Valdosta  Snappers @ Bethesda  Bandicoots
Series Preview
Third-place Valdosta is hosted by Bethesda
Game #1:

A pitching mismatch of Matt Wisler versus Jake Arrieta turns out with the expected results but via an unexpected path as Arrieta homers in the 2nd inning to help his cause in an easy 8-1 Bethesda win over Valdosta. Arrieta (12-8) stayed in five innings, just long enough to get the win with the bullpen taking the rest of the way. Leonys Martin hit his 4th of the year for Valdosta which was one of only three hits for the Snappers on the day. Carlos Ruiz had two hits
and the same number of RBIs for Bethesda with Adrian Gonzalez and Alex Rodriguez getting the day off. The win was a costly one for Bethesda. In the first of several injuries in the series, Travis Shaw was gimped for 11 days after being Wisler-ed.

Game #2: Valdosta’s tenacious offense would not be denied as they stormed back from an early deficit to even the series with a 6-5 victory. Adrian Gonzalez started things off the right way with a three-run blast off Valdosta starter Colby Lewis to open the game, but then Tyson Ross started a crapfest in the 2nd inning that continued through the 5th and handed the Snappers the game. For Ross, it was a case of lousy pitching and equally lousy bullpen management by yours truly who gave Ross just enough extra leash to hang himself on. It also meant relegation to the bullpen for the Padres’ pitcher after this series. Former  Bandicoot Seth Smith had three hits and Leonys Martin three RBIs for the Snappers. Lewis (10-11) allowed five runs – three earned – on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in six innings. Craig Kimbrel was flawless in the 9th and nailed down his 23rd save. Ross dropped to 7-9 after allowing all the runs to score on 10 hits in just over four innings and saw his ERA rise to over 4.00. Chris Carter (20) and Leonys Martn (5) went deep for Valdosta. Gonzalez (25) and Ethier (12) countered in a losing effort for Bethesda.
Game #3: Another brilliant managerial decision in which Sonny Gray was pulled for a pinch hitter (Chris Colabello) who popped out in the bottom of the 5th turned a comfortable 4-1 lead into a bullpen asshole ripping wide open 16-6 shit-kicking at the hands of the Snappers. The Snappers mauled mercilessly relievers John Axford, Steve Cishek and Zach Lee for 12 runs in the 6th inning with Lee staying in for some good ol’ fashion ass-whipping for over three innings as he fought to meet his usage requirement. Omar Infante had four hits and scored three times while Miguel Sano (12), Seth Smith (12), and Aaron Altherr (7) clubbed four-baggers for Valdosta – Smith actually only finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. AJ Pierzynski was a perfect 3/3 and Alex Rodriguez 2/2 for Bethesda. Adrian Gonzalez (26) and Jimmy Paredes (6) homered for Bethesda. The loss was handed to Cishek (2-3) for his yeoman-like 2/3 of an inning of futility in which he gave up six runs on five hits and a walk. Disgusting or what? Robbie Ross was in the right place at the right time to earn the win and even his record at 1-1.
Game #4: Alex Rodriguez smacked a three-run blast into the ionosphere in the 8th off Fernando Rodriguez to complete a come-from-behind 5-2 win for Bethesda. It was A-Rod’s 26th of the year. Adonis Garcia (11) homered for Valdosta. Collin McHugh tossed a fine seven innings of three-hit ball for Valdosta, but wound up losing the win thanks to the Rodriguez’s efforts. Doug Fister turned a surprisingly strong seven-plus innings of work and allowed just two runs. Brian Matusz (1-4) took a page from Robbie Ross’s book in the previous game and got the win after getting one out in the 8th. Rich Hill picked up his 16th save in what would have to be called a successful experiment in moving him from the rotation to the closer role in Bethesda.
Game #5: More bullpen mismanagement with Steve Cishek at the centre again with Valdosta stomping back from a 5-1 shortage to win it 7-6. Miguel Sano had three hits including his 13th homer to lead the way for Valdosta. Chris Young became the 2nd starter this series victimized by my misplaced confidence, leaving with a comfortable 5-1 lead only to have it turn to shit largely due to the ineptitude of Steve Cishek. Cishek didn’t get the loss though – that honor went to Brian Matusz (1-5) whose return from an extended stay in the minors included allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while getting only one out. Julio Teheran (15-7) was lousy – five runs on 8 hits and three walks in just five innings – but he was good enough to get the win with Craig Kimbrel once again
saving the day with his 24th. AJ Pierzynski continued to hit for Bethesda going 3/6 with 3 RBIs including his 7th homer. Andre Ethier hit his 2nd of the series and 13th of the year for Bethesda as well. David Peralta went down to a minor one-game injury after being plunked by Fernando Rodriguez.
Game #6: The rematch of the series opening pitching mismatch almost defied the odds makers after Valdosta opened things up scoring twice in the 1st inning off Jake Arrieta, but a three-run 3rd inning against Matt Wisler saved the Bethesda hides and they hung on to win 4-2. Matt (the C-sucker) Wisler continued his massacre of Bethesda hitters, beaning both Lorenzo Cain and Anthony Rendon and knocking them out for 5 and 23 days respectively. Valdosta only managed three hits on the day against Arrieta (13-8) and closer Rich Hill (save #17). Matt den Dekker, AJ Pierzynski and Chris (Cheater) Colabello each had two hits for the Bandicoots.
Series Summary
Bethesda and Valdosta split a hard fought series with the Snappers easily coming out ahead on the bloodshed front having sent four Bandicoots to the infirmary.

Selkirk  Steelers @ Jersey  Nor’easters

Top two teams in the AL East.

Game #1:

DAL 5 – MCM 0

Game #2:

DAL 3 – MCM 0

WP: Corbin (CG)
LP: Leake

HR: none

Another dominant pitching performance for Dallas, as Corbin scatters four hits while going the distance.

Game #3:

DAL 5 – MCM 3

WP: Warren

Dallas uses the longball to down Motor City. Warren out pitches deGrom because, sure, why not? Motor City finally scores, with Crawford driving in two.

Game #4:

MCM 5 – DAL 2

WP: ZImmermann
LP: C. Anderson
SV: Ramos

HR: MCM–Crawford, Aybar

Motor City comes through with three late runs to snag a win.

Game #5:

DAL 5 – MCM 3

Game #6:

DAL 4 – MCM 3

WP: Alvarez
LP: Rosenthal
SV: Lowe

HR: DAL–Solarte, Francoeur; MCM–Panik

No scoring before the 6th inning, then all hell broke loose. MCM jumped to a 2-0 lead, but DAL tied it with single runs in the 7th and 8th. Panik homered to give MCM the lead in the 8th but Grimm could not hold it, giving up a Francoeur solo shot to tie it. That man Solarte got the game-winning RBI in the 10th off Rosenthal.

Series Summary
DAL wins the series 5 games to 1, most likely ending MCM’s hopes for a division title.
Solarte hit .360, with 3 runs, 3 HRs, and 7 RBI in the series.
Dallas had 8 HRs total in the series.
Lackey and Corbin both had CG shutouts for Dallas
Mark Lowe saved 3 games for Dallas

Clovis  Wheat Kings @ Columbus  Explorers
Series Preview
The Clovis Wheat Kings check into Columbus on a hot and humid weekend for a six game series. The Wheat Kings are trying to wrap up a wild-card spot while the Explorers continue on cloud nine but are facing the ever charging team from Az – that team not to be mentioned, but in the words of the Sacramento franchise, that AZ team is from the Dark Side. Columbus hopes for help this week as that team not to be mentioned is visiting Sacramento. NOTE: although those Capitals have offered some help, those same Capitals have become the ragging team in the NL as of late.
Game #1:
Very tight game as the Explorers take a 1-0 lead into the 8th thanks to a 5th inning solo HR (6) from Tyler FLowers. Jungman and Santana in a marvelous duel. But in the bottom of the 8th, with Watson in in relief, the bottom falls out for Clovis as Choo clubs a 3 run HR (17) and the Explorers go on to a 5-1 win. CWK 1-7-0 LP Jungmann (7-5)
COL 5-6-0 WP Santana (7-5)
Wheat King run scored on solo HR (8) by Phillips in 9th (off newly acquired David Robertson)
Game #2:
Cruz gets a 1st inning walk and then scores on a 2 out single by Belt to make it 1-0 Wheat Kings. But that was the end of the road for Clovis as Columbus scores 4 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd and 2 more in the 7th to destroy Samardzija and company. Enrique Hernandez has big day going 2 for 3 (and HBP), with a HR (6) and 4 rbis. Milone tosses 3 hitter over 6 innings.
CWK 1-5-1 LP Samardzija (10-5)
COL 9-9-0 WP Milone (8-4)
Game #3:
Harvey vs. Happ and it’s a great duel. Columbus gets one in the 4th and another in the 6th – Gordon gets 2 hits, a double and HR (6) and scores both runs as Columbus wins 2-0. Tough news was Belt getting belted by pitch in 1st and will miss 5 days.
CWK 0-6-0 LP Harvey (12-8)
COL 2-4-0 WP Happ (16-3) S Rodriguez (21)
Game #4:
Richards vs. Dickey and R.Davis greets Dickey with a lead-off HR (4). In the 4th the Wheat Kings make it 2-0 when they take advantage of a Blackmon error. But the Explorers get those 2 right back in the bottom half and then plate the winner in the 7th. O’Day pitches the final 2 for the save.
CWK 2-3-1 LP Richards (10-11)
COL 3-5-1 WP Dickey (10-10) S O’Day (21 – 16th for COL)
Game #5:
Liriano vs. Rusin (league surprise pitcher just trying to get his time in). Crawford takes Rusin deep in the 4th (22) for a 1-0 lead. That was Rusin’s only hiccup as he goes 6 giving up 5 hits and 1 run. In the 6th the Explorers score 3, add another in the 7th and 4 relievers keep the score at 4-1.
CWK 1-7-2 LP Liriano (12-5)
COL 4-5-2 WP Rusin (8-1) S Rodriguez (22)
Game #6:
In the final, it’s Jungmann vs. Santana again. Columbus gets 4 in the 2nd starting with a Carpenter HR (29) and Jungmann having some control issues. Santana on the other hand was near perfect through 8 but in the 9th gave up a walk and 2 run HR (23) to Crawford and needed some help from O’Day and he got it.
CWK 2-3-0 LP Jungmann (7-6)
COL 4-8-3 WP Santana (8-5) S O’Day (22)
Series Summary
Columbus manages another sweep – timely hitting and running has been the big key and a lot of bullpen help. Wheat Kings outhit the Explores in half the games – but there really wasn’t alot of hitting during the series. Columbus travels to Valdosta next week and Clovis hosts Corktown.
