Dallas  Cougars @ Southwest Detroit  Fighting Chihuahuas

Series Summary: Dallas takes series 4-3. Miguel Andujar batted .333 with 5 HR and 9 RBI for the series.

Yonge Street  Stalkers @ Chicago  Mobsters

Series Preview: Opening Series for the American League Champions who take on the Stalkers from north of the border. Chicago won’t repeat & the Stalkers are much stronger than last season. Two teams who will be just outside the playoff realm.
Game #1: After one inning of play it was 5 to 4. Not a good start by either club. Scooter Gennett was 3 for 5 with a Home Run & 4 RBI’s for Yonge Street. Neil Walker did the same for Chicago. In the end the Mobsters picked up a 3-run victory, but it was not a pretty game to say the least.

Final Score: Chicago 11 – Yonge Street 8

Win: Andrew Miller 1-0 (0.00)
Loss: Joe Kelly 0-1 (4.50)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #1

Game #2: Ivan Nova pitched 6 Inning of 7 Hit, 2 Run ball & picked up the win for Yonge Street.

Final Score: Yonge Street 4 – Chicago 2

Win: Ivan Nova 1-0 (3.00)
Loss: C.C. Sabathia 01 (3.86)
Save: Jose Alvarado #1

Game #3: Kris Bryant was 3 for 5 with 3 Doubles for the Stalkers. They cruised in this one. Gerritt Cole had a No-Hitter through 7 & 2/3 Innings, dominant with 11 K’s along the way.

Final Score: Yonge Street 5 – Chicago 1

Win: Gerritt Cole 1-0 (1.13)
Loss: Carlos Matias Martinez 0-1 (7.11)

Game #4: Robbie Erlin was the second coming of Tom Seaver. 7 Innings 4 Hits, 1 Walk, 1 Earned Run & 10 K’s. Aaron Hicks had 2 Hits & 3 RBI’s for the Stalkers as they again cruise to an easy win.

Final Score: Yonge Street 7 – Chicago 1

Win: Robbie Erlin 1-0 (1.29)
Loss: Felix Hernandez 0-1 (6.00)

Game #5: Chicago put a hurting on Domino German of the Stalkers. Marcus Stroman was masterful for the home town Mobsters, going 9 full Innings, allowing 3 Run, while fanning 11 Stalker batters. Alex Bregman & Joe Panik both had 3-Run Home Runs to help Chicago walk past the Stalkers.

Final Score: Chicago 11 – Yonge Street 8

Win: Marcus Stroman 1-0 (2.61)
Loss: Domingo German 0-1 (9.45)

Game #6: Dylan Covey was a ground ball machine, allowing only 2 Hits, Walking none & Striking out 1 lonely Mobster batters. It was all Stalkers, all the way in this one.

Final Score: Yonge Street 7 – Chicago

Win: Dylan Covey 1-0 (0.00)
Loss: Noah Syndergaard 0-1 (6.75)

Game #7: Chicago needed extra Innings & an error by Jorge Soler to allow a Double by Billy Hamilton to turn into a Little League Home Run & give the Mobsters the 1-Run victory.

Final Score: Chicago 4 – Yonge Street 3

Win: Ray Black 1-0 (2.25)
Loss: Hunter Strickland 0-1 (0.00)

Series Summary: Yonge Street takes the series 4 games to 3. Nothing exciting to report on these two middle of the pack franchises.

Pittsburgh  Lumber Company @ Bethesda  Bandicoots

Series Preview: Not sure what was in the latest APBA update but it made for a right bizarre season-opening series between Bethesda and Pittsburgh as they prepare to pass the division crown torch off to someone else this season and it could very well be the Lumberjerks.
Game #1: Clevinger on the mound for the Lumber Company and Jake Arrieta gets the nod as opening day starter for Bethesda.

Weirdness from the get-go or maybe it was opening-day jitters for Mike Clevinger that made him bounce a couple in the dirt with runners on 3rd base in the 1st inning that brought home Nick Martini and Anthony Rendon to score.

The Bandicoots added another couple of runs in the 4th (one on a solo homer by off-season pickup Matt Adams) and one in the 5th on a homer by Alen Hanson. Meanwhile all Arrieta did through five innings was pitch a perfect game.

The 6th inning was slightly less than perfect with Arrieta managing to get only two outs before allowing five runs on three hits and three walks in the inning. Arrieta handed the ball off to Yoshihisa Hirano with the bases loaded and Hirano promptly offered up a “thanks for sticking me the three runners on base, ya dick” grand slam to Starling Marte that gave the Lumber Fellas a 6-5 lead.

Fortunately the crazy ball throwing was not done yet … must have been the quick sand we mixed into the mound between innings … and in the 6th inning Anthony Rendon again scored on a wild pitch by Sergio Romo and the Bandicoots added another couple of runs on Trevor Story’s 1st homer of the season.

The Bandicoots added one more to close off the scoring in the 7th which was followed by a relatively calm and quiet 8th and 9th inning ending with Steve Cishek’s first save of the season as Bethesda topped Pittsburgh 9-6.

The two teams were uber efficient with scoring in the game with a grand total of six runners left on base – four by Pittsburgh and two by Bethesda.

Weird game.

Game #2: Francisco (Babe) Cervelli had three hits including his first homer of the season giving the Lumber Dudes all the offense they needed as Jameson Taillon was nearly unhittable in a 4-hit 4-0 shutout of the Bandicoots.

Not a good sign for Bethesda as they headed into the 2019 season with their worst starting pitching in probably six years and it was their offense that was supposed to make them competitive.

Pitt shortstop Jorge Polanco had a nice day as well with four hits in five at bats and one run scored. Taillon fanned six and didn’t walk a batter in the game not to mention that the four hits he allowed were all singles.

Not much worth mentioning on the Bethesda side save that after a crappy 1st and 2nd innings by Alex Cobb (he allowed 3 runs) he settled down nicely to complete five innings and was not terrible. Terrible is something that will follow Bethesda starters all season as they feature a rotation that includes three sub-Grade 5 starters in Cobb, Sonny Gray and Luis Cessa.

Game #3: Robinson Chirinos crushed Sergio Romo’s offering in the bottom of the 9th as the Bandicoots counted to runs to end 19 innings of being shutout, but it didn’t matter in the end as they fell short and the Lumber Conglomerate won again 4-2.

Aaron Judge took home star honors for Pittsburgh in this game going a cool 3/3 with a run, two RBIs and his team’s only extra base hit of the game – a double in the 1st inning that scored Mallex Smith and Jorge Polanco. The speedy but otherwise useless Smith scored twice in the game and had two singles and a stolen base.

Mike Moustakas drove in the other two runs for Pittsburgh with a single with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning. Michael Wacha did a great job on the mound for the Lumber Strokers tossing 8 shutout innings in which he allowed five hits, three walks and struck out six. Raisel Iglesias got Jonathan Schoop out to get his first save of the season.

Chirinos, David Peralta and Trevor Story each had two hits for Betehsda. Sonny Gray was ineffective starting the game for Bethesda allowing all four runs on seven hits and a walk in five

Game #4: Things were cruising along quite nicely for Tyson Ross as he followed Arrieta’s game one lead and was near perfect for five innings, but like Arrieta imploded in the 6th – capped by Francisco (Hercules) Cervelli’s grand slam – as the Lumber Pokers stormed from behind and scored six times and then held off the Bandicoots in a 6-5 win.

Kind of a bummer for Bethesda players and fans as outside of the 6th inning Pittsburgh managed all of two hits. Oh well. Sean Manaea (1-0) tossed six shaky innings to get the win and allowed four runs on sevens hits and a walk.

Cervelli’s homer was his 2nd of the series and the grand slam was his team’s 2nd of the series. He also had a single and a triple in the game and accounted for all of his team’s extra base hits.

Some terrible mouse-clicking by Bethesda’s bonehead manager in the bottom of the 9th killed a potential game tying rally. Jeff McNeil opened the 9th off closer Raisel Iglesias with a triple and then Iglesias further crapped himself by walked another pinch hitter (AJ Ellis) but managed to strike out Lorenzo Cain. Anthony Rendon followed with a pretty deep flyball that easily scored McNeil, but the Bethesda field boss crapped the bed and clicked on the advance to 2nd base on a fly ball option and Ellis was easily gunned down as he stumbled into 2nd base.

Another weird game in that there was a whole lotta nothing going on for Pittsburgh in the game other than in the 6th while a bunch was happening for Bethesda with Brad Miller (1) and Rendon (1) homering and the team scoring three runs on sacrifice flies – including two by Rendon who was 3/3 on the day. David Peralta got the other SAC Fly.

Game #5: The Lumber Puppies had only eight hits in this game, but half of them were homers as they were led by Thug Captain Francisco Cervelli who had two and Cole Hamels who tossed a four-hitter in an easy 5-1 win for Pittsburgh.

That gives Cervelli four homers in five days and called up some memories of Tuffy Rhodes eons ago who I believe hit three homers in his first game of the year for the Cubs, but I digress…

Anyway only five games in and I’d say that this clown already deserves player of the week consideration since he was hitting .429 with 8 RBIs.

Luis Cessa was the victim of all four tater bops with Aaron Judge (1) and Brian Dozier (1) also going deep. Judge also ground into two double plays. Other than the monstrous hits he gave up Cessa did not pitch half bad and allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Hamels was not at all bad … he walked one and fanned 10. Nice way to start the year.

David Peralta (1) homered for Betehda in the 1st inning to make it look like it was going to be close, but with Hamels otherwise pretty much unhittable he just wound up being the dickhead that screwed up the shutout.

Game #6: Mike Clevinger’s second kick at the can landed squarely in the groin of the Bandicoots as the Lumbering Ninnies’s starter easily handled the home team hitters for his team’s 5th straight win 3-1.

Clevinger got help from Bethesda fielders Trevor Story and Almedys Diaz and they both botched routine plays in the 8th inning that led to two unearned runs being scored that broke the 1-1 tie and led to the win.

Clevinger fanned eight and walked two and allowed just three hits in 7 innings to earn the win. Jake Arrieta started for Bethesda and earned a no-decision despite pitching well and allowing just one run in 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts and two heads on his mantle (Cervelli and Dozier).

Juan Soto (1) smacked the only earned run of the game for Pittsburgh with a long fly ball to dead centre in the 5th while Matt Adams answered in kind for Bethesda with his 2nd of the season in the 2nd inning.

Mallex Smith continued to do his best impression of an Irish setter and mindlessly run and run and run … stealing his 3rd base of the season. Chris Owings provided some unexpected offense with half of the Bandicoots’ four hits – two doubles!

Raisel Iglesias tossed a 3-up, 3-down 9th to earn his 3rd save of the series.

Game #7: Another managing blunder by Bethesda nearly cost the home team a game as they watched in awe as Alex Cobb pitched like Christy Mathewson for 8 innings of shutout ball and then watched in awe as he pitched like John Van Benschoten for 1/3 of an inning.

Up 3-0 heading into the 9th Cobb was maxxed out in Grade and looked like a strong candidate to add to the wackiness of this opening series by tossing a complete game, no-hit shutout through 8 innings as a Grade 3 starter. Cobb so mesmerized the Bethesda field boss that after he fanned Josh Bell, the manager watched him give up a walk to Cervelli, a hit to Polanco, and another to Juan Soto to load the bases before even having someone up in the bullpen. Aaron Judge up with the bases loaded spelled the end of Cobb finally and Brandon Morrow was inserted in his place in a hopes that he would repeat his appearance from a few games back where he was able to get two outs with the bases loaded without a runner crossing the plate. Unfortunately it was not to be as Judge ripped a ball to 3rd baseman Alen Hanson who threw home to try and nail Cervelli but the catcher scored easily as Hanson’s throw sailed wide of the plate and nearly over the head of AJ Ellis to make it 3-1 for Bethesda. Starling Marte then came in and singled home Polanco and then Mike Moustakas brought home Mallex Smith who was pinch running for Judge. That tied it at 3-3 and sent it into extra innings.

Fortunately for Bethesda, shoddy fielding was not a monopoly and Alen Hanson was able to advance to 3rd base on a single to centre field when Philip Ervin let the ball skip past him. Hanson scored on a two-out “what the heck, he’s hot” gamble to let Chris Owings hit that paid off as he lined the ball over shortstop and into left field to end it with Betheda on top 4-3.

Series Summary: It’s a book-end series for Bethesda with wins at both ends and lotsa crud in between as Pittsburgh starts off the year right taking 5 of 7 against the Bandicoots. It may be a long year in Bethesda and for the first time in years we may be sellers …

Portland rides a strong performance by Walker Buehler to get the 3-1 win.
POR 3 TCP 1
Game #2: Alex Wood 9 YZ (TCP) vs Kyle Freeland 15 Y (POR)
Another strong pitching performance for Portland as Freeland and 3 others combine for the shutout.
POR 6 TCP 0
Game #3: Kevin Gausman 8 Z (TCP) vs Jack Flaherty 14 XY (POR)
Michael Conforto blast 2-run HR in the 3rd , then follows it up with a solo HR in 5th. Portland once again gets a nice pitching performance with Flaherty.
Game #4: Bieber (TCP) vs Ross Stripling (POR)
A 3-run HR by Benintendi for Triple Creek 8th inning, gave the Patriots their first win on the year. Bellinger slugged two HRs of his own in the game.
TCP 6 POR 3
Game #5: Nick Tropeano 7 (TCP vs) German Marquez 10 XYZ (POR)
The Patriots take the lead in the top of the 9th after a two-out error by Freddie Galvis, but the vet Carlos Gomez hits a two-out solo HR to tie it up in the bottom of the inning. In the 10th inning, TJ McFarland gets the game winning RBI (and the W), with a two-out single due to a depleted Portland bullpen.
POR 6 TCP 5
Game #6: Shawn Newcomb 11 YW (TCP) vs Walker Buehler 17 XYZ (POR)
Back to back HRs by Martinez and Austin in the 3rd put Portland up, but the Patriots would battle back to send it into extras. This time it is Triple Creek that get it done in extra’s. Walker Buehler? Buehler? Buehler? Goes down with a 10-game injury.
TCP 4 POR 3
Game #7: Alex Wood 9 YZ (TCP) vs Kyle Freeland 15 Y (POR)
Freeland takes as perfect game into the 7th inning before back to back walks. He gets out of the inning without allowing a hit or run due to a key DP.
Freeland enters the 9th inning still on a no-hitter and Portland leading 2-0. Caleb Joseph grounds out. Pinch hitter Devin Mesoraco strikes out. The dangerous Andrew Benintendi steps to the plate with Portland fans all standing. Pitching on the corner, he swings, but he held up, no, he went too far. Andrew is down on strikes and that’s it. (Apparently a no-hitter isn’t worth mentioning with light commentary)
POR 2 TCP 0 Kyle Freeland NO HITTER
Series Summary: Portland opens the season on the right foot at home, winning 5 of 7. Freeland was masterful with two wins, a no-hitter, and no earned runs (just 3 hits in 15 innings). Jose Martinez slugged 3 HRs for Portland, and Andrew Benintendi and Cody Bellinger each slugged two for Triple Creek.
Portland heads on the road @ Harsens Island, while the Patriots head to Valdosta.

Sacramento  Capitals @ Rosemere  Renegades

Series Preview: Rosemere opens at home what should be another very long season against Sacramento.
Series Summary: Rosemere barely avoids a 7 games sweep by winning the 7th thanks to a PH 3 runs homer by C Pinder in B7.

Corktown  Cycle @ Jersey  Nor’easters

Series Preview: Opening day in snowy New Jersey for the Nor’Easters.
Game #1: Jersey wins the opener 6-0 behind a 2-hit complete game shutout by Matt Boyd. Jersey scores 4 runs in the 1st inning with homers by Odor and Calhoun and never look back.
Game #2: It took 10 innings for Corktown to win the game 4-2. D.J. Lemahieu wins it with a 2-run single. Grade 25 Treinen gets the win in relief. Cole Calhoun had a 2-run homer for Jersey accounting for their only runs.
Game #3: The Nor’Easters pounded 5 homes, 2 by Pham and Domingo Santana, Odor, and Guzman belting the other three in a 9-3 win for Jersey. Derek Rodriguez 5 innings of 1-hit ball for the win.
Game #4: It’s a 5-2 win for Jersey behind 7 solid innings from Dan Straily who allowed only 2 runs. Guzman and Santana homer again for the Nor’Easters.
Game #5: Corktown’s Anthony DeSclafani was too much for the Nor’Easters as pitched 8 innings allowing only one run in a 3-1 Corktown win. Chris Taylor again was the hero for Corktown with a 2-run double for the margin of victory. Odor homered for Jersey’s only run.
Game #6: Corktown’s Anthony DeSclafani was too much for the Nor’Easters as pitched 8 innings allowing only one run in a 3-1 Corktown win. Chris Taylor again was the hero for Corktown with a 2-run double for the margin of victory. Odor homered for Jersey’s only run.
Game #7: Another close one, this one going 11 innings with the Nor’Easters winning 5-4 on a sac fly from the bat of Odor. Jersey had to come from behind twice with key hit a 2-run double from Cole Calhoun that tied the game 4-4 in the 7th. Craig Stammen the 4th reliever used by the Nor’Easters picks up the win. That man again for Corktown, Chris Taylor and another homer and 3 RBI’s in a losing effort.
Series Summary: Jersey’s off to a good start winning the series 5-2 in hopes of a second consecutive post season appearance.

Mesa  Solar Sox @ Coconut Creek  Crushers

Series Preview: MSS comes in as heavy favorites.
Game #1: A couple solo HR’s kept CCC in the game until the 7th. MSS offense then pulled away in an 8-2 win.
Game #2: Bad defense lets down Snell. Both bullpens allow runs and the game goes extra innings.
MSS pushes across a run int he 10th to win 4-3.
Game #3: 3 errors in the 1st inning and CCC is down 7 runs. MSS goes on to win 11-8.
Mookie hits 2 HR’s with 6 RBI in the loss.

Game #6: MSS apparently was VERY pissed about the last loss. They massacre us 18-0.
Rosario hits 3 HR’s with 7 RBI in the rout.
Game #7: Snell only allows 3 hits in 7 IP. But, two of them were big HRs that cost him.
Heaney is strong and beats his former team 8-3.
Series Summary: MSS wins the series 6-1.

Fremont  Cannons @ Motor City  Muscle

Series Preview: Fremont helps Motor City open the season with a 7-game series
Game #1: MCM 4 – FRE 3

WP: DeGrom
LP: Romano (CG)
SV: W. Davis

HR: FRE–Kepler; MCM Freese (2)

A pair of HRs by David Freese supplied all the MCM runs, and they needed all of them as FRE was rallying on the 9th, but Wade Davis closed it out.

Game #2: MCM 4 – FRE 0

WP: Verlander
LP: D. Norris (CG)

HR: none

Justin Verlander was outstanding, but Daniel Norris wasn’t bad, either. Norris struck out 15in eight innings, while Verlander only gave up two hits. Avisail Garcia had a two-RBI triple for MCM.

Game #3: MCM 5 – FRE 4

WP: Nuno
LP: J. Vargas

HR: FRE–Kepler, Moncada; MCM–Trout (2)

Trout’s two HRs and four RBI saved the day for MCM. He tied the game in the 7th with a three-run shot after the Cannons had put up their own three spot in the top of the inning. The game ended on a strike ’em out-throw ’em out double play

Game #4: FRE 11 – MCM 8

WP: Venters
LP: Liberatore
SV: Doolittle

HR: FRE–K. Davis, Kepler; MCM–Trout

Pitcher’s nightmare game as there were six multi-run half-innings. MCM came back to tie the game with a four-run 3rd inning after FRE had a six-run 2nd inning. FRE finished it off with a three-run 8th inning. The difference was a bases-loaded double by Javy Baez

Game #5: FRE 4 – MCM 1

WP: Bundy (CG)
LP: Davies (CG)

HR: FRE–K. Davis; MCM–Alonso

Pitcher’s duel is quite a contrast from the previous game.

Game #6: FRE 7 – MCM 1

WP: Allard (CG)
LP: Leake

HR: Ohtani

Another six-run for FRE put this one away early as Kolby Allard dominated, striking out 13.

Game #7: FRE 4 – MCM 1

WP: Romano (CG)
LP: DeGrom (CG)

HR: FRE–Kepler, K. Davis, T. Shaw

Realism takes another day off as another low-graded pitcher dominates with another complete-game performance for FRE. Max Kepler hit his 4th HR of the series.

Series Summary: Fremont takes the series 4 games to 3 by getting up off the mat after losing the first 3 games

There were 7 complete games in the series; 4 of them were by the losing pitcher

For FRE, Max Kepler had 4 HRs in the series, Khris Davis had 3; For MCM, Mike Trout had 3 HRs and David Freese had 2

In addition to Kepler’s 4 HRs, he went 9-26 (.346), with 5 RBI, 7 runs scored, and 2 doubles; Khris Davis and Travis Shaw also had excellent series for FRE

Sam Romano went 1-1 with two CGs, and 9 Ks in 17 innings for FRE

Selkirk  Steelers @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview: Opening Day and Week for MWBL and Selkirk comes to visit Columbus. Explorers were the winningest team in MWBL (regular season) last year – and hope to get close to there again, but it will be tough. Selkirk was at the bottom of the NL Central last year and are rebuilding and hope to fair better.

Columbus was pretty quiet in the offseason but did manage to pick up a few pieces via trades notably Julio Teheran and Asdrubel Cabrera – and management is looking at them for key contributions. Some interesting draft pickups will combine with some hot prospects and Columbus fans are once again excited. Sights = stay close enough for wild card as the Evil Empire – Tempe looks to be a hard lock for the division IF NOT THE WHOLE LEAGUE…..

Game #1: J.A. Happ starts off strong fanning the side in the 1st on his way to a 10k performance in 6 innings. 4 hits, 2 runs including a solo homer (1) to rookie Gleyber Torres of Selkirk. But James Shields (L 0-1) did not fare well – he gives up 5 runs in the opening inning. But it was a weird 5 runs. Gordon leads off and singles, steals 2nd. Moves to 3rd on grounder. Nailed at the plated on a grounder – 2 outs, Blackmon at 2nd. Shin-Soo Choo walks. Enrique Hernandez then flies one way over the wall for a 3 run homer (1). Asdrubel Cabrera then singles in his 1st Columus at bat and Paul DeJong follows with a 2 run homer (1) of his own. And just like that, after 2 outs and not much brewing, it’s suddenly 5-0. Not too much excitement after that and it ends up 6-2 Columbus, Happ the winner (1-0).
Game #2: Spencer Turnbull (L 0-1) vs. new comer Julio Teheran (W 1-0) and again an Explorer pitcher posts double digit Ks – 11 ks by Teheran in 5.2 innings and only 3 hits – BUT he did give up 7 walks!!! However, when his dust settled he only gave up 1 run, so it worked out just fine. Columbus is held in check until the 3rd, but then they tally 3 runs and 2 more in the 4th enroute to an 8-1 win. Tyler Flowers homers (1), Dee Gordon and Brock Holt triple and 3 Explorers, including rookie Spencer Kieboom (BOOM) get 2 rbis each.
Game #3: Matt Shoemaker becomes the 3rd straight Explorers starter to notch double digits Ks as he fans 10 Steelers in 6 innings. However, he gives up 8 hits and 4 runs and Selkirk makes a game of it. In fact, starter Kyle Gibson (W 1-0) pitches very well going 7.2 innings, 6 hits and 2 runs – which included a solo homer by Tyler Flowers (2). Gibson got support from Nick Williams and his 2 run homer (1) in the 4th. Gleyber Torres hits a solo homer (2) in the 1st and Jesse Winker goes 3 for 3 with a rbi and scoring a run. The final was 5-2 Selkirk and Max Fried, working the bullpen, gets the save (1).
Game #4: That was the high water mark for Selkirk. Game 4 becomes a blowout for Columbus and despite only getting 7 hits, they score 9 runs (6 walks helped) as did a 3 run Paul DeJong homer (2). Wade LeBlanc (W 1-0) also did well on the mound for 6 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 0 walks and NO he did not get double digit Ks – only 4, but his bullpen help almost ran it to 10 getting 5 in the final 3 innings. Steven Matz (0-1) took the loss.
Game #5: Game 5 was a rarity for Columbus – starter tossing a complete game. Draft day pickup Glenn Sparkman (W 1-0) goes 9, 8 hits, 2 runs and 7 Ks. Happy management. Supporting him was Enrique Hernandez, 2 for 3, walk, run, 4 ribs and a homer (2). New guy on the block, Asdrubel Cabrera also homers (1), Charlie Blackmon starts swinging and get 3 hits and scores twice. Gleyber Torres keeps hitting and gets 2 hits (including a double) for Selkirk and is batting .412 through the 1st 5 games! He and Nick Williams (.455) and Jesse Winker (.400) are the offense so far for Selkirk. Andrew Cashner (L 0-1) got hammered through 4.2 innings and the final was 9-2 Columbus.
Game #6: James Shields and J.A. Happ square off again and Happ again fans 10, this time in 7 innings and this time he gives up 1 run on 4 hits and gets another win (2-0). Asdrubel Cabrera has a fun game. Twice Enrique Hernandez walks in front of him, and twice he homers (2,3) and knocks in 4 runs. Dee Gordon has a 2 hit game, double and homer (1). And Columbus parlays all that stuff into a 6-1 victory. Gleyber Torres gets 1 hit and drives in the lone Selkirk run. Shields (L 0-2) lasted 6 innings, 5 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks and 7 ks.
Game #7: And the best performance of the series was reserved for game 7. Julio Teheran flirted big-time for the no-no, but 1 out single in the 8th by Nick Williams broke up the no-hitter. But boy was Julio on the money. 1 hit, 1 walk (he had 7 in game 2) and 13 ks and no runs. Not a bad day and he is now 2-0 for Columbus. And he got a 9 hit attack which included a solo homer by HIMSELF (1)!. Charlie Blackmon hit his 1st of the year on a 3 hits, 2 rbi day. Spencer Turnbull (L 0-2) went 5, 6 hits, 4 runs (2 earned) in picking up the supportless loss.
Series Summary: Columbus took advantage (6 wins in 7 games) of a Selkirk team still in rebuild mode, but they have some promising players. Columbus enjoyed the play of Teheran – 2 wins, near no-hitter, homer; and Asdrubel Cabrera (3 homers and 5 rbis in 6 games) and hope to keep putting up lots of runs to support their good, but not great pitching staff.

D.Castillo comes on for HOL in the B9 and gives up a solo-HR to Escobar before he closes it out for his 2nd save.
HOL 2, SBL 1
Game #7: Game 7
HOL jumps out in the T1 on a Goldschmidt 2-run HR and a C.Gonzalez rbi-2b.  Escobar hits a solo-HR in the B4 for a SBL run. SBL takes the lead in the B5 with 3 runs, one on a dropped throw by Iannetta and a 2-run 2b By Lowrie. In the SBL B6 Cozart’s sac fly makes it 5-3. Its looking good for the SBL when Escobar hits a 2-run HR in the B7 (2nd of game and 8th of the series!) for a 7-3 SBL lead. But HOL is not done yet as they get a run in the T8 on a Goldschmidt solo-HR (2nd of game). In the HOL T9 Cuevas 3bs, after Osuna comes on to fan Yelich for the 2nd out, it looks good for SBL. But Marte coaxes a walk to bring up Goldschmidt. SBL elects to throw to him and its a BIG mostake as he swats his 3rd HR of the game, a 3-run game tying HR. The lone consulation is that the game is only tied. Moronta comes on to get the last out in the T9. HOL R.Rodriguez opens the B9 giving up a 1b to Muncy who moves to 2nd on Cuevas error, Escobar is IW, and D.Castillo is called into the game by HOL. Castillo fans Cave, but walks PH Meadows, Canha then draws a bases loaded game winning walk for the SBL.
SBL 8, HOL 7
Series Summary: SBL opens the season with a 5-2 series win over a real good HOL team. Maybe things are looking up, tho SBL probably won’t get too many series like the one they got from Escobar. The series was dominated by HOL Goldschmidt (.448/.529/.966 6 runs, 13 hits,
13 rbi, 3-2b, 4-HR, 5 bbs) and SBL Escobar (.379/.419/1.241 9 runs, 11 hits,
