Fremont Cannons @ Bethesda Bandicoots

Series Preview

Divisional rivals (?) Fremont Cannons and Bethesda Bandicoots square off as they both take a step towards respectability and .500 records.

Game #1:

Sonny Gray’s wildness keeps the Cannons off balance limiting them to just three hits over 7 frames with Jose Iglesias driving in the game winner with a 7th inning double as the Bandicoots took the opener 3-2. Iglesias drove in two runs with a pair of doubles in the game. Donnie Veal hung on to get two out in the 9th to get his second save of the year. Zach Lutz walked twice and scored half of Fremont’s runs only one of which was earned thanks to Jimmy Paredes razzle dazzle juggling routine in Bethesda’s outfield. Chris Davis drove in RBI #38 with his 15th double.

Game #2: Not a pretty game for the faint of heart as open season was declared on pitching in this combined 19-run, 27 hit game. Thanks only to its best inning of the season so far (and perhaps in franchise history) Bethesda counted eight runs in the 4th capped by a Travis Snider slammo grando to come out on top 12-7. Kevin Slowey (2-3) got hammered for 7 runs (6 earned) in just 3.1 innings while on the other side of the field Bethesda starter Alex Cobb limped through 2.1 innings giving up 3 runs on four hits and four walks without registering a strikeout before field manager Kent Williams tired of his lunacy. Fremont reliever Carter Capps gave up the grand slam ball to Snider, but managed to emerge the game without any of the five runs he was charged with being earned – all thanks to a two out throwing error by Fremont shortstop Adam Rosales who must have been pretty groggy after the game as he was beaned twice by the Bethesda pen. Alex Wood (2-0) was credited with the win after getting five straight outs. David DeJesus (3) and Chris Johnson (2) homered for Fremont with DeJesus walking twice and driving in three runs. Chris Heisey had three hits and drove in three with Anthony Rendon knocking in three as well. Bethesda homers came from Rendon (3), and Snider (3). Chris Davis had a pair of hits to lift his average to .319 but failed to get an RBI.

Game #3:

The pitching gutting continued into Game Three with Fremont starter Ricky Nolasco surrendering five runs on eight hits in six innings as Bethesda stomped to a 10-2 win. Nolasco (1-5) fared as well as his successors – Aaron Crow allowed two runs without registering an out and Chad Qualls gave up three runs on four hits and a walk in one inning. Chris Davis (11) hit the lone homer for Bethesda and drove in two runs. Willin Rosario continued to hit for Fremont driving in both of their runs with a single and a double. Martin Perez (3-1) went six for Bethesda with seven hits and a walk while fanning three.

Game #4: t was Saw III for the Fremont pitchers as they got slashed for a combined 10 runs on 18 hits as Bethesda topped the Cannons 10-7. Juan Nicasio (1-5) took the brunt of the damage. He beleaguered righty was knocked around for 5-2/3 innings for eight runs on 14 hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Danny Farquahar allowed the other two runs for Fremont but both were unearned thanks again to the fielding adventures of Mr. Adam Rosales. Fremont led 7-2 heading into the bottom of the 5th before Nicasio swallowed the grenade. Bethesda scored three runs in the 5th and took the lead with another three in the 6th before Nicasio departed. Erasmo Ramirez fared little better than Nicasio. He mercifully was removed from the mound after giving up six runs on eight hits in 3-2/3 innings. Shawn Kelley (2-1) was the pitcher of record getting credit for the win with Jake Odorizzi notching Save #4 of the season for Bethesda. Rosales had the offensive outb urst of the season so far for himself scoring once with a pair of hits – now hitting .057. Chris Johnson had three hits including his third homer of the year and scored twice to lift his average to .351. Nick Swisher (3) also homered and Carlos Gomez drove in a couple. Bethesda’s offense came from some likely sources (Chris Davis was 5/5 with three runs scored, homer #12 and RBI #41) and some unlikely ones – Jordan Pacheco was 4/5 with a double and three RBIs and Josh Thole was 3/4 with four two-out RBIs.

Game #5:

Chris Davis homered for the third straight game and drove in a couple of runs as the Bethesda offense began to gear down in a 7-2 win over Fremont. Brandon Phillips homered for the first time this year for the Cannons. Anthony Rendon and Tony Cruz each had three hits for the Bandicooots. Ross Detwiler dropped to 0-4 on the season for Fremont after giving up four runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. Alex Cobb (2-4) got back on track allowing just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings. He walked one and fanned six.

Game #6: The gearing down continued and it took late-inning sub Travis Snider’s three run shot off Lucas Luetge in the bottom of the 10th to give the ‘Coots a 6-3 win over Fremont. Fremont starter Freddy Garcia spent the day constantly getting into and mostly out of trouble as he allowed three runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings but didn’t factor into the decision. Bethesda’s Sonny Gray went deep into the contest (8.2 innings) but also didn’t factor into things with a wobbly 4-walk, 4-strikeout performance. Alex Wood retired all four Fremont batters he faced in the 9th and 10th to improve to 3-0 on the year. Jon Jay (2), Snider (4) and Josh Thole (1) homered for Bethesda. Chris Johnson, of course, had another hit for Fremont to finish the game at .341. Chris Davis was 1/4 without an RBI and finished at .335. Freakishly effective backup catcher Thole was hitting .391 albeit with a small sampling of at bats.

Game #7:

Speaking of freakish … Kevin Slowey pitched a fantastic three hit shutout against the burned out Bethesda offense, fanning 11 as Fremont nabbed a 2-0 win to close out the series. Jake (AntiChrist) Arrieta pitched six innings, walking six and striking out six and fell to 1-2. Jimmy Paredes was about the only Bandicoot to figure out Slowey as he was 2/2 with a walk in the game for Bethesda. Willin Rosario had three of Fremont’s five hits including his 6th homer to lead their charge. Chris Johnson went 0/4 while Chris Davis went 1/3 with a walk.

Series Summary *

Spotty pitching performances were the story of the series, but just as Bethesda’s hitting is not that good, Fremont’s pitching is not that bad. Bethesda moves into a temporary lead over Elyria in the division with the series results.
