Game #4: The Chicago offense finally shows up. Not much of it though. Only 7 Hits, but it’s enough as Andrew McCutchen blasts his 2nd Home of the series. The dominance in this one was Casey Mize who goes 7 Scoreless. Dilson Lamet gets his 1st work in a Mobster uniform to close it out. Team Shutout.

Final Score: Chicago 1 – Coconut Creek 0

Win: Casey Mize 2-0 (2.18)

Series Summary: These are two very evenly matched teams. However, I’m not quite sure that either of these teams will be in the sweet-sixteen when the Mid-West Baseball League Playoffs start in October.

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Corktown  Cycle

Series Preview: Early season rivalry starts up between divisional opponents Bethesda and Corktown. Corktown goes in hoping to capitalize on 3 major injuries to Bethesda starters.
Game #1: But of course, the Bandicoots get another injury. This one was to Paul DeJong ensuring that the Coots are without anyone who has a clue at shortstop for the rest of the series.
The Cycle jumped out to a lead in the first inning when #2 hitter Jazz Chisholm tripled and then scored on Bobby Dalbec’s fly out to the track in left.
Jonathan Schoop (5) tied the game and then some with a two-run shot in the 3rd inning off ace Robbie Ray, but Dalbec erased that in the 6th with a solo shot off John Gant.
Tuey Marcano, pressed into service as the new shortstop, put the Coots in the lead in the 7th with a single that scored Juan Soto (seemed to be on base all the time with 3 walks). Kyle Seager bashed a two-run homer in the 8th to push the Bandicoots into a 6-2 lead.
Codi Heuer doled out a two-run homer to Lewis Brinson in the top of the 9th with two outs but then levelled out to finish off things for a Coots’ win.
BETHESDA 6, CORKTOWN 4
W-Gant (2-1)
L-Ray (2-2)
HR-CRK: Dalbec (6), Brinson (3); BET: Seager (5), Schoop (5)
Game #2: Juan Soto blasted one into the cheap seats off Steven Okert in the bottom of the 8th to help the Bandicoots edge Corktown 4-3.
All three Corktown runs came off solo homers so the Bandicoots dodged bullets in this one. A major part of the dodging was that the four Bethesda pitchers in the game fanned a dozen without issuing a single base on balls.
BETHESDA 4, CORKTOWN 3
W-Mayers (1-0)
L-Okert (0-1)
Sv-Antone (1)
HR-CRK: Dalbec (7), Mountcastle (2), Lowe (6); BET: Soto (6), Seager (6)
Game #3: Bethesda starter Austin Gomber was amazing for five innings but then the Cycle jumped all over him for four runs in the 6th, but it was not enough as the Bandicoots’ bullpen was near flawless securing a 6-4 win.
Jarred Kelenic had the only extrabase hit for Corktown with a homer off Gomber in the 6th while Jeff McNeil doubled to provide Bethesda with its only extra base hit – which drove in two runs which proved to be the difference in the bottom of the 6th that broke the 4-4 tie.
BETHESDA 6, CORKTOWN 4
W-Cessa (1-0)
Sv-Antone (2)
L-Lopez (1-2)
HR-CRK: Kelenic (1)
Game #4: Tuicapita Marcano’s first error as the new Bethesda shortstop led to an unearned run in the 6th but that was all that Alex Cobb would give up as Bethesda came away with a 3-1 win.
Taking a page out of the Corktown books, all three Bethesda runs came on solo homers.
Cobb went the distance for Bethesda, fanning 10 and walking four in a two-hitter.
BETHESDA 3, CORKTOWN 1
W-Cobb (2-3)
L-DeSclafani (0-3)
HR-BET: Schoop (6), Miller (1), O’Hearn (1)
Game #5: Jake Odorizzi fried nine Corktown batters without issuing a walk in seven innings as the Bandicoots clobbered four homers in a 7-1 win over the Cycle .
Jazz Chishom smacked 3 of the Cycle’s eight hits on the day.
The Bandicoots did most of their damage in the first two innings off Cycle’s starter Josiah Gray who gave up all three homers.
BETHESDA 7, CORKTOWN 1
W-Odorizzi (4-1)
L-Gray (1-2)
HR-BET: Schoop 2 (8), Rortvedt (1), Soto (7)
Game #6: Bethesda starter John Gant held the Corktown Cycle but a breakdown in control led to two walks with the bases loaded in the 7th inning as the Cycle come up with a 3-2 triumph.
Robbie Ray was stellar in his start for Corktown allowing just one unearned run on two hits in seven innings. The Cycle won despite having only two hits in the game compared to Bethesda’s whopping four.
Just for shits and giggles, Andrew Vaughn finally got into the action again after resting most of the first five games of the series only to get hit in the face by a pitch and knocked out for 8 days. Awesome.
CORKTOWN 3, BETHESDA 2
W-Ray (3-2)
Sv-Romano (4)
L-Gant (2-2)
HR-BET: Schwindel (4)
Game #7: The Bethesda Bandicoots looked to be in the driver’s seat up 8-2 heading into the 7th but a near complete bullpen collapse opened the door for the Cycle who barged right in and almost tied it up falling just short as Bethesda escaped with an 8-7 win.
Ryan Mountcastle had three hits for Corktown with two singles and a double while Taylor Jones’s triple in the 5th inning added two key runs for the Bandicoots.
BETHESDA 8, CORKTOWN 7
W-Kelly (3-1)
Sv-Tepera (2)
L-Berrios (0-5)
HR-CRK: Dalbec (8); BET: Soto (8), Rortvedt (2), McKenna (2)
Series Summary: Battered, bruised but still standing the Bandicoots had some nice performances from “the Other Guys” that helped them take 6 of 7 from Corktown – a much, much better team than the series results showed.

Dallas  Cougars @ Detroit  Crime

Series Summary: Dallas Cougars take the series over the Detroit Crime.

Sacramento  Capitals @ Tempe  Tempers

Series Preview: Two long-time rivals prepare for a six-game series.
Series Summary: California takes 4 of 6 from Tempe, despite being outscored 14-15. It was a low-scoring affair.

Fremont  Cannons @ Hollywood  Werewolves

Series Summary: Fremont is tough…..They come in and shut Hollywood’s offense down in taking 4 of 6 games in the series.

Baltimore  Comets @ Columbus  Explorers

Game #1: Columbus holds on to win 11-8.
Game #2: Baltimore comes back to win BIG 14-0!
Game #3: Then it’s the Explorers again – 7-2.
Game #4: But those Comets flash the tail again and take game 4 3-2!
Game #5: So of course, Columbus grabs game 5, in 11 innings, 6-5!
Game #6: But those pesky Comets even the series with an 8-3 win for game 6,
Game #7: But there is a 7th game to decide the series and a Juan Lagares solo homer in the 7th decides it, 2-1.
Series Summary: Columbus wins the series 4 games to 3 (probably only series we’ll win – and were surprised we won this one).

Long Beach  Dirt Bags @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Summary: Long Beach takes 5 of 7 taking both 1-run games.

Mesa  Solar Sox @ Tijuana  Bottle Rockets

Series Preview: Two similar teams with shaky rotations and good bullpens face off in Arizona.
Game #1: Andrew Heaney pitches the game of his life…A CG 3 hit shutout with no walks and SEVENTEEN strikeouts!!!
Mesa only gathers 5 hits and strikes out 11 times themselves but win 2-0.
Game #2: Wander Franco triples and homers. I wonder, I Wanda, I Wonder if he’s gonna be any good?
Tiajuana wins 6-4.
Game #3: Another CG shutout for Mesa, this time Justin Dunn walks seven and strikes out 7, but gives up only 2 hits. Randall Grichuk homers and drives in 3. Mesa wins 7-0.
Game #4: Grichuk homers again. So does Jesus Aguilar. Pablo Lopez goes the distance, winning 2-1. Cedric Mullins homers for the Bottle Rockets. That’s notable, as he went 1-12 with 8 Ks in the first 3 games.
Game #5: OK. Enough about Mullins…3-3, 5 RBI, a double and 2 homers. Tiajuana romps 10-0. Nick Mergevicius – 7 ip, 4 hits, no runs.
Game #6: A 6 run 3rd inning is all Mesa needed to win 6-4. Duvall hits a two run homer.
Game #7: Grichuk, Garver, Duvall, and Rosario all homer as Mesa wins again for Heaney (only 9 Ks this time). Mesa hangs on 6-5.
Series Summary: Mesa takes 5 of 7 behind power and some strong pitching. Grichuk hit 3 homers in the series.

Series Summary: Southbend takes the series 4-3 over Virginia; Virginia rallies after the Game 5 loss to win the last 2 games.

Cincinnati  Skyliners @ Yonge Street  Stalkers

Series Preview: The Stalkers have worked around a couple early injuries to hold a slim lead in the Central. The Skyliners come north looking for a series win to keep pace with the red hot Cannons in the East. Play Ball.
Game #1: Spencer Turnbull allowed 2 runs in 5 IP. The CIN bullpen followed with 4 scoreless to slam the door. An attack of shaky defense (3 errors) certainly didn’t help Taijuan Walkers afternoon. Only 1 of the 5 runs he allowed was earned. Adrianza hit his 3rd HR to pace the Skyliners. CIN 6 – YSS 2
Game #2: Gerrit Cole is usually good tonic for a team coming off a loss. No exception this time. He allowed 1ER over 6+ to improve to 3-0 w/ a 1.53 ERA. Mike Zunino had a day at the dish. He went 3-5 with a triple and a homer and knocked home 5. YSS lost Jason Heyward for 14 days. YSS 14 – CIN 2
Game #3: Nestor Cortes was superb. 7.0 IP, 3H, 0BB, 1ER, 12K. Six Stalkers knocked in runs. Adam Fraziers’ double was the only YSS extra base hit. YSS 7 – CIN 2
Game #4: V. Gutierrez improved to 3-0 (2.76 ERA) with 6 serviceable innings. The home team scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th, but came up just short. CIN 6 – YSS 5
Game #5: This game was just cruising right along. A nice pitchers duel between Cole Irvin and Brady Singer. The Stalkers tallied 1 run in the bottom of the 1st. The Skyliners knotted it up in the 7th and we headed to the 8th tied at 1. Singer was brought back out for the 8th and CIN plated 3. YSS tried to rally, scoring in each of the final 2 frames to come up 1 run shy. A second straight gut punch loss. CIN loses R. Urias for 23 days. CIN 4 – YSS 3
Game #6: Good god. Taijuan Walker was great. He went 7, allowed 2H, 2BB, 1ER, and K’d 8. Unfortunately, the Skyliners scored a second (unearned) run off the Stalker pen. I should probably mention that Spencer Turnbull had a no hitter going until Trea Turner hit a solo shot in the 9th. The result…a third straight gut punch. CIN 2 – YSS 1
Series Summary: If I didn’t already have ulcers in my future (or present), I’m fairly certain this series planted some ulcer seeds. Cincinnatti arrived battered and bushed and played their tails off to take 4 of 6 games. They head home to host Hollywood while YSS wanders vaguely to DET.
