WEST COAST SWINGS DEAL WITH LONG BEACH

The Swing today acquired OF Juan Pierre and C Josh Bard in exchange for LHRP Brian Fuentes and C Michael Barrett. “Peter [Kilmarx] and I were discussing a deal for Pierre when I noted his need for a reliever,” said West Coast GM Mitch Watnik. “Next year, West Coast was on track to have 3 closers and the excess was obvious. On the other hand, Pierre is a full-time outfielder with speed who can be aligned with Shane Victorino and Michael Cuddyer. Eric Hinske and Randy Winn are the fourth and fifth outfielders. Josh Bard will split time with Yorvit Torrealba behind the dish. Pierre will be the main lead-off hitter going forward. At worst, this is a push for this year and a gain for next year. At best, we’ve just gotten a lead-off hitter and a catcher who saves us roster slots and puts us over the top this year.”
