Pittsburgh  Lumber Company @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview:  Pittsburgh and Columbus – did the Lumber Company fly or ride the bus (or carpool). 6 game set in store. Here come da Judge, but he’s up against a gang of home run happy Explorers.
Game #1:  Game 1 featured 4 Columbus homers, but it still goes into free baseball territory. Michael Wacha goes 6 innings and does well – 2 hits, 3 runs (2 earned). He is relieved at the start of the 7th up 4-3. Stays that way until the 8th when Pittsburgh adds the insurance run. But bottom of the 8th Matt Carpenter unloads for a 2 out, 2 run, game tying homer (8). Bullpens keep it scoreless until the bottom of the 11th when Paul DeJong his a 2 out, 2 run walk-off homer (6 – and his second of the game). Curtis Granderson (2) was the other dinger ringer. FINAL 7-5 COL WP Chris Rusin (3-3) LP Jake McGee (0-2)
Game #2:  Now this one was odd – and again FREE BASEBALL. Top of the 2nd, Aaron Judge Walks, Brian Dozier walks. Matt Shoemaker then balks them to 2nd and 3rd. Tyler Flowers then picks off Judge at 3rd. With Joey Gallo still up, Shoemaker again BALKS – twice now. Gallow then hits a foul fly to Ian Desmond and Dozier tags and scores, 1-0 Pittsburgh with no hits. Columbus no hits either. Stays that way except for a lead-off single in the 4th for Jonathan LuCroy. Shoemaker gives up 1 more hit, another single through 8 innings. But Chad Kuhl gives up only 1 hit in 7.1 innings and John Brebbia gives up none in the 8th. So it’s 1-0 Pittsburg going to the bottom of the 9th, Robby Scott on the mound, 2 outs, Tyler Flowers up and he connects (1) to tie it up!
FREE BASEBALL and it’s not the top of the 11th. Nick Delmonico draws a one out walk off Darren O’Day. Lane Adams comes in to PR and steals 2nd and 3rd and scores on a Sterling Marte groundout, 2-1 Lumber Company. Bottom of the 11th, Jake McGee on the hill. Dee Gordon gets a 1 out double. Tyler Flowers is then drilled in the head and up steps Charlie Blackmon and he belts a walk-off 3 run homer (6) and COLUMBUS wins 4-2 in 11. 8 hits total in the game. WP O’Day (1-3), LP McGee (0-3) BS (2)
Game #3:  No free baseball, just 3 innings where a team scored 3 runs. 1st inning Ryan Zimmerman smashes a 3 run homer (9). 3rd inning, Pittsburgh returns the 3 run favor which included a 2 run Josh Bell triple. Explorers complete the 3 run trifecta in the 6th which also included a 2 run triple, from Shin-Soo Choo. Final COLUMBUS 6 Pittsburgh 3. WP J.A. Happ (2-3) S Tony Watson (1) LP Jake Odorizzi (0-2)
Game #4:  Then the was a 1 day break and the Explorers come back and rip 12 hits and score 8 runs and LOSE by 10. Final PITTSBURGH 18 Columbus 8. Lumber Company gets 5 in the 1st, 7 in the 3rd, 2 more in the 4th before Columbus does anything. By then it didn’t much matter as regulars from both teams took the rest of the day off. But here are some highlights:
Lane Adams – 2 homers (1,2) and 3 rbis (he was an in-game sub). Mike Moustakas 2 hits, homer (6), 2 rbis. Aaron Judge, double and homer (4), 2 rbis; Joey Gallo, 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 rbis, homer (6). Jorge Polanco 3 hits, 4 rbis, homer (5). Whew and there was more. Jesus Sucre (4) and Curtis Granderson (3) homered in the losing cause.
WP Yu Darvish (4-1) LP Jordan Lyles (2-2)
Game #5:  The Explorers didn’t like the game 4 thrashing so they came back and scored 8 more in the game 5 but only gave up 3 runs including a Brian Dozier homer (9). Explorers used 3 more long balls: Ryan Zimmerman, 2 run shot (10), Paul DeJong a 3 run shot (7) and Charlie Blackmon (7) solo shot. Final, COLUMBUS 8 Pittsburgh 3. WP Josh Tomlin (6-1) LP Cole Hamels (0-3)
Game #6:  This one had ejections left and right. Ervin Santana started the trouble beaning Sterling Marte and Joey Gallo. Then Michael Wacha retaliates and get’s tossed in the 3rd. But Santana wasn’t through, he beans Marte again and he’s tossed! Wacha wasn’t overly upset though, he gave up 4 hits and 4 runs in his 2 innings including a homer. Robby Scott takes over and he gives up 2 more runs (on 1 hit and a walk). And John Brebbia pitches 2 more and gives up 1 hit, 1 run, 1 homer. Adding it all up, the Explorers get 7 runs. Santana wasn’t too effective in his 3 innings either. He gives up 4 hits, 3 walks, 4 runs and 2 homers. But his bullpen gives up 2 hits and no runs in their 6 innings. And the final is COLUMBUS 7, Pittsburgh 4.
Lumber Company homer – Aaron Judge (5) and a 3 run blast from Mike Moustakas (7). Columbus homers come from Russell Martin (1) and Eduardo Nunez (4).
WP Luis Avilan (1-0) S David Robertson (8) LP Scott (0-1)
Series Summary:  In the end, the Explorers take 5 of 6 and continue to hit the long ball. Both teams at home next week, Pittsburgh host Harsens Island. Columbus will take kind care of Corktown.

Series Preview:  Tijuana hosts The Crushers for 6
Series Summary:  The Bottle Rockets take 5 of 6 from The Crushers. 3 wins in walk-off fashion!!

Chicago  Mobsters @ Virginia  Sluggers

Series Preview:  At 23-10, Chicago sits atop the A.L. Central and brings its vaunted bullpen to Virginia, a team just hanging around to give other teams a problem every now and then.
Game #1:  CHI 4 – 13 -1 W-Felix Hernandez (2-0)
VIR 3 – 7 – 1 L- Chris Archer (3-3)
CHI strikes first with single runs in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd innings to jump out to a 3-3 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, Hernandez got into trouble when he gave up back-to-back singles that came right before Jackie Bradley crushed one over the rightfield wall and tied the game at 3 all. J.D. Martinez erased the tie with a 6th inning blast that gave CHI a 4-3 lead and that vaunted bullpen of Chicago simply shut down any attempt by Virginia to get back in the game.
Game #2:  CHI 2 – 10 – 0 W-Julio Teheran (2-1)
VIR 0 – 4 – 1 L- Trevor Cahill (1-4)
Julio Teheran was on his game. Throwing a CG 4-hit shutout, he held VIR in check throughout the game. Teheran didn’t need much run support and that is exactly what he got. The bottom of the order was the catalyst for CHI. Andrelton Simmons was 1-2 with a walk and Billy Hamilton was 3-3. They both scored in the 3rd inning on RBI singles by Dustin Fowler and Freddie Freeman. From there on out it was all Teheran as he coasted to the win.
Game #3:  CHI 2 – 10 – 1 L- CC Sabathia (2-3)
VIR 4 – 6 – 1 W- Luis Perdomo (3-0) Sv- Felipe Rivero (7)
A surprise win for Virginia as Luis Perdomo scattered 10 hits that normally would have produced a few runs for the Mobsters. However, Chicago was not able to capitalize on its opportunities to score and Virginia was. CC Sabathia’s downfall was the 3rd inning. A costly error by Billy Hamilton along with RBI singles by Carlos Santana and Neil Walker gave VIR a 4-0 lead that they were able to hand over to closer Felipe Rivero,…who did his job with a 4 out save.
INJURY NOTE: CHI- Justin Turner 7-days
Game #4:  VIR 7 – 9 – 0 w- Tim Adleman (3-2) SV- Felipe Rivero (8)
CHI 5 – 5 – 1 L- Jose Quintana (4-2)
A day off must have done Virginia a lot of good. They jumped on Chicago starter Jose Quintana for 6 hits and 7 runs in 1.3 innings. The Mobster bullpen came in early and finished with 6.3 innings allowing only 3 hits while striking out 8. By then it was too late. Anthony Rizzo’s two doubles and two RBI’s along with Carlos Santana’s 3-run homer had staked VIR to a 7-0 lead. Luis Perdomo along with relievers Cory Gearrin and Flipe Rivero pitched well and held off a Mobster come back led by Dustin Fowler’s 3-run long ball and Jose Martinez’ solo blast. Some how, and surprisingly, Virginia ties the series at 2 apiece.
Game #5:  CHI 7 – 13 – 0 W-Noah Syndergaard (3-0)
VIR 2 – 5 – 2 L- Chris Tillman (1-3)
Virginia comes out quickly on Whit Merrifield’s solo shot in the 1st. But that would not hold off a 13 hit attack by Chicago. Andrew McCutchen ripped at a 3 for 5 clip and drove in 3 runs with 2 singles and a triple. He was helped by Billy Hamilton’s 2-run single and a long solo homer by Jose Martinez. CHI got 5 in the 4th and added single runs in the 6th and 9th. Not to be overshadowed, three relievers tossed 4 innings of 1-hit ball and nailed down the win for Syndergaard.
Game #6:  CHI 6 – 10 – 0 L- Aroldis Chapman (0-1)
VIR 7 – 13 – 1 W- Jorge de la Rosa (1-0)
A good showing from both teams as they both mounted late inning come-backs. Jose Martinez got it going for Chicago as he hit one “way high … way deep … way out of here!” and gave CHI a 1-0 lead. But, VIR answered in the 2nd inningwhen Carlos Santana stepped to the plate “deep to right … it could be… wave good-bye … it’s gone! … home run for Carlos SANTANA. Carlos ties the game.” Doubles by Jorge Bonifacio and Ryan Flaherty accounted for another run and Jason Castro slapped an RBI single to give VIR a 3-1 lead. In the top of the 3rd, the Mobsters’ Dustin Fowler triples into the corner and scores on a Daniel Nava RBI single. Score now 3-2 VIR. The scoring settled dow for a couple of innings and then, in the bottom of the 6th, Jackie Bradley Jr. steps to the plate,… “GOODY’s back on the rubber … the pitch … BRADLEY belts it deep…McCUTCHEN has his back to the wall … looking up … and it’s bye-bye baseball…good for two runs … Jackie trots around the bases.” Virginia takes a 5-2 lead and it goes to the 8th inning. The wheels fell of for VIR and CHI made its charge. Daniel Nava leads off for Chicago and doubles for his 3rd hit of the game. After an out, Freddie Freeman is hit by a pitch and Chris Archer is relieved by Cory Gearrin. Gearrin promptly walks Andrew McCutchen to load the bases and faces Alex Bregman. “A. BREGMAN facing C. GEARRIN, T 8th, 1 Out, Bases Loaded, Behind 2-5…Infielders back … the runners take their lead … the pitch … swung on…it’s smashed deep to left center … BRADLEY is racing over … NAVA scores”’FREEMAN is right behind him … McCUTCHEN rounds thirdTRY TO SCORE?…the throw comes in to SANTANA … BREGMAN’s in standing with a double and they’re holding McCUTCHEN at third … the tying run is now at third base.” It didn’t stay there long as Buster Posey rips a double to the gap scoring both runners and giving Chicago a 6-5 lead. With Aroldis Chapman now pitching for Chicago the unthinkable happens. Ryan Flaherty gets a seeing eye single and Jason Castro draws a walk to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Up steps Nick Markakis…”N. MARKAKIS facing A. CHAPMAN, B 9th, No Outs, 1st and 2nd, Behind 5-6
…And the pitch comes in … it’s a shot to left center … base hit … FOWLER is racing over he cuts it off deep in the gap … FLAHERTY is around third … CASTRO is around second…they’re waving FLAHERTY in…CASTRO’s headed for third…the throw home
…here’s the play at the plate … and he’s … in standing … tie ballgame! and CASTRO moves to third … MARKAKIS is on with a single.” Lewis Brinson pinch runs for Castro at third and Chicago brings in Andrew Miller to put out the fire.
“G. SPRINGER facing A. MILLER, B 9th, No Outs, 1st and 3rd, Tied 6-6…Infielders in … BRINSON into a little shuffle at third … the pitch from MILLER…hit deep to center field … HAMILTON doesn’t even bother … it’s all over! … BRINSON scores
MOBSTERS 6, SLUGGERS 7″ And Virginia gets an unexpected 3-3 split for the series.
Series Summary:  Virginia wins 3 against a powerful, pitching strong Chicago team that normally would sweep the Sluggers. For CHI, JD Martinez was 8-22 .363 with 4 homers and 4 RBI. For VIR, Jackie Bradley (in 2 games) was 4-8 .500 with 2 homers and 5 RBI.
Coming up next, Chicago goes back home to face Mesa and Virginia hits the road to play first place rival Hollywood.

Javier Baez went 3-5 with two homers (including a GS) and 7 RBI to help propel Fremont to a 14-7 lead, however Jose Abreu’s slam in the top of the ninth made things interesting before Sean Doolittle closed the door for the 14-11 Fremont win. Drew Butera also homered for Dallas, and Yulieski Gurriel, Carlos Gomez, and Khris Davis also left the yard for the Cannons.
Game #6:  Patrick Corbin left with a shutout, but two homers by Jonathan Schoop and a blown save by Matt Albers allowed Fremont to secure the 5-2 win.
Game #7:  Khris Davis picked up his tenth HR, but it wouldn’t be enough as Chase Anderson rebounds with a 10-strikeout complete game. Dallas wins 4-2.
