Mesa  Solar Sox @ Dallas  Cougars

Series Preview:  Dallas is in 2nd place in the AL East 1.5 games behind Motor City. On the league leader boards they are 3rd in batting at .272, 4th in runs scored, 4th in slugging, 3rd in on base percentage, and second best in ERA at 2.55.

Mesa is in 3rd place in the AL West 1.5 games behind Hollywood. On the league leader boards they are 6th in batting at .234.

Game #1: Jose Abreu hits a 2 run homer in the first and Hundley adds a solo home run in the 4th, but the story of the game was Cougar’s starter Patrick Corbin, who pitched a PERFECT GAME!

Corbin had 8 ground outs, 9 fly outs or pop ups, and 10 strike outs.

There were three defensive plays that stood out:

Two outs in the 3rd – “Now he comes home with it … lined to left center … giving chase is POLLOCK he hightails it to the track … and he snares it on the fly … POLLOCK really picked it! a fine running catch “

One out in the 4th – “Here he comes … on the ground … back through the box … HARRISON gloves it … spins and fires long stretch … just nips SUAREZ by a half step”

Two outs in the 8th – ” The delivery … batted hard on the ground toward right … diving stop by HARRISON! … throws and he makes the play to first … MAZARA is robbed of a base hit on a great play by HARRISON”

Final Score: Dallas 4, Mesa 0

Game #2: Mesa took out their game one frustration on the Cougar pitching staff pounding out 18 hits including 11 extra base hits – 5 which were home runs. Over the last 5 innings the Sun Sox outscored Dallas 13 to 2.

Final Score: Mesa 15, Dallas 8

Game #3: In the 6th Jose Abreu puts Dallas ahead 3 to 2 with a lead off solo homer.

Yonder Alonso puts Mesa back in front with two outs in the 7th, “The pitch … swung on … and it’s pulled hard to right … good-bye Mr. Spalding … it’s gone! home run for ALONSO … and two runs score”

In the bottom of the 8th Yangervis Solarte ties the game on a double going to third base when Abreu, was trying to score the winning run was thrown out at the plate.
However Solarte would later scoring the winning run in an unconventional way, “Looks at third … PAZOS comes home … no, wait … what’s this? the ump is bringing SOLARTE home … it’s a balk! … COUGARS lead!”

Final Score: Dallas 5, Mesa 4

Game #4:  Edwin Diaz blows the save in the 9th but hangs around to pitch the 10th and pick up the win when Nick Franklin hits a bloop single after a wild pitch moved runners to second and third in the bottom of the 10th.

Final Score: Dallas 6, Mesa 5

Game #5:  Spot starter Brock Stewart allows only 2 hits in 6 innings – one which was a solo home run by Eddie Rosario and Nick Hundley and Tyler Collins each drove in two runs. Collins two RBI came courtesy of a two run homer.

Final Score: Dallas 4, Mesa 1

Game #6:  Patrick Corbin was brilliant again not allowing a hit or base runner until two outs in the 4th. Yangervis Solarte provided all the offense Corbin would need when he hit a solo home run in the 2nd inning.

Corbin pitched his 2nd CG of the year allowing 5 hits while striking out 9.

Final Score: Dallas 1, Mesa 0

Series Summary:  Dallas takes the series 5 games to 1, but it could have very easily been a split. Both teams face their division leaders next week in Motor City and Hollywood.

Corktown  Cycle @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Preview:  Corktown Cycle (4-10) coast into Triple Creek (5-9). Offensively, Triple Creek will be back to full strength after game #1 and Alex Wood will return from the DL in game #4.
Game #1:  Creek’s Sean Newcomb is tagged quickly for 3 in the 1st. He helps himself out with a 2 RBI bunt in the bottom half of the 2nd. Cycle pitching was just better enough today to get the win in what would be the first of many close games.

Michael Taylor 3-5 w/ 2 doubles.

CRK 4 TCP 3

W – Faria (1)
L – Newcomb (2)
S – Colome (1)

Game #2:  Seager, Bellinger and Headley all homer early for the Patriots to open up a big 7-0 lead going into the 5th. Corktown strikes for 6 in innings 5 and 6 but Triple Creek’s pen holds the line there. LEad off spot stays hot for the Cycle as Kemp is 2 for 3.

CRK 6 TCP 7

W – Soria (1)
L – Berrios (2)
S – Reed (3)

Game #3:  Triple Creek’s Graveman-Law-Feliz-Jennings combo throw a 6-hit shutout. Teams combined for 16 hits, 13 of them singles. Asher goes 7 good innings for Corktown.

CRK 0 TCP 2

W – Graveman (1)
L – Asher (2)
S – Jennings (2)

Game #4:  Alex Wood climbs the hill fresh from the DL and is hammered for a 7 point drop due to excessive itchiness. Koehler and Wood tango to a 1-1 tie through 5 innings and get to Wood in the 6th for 2 runs. Koehler tires a bit himself in the 6th and Triple Creek scratch 3 back for a 4-3 lead. Creek’s Soria allows late solo shots to Plawecki and Hosmer to blow the game.

CRK 5 TCP 4

Game #5:  Hurlers for both teams are solid as this game needed an extra frame. Tied 3-3 heading into the 10th, Jennings was able to hold down the Cycle but Colome got a little too much of the plate and pinch hitter Brantley took him deep for a the walk-off winner.

Robbie Ray goes 6 good innings and goes 2-2 to boot.

CRK 3 TCP 5

W – Jennings (1)
L – Colome (1)
S – None

Game #6:  Faria pitches a good game allowing 3 hits and 2 runs over 7 full. Strahm and company allow just 1 run through 7. Corktown rallies in the 8th to tie the game at 2. Knebel enters the 9th and stares down lead-off hitter Bellinger. Bellinger would take his first offering and crush it into the late afternoon sun, back to back walk-offs for the Patriots.

CRK 2 TCP 3

W – Reed (1)
L – Knebel (1)
S – None

Series Summary:  A very close series that Corktown could have easily won but Triple Creek played thief this week and takes 4 of 6.

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Yonge Street  Stalkers

Series Preview:  Tijuana host Yonge Street in this A.L. Central match up.
Series Summary:  The home team takes this one 5 games to 2.

Pittsburgh  Lumber Company @ Jersey  Nor’easters

Series Preview:  First place Pittsburgh comes to town for an early season test of how good each team may be.
Game #1:  Jersey’s Brad Hand blows a save forcing the game into extra innings. The Nor’easters score in the 10th to come away with a 3-2 win. Young Josh Hader gets the win.
Game #2:  Jose Ramirez and Jay Bruce hit back to back homers in the first inning staking Vince Velasquez to a quick 4-0 lead. Jersey goes on to win the game 7-1. Velasquez the win, Kuhl the loss.
Game #3:  Aaron Judge hits a 2-run homer in the 6th to give the Lumber Company the lead. Yasmani Tomas comes off the bench and smacks a 2-run pinch hit homer in the 7th as Jersey reclaims the lead. It holds up, Brad does convert the save and Jersey wins 5-4.
Game #4:  Pittsburgh’s Brad Dozier snacks a couple of homers and the Lumber Company get just enough pitching to win the game 5-4.
Game #5:  The Nor’easters bounce back. They hit the Lumber Company with a 5 run second inning and coast to a 9-1 win. Dan Straily wins his second game of the year.
Game #6:  Pittsburgh jumps out to an early 2-0 lead but Domingo Santana hits a 2-run homer to tie the game in the 4th. Jersey scores 2 in the 7th and it holds up for 4-2 win.
Series Summary:  The surprising Nor’easters raise their record to 12-7 as they take 5 of 6 from Pittsburgh.

Selkirk  Steelers @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview:  Columbus gets it’s home opener this week and is feeling pretty good – back to back playoff years and 100+ seasons, but their pitching staff is the biggest questions mark. SO – what happens in games 1 and 2. For the two games, a total of 22 innings, the Explorers outhit the Steelers 8-5 (for both games) and yet the Steelers out score the Explorers 2-0. In the 13 inning 1-0 win for the Selkirk, the Steelers get only 2 hits! But in the opener, another Selkirk 1-0 win, do the Explorers even get a hit?
Game #1:  Talk about a pitchers duel. J.A. Happ goes 7.2, gives up 2 hits – but one of them was a Starlin Castro triple which was followed by a Steven Souza SF for the 1-0 lead. BUT as good as that 2 hitter was, Max Fried cooked the Explorers for a CG NO-HITTER!! In fact, if it weren’t for a Hector Sanchez error, it would have been a perfect game. Fried goes the distance fanning 7, walking none, and facing 28 batters. Explorers hitless in their home opener.
SEL 1-3-1 WP Fried (1-1)
COL 0-0-0 LP Happ (0-2)
Game #2:  Lance McCullers, Jr. sure was trying. He pitches 8 innings of 1 hit ball, giving up no runs, walking 3 and fanning 13. But he gets no offense as Justin Nicolino goes 9 innings yielding 6 hits and no runs. So we end up in free baseball – 4 more innings worth – and the Steelers manage only 1 more hit, a 13th inning double by Pat Vakaika off Chris Rusin to start the 13th. He’s grounded to 3rd and then scores on a wild pitch by Drew Steckenrider to make it 1-0. Meanwhile, Hector Neris, Zach McAllister and Bud Norris continue to keep Columbus scoreless so Selkirk wins their 2nd straight 2-0 game!
SEL 1-2-1 WP McAllister (1-2) S Norris (1)
COL 0-8-0 LP Rusin (0-2)
Game #3:  Will this scoreless drought continue? Yes – 3 more innings but then the dam begins to leak, and then in the 8th, the dam breaks! Columbus finally scores a run in the 4th when Ryan Zimmerman smacks a solo homer (2). But in the 5th, Austin Hedges socks a 2 run homer (2) and the Steelers gain the lead. Explorers tie it right back up in the bottom half and then get 2 more in the 6th. We move to the home 8th, Explorers up 5-2 when they erupt for 7 runs fueled by Jesus Sucre and his grand slam (1). He’s up on the roster this week when the Explorers top 2 catchers went down with injuries in the first week and in this game he has a CAREER GAME going 5 for 5 with 2 doubles, the grand slam, 2 runs and 4 rbis! Zimmerman also hit a second homer in the game (3).
SEL 2- 4-1 LP Gibson (0-1)
COL 12-18-1 WP Shoemaker (1-0)
Game #4:  Explorers off the home field schnied and open this one with 2 in the first when Shin Soo Choo homers (2) and he’s joined by Matt Carpenter (3). Down 2-0 as the 4th inning opens, Steven Souza ties it up with a 2 run shot (4). Nick Williams follows with a solo shot (1) of his own and the Steelers steal the lead. Bottom 5 – 2 outs and Charlie Blackmon reaches on a Profar error. Carpenter makes the Steelers pay by smoking his 2nd homer of the game (4) and it’s 4-3 Columbus. But not for long – Souza decides if Carpenter can hit 2 out, so can he and he ties it up with a solo shot (5) in the 6th. Bottom of the 7th, Dee Gordon singles off the rubber then Choo doubles him home. With NO OUTS, Blackmon is given the IW to face 2 homer Carpenter. Good move (maybe). He grounds it to Starlin Castro for the DP, but Castro throws it into LF, Choo scores and Blackmon gets to 3rd. Curtis Granderson then grounds into an infield single scoring 1. End of the inning Columbus has moved to 7-4 lead.
In the 8th Cory Spangenberg singles and goes to 2nd on a Choo error. With 1 out, Castro doubles him home to make it 7-5. Bottom half, Alex Avila hits a 1 out solo homer (1). Choo walks and Blackmon unloads for a 2 run shot (4) and that takes us to the final score 10-5 Columbus.
SEL 5- 9-2 LP Zach Davies (0-2)
COL 10-11-1 WP Ervin Santana (2
Game #5:  Series now even a 3rd inning Eduardo Nunez singles in 1 but Starlin Castro homers in the 4th (5) with a runner on and the Selkirk takes a 2-1 lead. Columbus ties it up in the bottom half on a Jose Iglesias rbi single. Game stays knotted at 2 until Iglesias homers (1) in the 7th to give the Explorers a 3-2 lead that they won’t relinquish.
SEL 2-5-0 LP Ronald Herrera (0-1)
COL 3-5-0 WP Chris Rusin (1-2) S David Robertson (3)
Game #6:  This is one of the games you really hate (depending on which team you’re routing for of course). Selkirk opens with a 3 spot in the 1st, Starlin Castro an rbi single and a (Explorer killer) Steven Souza 2 run homer (6). Blackmon SF makes it 3-1 in the bottom half. Then, how come this guy’s playing, Jesus Sucre hits a solo homer (2) in the 2nd and it’s 3-2 Selkirk. Ryan Zimmerman hits a solo shot (4) in the 3rd and it’s a tie game.
Explorers take the lead in the 6th when Matt Carpenter hits a solo homer(5) and then get another on a PH single from Allen Cordoba. Explorers have marched back from a 3-0 deficit to a 5-3 lead.
Top of the 8th and the home fans are not ready for what happens. Kung Fu Panda, Pablo Sandoval gets a 1 out single. Starlin Castro gets the seeing eye job. Chris Rusin comes in and hits Steven Souza. Pat Valaika grounds out but drives in a run. Carlos Sanchez hits a PH single to LF and Souza scores on a wild throw by Ben Revere. Jesse Winker follows with a 2 run single. Nick Williams singles and Luis Avilan is brought on. Ryan Hoskins then doubles down the RF line scoring 2 more for a 6 run Steelers 8th and a 9-5 lead!
Bottom of the 8th – yes it’s one of those games. Ben Revere leads off with a home run (1). Sucre follows him with his 2nd homer (3) of the game! And it’s 9-7.
Top 9 – looking for insurance when your up 9-7 doesn’t sound overly important, good to have, but not a necessity, or is it? Spangenberg walks and steals 2nd. Castro grounds him to 3rd and Souza beats out an infield whack and drives in Spangenberg for that seemingly innocuous insurance run. But is it?
Bottom of the 9th – Nunez starts it off with a single. But Hector Neris gets both Charlie Blackmon and Zimmerman to retire before Carpenter comes up and smacks a 2 run homer (6) to make it 10-9. See, insurance is good, and after Revere gets his 3rd hit of the game, Neris then gets the final out when he fans the suddenly torrid hitting Sucre to end the game.
SEL 10-13-0 WP Zach McAllister (2-2) S Neris (4)
COL 9-17-1 LP Chris Rusin (1-3) BS (2)
Game #7:  Series tied 3-3 and Columbus wants to take the series so they give the ball to Lance McCullers, Jr – the tough ND from game 2 and this time he goes 6 innings giving up 1 hit and fanning 8. That’s a total of 14 innings and 2 hits given up in his 2 starts this week and 21 Ks!!! And he gets the win and Jhan Marinez and Drew Steckenrider go the final 3 – no hits allowed – for the team shutout, a combined 1 hitter.
Oh yes, this time he had run support. Ryan Zimmerman clouts 2 more homers (5, 6) and 5 rbis and Allen Cordoba gets a PH solo homer (1) in the 7-0 win.
SEL 0- 1-1 LP Fried (1-2) gives up 11 hits in the game after his no-hitter
COL 7-14-0 WP McCullers (2-0)
Series Summary:  What a topsy turvy series. 2 total runs in games 1 and 2. Then 60 total runs in the final 5!!! No-hitter, 1 hitters, multiple 2 homer games for both teams.
4-3 Series win for Columbus.
And all this with the undocumented change to stealing success for runners (ouch, certainly affects my teams across the board – I like base stealers, but man, watch out, they can be easily cut down by grade -4 catchers – especially on the H&R – and I’m talking about 30+ SSN guys!!).

Southbend  Lynx @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview:  Cross-town Division rivals going nowhere fast.
Game #1:  VIR 5-1
W- Luis Perdomo (1-0)
L – Nick Pivetta (0-3)
Even though Jose Altuve went 3-3 and Mark Trumbo jacked a solo shot, it wasn’t enough for Southbend as George Springer smashed a 3-run roundtripper in the 5th and Anthony Rizzo roped a RBI double in the 7th to give Virginia a 5-1 lead and eventual victory as the bullpen held the Lynx hitless over the last 2 innings.
Game #2:  SBL 7-5 (11 innings)
W- Roberto Osuna (1-0)
L – Cory Gearrin (0-2)
Sv- Jason Motte (1)
Matt Joyce cranked a 3-run homer in the 1st and then he ripped his 2nd longball in the 3rd followed by a Mark Trumbo homerun that gave SBL a 5-1 lead. However, 3 solo homeruns by the Gents Jorge Bonifacio, Carlos Santana, and Whitt Merrifield, along with a couple of RBI doubles tied the game by the 7th inning. SBL’s pen took over after that and allowed only 1 hit over 4 1/3 innings. SBL broke the tie in the 11th on a costly error by VIR and a SF from John Jaso.
Game #3:  SBL 14-4
W- AJ Cole- (2-2)
L – Chrissman Tillman- (0-1)
Lynx pound out 17 hits in a laugher. Jose Altuve goes 3-6 with 2 runs and 5 RBI with his 5th homer. Jose Osuna also gets 5 RBI on a 2-5 day with a home run. VIR just went through the motions.
Game #4:  SBL 7-4
W- Anthony Banda (2-0)
L – Trevor Cahill (0-3)
Errors led VIR to a 3-1 lead but SBL came right back with 3 runs in the 4th on a Rocky Gale homer to take a 4-3 lead. They added 3 more runs on hits by Jose Altuve, Matt Joyce, and Eduardo Escobar to seal the win and give Southbend a 3-1 series lead.
Game #5:  VIR 9-4
W- Chris Archer (2-2)
L – Michael Foltynewicz (0-4)
VIR got out to a 8-0 lead by the 3rd inning and coasted for the win. The bottom of the batting order (6 through 9)did most of the damage as they combined for 9 hits, 7 runs, and 8 RBI.
Game #6:  SBL 4-3
W- Nick Pivetta (1-3)
L – Trevor Williams (3-1)
Sv- (3)
Matt Joyce continued to do damage to VIR and ripped 2 hits to pick up 2 more RBI and help spoil the Gents’ hope for victory. In spite of 3 errors by SBL they got out of several trouble spots as Pivetta whiffed 10 batters in his 8 innings. Roberto Osuna pitched the 9th for the save.
Game #7:  VIR 7-6
W-Cory Gearrin (1-2)
L -Brad Brach (0-2)
A 2-run homer by Logan Forsythe in the 3rd and 4 runs in the 5th thanks to the bottom 3 in the Lynx line-up gave SBL a 6-4 lead. Anthony Rizzo kept the game close as he went 4-5 with a homer and 2 RBI. Neil Walker gave the Gents the win in the 9th with his 3rd RBI of the day.
Series Summary:  Southbend takes the series 4-3.
SBL – Jose Altuve 13-32 .406, 6 runs, 7 RBI and a homer
Matt Joyce 12-31 .387, 6 runs, 8 RBI and 2 homers
VIR – Anthony Rizzo 13-30 .433, 8 runs, 6 RBI and a homer
Carlos Santana 11-28 .392, 8 runs, 2 RBI and a homer

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Sacramento  Capitals

Series Summary:  Sacramento beats Bethesda 4-3 in a series that could have gone either way. Really, a 10th inning walk-off single was the difference. Sacramento rode Scherzer and Sale for 4 wins while Ryu, Cobb, and Hill get the Ws for Bethesda. The NL East will be a great race to watch.

Southwest Detroit  Fighting Chihuahuas @ Fremont  Cannons

Series Preview:  Fremont takes on a one-win Chihuahuas team.
Game #1:  Fremont scores 3 in the first and holds on to win 5-2. Carlos Rodon strikes out 7 in his winning debut.
Game #2:  Southwest Detroit doubles its win total of the season behind a complete game from Matt Moore, winning 6-2. Moore struck out eight, lowering his ERA to 14.12 in the victory.
Game #3:  Fighting Chihuahuas with a win streak! Reynaldo Lopez pitches the second consecutive complete game for SWD, blanking the Cannons in a 5-0 win. Lopez allowed only 5 baserunners in the game, and Ryon Healy hit his 5th home run.
Game #4:  Fremont scores 3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5! Javier Baez singles home Khris Davis for the winning run.
Game #5:  Jaime Garcia moves to 2-1 with a 6-2 Cannons victory. Kennys Vargas and Maikel Franco each homered for Fremont, while Ryon Healy upped his HR total to 6.
Game #6:  The only blowout of the series, Fremont coasts 11-0 behind a strong outing from Carlos Rodon (2-0). Rodon strikes out nine in 7 innings, allowing only two hits and no walks. Tommy Joseph, Jonathan Schoop, and Byron Buxton all homered for Fremont.
Game #7:  The finale had a lot of excitement. The Chihuahuas used their second unearned run of the game to tie it at 2 in the seventh. The teams would stay level until the top of the 11th, when Wilson Contreras put the Rat-Dogs up with a solo homer. With two outs, Max Kepler is able to single home Manuel Margot for the tying run. SWD is unable to score in the top of the 12th. In the bottom of the frame, a leadoff single from Javier Baez puts a runner on. It is followed up with a ball in the corner on a hit-and-run with Carlos Correa, scoring Baez for the game winner.
Series Summary:  A good series for both teams. SWD improves to three wins on the season, and the Cannons have a winning record after three weeks of the season.
