Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Fremont  Cannons

Series Preview: The top of the East and bottom of the Central meet up for 6 games.
Game #1: Fremont jumps out with four against Tijuana starter Framber Valdez in the first. Tijuana loads the bases in the second but is unable to score off Fremont starter Tarik Skubal. Tijuana again loads the bases in the 6th, but Jake Cousins gets a fly out and a throw out at home from Manuel Margot to again keep the Bottle Rockets scoreless. An Austin Hays solo homer in the sixth gives Fremont an insurance run to go up 5-0.

Fremont’s bullpen loads the bases again in the seventh so the Cannons bring in Genesis Cabrera for the left-on-left matchup; unfortunately, the ball left the yard for a Cedric Mullins grand slam, bringing the game to a slim 5-1 lead for Fremont. After that, Fremont goes on to score 4 more to put the game out of reach. Cannons win 9-4. Skubal strikes out 11 in 5.1 innings.

W: Tarik Skubal (5-2)
L: Framber Valdez (1-4)

HR: TIJ- Cedric Mullins (12- Grand Slam); FRE-Austin Hays (9)

Game #2: Tijuana’s Huascar Ynoa and Fremont’s Zac Gallen pitch well, each racking up 13 strikeouts. The game stays scoreless until Tijuana strings together two runs in the sixth. Fremont gets one back in the bottom of the inning with a Shohei Ohtani solo homer, then ties it with a Teoscar Hernandez home run in the seventh.

Byron Buxton comes in and hits a pinch-hit homer in the eighth to put Fremont up 3-2. Giovanny Gallegos gets the Bottle Rockets to go 1-2-3 in the ninth for the Fremont 3-2 victory. Cedric Mullins finishes with three doubles on the day.

W: Anthony Bender (2-0)
L: Jacob Diekman (1-2)
S: Giovanny Gallegos (12)

HR: TIJ-none; FRE-Shohei Ohtani (21), Teoscar Hernandez (14), Byron Buxton (6)

Game #3: A pair of Grade 3’s matchup in this one. Fremont feels good after putting up 3 in the first on T.J. Zeuch. Tijuana answers back with 4 in the 2nd off of Dylan Bundy, started by a Taylor Trammell HR. Fremont tacks on a run in the 4th with a bases loaded sac fly, but are unable to get any more in.

Trammell gets the Bottle Rockets going again in the sixth with a leadoff walk, and a clutch Joseph Odom brings him home. Tijuana scores another in the seventh, then Cedric Mullins and Ian Happ hot back-to-back homers in the 9th to win it for Tijuana 8-4. Cedric Mullins goes 3-5 with a homer and two doubles.

W: T.J. Zeuch (2-4)
L: Dylan Bundy (1-1)

HR: TIJ- Cedric Mullins (13), Ian Happ (10), Taylor Trammell (4); FRE- none

Game #4: Fremont hitters treat this one as batting practice, chasing Tijuana starter Corbin Martin after just 0.2 innings pitched with seven earned runs. Replacement Nick Margevicius allows 6 more runs, and the rout is on. Fremont starter Sandy Alcantara allows just one earned run to stay unbeaten, and Fremont takes it 16-1 despite committing three errors. Josh Rojas goes 3-4 and homers twice, and Austin Hays goes 3-4 with a homer as well.

W: Sandy Alcantara (7-0)
L: Corbin Martin (1-7)

HR: TIJ- Josh Vanmeter (4); FRE- Yoan Moncada (5), Josh Rojas 2 (2), Austin Hays (10)

Game #5: Grade 3’s again take the bump, with Tijuana scoring an unearned run off of Spencer Howard for the early 1-0 lead in the third. No more scoring would occur until the 6th, when the Bottle Rockets would add on three more to go up 4-0. Garrett Hampson is hit by a pitch during the inning and is knocked out for 3 days.

Fremont comes up empty against Tanner Roark until the seventh, when Mike Yastrzemski puts them on the board with a solo HR. Yulieski Gurriel then doubles home Shohei Ohtani in the 8th, and Fremont pulls within two. A Max Kepler walk in the ninth brings the tying run to the plate, but the Cannons fail to score. Tijuana win 4-2. Roark only strikes out one batter in 7.1 innings in the victory.

W: Tanner Roark (1-6)
L: Spencer Howard (0-1)
S: Drew Smith (8)

HR: TIJ- Gary Sanchez (6); FRE- Mike Yastrzemski (5)

Game #6: Corbin Martin felt rested enough after his 0.2 IP start in Game 4 to give it another shot. He did last longer, going 2.1 innings in this one before departing with an 8-day injury and 8 earned runs allowed. Fremont builds an 8-1 lead behind Tarik Skubal.

Eight runs against the Fremont bullpen make it interesting, but a bases-clearing double by Austin Hays in the 7th gives Fremont enough of a cushion for the 11-8 victory. Jake Cousins shuts down the Bottle Rockets with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth. Teoscar Hernandez goes 3-4 with a homer in the win, while exciting rookie Wander Franco goes 3-4 with a homer for Tijuana.

W: Tarik Skubal (6-2)
L: Corbin Martin (1-8)
S: Jake Cousins (5)

HR: TIJ- Wander Franco (2); FRE- Teoscar Hernandez (15), Mike Yastrzemski (6), Max Kepler (1)
