron City – The showdown took place at the Yinzer’s home stadium………
GM 1: This one gave the fans their money’s worth. Hamels (OWN) vs Niemann (IRC); it was a pitching duel for the ages. A wild throw by SS Andrus (IRC) allows Ortiz to score from 2nd to tie the game at 1 apiece. Fontenot (OWN) then singles in Andruw Jones to put OWN up 2-1. And thats all the scoring for the day as Hamels (CG-4h-1r) shuts the Yinzers down for the day. Iron City’s Niemann throws a remarkable game himself (6.2- 3h-2r-0er-7k) in the loss. Hamels improves his record to 18-7 2.38
GM 2: The Onslaught needed to bolster their pitching for the run for the playoffs so they traded for Collmenter. As luck would have it, the insurance move gets hurt for two weeks as he pitches his first game. So headed into this week’s showdown with 2nd place Iron City, the Onslaught make an emergency move and pick up pitcher Dickson to help out. And what a pickup it was…..he throws a CG 3 hit shutout vs Yinzers Lance Berkman goes 3/4 for OWN in the win.
GM 3: 11 innings – This one had Napoli written all over it….he goes 4/4 and nails two potential Yinzer base stealers! O’Sullivan somehow puts together a win going 7ip-5h-1r-7k. Final is 5-1 as Iron City manages to tally its only run of the first 3 games!!
GM 4: 11 innings – Another thriller; Mr Nix (OWN) ties game in top 9th with a HR! Top 10: Hughes (OWN) is picked off first with 2 out and slugger David Ortiz at the plate! Bottom 10: Murphy (IRC) is picked off by Onslaught!! Top 11: Berkman in to pinch hit for OWN’s Inge and he rips a single which scores Hairston…2-1 Onslaught! Fontenot then smashes a fastball to CF for a 3 run HR. Onslaught up 5-1. Bottom 11: things get scary for OWN as Yinzers score twice but final score is 5-3 Owensboro.
GM 5:
Top 1: Hairston (OWN) is ejected arguing a play at second! From there, it was all Iron City. The Yinzers collect 15 hits behind Andrus (3/5) and V-Mart (4/4; 4rbi). Lincecum CG-1r-7k for Yinzers as he runs his record to 17-10 2.70
GM 6: Hosmer has a huge day 3/4, 2hr, 4rbi to lead Iron City to victory. Gonzalez (IRC) hits HR #36! Onslaught are limited to 4 hits as Niemann 8ip-4h-1r-0er-9k pitches his second gem of the series.
The Onslaught management would like to cast their vote for Player of the Week:
Mr Niemann of Iron City: 14.2ip- 7h- 3r- 0er- 16k
Owensboro takes 4 of 6 from Iron City.
