Mesa  Solar Sox @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview: Two middle of the pack teams beginning to think about next year. Mesa coming in after a 3-3 series split, Virginia after a 4-2 series win. Can the Gents stay hot?
Game #1: VIR 9-6 W-Trevor Williams (9-9) L-Anibal Sanchez (3-6)

After two innings of nothing, Virginia opens the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd. Carlos Santana leads off with a walk and Whitt Merrifield follows with a single to left putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Jean Segura then lines a shot to left center scoring Santana but Merrifield is out trying to go to third. Anthony Rizzo follows Segura and settles into the box,…”A. RIZZO facing A. SANCHEZ, B 3rd, 2 Outs, Runner on 1st, Ahead 1-0…SEGURA well off first … SANCHEZ rocks and fires … and RIZZO puts a charge into it…deep to right center … if it’s deep enough … jackpot! … home run for RIZZO…and two runs score
SOLAR SOX 0, SLUGGERS 3″ Virginia’s lead didn’t last long. In the top of the 4th Jesus Aguilar laced a lead-off double down the rightfield line and after a strikeout Mitch Garver walked. Tim Anderson then sliced a double to right scoring Aguilar. Jake Marisnick brought in Garver with a sac fly to make it 3-2 Virginia and then Tyler Wade found the gap in left-center for an RBI double and a 3-3 tie. After trading runs in the 5th and 6th the game was still tied going into the 7th. Carlos Santana started the bottom of the 7th with a double off the wall in center. Cam “under the Mendoza line” Gallagher then did the improbable…”C. GALLAGHER facing A. SANCHEZ, B 7th, No Outs, Runner on 2nd, Tied 4-4…SANCHEZ with the offering … a blast to the opposite field … no doubt about this one…it’s long gone! … way over the fence in right … home run for GALLAGHER…and SANTANA scores ahead of him … GALLAGHER will touch them all…and he’s sure taking his time … he’s greeted at the plate
SOLAR SOX 4, SLUGGERS 6″ Whitt Merrifield then walks, steals second and goes to third on a ground out. He comes home on a WP for the 3rd run of the inning and a 7-4 Virginia lead. Mesa adds 2 more on a 2-run dinger from Tim Anderson in the top of the 8th, but Virginia counters with a Brian Anderson 2-run shot in the bottom of the 8th and holds on for the win.

Game #2: VIR 5-0 W-Luis Castillo (9-4) L-Clayton Richards (3-10)

This one was all Castillo as he went the distance throwing a 3-hit shut-out. Jean Segura went deep, George Springer and Brian Anderson had 2 RBI each and Anthony Rizzo was 4-4 with 2 runs scored.

Game #3: VIR 9-6 W-Chris Archer (8-5) L-Ian Kennedy (1-5) SV-Felipe Vazwuez (21)

Randal Grichuk gets Mesa on the board in the first with a blooper that falls in for a 2-run double. Virginia answers in the 2nd with a Nick Markakis RBI triple and a Carlos Santana SF. They go up 4-2 in the 4th on RBI singles by Brian Anderson and Cam Gallagher. Mesa makes it a 1 run game in the 5th, “E. ROSARIO facing C. ARCHER, T 5th, 1 Out, Bases Empty, Behind 2-4…Here’s the pitch … ROSARIO lofts a high fly … down the line to right…MARKAKIS looks as if he’s got it covered … on the warning track … now his back’s to the wall…the leap … and he comes down … empty handed! … ROSARIO eases into his home run trot…that ball just wouldn’t die
SOLAR SOX 3, SLUGGERS 4″ The Sluggers expand their lead in the bottom of the 5th on a solo shot from George Springer and a 2-run jack from Brian Anderson, 7-3 Virginia. But here comes Mesa,…Jesus Aguilar rips a 2-run homer in the 8th and Jake Marisnick doubles off the wall to drive in a run. Fortunately for Virginia, Felipe Vazquez comes in for a four out save and Jean Segura adds insurance with a 2-run double in the bottom of the 8th.

Game #4: VIR 3-2 W-Hansel Robles (1-3) L- Jeremy Jeffress (5-3)

A costly victory for Virginia as they lost starting pitcher Trevor Cahill for 35 days! The good news?…they beat Trevor Bauer (grade 18) and Jeffress (grade 23). Jesus Aguilar opened the game with a 2-run blast in the 1st and after Virginia scratched a run in the 2nd, Bauer settled in and it looked like it was over. But oh how things can change. Bottom of the 7th, Bauer strikes out George Springer and Nick Markakis to start the inning. Carlos Santana then dinks a Texas leaguer to right for a single. And then…” R. DEVERS facing T. BAUER, B 7th, 2 Outs, Runner on 1st, Behind 1-2…The pitch … DEVERS lashes one to right … base hit … that could be trouble … it’s rolling…MARISNICK gallops for it … he’s up with it … SANTANA’s around third…they’re waving him in…here comes the throw home…DEVERS’s going for third…SANTANA scores … tie game … AGUILAR cuts it to third … and DEVERS’s … out by a mile…oh, those, SOLAR SOX … they slay the go-ahead run … they trade the run for a big out.” The game stays like that until the 11th. Jackie Bradley leads off with a walk and steals 2nd. Whitt Merryfield draws the intentional walk and Gregorio Petit’s sac bunt moves them up 90 feet. Mesa elects to put Anthony Rizzo on and the sacks are now loaded. “G. SPRINGER facing J. JEFFRESS, B 11th, 1 Out, Bases Loaded, Tied 2-2…They’re playing him in … the runners take their lead … the pitch comes in … high … ball one…G. SPRINGER facing J. JEFFRESS, B 11th, 1 Out, Bases Loaded, Tied 2-2…The runners take their lead … he lets it go … smoked to right … base hit … it’s all over…BRADLEY scores
SOLAR SOX 2, SLUGGERS 3″

Game #5: VIR 5-2 W-Ryan Borucki (2-7) L-Anibal Sanchez (3-7) SV-Felipe Vazquez (22)

Borucki goes 8 innings scattering 6 hits and hands it over to Vazquez for the save as Virginia is one win away from a rare series sweep. George Springer’s 2-run monster shot in the first gives Borucki a lead he doen’t squander. Mesa does tie the game in the 2nd on back to back RBI doubles from Tim Anderson and Jake Marisnick,…but to no avail as Virginia puts up 2 more in the 2nd on a RBI double off the bat of Anthony Rizzo and a bases loaded walk from Nick Markakis. Borucki takes charge from there and keeps Mesa of the boards the rest of the game. Jean Segura adds a RBI double in the 6th to put Virginia up by the final score of 5-2. More bad news for Virginia (well not too bad) Clint Frazier lost for 25 days.

Game #6: VIR 7-1 W-Heath Fillmyer (4-4) L-Clayton Richard (3-11)

Another good game from a Virginia pitcher. Fillmyer limits the Solar Sox to 5 hits over 8 innings while striking out 10 batters. Tim Williams pitched a perfect 3 batter 9th and the Sluggers captured a rare series sweep. On the offensive side of the game, Anthony Rizzo ripped a 2-run homer and a 2-run double, Whitt Merrifield had 2 RBI’s on a double and 2 singles and Rafael Devrs hit his 10th homer of the year. For Mesa, Jesus Aguilar had 2 of his team’s 5 hits.

Series Summary: Virginia wins it 6-0 in a series sweep. No super outstanding performances but several very solid ones:
for Mesa Tim Anderson was 7-20 .350 AVG and 4 RBI
Jesus Aguilar 7-24 .291 AVG, 4 RBI and 2 HRfor Virginia Whitt Merrifield 9-23 .391 AVG, 7 runs, 7 SB

Anthony Rizzo 8-24 .333 AVG, 8 RBI and 2 HR
Nick Markakis 9-24 .375 AVG
George Springer 9-20 .450 AVG, 6 runs, 6 RBI and 2 HR

Columbus  Explorers @ Corktown  Cycle

Series Preview: Battle of (some) of the Cs – Columbus at Corktown (games played by Columbus)
Game #1: Lots of offense for Columbus as they come back from 2-1 1st inning deficit to win 12-2 – most everything happened in 9 run 6th inning. Best reliever for the Cycle was Kevin Plawecki who pitched the 9th, 3 batters, 1 k and no hits. Tyler Flowers cracked 2 homers (10, 11) for Columbus.
Game #2: 12 runs was enough offense for Columbus, so they scored 20 runs in this one. Game featured a 7 run, 6 run and 5 run outburst and 26 hits for Columbus. Final was 20-5 with 36 hits total in the game. Carlos Perez homered for Corktown (1). Corktown again goes to the bench for a 9th inning pitcher – this time Franmil Perez. He didn’t like it – 10 batters, 3 walks, 4 hits and 5 runs (and gave up a homer).
Game #3: Things settled down for the game 3 – Columbus only gets 14 hits and only scores 7 runs and only hit 1 homer – Brock Holt (6). But it was enough for a 7-1 win. Chris Taylor led the 7 hit attack for the Cycle with 2. Final 7-1 Columbus.
Game #4: We have a ballgame. Columbus scores 4 runs in the 3rd including a Brock Holt 2 run homer (7). However, the Cycle find ways to keep in the game as they tag J.A. Happ for 4 (FOUR) homers. Ok, they were all solo shots, but they add up. AND TWO OF THEM were by Corktown starter Anthony DeSclafani ((1,2). After 6, the score is 5-4 Columbus, but the Cycle plate 2 in the 7th to take the lead. However, the Explorers put together a 3 run 8th and hang on to win 8-6.
Game #5: Columbus gets 2 in the 1st, add a few more and hang on for 5-3 win as neither team gets double digit hits. Arms and shoulders must be getting tired or they found and old supply of baseballs.
Game #6: Columbus goes for the sweep, but Felix Pena (W 3-8) has other ideas. He goes 7 innings, gives up only 5 hits, fans 5 and gives up 1 run. AND he gets offensive help as the Cycle score 4 times in the 3rd. Pablo Reyes goes 3 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs, a homer (3) and rbi. Big blast was a Jorge Alfaro 3 run homer (2) in the 4 run inning. Final score 6-2 Corktown.
Series Summary: Columbus hit the road and took 5 from their hosts. Corktown will next host Pittsburgh, Columbus goes home to host Valdosta.

Pittsburgh  Lumber Company @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Preview: NL East leading Pittsburgh (66-48) takes on Triple Creek (54-60) in efforts to stay ahead of the Bandicoots.
Game #1: Taillon squares off against Tropeano and both pitches leave with a decision. Knotted after 7 full the bullpen battle was won by the Lumber Co. Jansen and Iglesias were too much for Soria and Triple Creek’s bats.

Dozier led for Pitt – 2-4 w/ solo shot but the Pitt pen allowed just 2 base runners over the last 3 frames. Corey Seager shined with a 3-4 day and Bellinger drove in two with a double and HR.

PLC 4 TCP 3

W – Pazos (4)
L – Soria (6)
S – Iglesias (20)

Game #2: Clevinger tossed a gem allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk over 8 1/3. Moustakas and Adames both went 2-4 and Judge, Moose, and Sisco each drove in a Lumber Co.

PLC 3 TCP 3

W – Clevinger (10)
L – Bieber (8)
S – Iglesias (21)

Game #3: Afteer 9 innings of not plating a run, Pittsburgh hurlers tack on 9 more. Yarbrough, Jansen, Hudson and Iglesias tag team for a 3 hit no walk shutout. Moose delivered the only run Pitt would need, a solo shot in the 2nd. Gausman went 8 full for the Creek allowing just 4 hits and 1 run himself but Triple Creek wiffle bats squandered his efforts.

PLC 1 TCP 0

W – Yarbrough (5)
L – Gausman (6)
S – Iglesias (22)

Game #4: Another hard fought battle but this one favors the home squad. Newcomb and Strahm pair up to help deliver Triple Creek their 1st, and only win, of the series. Dual threat Newcomb tallies a 2-3 1 RBI day to help his own cause. Manaea pitched a nice game going 6 full on 3 runs but the Creek arms ruled the day.

PLC 2 TCP 3

W – Newcomb (8)
L – Manaea (5)
S – Strahm (4)

Game #5: Pitt strikes early for a quick 4 run lead but Triple Creek fights back with 5 late to tie things up after 8 full. The Lumber Co bullpen decided another game as Jennings just didn’t have it in the 11th. Judge (3-5 2/ 2 RBI), Marte (2-5 w/ 2 RBI) and Soto’s pinch hit 2 run shot led Pitt’s offense. Bellinger’s 3-5 2 RBI and Seager’s 2-5 w/ 2 RBI efforts were wasted.

PLC 8 TCP 5

W – Iglesias (4)
L – Jennings (5)
S – Brebbia (2)

Game #6: The Lumber Co brought it early and often as they pillaged for a 6 run lead after 3 full. Triple Creek had nothing in the tank after several close games and Pitt wins this one easily. Adames (3-4), Moose (3-5 w/ 2 RBI), Sisco (3-4) and Dozier (2-5) paced Pitt.

PLC 8 TCP 2

W – Taillon (11)
L – Tropeano (4)
S – None

Series Summary: Pittsburgh took the series 5-1.
