Fremont  Cannons @ Southwest Detroit  Fighting Chihuahuas

Series Preview: The high-flying Fremont Cannons take on division rivals Southwest Detroit for 7 games. This series would not see a lot of offense.
Game #1: Chihuahuas ace Ranger Suarez holds Fremont to 4 hits, but one of those is a two-run homer from Carlos Correa in the third inning. Fremont starter Danny Duffy and seven relievers would limit Southwest Detroit to just two hits and no runs. Things looked dicey in the ninth when Jake Cousins walked two straight to load the bases, but Brendan Rodgers grounded out weakly to end the threat. Fremont wins 2-0.

W: Danny Duffy (2-1)
L:Ranger Suarez (3-2)
S: Jake Cousins (4)

HR: SWD- none; FRE- Carlos Correa (6)

Game #2: Fremont strikes first against starter Rodrigo Lopez with a Javier Baez run-scoring single in the 3rd. Cannons starter Sandy Alcantara cruises through 8 innings with 11 strikeouts, but a two-out walk by Dansby Swanson, a steal, a wild pitch, then a single by Ryan McMahon in the top of the eighth ties it at 1-1.

Fremont uses a similar formula in the bottom of the eighth to go up 2-1 after a two-out Javier Baez walk and steal followed by a Mike Yastrzemski run-scoring single. Things are dicey again in the ninth as Anthony Bender loads the bases with one out, but gets a Brandon Lowe strikeout and another Brendan Rodgers groundout to end it at 2-1 Fremont.

W: Sandy Alcantara (4-0)
L: Tyler Wells (0-1)
S: Anthony Bender (2)

HR: SWD- none; FRE- none

Game #3: Fremont gets on top in the first with a groundout by Yulieski Gurriel bringing home Carlos Correa from third. The Chihuahuas tie it up with a Dansby Swanson solo homer in the second. SWD starter Jon Gray pitches well until the 5th, when Fremont starter Shohei Ohtani helps his own cause with 3-run homer. Teoscar Hernandez doubles then Josh Rojas brings him home for a 5-1 Fremont lead.

Miguel Andujar singles home a run in the seventh to make it 5-2, then gets runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the eighth. Giovanny Gallegos comes on and shuts the door, then has an uneventful 1-2-3 ninth inning to end the game with the 5-2 Fremont win. Ohtani finishes with 11 strikeouts in 7 IP. Teoscar Hernandez goes 3-3 with two doubles and a walk.

W: Shohei Ohtani (3-0)
L: Jon Gray (1-5)
S: Giovanny Gallegos (7)

HR: SWD- Dansby Swanson (7); FRE- Shohei Ohtani (15)

Game #4: SWD starter Corbin Burns allows a run in the first inning by hitting Javier Baez with a pitch with the bases loaded, but strikes out Mike Yastrzemski to keep it from getting worse. Fremont starter Dylan Bundy cruises through 8 scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, a single with an error puts Yoan Moncada on second, and Yulieski Gurriel doubles him home to make it 2-0. Garrett Whitlock comes in to close it out in the ninth, but gives up a solo homer to Colin Moran. The Chihuahuas hit two long fly outs, then Whitlock gets the strikeout to end it 2-1 for Fremont. Yulieski Gurriel goes 3-2 with a double.

W: Dylan Bundy (1-0)
L: Corbin Burnes (2-3)
S: Garrett Whitlock (1)

HR: SWD- Colin Moran (3); FRE- none

Game #5: A two-run double from Josh Rojas in the first off SWD starter Erick Fedde gets Fremont on the board first. Mauricio Dubon cranks a solo shot off of Tarik Skubal in the 3rd to bring Southwest Detroit to within one.

Fremont brings in two more in the 4th and loads the bases, but Ian Kennedy is brought in to end the threat with Fremont now up 4-1. Shohei Ohtani blasts a two-run homer in the sixth, but Ryan McMahon tacks on a solo homer in the seventh to cut it to 6-2. Drew Butera’s run-scoring double in the eighth adds on the insurance, and Fremont wins 7-2. Butera goes 3-4 with two doubles.

W: Tarik Skubal (3-0)
L: Erick Fedde (1-1)

HR: SWD- Mauricio Dubon (1), Ryan McMahon (4); FRE- Shohei Ohtani (16)

Game #6: Southwest Detroit finally gets a lead in the series with a run-scoring double by W Contreras in the top of the 1st off Fremont starter Zac Gallen. Fremont is able to tie it up with a Teoscar Hernandez solo shot in the second off of Ranger Suarez.

Both starters would continue to pitch well, but Brandon Lowe’s run-scoring single in the 5th would turn out to be the difference. Byron Buxton leads off the ninth inning with a double, but Paul Sewald is able to strand him there. Gallen racks up 11 strikeouts in the loss. Fremont finishes with just 3 hits.

W: Ranger Suarez (4-2)
L: Zac Gallen (3-1)
S: Paul Sewald (3)

HR: SWD- none; FRE- Teoscar Hernandez (6)

Game #7: Fremont starter Danny Duffy didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning, but Southwest Detroit’s Rodrigo Lopez was also very effective. The game remained scoreless until the ninth. Mauricio Dubon singled, then advanced to third on a Dominic Smith single. Jake Cousins comes on in relief, then Mickey Moniak misses the squeeze and Dubon is tagged out at home. William Contreras advances Smith to third on a groundout, then Jake Cousins throws a wild pitch to allow Smith to score for a 1-0 SWD lead. Lopez says he wants this all the way, and sets down Fremont 1-2-3 to get the CGSO and 1-0 SWD victory. Duffy finishes with 11 strikeouts in 5.1 IP in the loss.
Series Summary: Fremont takes it 5-2! A lot of pitching in this one, as each team is limited to 4 home runs in seven games. Fremont manages just 19 runs, while Southwest Detroit is held to 9. A few timely hits could have swung this series in a different direction.
