Valdosta  Snappers @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview:  Bethesda tries to keep King Kong Carter in the park as the Valdosta Snappers visit for a six-game set.
Game #1:  Dillon Gee’s first start of the season was not a memorable as he gave up a pair of runs in the 1st and 4th innings and took the loss as Bethesda won 5-1. Bethesda starter Jake Odorizzi pitched 8 strong innings for the Bandicoots fanning a dozen Snappers and allowing only five hits. Derek Norris drove in three runs for Bethesda in a rare offensive support role.
FINAL – BETHESDA 5, VALDOSTA 1
Win-Odorizzi (4-4)
Loss-Gee (0-1)
HR-VAL: S.Smith (10); BET:B.Miller (21), D.Norris (4)
Game #2:  Game Two was a pitching meatgrinder as the teams combined for 19 runs and 26 hits with Bethesda outgrinding the Snappers 11-8. Travis Shaw had three runs scored and three RBIs to his name for Bethesda while Adeiny Hechevarria scored twice and went 3/5 for Valdosta. Colby Lewis lasted three innings for Valdosta allowing five runs on six hits and a couple of walks. He fanned two. Blake Wood had a relief performance he would like to forget when after a perfect 4th inning he ran out of rocket fuel and then exploded on the launch pad as Bethesda knocked him around for four runs on four hits without getting an out in the 5th. Bethesda starter John Gant looked like he had settled down after a shaky 3-run 1st inning by Valdosta but then reality set in and he sucked big in the 6th allowing three runs to tighten the score at 9-7.
FINAL – BETHESDA 11, VALDOSTA 8
Win-Gant (3-0)
Save-Cishek (16)
Loss-Lewis (4-5)
HR-VAL: none; BET: B.Miller (22), T.Shaw (8)
Game #3:  Matt Wisler never should have gotten up this morning.
Bethesda pounded the Snappers’ starter for 7 runs and 13 hits over 3-1/3 innings providing way more support than Jake Arrieta needed as the Bandicoots cruised to a 9-0 easy win. Adrian Gonzalez vied Arrieta for star of the game honors. The veteran Dodger first baseman was a cool 5/5 with three RBIs in the game, but we have to give the nod to Arrieta who not only struck out nine and allowed just two hits in seven scoreless innings but also went 2/2 at the plate including his 2nd homer of the season and drove in three runs.
FINAL – BETHESDA 9, VALDOSTA 0
Win-Arrieta (9-1)
Loss-Wisler (2-10)
HR-VAL: none; BET: A.Gonzalez (10), J.Arrieta (2)
Game #4:  Lorenzo Cain homered in the bottom of the 8th to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Bandicoots to their 4th straight over Valdosta by a squeaky close 2-1 margin. Collin McHugh did a great job on the mound for Valdosta giving their bullpen some much needed rest by going all the way and allowing just five hits in the loss. Doug Fister continued to be strangely effective (must be why the Angels just picked him up) allowing just one unearned run on an error by Travis Shaw in eight innings. He walked two and allowed six hits while striking out seven.
FINAL – BETHESDA 2, VALDOSTA 1
Win-Fister (4-2)
Save-Cishek (17)
Loss-McHugh (3-9)
HR-VAL:none; BET: L.Cain (4)
Game #5:  Thank you. sir. May I have another.
Sure thing.
Bethesda edges Valdosta once again 2-1 thanks to Aledmys Diaz’s two-run homer in the 1st inning off Julio Teheran. That was pretty much it for Bethesda’s offense for the game as they managed just one hit over the rest of the game although more likely cuz Teheran the Terror was throwing nowhere near the plate … he walked seven and fanned just three in the contest. Bethesda led into the top of the 9th 2-0 with Ryan Madson on the mound and as he has been so accustomed to doing lately he gave up the long ball to none other than Chris Carter who bashed his 35th in just 77 games. Thankfully it was a solo shot and Steve Cishek came in and closed things down to get the save.
FINAL – BETHESDA 2, VALDOSTA 1
Win-Hill (7-0)
Save-Cishek (18)
Loss-Teheran (7-5)
HR-VAL: C.Carter (35); BET:A.Diaz (12)
Game #6:  Once again Bethesda’s offense showed up for just one inning, but it was a 5-run first that featured nine batters coming to the plate as they hung on to win over Dillon Gee and company 5-3. Trevor Story accounted for most of the runs with a three run shot REALLY deep into the right field stands. Bethesda starter John Lackey had a perfect game going through to the 6th inning but Leonys Martin crapped all over that and the no-hitter and the shutout with one swing when he launched a ball deep over Tyler Naquin’s head in center field and out of the ballpark. Bethesda had a comfortable 4-run edge going into the 9th but for the second time in the series were burned by former Bandicoot Seth Smith who homered down the left field line with Mark Reynolds aboard.
FINAL – BETHESDA 5, VALDOSTA 3
Win-Lackey (7-3)
Loss-Gee (0-2)
HR-VAL:L.Martin (7), S.Smith (11); BET: T.Story (17)
Series Summary:  Bethesda manages a sweep although a very lucky run as several of the games featured just one inning of offense by the home team and all but one of the games were close. I suppose the greatest victory was keeping Chris Carter to just one home run in the series.

Triple Creek  Patriots @ Long Beach  Dirt Bags

Series Preview:  Long Beach hosts Triple Creek in and NL West battle.
Game #1:  Triple Creek jumped out to a 5-0 lead and hung on for a 6-5 win. Villar and Sardinas had 3 hits each to lead the offense. After Long Beach cut the lead to 1, Strahm came in and shut them down for his 5th save.
Game #2:  Moreland broke open a close game with a 3 run HR in the 7th. He added a 2-run shot in the 9th to make the final score 8-2. Tropeano threw 6 2 hit innings to pick up the win.
Game #3:  Buchholz threw 7 shutout innings as Triple Creek won 2-0. Moreland and Villar drove in the only runs of the game.
Game #4:  Triple Creek again jumped out to an early lead, this time 7-2. Long Beach came back and cut it to 7-6 in the 4th. It stayed that way until Headley hit a solo HR in the 7th for an insurance run. That proved big as Long Beach responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Severino SF but couldn’t push across the tying run and lost 8-7. The Patriots bullpen gave up just 3 hits in 5 1/3 innings after Gravemen was knocked out early.
Game #5:  Lind led off the 7th with a HR breaking a 1-1 tie and giving Long Beach a 2-1 win. Hellickson pitch 7 innings and the Long Beach bullpen pitched 2 eventful but scoreless innings to close out the win. Lind was the whole offense with 2 solo HRs.
Game #6:  Moreland continued to punish the Titans with 2 more HRs and 6 RBI as Triple Creek rolled 14-1. Wood improved to 8-0 and hit a 3 run HR. Headley and Villar added 3 hits each as the Patriots pounded out 19 hits.
Series Summary:  Triple Creek won 5 of the 6 games. Moreland was a Titan killer hitting .368 with 4 HR, 11 RBI and 7 runs scored in just 4 games.

Selkirk  Steelers @ Pittsburgh  Lumber Company

Series Summary:  Pittsburgh takes 6 of 7 from Selkirk.

Series Preview:  Two sub-500 teams square off in Long Valley.
Game #1:  Jersey bats around in the 1st inning and coasts to an 11-1 win.
Game #2:  Jersey scores 4 in the 1st on homers by Murphy and Bruce but doesn’t score again as Grand Haven comes from behind to win 6-4.
Game #3:  The Nor’easters score 3 in the 8th and take the game 4-2.
Game #4:  Two homers and 4 RBI by Daniel Murphy power Jersey to an 8-2 win.
Game #5:  In a see-saw game that took 14 innings to settle Jersey prevails 5-4.
Game #6:  Kirk Nieuwenhuis homers early in the game and Grand Haven makes it stand up winning 2-1.
Game #7:  Ross Stripling wins his 3rd game for Grand Haven 5-2.
Series Summary:  Jersey takes the 7 game series 4-3.

Windy City  Black Sox @ Corktown  Cycle

Series Preview:  The Black Sox head east to Detroit to face off against Corktown for the first time in league history. Hopefully this is the beginning of long NL east rivalry.
Game #1:  This game was all Adam Morgan. He throws a complete game shut out, but also goes 2-3 with 2 Sac bunts at the plate.

Corktown 11-0
W. Adam Morgan 3-7
L. Chad Bettis 5-6

Game #2:  Robbie Ray had two pickoffs in this game, but Windy City was able to hold off a late Cycle hit parade hosted by Fernando Rodney. Kenley Jensen notched his 22 save, and were still a week away from the break.

Windy City 4-3
W. Gio Gonzalez 9-2
L. Robbie Ray 3-9
S. Kenley Jansen (22)

Game #3:  Nolan Arenado played long ball twice in this one. Matt Harvey looked like his old self going the distance allowing two while striking out 10.

Windy City 6-2
W. Matt Harvey 4-4
L. Tom Koehler 5-5

Game #4:  After a nice off day in Detroit, both teams returned to action and Nolen Arranado decided to tack on another big fly. That’s Right.

Windy City 7-2
W. Jake Peavy 2-4
L. Jose DeLeon 2-3

Game #5:  Windy City pounded Colin Rea with a bunch of base hits in the 2nd inning and Cycle manager had to let him ride it out.

Windy City 6-2
W. Jeff Samardzija 8-4
L. Colin Rea 2-10

Game #6:  The Corktown bats woke up after 4 straight losses.

Corktown 9-2
W. Anthony Desclafani 7-2
L. Chad Bettis 5-7

Series Summary:  The rivalry got off to a very shaky start. Only one game worth watching. Meanwhile, Windy City surprisingly remains in the mix for the final NL wild card spot with a very winnable home and home with Grand Haven on the bill next.

Tempe  Tempers @ Sacramento  Capitals

Series Preview:  Tempe heads west with the hope of escaping beautiful California with a split against the red-hot Sacramento Capitals.
Series Summary:  Tempe shrugs.
California drops 5 of 6.
Tempe enjoys a lopsided match up with three extra-inning wins, but fears reprisal when Sacramento heads to the desert shortly after the all-star break.
California whimpers.

Mesa  Solar Sox @ Tijuana  Bottle Rockets

Series Summary:  Tijuana takes the series 5-1

Dallas  Cougars @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview:  Two similar teams with similar records throw a bunch of low grade pitchers at each other.
Game #1:  VIR 11-0
Springer homers among his 3 hits and drives in 4 runs. He gets help from Rizzo’s homer and 2 RBI and Flaherty’s 2 hits and 2 RBI. Tillman gets win #7 with his 11 K’s,
Game #2:  VIR 6-2
T.Williams scatters 6 hits and K’s 10. Sluggers pound out 14 hits,…all singles. Segura goes 4-5 with 2 RBI and Rizzo 2-4 with 2 RBI. Franklin goes deep for Dallas.
Game #3:  VIR 8-2
Rizzo and Bradley leave the yard and combine for 5 RBI to give Perdomo his 6th win. A.Wilkins launches his 9th homer of the year for Dallas.
Game #4:  DAL 6-5
The Cougars finally put a win on the board. A.Warren pitched 3 strong innings of middle relief to up his record to 4-0. Gyorko gave DAL a 2-0 lead with a 2-run blast in the 2nd but a 4-run 4th put VIR back on top. DAL retook the lead with a 2 run 7th and then VIR tied it up in the 8th. The big blow came for DAL in the 9th when M.Martinez launched his 2nd homer of the game (and the year) and Wilhelmsen came out of the pen to close the door with the winning run at bat.
Game #5:  DAL 9-2
To prove their previous win was not a mistake, DAL knocked out 16 hits to tally 9 runs. Every starter had at least 1 hit. D.Butera was 3-5 with 3 RBI and N.Franklin was 2-5 with a run and a solo homer.

Columbus  Explorers @ Rosemere  Renegades

Series Preview:  One team fighting for a playoff spot while the other … well…
Series Summary:  Columbus takes 4 out of 6.

Hollywood  Werewolves @ Motor City  Muscle

Series Preview:  Hollywood @ Motor City for a 6 game series

Two teams with good lineups but thin rotations.

Game #1:  MCM 6 – HOL 5

WP: Kahnle
LP: Dyson

HR: HOL–Goldschmidt, Ortiz, Kinsler

HOL started the game with back-to-back solo shots, but MCM came back with four runs in the bottom of the 1st, with three scoring on a Sal Perez bases-loaded double. HOL took the lead again with single runs in the 2nd and 3rd (with Kinsler giving away curly fries with his solo blast). Then the bullpens threw zeroes at each other until the 9th, when Trout and Orlando hit RBI singles to win it for MCM.

Game #2:  MCM 4 – HOL 3 (11 inn.)

WP: Diekman
LP: O’Rourke

HR: HOL–C. GOnzalez; MCM–Castellanos

Once again, HOL jumped out to an early lead on the strength of the long ball (Gonzo’s three-run shot in the 4th). Trout knocked in two with a double in the 6th, which set Castellanos up for some 9th inning heroics. Nick hit a two-out solo shot to tie it up and send it into extra innings. Jason Werth knocked in the winning run with a single in the 11th.

Game #3:  MCM 8 – HOL 1

WP: Zimmermann
LP: Price

HR: HOL–W. Castillo; MCM–Orlando

This one was all MCM, as Zimmermann went seven strong innings. Paulo Orlando hit a two-run shot in the first and MCM never looked back. MCM scored three in the 4th and two in the 5th to put it out of reach.

Game #4:  MCM 5 – HOL 3

WP: Verlander
LP: Hammell
SV: Harris

HR: HOL–Kinsler, Ortiz; MCM–Castellanos, Perez

The wind was blowing out in the Motor City, as the teams combined for four homers. Neither starter was sharp, but both pitched deep into the game.

Game #5:  HOL 5 – MCM 2

WP: Kershaw
LP: de Grom

HR: HOL–Ortiz, A. Cabrera; MCM–C. Young

Kershaw handled everyone in the MCM lineup but Chris Young, who had both Muscle RBI. Early home runs again accounted for the difference. Ortiz had three RBI in the game.

Game #6:  HOL 4 – MCM 3

WP: Neshek
LP: Diekman
SV: Dyson

HR: HOL–Ortiz (2); MCM–Moss

THis one was wild. HOL’s first tun scored on a one-out Trout three base error on GOldschmidt’s 1st inning single. MCM’s first run scored on a steal of home by Jose Ramires in the 3rd inning. From then on the scoring was a little more conventional: Ortiz solo HR in the 4th, answered by Sal Perez’s sac fly in the bottom of the inning. Moss ave MCM the lead in the 6th with his solo HR. Then, three different MCM pitchers couldn’t get the third out as Goldschmidt was walked to force home the tying run. Ortiz gave HOL the lead with his fifth homer of the series, and Dyson came in for the save after Neshek pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Series Summary:  MCM takes the series 4 games to 2

Three bullpen games, with two extra inning games.

David Ortiz carried Hollywood in the series, especially the final two games. For the series, he hit .384 (10-26, with 7 R, 3 doubles, five HRs, and 6 RBI. Three of the HRs, and five of the RBI were in HOL’s two wins in Games 5 and 6.

Sal Perez only had four hits in the series, but he made them count, collecting 8 RBI on three doubles and a HR.

HOL hit 11 HRs to MCM’s 6

Detroit  Crime @ Coconut Creek  Crushers

Series Summary:  Detroit sweeps on the road.

Manhattan  Project @ Southbend  Lynx

Series Preview:  Manhattan visits Southbend fora 7 game series.
Series Summary:  Southbend can’t solve the Manhattan starting pitching as MAN takes the series 6-1. Southbend did manage two other close games other than their lone win, but the series was pretty much dominated by Manhattan.
