Columbus  Explorers @ Windy City  Black Sox

Series Preview:  A couple of 2nd place NL clubs meet in the Windy City.
Game #1:  Explorers grab an unearned run in the 2nd when Gio Gonzalez makes a bad throw to first on what should have been the third out of the inning. But the Sox tie it up on a Carlos Beltran homer to lead off the bottom of the inning.

More mistakes for the home team in the third. A wild pitch with the runner going puts a runner at third. Then a walk and a steal makes it 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Nunez goes down looking. Then Desmond hits a fly to Beltran in right, who bobbles it. Two runs score and Desmond ends up on 2nd. The next two go down and its 3-1 Columbus.

Black Sox come back in the 4th doing what they do best, hitting the ball over the fence. Arenado and Beltran go back to back to tie the game. Sox take the lead on a McCann solo shot in the 6th.

But the Sox pen can’t hold the lead. Explorers score three in the 8th off Ogando and Hembree to take a 6-4 lead.

Watson allows two base runners in the 9th but gets Belt to end the game.

Final Columbus 6 Windy City 4

Game #2:  Columbus with an early crooked number as they score 3 in the 2nd against Matt Harvey. No change until Russell Martin goes yard in the 7th to make it 4-0 Explorers.

In the bottom of the 7th the Sox load the bases with one out. Alexei Ramirez delivers a two run pinch hit single. Then Rajai Davis knocks one in on a pinch hit fielders choice, then steals second to make it 2nd and 3rd. But Gardner and Saunders pop out with the tying run at third. 4-3 Columbus after seven innings.

Sox get the tying run to 2nd with one out in the 9th but Watson escapes again.

Final: COL 4 WC 3

Game #3:  Columbus gets two in the first and one in the second and that proves to be enough for Josh Tomlin, who goes the distance allowing just a solo shot to McCann in the 9th inning.

Final: COL 3 WC 1

Game #4:  More of the same. Explorers get single runs in the 2nd and 3rd. Shoemaker tosses a complete game, one hit shutout.

Final: COL 2 WC 0

Game #5:  Columbus strikes first again with two in the first. Sox answer with two in the 4th on Beltran’s third homer of the series.

Explorers take the lead in the 8th as Nunez reaches, steals second and scores on Carpenter’s single. On the play Nunez ran over McCann, who is lost for 15 days.

KRod and Watson close it out.

Final: COL 3 WC 2

Game #6:  Explorers leave the bases loaded in the top of the first. Sox score a run with two outs on a Beltran double.

Explorers take the lead with two in the 3rd but once again leave the bases loaded. Sox come right back with two in the bottom of the inning.

Explorers come up empty with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 4th. Gio really pitching through traffic for Windy City.

Sox tack one on in the 6th on Castro’s triple but strand him at third.

Hembree and Jansen lock it down for Gio and the Sox avoid the sweep.
Final: WC 4 COL 2

Series Summary:  It remains feast or famine for the Black Sox. They go three straight lopsided series, one bad, one good, one bad.

Southwest Detroit  Fighting Chihuahuas @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview:  Virginia, coming off 4 wins at Mesa takes on Southwest Detroit after they are swept by Hollywood. Neither team having a good year, but both looking to get a few wins in this series.
Game #1:  SWD 2 – 4 -0 L – Moore (3-6) HR – Weiters (6), O,Arcia (2)
VIR 4 – 11 -0 W- Tillman (6-4) HR – Rizzo (6)
Virginia takes the opening game behind Chris Tillman. Tillman throws a CG and strikes out 10 while only walking 1. Anthony Rizzo led the offensive attack by going 3-4 with a longball and 3 RBI. 7 of 9 starters got hits for Virginia. J.Segura and T.Cruz were the only Sluggers to NOT get a hit. Weiters and Arcia were the only bright spots for the Fighting Chihuahuas as they both clubbed solo shots for SWD’s only runs.
Game #2:  SWD 2 – 8 – 0 L- V.Nuno (2-3) HR – none
VIR 5 – 10 – 1 W- D.Wright (3-4) HR – Segura (6)
Virginia took control of the game in the 3rd inning and quickly jumped out to a 2-0 series lead. Most of the damage in this game came from the first two batters in Virginia’s lineup. J.Segura had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and drove in 2 runs. N.Markakis had 2 hits, scored 1 and knocked in 1. Weiters and Jankowski had 2 hits each for Southwest Detroit.
Game #3:  SWD 1 – 11 – 0 L- J.Gray (4-5) HR- P.Alvarez (10)
VIR 3 – 9 – 0 W-T.Williams (3-3) SV-Cahill (8) HR- C.Santana (9)
Virginia takes a 3-0 series lead even though they are outhit by Southwest Detroit in game 3. Gray pitched well for SWD except for the 5th inning. An RBI double by N.Markakis preceded a C.Santana 2-run jimmy-jack that gave Virginia all they needed as Williams and the bullpen held on for the win.
Game #4:  SWD 0 – 6 – 0 L- D.Smyly (1-5) HR- none
VIR 4 – 11 – 1 W-M.Morin (2-0) HR- C.Santana (10)
Another Virginia win as N.Markakis knocks in 3 runs on 2 hits and C.Santana pokes his 10th homer. But it was the pitching that got the win. C.Archer was breezing along with a 1-hitter in the fifth when he felt something in his arm and had to come out. He will be lost to the Sluggers for 8 days. However, the bullpen stepped up and shut down the Fighting Chihuahuas for the remainder of the game and preserved the Virginia win.
Game #5:  SWD 9 – 15 – 0 W-M.Moore (4-6) Sv- V,Nuno (1) HR- P.Tucker (2)
VIR 5 – 8 – 0 L-L.Permodo (3-4) HR- C.Santana (11)
Southwest Detroit finally breaks through. Virginia jumped out 3-0 in the 1st inning and then SWD started to roll. P.Tucker highlighted a 4 run 2nd inning with his 2nd home run of the year to give SWD a lead they would not relinquish. They put the game away in the 5th on a bases loaded triple by O.Arcia. All total, the Fighting Chihuahuas cranked out 15 hits. Among the notables; Swanson 3-6, Ellsbury 3-5, Arcia 2-5 4 RBI, and Tucker 2-5 3 RBI.
Game #6:  SWD 6 – 10 – 0 W J.Gray (5-5) Sv- D.Guerra (7) HR- none
VIR 4 – 9 – 1 L- J.de la Rosa (2-6) HR- none
To prove their win in game 5 was not a fluke, Southwest Detroit did it again. J.Gray scattered 6 hits over 7 innings and punched out 10 batters to get the win and even his record at 5-5. To put runs on the board, the Chihuahuas turned to 5 different batters to get their runs. Heading the list was M.Weiters, who had 2 RBI. D.Guerra came in for the last out to preserve the victory for SWD.
Series Summary:  After surprisingly winning the first 4 games of the series, Virginia finally fell to Southwest Detroit in the final two games but still managed a 4-2 series win. Matt Weiters had a good series for SWD as he batted .429 in a 9-21 performance with a HR and 4 RBI. For the home team Sluggers, Carlos Santana hit .364 as he went 8-22 with 3 HR and 8 RBI.
