Fremont tacks on three runs for insurance in the bottom of the frame with Byron Buxton’s 3-run HR.

Detroit makes it interesting in the top of the 9th, with Machado’s solo HR and a Brandon Belt 2-run HR to bring it to 8-7. Fremont builds on their lead with Ohtani’s second HR (a three-run shot) and Byron Buxton making it back-to-back jacks.

Zack Britton comes in for relief of Detroit starter Mike Minor and departs with a 14-day arm injury. Brandon Belt doubles to lead off the 7th for Detroit’s first hit of the game. Rodon is pulled after the hit, and reliever Giovanny Gallegos gives up a two-run HR to Tommy La Stella to cut it to a 7-2 Fremont lead. Jake Cousins comes on after Detroit puts two on with no outs in the ninth, and shuts it down for the 7-2 win.

W: Carlos Rodon (1-0)
L: Mike Minor (0-2)

HR: DET- Tommy La Stella (1); FRE- Shohei Ohtani 2 (4), Byron Buxton (3)

Game #3: Game 3 turned out to be a pitchers’ duel between the supposed weakest starters in the series: Detroit’s Ryan Weathers and Fremont’s Tarik Skubal. After struggling to gain traction in the first two innings, Fremont manufactures a run via a single, a sacrifice, and Yoan Moncada’s two-out single.

Fremont starter Tarik Skubal is pulled after 5.1 scoreless innings. His replacement, Anthony Bender, can’t hold the lead as Bryce Harper singles in the tying run in the seventh. Fremont gets back on top in the eighth with Yulieski Gurriel’s run-scoring single. Fremont calls again on lefty Brad Wieck in the ninth, and he gets the Crime out 1-2-3 To save the 2-1 Fremont win.

W: Garrett Whitlock (1-0)
L: Trevor May (0-1)
BS: Anthony Bender (1)
S: Brad Wieck (2)

Detroit comes back with two runs in the top of the second, then two more in the fourth and and a Kyle Schwarber solo HR in the fifth for their first lead of the series.

Fremont answers with 3 in the bottom of the fifth with a Shohei Ohtani 2-run HR and Javier Baez solo HR. Detroit ties it up with one in the seventh, but Fremont gets back on top with three runs in the bottom of the frame off of a Carlos Correa 3-run HR. Detroit gets one across in the ninth, but Genesis Cabrera is able to close it down for the 9-7 Fremont victory. Shohei Ohtani goes 3-3 with a HR. Garrett Whitlock comes on in the eighth and promptly gives up a Patrick Wisdom HR to cut it to 3-2 Fremont. The Cannons tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. HR: DET- Patrick Wisdom (3); FRE- James McCann (3)

Game #6: This time, Detroit is the team to get the early lead. Fremont starter Danny Duffy gets tagged for a Manny Machado solo HR and a Brandon Crawford 2-run HR in the first. Fremont cuts it to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the frame. Detroit chases Duffy with four more in the fourth, led by a Yasmani Grandal 2-run HR and Patrick Wisdom’s solo HR. Poor defense from Detroit lets Fremont score three in the seventh to make it a 7-4 game. Fremont gets the leadoff runner on in the ninth, but it ends as a 7-4 Detroit victory for Fremont’s first loss of the season. The Cannons lose despite 4 stolen bases.

W: Madison Bumgarner (2-1)
L: Danny Duffy (1-1)
S: Dakota Hudson (1)

HR: DET- Manny Machado (5), Brandon Crawford (4), Yasmani Grandal (3), Patrick Wisdom (4); FRE- none

SBL WP-N.Pivetta Sv-Steckenrider / CHI LP-M.Stroman

Southbend 4, Chicago 3

Series Summary: Southbend, to their surprise takes the series 5-1 over Chicago. Southbend got just enough pitching and hitting in the series to make the difference. Chicago’s Votto and Alvarez got a couple of big hits but just didn’t come through often enough to get Chicago over the top.

Valdosta  Snappers @ Long Beach  Dirt Bags

Series Summary: Long Beach takes 6 of 7 from Valdosta. In the last 3 games they got 1-hitters by Wheeler and Woodruff and a 4 hitter by Webb.

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview: Ah – week 1 in the books and Columbus was hoping the season was over as they were in 1st Place (tied). But not to be and the decline through the standings should begin about now. Although, the ‘Coots could be had (if I had more hitters)….
Game #1: Well can’t complain about 3 runs in the 1st and 4 in the 2nd (needed those 4 because Bethesda scores twice in the 2nd – more on that later. Those 7 runs were it – Charlie Blackmon (1) with a 2 run homer and Salvador Perez (3) follows with a solo blast in the 1st. Perez (4) then hits a 3 run shot in the 4 run 2nd.

BUT – Kevin Pillar hits a 2 run homer (3) in the 2nd. Then Frank Schwindel (1), Jonathan Schoop (1) and Victor Reyes (1) each hit solo shots in the 6th, 7th and 8th and it’s 7-5 going to the 9th. We still have Liam Hendriks and he closes it out!
BET 5-8-2 LP Alex Cobb (0-2)
COL 7-9-1 WP Kolby Allard (1-1) S Hendriks (3)

Game #2: Well hopes for a big series begin to fade in this one as the Coots take it 7-3. The long ball is again the friend of Bethesda as Andrew Vaughn (2) (solo), Frank Schwindel (2) solo, and Jonathan Schoop (2) (3 run) all homer. You know, if you drop the “W” in Schwindel, he’d probably be my relative. And after a 4 for 5 day, I’d claim him! Salvador Perez (5) homers and a 3 run 5th for Columbus made it close at the time (4-3), but those homers at the end closed it out.
BET 7-11-1 LP Jake Odorizzi (1-1)
COL 3- 7-0 LP J.A. Happ (1-2)
Game #3: Let’s see, Frank Schwindel (3) hits a 2 run shot in the 1st and Kyle Seager (1) adds a solo shot and it’s 3-0 before we come to bat. We try hard to get runs back and manage to tie it by the 4th with solo runs in the 1st, 2nd and 4th. Salvador Perez (6) hits a solo homer in that run. However, the Coots plate 2 in the 6th to grade a 5-3 lead and Enrique Hernandez clubs a solo shot (1) in the 8th, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
BET 5-10-0 WP Gant (1-1) S Zack Littell (1)
COL 4- 7-0 LP Peters (0-1)
Game #4: Oh boy – we got a day off to ski! Back it for game 4 and Columbus takes a 1-0 lead with a solo homer from D.J. LeMahieu in the 1st (he goes 3 for 3 missing the cycle by a triple – he hits that in the NEXT game – and a walk). He scores 3 times.

But Bethesda goes up 2-1 in the 4th with a Paul DeJong (4) homer. Columbus ties it in the 5th on Charlie Blackmon rbi double. Meanwhile, Salvador Perez is beaned and leaves the game. However, it doesn’t matter – in the 8th Asdrubal Cabrera clubs a 3 run double for a 5-2 lead. And Liam Hendriks gets the save. We’re not going to win many games this year – but he will try to SAVE all of them!! Coots start Merrill Kelly goes 7.2 innings and fans 12 in the losing effort.

Meanwhile Kyle Seager (2) and Aledmys Diaz (2) hit 2 run homers in the 4th to mess up Jordan Lyles chance to go 3-0. He gives up 2 run single to Yu-Chen Chang in the 9th to complete the onslaught.
BET 6-6-1 WP Gomber (3-0)
COL 2-2-2 LP Lyles (2-1)

All solo shots. two in the 2nd, 3 in the 6th. I thought J.A. Happ had to be pitching, but no, it was Kolby Allard – he’s now given up 10 in his 3 starts! We get a measly 4 hits (2 more than yesterday) but only half as many runs – 1.
BET 5-13-0 WP Alex Cobb (1-2) S Mike Mayers (1) yes, he comes in in the 8th with 2 on!

Next week we hit the road and visit the Evil Empire. Bethesda keeps their suitcases in hand and head to Triple Creek.
