Iron City Yinzers @ Jersey Nor’easters

Series Preview A key early season Division matchup with the 14-12 Nor’easters pitted against the 21-14 Yinzers. The teams could easily trade placesin the standings.
Game #1: The ageless Derek Lowe starts forJersey and is shelled. Jeremy Hellickson on the other hand is effective if not dominating and the Yinzers win easily 11-4.
Game #2: A really tight game tied 1-1 going to the bottom of the 8th when Sin-soo Choo connects for the game winning homer. Furbush gets the win after blowing the save opportunity in the 8th. Jersey win 2-1. Johnny Cueto continues his dominating pitching this year 6.2 innings of no run ball.
Game #3: Another tight game that went 10 innings before Bryan Pena reserve catcher for the Nor’easters hits a walk off homer giving Jersey a 3-2 win. Sean Burnett gets the win and Tim Byrdak the loss. Wily Peralta for Jersey and Lance Lynn for the Yinzers started the game and piched well. Jersey wins 3-2
Game #4: Iron City bounces back behind Jeff Niemann who pitches 8 innings of shutout baseball. The Yinzers win 8-1.
Game #5: Barry Zito and a trio of relievers hold Iron City to one run and Jersey wins the game 4-1. Kendrick and Choo have 3 hits each and 3 of the 4 RBI’s for Jersey. Zito goes to 3-1 for the year, Furbush gets his 5th save.
Game #6: Another tight game and another last inning win for the Nor’easters. The game was scoreless going to the bottom of the 9th and win the the game on a sac fly by light hitting Yunel Escobar. Derek lowe and 3 relievers team up for the shutout with Brad Boxberger getti9ng the win.
Game #7: Jersey could not bury the Yinzers. Paul Malholm pitches 8 innings one run baseball and the Yinzers win 4-1. Despite a 1.34 era Johnny Cueto drops to 1-2 for Jersey.
Series Summary * All in all a satisfying series for the Jersey Nor’easters as they take the series 4-3.

Manhattan Project @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview The Manhattan Project travels across NJ and PA with their 9-10 record to visit the Columbus Explorers (9-12) as two scrappy teams meet – but the real hope is how will they be in a year or so.
Game #1: AJ Burnett (2-1) vs Milone (1-2) – Soriano pops a 2 run shot (3) in the 1st for a quick, but short lived lead. Manhattan gets it right back in the 2nd on solo HRs by Freeman (3) and Wells (1). Explorers then add 2 more in the 6th started by a fluke 2b by Soriano followed by Lopez rbi double (chasing Burnett from the game). Robertson comes in, walks Gomez and gives up a single to Blackmon and a SF to Nunez to make it 4-2 Columbus. Robertson still has ERA of 0.00, bur was ineffective in shutting down the rally. Bass and Belisario (S 4) hold the Project at bay for the 4-2 Columbus win. Milone goes to 2-2, Burnett (L) also goes to 2-2.
Game #2: Darvish (0-2) vs Chen (1-1) – Columbus again scores 2 in the first on Zimmerman double and Fontenot single. But Darvish, Boggs, Herrmann and Street combine to prevent anymore runs during the game. At the same time, Chen continues his early season wizardary – but the Project manage a run in the 5th on another Wells HR (2). In the 6th down 2-1, Freeman comes up against Chen with no outs and runners at the corners. He grounds back to Chen – Chen figures he’s got good bats supporting him and he turns and fires to 2nd to start a DP, but the tying run scores. 7th inning, Plouffe goes over the wall (2) to make it 3-2 Manhattan and that’s were it ended. MAN 3 COL 2. Darvish the W, Chen the loss – both now at 1-2. Street – S (4)
Game #3: Pomeranz (0-2) vs Tomlin (0-3) – hmmm, is that a couple of losers on the mound? Columbus again scores 2 in the first an another 2 run homer by Soriano (4) – 2nd of the series. But that made it 3-2 Manhattan as the Project opened up the game on a tear. Jackson, 1b, Hill 2b, Schumaker broken bat rbi single, Freeman rbi single, Seager rbi single – still NO OUTS. Somehow Columbus gets the next three guys to limit the damage. Teams trade runs in the 3rd – MAN 4 COL 3 Manhattan’s run came with 2 outs and Seager on 3rd – and a WP while Pomeranz was up (talk about a depressing moment).
But the big depressing moments for the home fans were yet to come as Manhattan plated 2 in the 5th and 4 in the 6th. Big smash in the outburst was a Buck 3 run HR (5). Columbus chipped back 2 inthe 8th, but the Project coasted to a 10-5 win to take a 2-1 series lead. Every Manhattan starter (including Pomeranz) got at least one hit (Pomeranz even got an RBI and scored). 5 batters had 2 hits and Jackson and Seager had 3 hits each in the 18 hit attack.
Pomerantz is a loser no more winning and upping his record to 1-2. Tomlin moves to 0-4 with the loss and is earning a trip to the farm next week.
Game #4: Well, the teams had a rare day off in the midst of the series, Manhattan hopes it doesn’t cool there bats – Columbus hopes for some invigoration.
Duffy (2-1) vs Happ (1-1). For the first time in the series Columbus DOES not score 2 runs (or any runs) in the 1st inning – oh boy says the home crowd, now what. Then Manhattan scores 1 in the top of the 2nd an a Ramos rbi double (in for a tired Buck). However, that was the last positive stat for Manhattan as Happ goes 8.2 innings scattering 7 hits and 2 walks for win # 2 (2-1). However, he did hit two batters – actually he hit Ishikawa twice – the second time knocking him from the game – later reports were that he’d be down for at least 11 days – looks like he might do some DL time.
But what did the home team do? Zimmerman woke up and had a double and HR (4) and 3 rbis, Hairston a HR (3) and 2 rbis and the Explorers go on and win 7-1 to even the series. Duffy took the loss (2-2)
Game #5: Porcello (2-2) vs Harrell (0-3). Harrell is being looked at as one of the two aces for the future, but he’s been off to a rough start this season. Porcello has been surprising for the Project.
Columbus returns to first inning scoring plating 1 when Victorino gets a 1 out single and takes off with the pitch and scores on a Desmond single to RF 1-0 Columbus. That lead only lasts until the top of the 3rd when Jackson drives in Buck with an rbi single. The tie lasts until the bottom half when Zimmerman knocks a 2 out pitcher for an rbi single. 2-1 Columbus. The two mound magicians dig in and go strong into the 7th when Shoppach leads off with his 1st HR of the year to make it 3-1 Explorers. That’s it for Porcello – and that’s it for the scoring. Bellisario pitches the last 1.2 innings for the save (5). When facing his first batter Manhattan had Brantley on 3rd, Jackson on 1st and 1 out. Bellisario then picks off Jackson for the 2nd out and gets Hill to groundout ending the threat in the 8th. He set them down in order in the 9th. Final 3-1 COL, Explorers take the 3-2 series lead. Harrell finally gets win # 1 (1-3), Porcello moves to 2-3 with the loss .The other mishap in this game – On a foul ball, Plouffe collided with Drew and was injured – reports have it looking like 8 days (at least).
Game #6: Series finale, either a split or a 4-2 Columbus endeavor. Worley (2-1) vs Milone (2-2). Well the game was over quickly as Columbus scored 3 in the 1st and 4 in the 3rd. Big bat belonged to Alfonse Soriano as he goes yard twice in the game (5, 6) for 5 rbis – he also had a single (4 HRs in the 6 games this week). Hairston hit his 4th HR and 2 rbis. Milone missed the CG shutout by 1 batter giving up a leadoff walk in the 9th, then a single to Brantley and a 2 out infield rbi single to Berry. He left after 8.2 innings, 5 hits, 2 walks, 1 run. Milone gets the win (3-2), Worley the loss (2-2). Final score 7-1 Columbus
Series Summary * Columbus takes the series 4 games to two. First time I can remember in a series this long that all the W-L decisions went to the 12 starters!!
Soriano a big bat in this series: .350, double, 4 HRs, 6 runs, 10 rbis (and took a day off)!

CWK 5 – CAM 4
Game #7: Clovis takes the game and the series with a 5-1 win.
