Opening Day, we’re all contenders today.

Game #1:

Jersey can’t overcome a 4 run 1st inning by Motor City and drops the opener 9-6.

More shaky pitching by both Jersey and Motor City as both starters, Lincecum for Jersey and Morton for the Muscle give up all 9 runs in a 5-4 Motor City win.

Game #3:

Enny Romero makes his 1st and only appearance of the year for Jersey and comes away a winner 6-3.

Tim Lincecum redeems himself in game 6 and pitches a strong game in a 6-2 Jersey win.

With the series tied 3-3 it was Motor City’s Charlie Morton’s turn to redeem himself and he did. Jersey’s shaky defense gave the game away in a 6-3 Motor City win.

Series Summary *

Motor City takes the opening series 4-3. It should be noted that some guy with a fish name for Motor City, Trout I believe had 14 hits and 3 walks in the series. Looks like he might be pretty good.

·Tempe Tempers @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview

Season opener – MWBL Champs Temps come to “friendly” rival Columbus for the opening series in what for all practical purposes looks like a blow out series. Well fans, Columbus win the series 5 games to 2! Yes, 5 games to 2 – well if SCORING first in the game were important. The Explorers put up the first run in 5 of the 7 games … let’s see how they finished ….

Game #1:

Home town fans excited D.Solano drives in Ian Desmond in the 2nd for 1-0 lead. Howerver, it was short lived as Harrell loses his stuff in the 3rd and the Tempers plate 4. They go on to add 4 more including a 3 run HR (1) by Cespedes to gain an 8-1 lead. Chacin (W 1-0) goes 5.0 before being pulled by Belliard 2 – and 3 relievers keep the Explorers in check. Harrell (0-1) takes the loss. And you should have seen AGon legging out a 3 run triple!
– 20 Tempers made it into the lineup in this opening day event!

Game #2:

Redemption coming fast in game 2 as Explorers get 1 in the first when Victorino drives in De Aza (2 for 5, double and triple in this game). But J.A. Happ can’t hold onto the 1-0 lead for long surrendering 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and another in the 5th as Tempe gets into a 4-1 lead. Morales, Cano and Beltre drive in 3 of the runs, and leadoff hitter Braun scores of them (and belts a triple).
Final ends up being 4-1 – Iwakuma W (1-0) goes 6 innings and Crain pitches the 9th for the save (1). Happ (0-1) gets the loss.

Game #3:

Columbus scores 1 in the 3rd on an Avila HR (1) and 2 in the 5th on a Carpenter 2 run double. Up 3-0, Milone (1-0) and 3 relievers keep the Tempers tempered. Chen, Oberholtzer and Stinson (S 1) face 9 batters over the final 3 innings to preserve the 3-0 shutout! 3 hits given up my Milone and 6 Ks.
Colon (0-1) takes the loss going 7 innings giving up 7 hits, 0 walks and 4 Ks.

Game #4:

Tempe finally scores first and in a big way plating 4 runs in the first of newcomer and loser Rusin (0-1). He lasts 4.2 innings giving up 2 more as the Tempers pound out 18 hits and score 11 runs. When Columbus answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st it looked hopeful, but it was to be. Cain righted the ship, went 5 innings (5 hits, 2 runs – BUT 5 WALKS – and 3 ks).
Braun, Morales, Beltre, and Tulowitzki had 3 hits each. Beltre 4 rbis and 2 HRs (1,2), Tulo had 3 rbis and 2 HRs (1, 2)

Game #5:

After Columbus gets off to a 1-0 lead in the fist (what’s new), the Tempers come back with 3 in the 3rd and another in 4th enroute to a 5-1 victory. W. Chen goes 6 for the win (1-0) giving up 5 hits and fanning 6. Granderson cracks his 1st HR of the year and scores 2 run. AGon, leading off goes 2 for 4 with a walk.

Game #6:

Tight 0-0 game going into the 4th, Chacin and B.Chen both looking sharp. But then things went south for the home team as the Tempers erupt for 6 runs in the 4th (sending Chen (L 0-1) to the showers early). Braun gets 3 hits, Beltre, Soriano (HR 1), and Ruiz each get 2 hits. Chacin pitches 8.2 innings in this one to go to 2-0. J.Johnson comes in in the 9th for the final out. Final score: Tempe 7, Columbus 0.

Game #7: The finale was probably the most exciting game. Columbus again off to a quick 1-0 lead in the first on a Carpenter rbi double. Tulowitzki ties it in the 2nd on a solo HR (3). Game proceeds to the 7th when Tempe finally decides to break the log jam. Cabrera a bases loaded SF gets 1. Beltre drives in 2 on a bases loaded single. Ike Davis, PH for Tulo, singles to RF to end the Tempers 4 run 7th, Tempe now up 5-1. Holland in to pitch the 7th, walks D. Soloano. Young then singles him to 3rd, runners on the corners no outs. With 1 down, Victorino hits a SF to plate 1, 5-2. De Aza then lines one to rf and Young comes all the way around to score making it 5-3. Holland leaves the game pitching .2 innings giving up a wlak and 2 hits and a K. Granderson leads off the 8th with his 2nd HR of the season, 6-3 Tempe. Bottom half, with 2 outs, Avila hits one over the wall (2) to make it 6-4. However, Crain comes in in the 9th and fans all three batters to pr eserve the 6-4 lead and earn his 2nd save.
WP Iwakuma (2-0), LP Harrell (0-2)
Series Summary * So, in the end it was a 6-1 series win for Tempe (much as expected). But the new season has begun – looks like a good chance for the Tempers to challenge keeping their throne. Explorers however, are planning on being a scrappy team who can sneak up on most (not all) teams!!

Just a few Tempers numbers for the series:
Morales goes 6 for 16 (.375) with 6 walks (.575 obp), scores 5 times.
Tulowitzki – goes berserk 17 PA in 7 games, 7 for 16 with 3 doubles and 3 HR, 5 runs, 4 rbis. .438/.471/1.188 with OPS of 1.658!!!!
Beltre hits .357 and gets 8 rbis (and 2 HRs)
Granderson – 2 HRs, .462 avg.

Game #6:

Lester pitched a 6 hit shutout and drove in a run in the Long Beach 3-0 win. Gennett gave him all the runs he would need when he hit a 2 run HR in the 4th.

Game #7:

After Pujols and Parra traded 2 run HRs in the first, the pitchers, Miley and Bedard, took over and shut down the bats. It was still 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th when Grossman threw out Span at the plate. In the 12th Hoes singled in Span to give Long Beach a 3-2 win. Hoes had 4 hits and the game winning RBI for the Dirt Bags.

Series Summary *

Long Beach wins 5 of 7 in this series between 2 teams who look like they will struggle to score runs.

· Fremont Cannons @ Dallas Cougars

Series Preview

Opening week! Can Dallas avoid 100 plus losses?

Game #1: In the bottom of the first Ellis doubles home Blanco to give Dallas a 1-nothing lead. The Cougars extend their lead in the 4th with a little two out magic. Lucas singled home Rasmus and after a Overbay double Hundley stepped to the plate, “LUCAS steps off third … the pitch comes in … HUNDLEY crushes it … this one is launched SWISHER can only watch it … a three-run homer for HUNDLEY he almost tore the cover off the ball … NICASIO hung one … and HUNDLEY made him pay … So HUNDLEY wins this round with a three-run homer … his 1st home run of the season.” It was more than enough for Cougar starter, Corbin who pitched a complete game 6 hit shutout striking out 11.
FINAL SCORE: COUGARS 5, CANNONS 0
Game #2: After his hat trick of 3 K’s in game 1, Fremont third baseman, Johnson quickly redeemed himself in the top of the first, “DeJESUS stretching his lead … now the delivery … that’s hit … back and deep the other way
back … back… … back…… … oh, man, it’s long gone! a two-run shot over the right center field wall … JOHNSON will touch all the bases and he’s sure taking his time … he’s greeted at the plate … So JOHNSON has his 1st homer of the season … the CANNONS have their first two runs and the CANNONS go ahead by two 2-0 … here in the 1st … and that’s his 1st hit this season.” (Apparently Chris Berman was a guest commentator with the triple back call)
Chavez cuts the lead in half for Dallas in the 4th with a two out single, but the Cannons go back up by two runs with a sac fly in the 6th. Dallas loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 8th and pinch hitter Maxwell delivered a single to tie the game at 3. Fremont reliever Farquhar wiggles out of the jam to keep the game tied. Neither team could do anything in the 9th so we headed to extra innings. In the top of the 10th DeJesus doubles with one out and the man who started the scoring in the top of the first came to the dish, “DeJESUS stretches his lead off second … and the pitch … hit like a shot … ELLIS waves on it but it’s by him into right … DeJESUS rounds third they’re waving DeJESUS in … here comes the throw home here’s the play at the plate … and he’s … out!…just missed getting in go to town, COUGARS! … they cut off the go-ahead run!” In the bottom of the 11th with one out and runners on the corners, Da llas second baseman, Ellis delivers the winning hit.
FINAL SCORE: COUGARS 4, CANNONS 3

Game #3:

Both starting pitchers give up a run in the first inning then Blanco gives Dallas a 2-1 lead with a single in the second – and that would conclude the scoring for the day as the two pitchers duked it out for 7 plus innings. The Cougars had 2 more assists from their outfielders as Dallas starts 2014 off with a 3 game winning streak.
FINAL SCORE: COUGARS 2, CANNONS 1

Game #4:

A single by Pollock gives Dallas a 1-0 lead after the first inning. After both teams get a run in the third the Cannons tie the game in the 5th on a triple by Gomez after Iannetta began the inning with a walk. They had a chance for more, but the 3rd batter of the inning lined into a 4-5 doubleplay eliminating speedy Gomez. Dallas scores a run in the 6th off a single by Overbay and another run in the 7th off a single by Chavez.
FINAL SCORE: COUGARS 4, CANNONS 2

Game #5:

The Cannons blast two Baltimore specials in the first two frames by Swisher and Gomez en route to an early 7 to 1 advantage. The Cougars began pecking away at the lead pulling to within two at 7 to 5, but Fremont got a couple of two out ribbie singles in the 8th to put the game away as the claim their first victory of the season.
FINAL SCORE: CANNONS 9, COUGARS 6

Game #6:

It was all Dallas in this one as Corbin pitched another gem although he only went 6 innings and the Dallas offense mashed 5 doubles and a triple.
FINAL SCORE: COUGARS 7, CANNONS 1

Game #7: An errant throw by Arias for Dallas helped Fremont scored 3 runs in the top of the first. Rasmus got one run back in the bottom of the first with a two-out single and Blanco brought the Cougars within one run with a two-out ribbie-single in the 2nd. The Cougars leaped into the lead in the 3rd with two more two out hits by Arias and Overbay to go up 4 to 3. Yet again in the 4th the Dallas hitters came through with two outs. Rasmus singled home a run and then after a pitching change Doumit clubbed a three-run homer just inside the right field foul pole. Fremont makes things interesting in the 8th with a two out three run homer of their own off the bat of Rosario, but Dallas held on to win.
FINAL SCORE: COUGARS 9, CANNONS 6

Series Summary *

It’s early, but Dallas ends the first week of the 2014 season in first place in the AL East. After a rough first two seasons Dallas fans are going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Virginia Sluggers @ Southbend Lynx

Series Preview

Virginia visits Southbend to open the season.
Southbend had hopes of building on last season’s Wild Card victory only to see poor performances and injuries take their toll. Now Southbend is looking at a long season and the potential of being in the lottery.
On to Opening Day…. That special time of the Year!!

Game #1:

VIR M.Scherzer vs. SBL D.Holland
VIR strikes first with a 2-run 2b by Ramirez in the 4th. SBL take a surprising 3-2 lead in the 5th on a Barmes rbi-2b and a Molina 2-run 1b. But VIR was not to be denied as they took the lead back in the 7th on a N.Walker 3-run HR. SBL gets one back in the 8th when Crisp bbs, steals 2nd, goes to 3rd on Santana’s throwing error, and scores on a WP. But Carpenter would come on in the 9th for VIR and preserve the win for his 1st save of the season. VIR 5, SBL 4 VIR up 1-0 in the series.

Game #2:

VIR C.Tillman vs. SBL E.Stults
This game is all C.Tillman as he dominates tossing a 3-hit shutout, fanning 8, and walking only 1. Both of the VIR runs are unearned as Joyce misplays a Bourn base hit in the 5th allowing a run to score; and in the 7th Rizzo reaches on a Jaso error and eventually scores on a Walker rbi-1b. The game also featured VIR pulling off a Triple Play on a Barmes line drive with runners on 1st and 2nd in the 6th inning. VIR 2, SBL 0 VIR up 2-0 in the series.

Game #3:

VIR C.Archer vs. SBL S.Diamond
VIR pulls out the whoopin sticks and belts out 14 hits in route to scoring 9 runs. Flaherty’s rbi-1b in the 4th starts the VIR scoring. VIR puts the game away in the 6th on a Flaherty solo-HR and a Segura 2-run 3b. Schierholtz adds a solo-HR and rbi-2b in the game for VIR. SBL only run comes on a Trumbo rbi-1b in the 6th. VIR 9, SBL 1 VIR up 3-0 in the series.

Game #4:

VIR J. de la Rosa vs. SBL J. Niese
SBL jumps out early in the 1st when Crisp bbs, Lowrie H&R 1b, Trumbo rbi-1b, Gomes rbi-1b, and a Morse rbi-1b. VIR gets 2 in the 3rd on a Segura rbi-1b and a Stanton rbi-FC. VIR takes the lead in the 4th on a Rizzo solo-HR followed by Gomes misplay of a Markakis fly ball into a 4-base error. VIR gets runs in the 5th on a Schierholtz rbi-2b and in the 7th on a Segura solo-HR. SBL Crisp closes out the scoring with a Sac fly in the 7th. Carpenter would eventually come on for VIR and close out the game. VIR 6, SBL 4 VIR up 4-0 in the series.

Game #5:

VIR J.Garcia vs. SBL D.Holland
SBL get on the board 1st in the 3rd on a Lowrie rbi-2b. In the SBL 5th Crisp hits a solo-HR (first of season for the Lynx) fora 2-0 SBL lead. Holland looks good through 5 then things fall apart in the 6th. Santana 2bs, Schierholtz 1bs, and Rizzo swats a 3-run HR. SBL ties the game in the 8th when Crisp 1bs and Lowrie H&R rbi-2b. But the VIR bullpen would be too much for the Lynx and Adams sac fly in the 11th is the difference. Carpenter notches his 3rd save. VIR 4, SBL 3 VIR up 5-0 in the series.

Game #6:

VIR M.Scherzer vs SBL E. Stults
SBL E.Stults is once again let down by the Lynx defense as Crisp misplays Santana’s fly ball allowing 2 runs to score in the 1st. Lowrie hits a solo-HR in the bottom half for SBL. SBL tie it in the 4th on a Trumbo solo-HR. The game is scoreless until the 8th when Segura hits a solo-HR to give VIR the lead. VIR Breslow and Carpenter close out the game for VIR. Carpenter picks up his 4th save. VIR 3, SBL 2 VIR up 6-0 in the series.

Game #7:

VIR C.Tillman vs. SBL S.Diamond
VIR looks poised for the sweep as Game 2 hero C.Tillman takes the mound. VIR gets on the board quickly in the 1st when Bourn bbs, stals 2nd, and scores on a Schierholtz rbi-1b. But the SBL take the lead in the 2nd when Trumbo reaches on a Adams error and Joyce hits a 2-run HR. VIR ties it in the 5th on a Bourn solo-HR. SBL retake the lead on a Lowrie 2-run 2b in the bottom half of the 5th. SBL Lowrie’s sac fly in the 7th and a Satin 2-run HR in the 8th put the game away for the Lynx to avoid the sweep. SBL 7, VIR 2 VIR takes the series 6-1.

Series Summary *

VIR stomps on the Lynx to open the season. VIR did not have any really dominate hitters as they just used a balanced offense to beat up on the Lynx. Carpenter is big with 4 saves and Scherzer wins both of his games. The bright spot for the Lynx was J.Lowrie who hit .370, drove in 6 runs, with 3 2bs and a HR.

Homer Bailey took his turn stymying the home hitters. He gave up just one run in 8+, while Zobrist supplied a solo HR. TIJ 5 – YSS 2

Game #3:

This one started out the same…Ogando threw 5+ scoreless for the visitors and TIJ held a 5-0 lead heading to the btm of the 7th. YSS showed some spunk with 3 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th to tie the game at 5 heading to the 9th. 3 runs in the top half made the single run in the bottom half totally useless. FYI: Choo had another HBP TIJ 8 – YSS 6

Game #4:

YSS’ Ivan Nova hurt for 32 days. Choo and Mauer homered to pace the visitors. TIJ 8 – YSS 3

Game #5:

Justin Upton homered and plated 4, while Michael Young homered and knocked in 3. Choo was HBP 2 more times. TIJ 14 – YSS 3

Game #6:

Choo’s 2 run HR in the 8th set the stage for Josmil Pinto to win it in the 9th. TIJ 3 – YSS 2.

Game #7:

Stop the presses. Mat Latos allowed just 1 unearned run and the “offense” made it stick….barely. The home team narrowly avoids the sweep. YSS 3 – TIJ 1

Series Summary *

It’s been said that pitching wins championships. I say that a lineup full of hitters will beat my pitching senseless.
Fun fact: Shin Soo Choo was HBP 6 times in the opening series.
