Pittsburgh Lumber Company @ Bethesda Bandicoots |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Pittsburgh travels to Bethesda as the two tied teams try to duke it out over the lead in the NL East. |
Game #1: | Rich Hill didn’t have it at all lasting just 2/3 of a 4-run inning, but Justin Nicolina did have it – go figure – holding Pittsburgh scoreless for 4+ innings which gave Bethesda just enough time to come back to capture a 6-4 come-from-behind win. Matt Kemp (21) and Marlon Byrd (1) homered for Pittsburgh – both during Hill’s forgettable performance – with Kemp knocking in three runs on three hits. Anthony Rendon (22) blasted a two-run shot off starter Sean Manaea in the 4th to make it 4-2 for the Lumber Company and then Trevor Story made the highlight reel with a three-run pinch hit blast in the 7th off Sammy Solis after the lefty reliever got into control problems walking Eric Fryer and Carlos Ruiz to open the inning. |
Game #2: | Former Bandicoot Jake Odorizzi doesn’t take long to get his revenge on his former team as he allowed just one run over six innings as Pittsburgh evened the series with a 2-1 win. Odorizzi gave up just four hits and no walks and fanned eight in the contest. Miguel Gonzalez dropped to 1-4 on the year despite pitching a fine eight innings with just four hits allowed. Gonzalez made just two mistakes, but there was no evidence left to prove it as they were pulverized over the outfield wall by Matt Kemp (2nd inning #22) and Eugenio Suarez (#15 in the 5th). Derek Norris drove in the lone Bethesda run with a single in the 2nd that scored Brad Miller from 2nd base. |
Game #3: | Aledmys Diaz doubled and homered to lift the Bandicoots to a 5-3 win over Pittsburgh. The Lumber Company continued to have no problem leaving the park with their third straight two-homer game – Michael Saunders (16) and Eugenio Suarez (16). Diaz’s homer was his 18th and it helped starter John Lackey move to 12-5 with Steve Cishek notching his second save of the series and 22nd of the year. |
Game #4: | Cole Hamels improves to 17-5 and nearly takes Trevor Story’s head in the process as he holds the Bandicoots to just three hits in a narrow 2-1 Pittsburgh win. Story is expected to be out of action landing on the DL for about two weeks. The shortstop watched groggily as the mash parade continued for the Lumber Company with Michael Saunders (17) and Chris Owings (6) going deep. Brad Miller who seemed to have 20 homers in the first 30 games of the season managed his 25th as he countered for Bethesda in a losing effort. |
Game #5: | Rich Hill recovered nicely from his Game #1 outing to throw a two-hitter in a 2-0 shutout of the Lumber Company. Hill struck out 11 and walked four as he improved to 10-0 on the year. Tyler Naquin had three hits for Bethesda and Travis Shaw slammed homer #16 with the only other run scoring on an Aledmys Diaz double play groundout. |
Game #6: | Brad Miller launched a three run homer in the 6th inning to lead the Bandicoots to a 6-4 comeback win over Pittsburgh. Miller’s homer followed Michael Saunder’s 18th homer of the year and third of the series which broke open a 1-1 tie when it left the park with two runners on base with none other than shit for brains Ryan Madson on the mound. Saunders added a single and drove in all four of the Lumber Company runs. Anthony Rendon had two hits and scored twice for Bethesda. The worst thing about this game was that even after pitching like garbage and allowing the homer to Saunders it was Madson that was credited with the win. |
Series Summary: | Bethesda snatches four of six to take a brief 2-game lead over surging Pittsburgh in the NL East. |

Daniel Murphy’s RBI double and solo home run accounted for the Bottle Rockets 2 runs and George Springer’s SF and Anthony Rizzo’s solo long ball gave the Sluggers thier 2 runs. But it was Neil Walker’s walk-off RBI double in the 10th that gave VIR the win. Rizzo was 3-5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. |
Game #5: | VIR 4-2 Even though out hit 13-10, VIR held on to eek out a win. Chris Archer (10-9) K’d 12 but allowed 11 hits in 7 innings including Jose Bautista’s 2 run jimmy jack in the 5th that cut the VIR lead to 2. VIR had put 4 on the board in the 2nd highlighted by Jackie Bradley’s 2 run homer and those 4 runs held up as the bullpen did its job. |
