PAYTON BECOMES FIRST CANNON TO HIT FOR CYCLE

FREMONT  (AP-UPI) July 24, 2001- Outfielder Jay Payton became the first player in the short history of the Fremont Cannons to hit for the cycle, doing so in a rout of the Detroit Crime over the weekend.    “It’s nice to be first in the record books for anything, but you just have to be lucky to hit for the cycle,” said Payton after the game.  The Cannons are in their first year of residence in Fremont, playing in lovely new Heinz Stadium along the banks of the Sandusky River. They arrived before the season started from East Erie Lake, who had relocated a year earlier from Connecticut.  The Cannons pounded the Crime 14-2 in the game, knocking out 22 hits and chasing Detroit starter Brian Moehler. Young lefty J.C. Romero got the win to go to 6-7. Payton’s double was his 29^th of the season, while his homerun was his 15^th.  He also had two singles and his 2^nd triple of the season. Payton knocked in four runs and scored two himself to help the Fremont cause.  “Events like these are fun to watch, they make a blowout exciting,” said Fremont manager Casey Hoch. “ Jay’s has the wheels for the triple and the power for the homer, so he was as good a candidate as any to do it. We told (Mike) Stanley that he has to be the second guy to do it.”
