Corktown  Cycle @ Columbus  Explorers
Series Preview
NL East Corktown Cycle (35-56) comes to NL Central leading Columbus Explorers (69-21) for a six game showdown. You’d think it might be an easy week for Columbus, but a lot of their wins have been comebacks and skin of their teeth type. Will this week be any different?
Game #1:
Hellickson and Happ and it’s a showdown, neither pitcher getting a decision. Callaspo drives in 2 in the 5th for a 2-1 Corktown lead but Columbus plates 3 in the 8th and Rodriquez saves the game after Chafin gives up a solo HR (3) to Chirinos in the 9th.
CRK 3- 9-1 LP Treinen (1-3) BS (1)
COL 4-12-1 WP Chafin (6-2) S Rodriguez (17)
Game #2:
Columbus needs another late rally (2 in the 7th) to force the game into FREE baseball time. Game ends in 10th when Gordon triples, Revere bounces to Lamahieu and they hold Gordon but Revere reaches 2nd. Blackmon is walked to get to Carpenter???? Carpenter hits SF – game over. LaMahieu homers (2) and Andrus gets 2 rbis. NOTE: Scheduled starter was still fatigued (as were all the other starters) and Treinen was selected to start.
CRK 6- 7-0 LP Araujo (0-2) BS Diekman (1) (10 Innings)
COL 7-15-1 WP GilMartin (6-0)
Game #3:
Another late rally for a Columbus win as they score 2 in the 8th to pull it out, 6-5. Explores were up 4-0 after a 4 run 3rd and Dickey was feeling good – too good apparently as he then gives up 5 runs in the 4th – 4 of them were unearned as results of errors by the battery of Avila and Dickey. Orlando hits 2 run triple, LeMahieu and Asche get 2 hits. Shreve the late victim with both a blown save and loss. Zimmerman and Reimold each had 3 hits.
CRK 5- 6-0 LP Shreve (2-6) BS (3)
COL 6-11-2 WP Dunn (1-0) S Rodriguez (18)
Game #4:
One of only 2 games that were not 1 run affairs – the Explorers score early and often in a 9-0 runaway. Odd fact, Rusin again pitched an effective game going 8 innings, 4 hits and no runs. Romine (in for an ejected Zimmerman) gets 3 hits as does Blackmon. Carpenter bangs #26.
CRK 0- 4-1 LP Koehler (5-8)
COL 9-14-1 WP Rusin (5-1)
Game #5: Back to 1 run games and more FREE baseball as game goes 10 innings. Both team score twice in 1st as Andrus (walk), Asche (single) and Hosmer (double) start off the game. Carpenter ties it with a two run jack (27). Corktown regains the lead in the 2nd on a Taylor rbi single after a Rios double. Columbus ties the game in the 7th with a PH rbi double from Enrique Hernandez. Then in the 10th with 2 outs Blackmon reaches on an error by Adames. He steals 2nd. Carpenter then gets HBP. Zimmerman walks to load them up and Reimold steps in (0 for 4 with 3 Ks so far) and he singles to end the game.
CRK 3-5-1 LP Diekman (0-6) 10 Innings
COL 4-9-0 WP O’Day (6-0)
Game #6:
Finally some happy news for the Corktown Cycle – and the HAPPY news comes at the expense of J.A. Happ. Corktown gets a run in the 1st and 2nd – Columbus gets one back in the 2nd. But then Corktown goes partying in the 5th scoring 4, single runs in the 6th, 7th and 2 more in the 9th. Hosmer was the biggest gun with 3 hits, 2 homers (7,8) and 5 rbis! Hellickson goes 6 giving up 8 hits and only 1 run. Late Choo homer (15) make it almost look close – NO IT NEVER LOOKED close.
CRK 10-14-0 WP Hellickson (5-9)
COL 3-13-2 LP Happ (12-2)
Series Summary
Columbus takes 5 of 6 and will await the arrival of Bethesda (NL East leader). Corktown goes home to host Grand Haven. ODD STAT – the Columbus bullpen is 27-2 with 32 saves. Smoke and mirrors, but we’re liking it.
