Selkirk  Steelers @ Tempe  Tempers

Series Preview: Two of the strongest teams went at it in selkirk in the first series of the year. Tempe along time always strong team and now newly decent Selkirk went at it. Tempe has Sanchez and Degrom going in order to overpower the Steelers. Selkirk just hoping to have a good series and stay in the race.
Game #1: It was Wainwright for Tempe vs Fried for Selkirk. Fried got hit hard giving up 4 homers and Keller in relief allowed another (Freeman, bogarts,Albies, Peralta and Pujols) scoring just 6 runs on the 5 homers.Wainwright was only alittle better allowing 4 runs on 2 hoemrs by Hedges and Panik. Goudeau allows a run int he 7th and it was a 6-5 Tempe lead in the 9th. Nelson closing did not work out as Sanchez walked and Semiem hits walk off 2 run homer! 7-6 Selkirk
Game #2: Darvish vs Quantrill, Darvish allowed a Alonso rbi triple in the 1st and a Carlson rbi in the 4th. Quantrill allowed Smith to score on a Peralta hit. then the pens took over going 5 shutout innings as Selkirk holds on 2-1.
Game #3: Anderson was solid allowing just 2 in 7 as Brantley got two rbis. Degrom had a no hitter through 6. in the 7th Degrom fell apart two HBP, Single then a Grand slam by Longoria give Selkirk a 4-2 lead! But Tempe doesn’t give up as Drury and Albies homer as kimbrel blows the save. But in the 12th longoria comes through again driving in Semien. 5-4 Selkirk in 12
Game #4: Tempe was might pissed down 0-3 all one run games. 5 homers freeman, pujols, perez, peralta and martinez. Cease and keller hammered and betts hits a homer in the loss. 10-2 Tempe as sanchez wins
Game #5: Selkrik and Gibson does one better 11-2 as they hit 6 homers Profar, Semien alonso carlson Hedges 2 homers as Wainwright is blasted.
Game #6: But once again its revenge Darvish NO HITTER 3 walks 8 strikeouts as martinez homers 2-0 Tempe.
Game #7: Degrom again was only ok allowing 3 runs in 5.2 innings, but Bogarts, Pujols and Peralta homer in an easy Tempe 11-3 win
Series Summary: So mixed series. Selkirk lost Winker for the final four games losing 3 of them. But Selkirk took the series 4 games to 3 a bit of a surprise with two Degrom starts and Tempe way out hitting them. Of course the huge story was Darvish’s no hitter who has to be considered for pitcher of the week with a 1.23 era in two starts 4 hits in 14.2 innings,
Crazy stats but iffy cards Pujols 3 homers 8 rbis for Tempe and Hedges 4 homers(3 off degrom!) 8 rbis for Selkirk.

Columbus  Explorers @ Valdosta  Snappers

Series Preview: The Snappers and Explorers have similar scouting reports on their pitchers – they don’t have much!! So should be a wide open series.
Game #1: So for opening day, the Explorers call on Jordan Lyles – and he comes through by giving up no runs through 8 2/3 innings scattering 8 hits and no walks, fanning 10! But he misses the CG shutout by 1 batter when he beans Patrick Mazeika with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Steven Cishek comes in to get the final out (with the bases loaded no less). How did Columbus do? 15 hits including an Asdrubal Cabrera 3 run homer in the 2nd.
VAL 0- 8-1 LP Jon Lester (0-1)
COL 8-15-0 WP Lyles (1-0)
Game #2: Encore, encore and J.A. Happ comes through. He sort of does Lyles one better by getting the CG shutout – giving up just 3 hits but he does walk 6 Snappers. Austin Riley and Tom Murphy each get 2 walks (setting them up for a bit later in the series). Tyler Alexander, the Snappers starter was good at hitting bats – 9 Explorer hits off him (and 5 runs). Pablo Reyes gets his 1st Columbus start and goes 3 for 4 with 3 rbis, double, and homer (1) in the 16 hit attack. Charlie Blackmon has a 4 hit day!
VAL 0- 3-0 LP Alexander (0-1)
COL 7-16-1 WP Happ (1-0)
Game #3: Austin Riley finally breaks the Valdosta scoreless streak when he takes a Dillon Peters fast ball over the wall in the 1st inning for his 1st homer of the season. Columbus chip back with 1 in the 4th and goes ahead with another in the 5th. But in the 7th, Yermin Mercedes gets a PH double to plate Wilmer Difo to tie the game. But then Salvador Perez connects for a 2 run homer (1) in the bottom half for a 4-2 lead and Steve Cishek (who already blew the save) and Liam Hendriks hold on for the win.
VAL 2-5-0 LP Touki Toussant (0-1)
COL 4-9-1 WP Cishek (1-0) BS (1), S Hendriks (1)
Game #4: Alright – Snappers have remembered how to hit (and finally realized there wasn’t much to the Columbus staff) and they break out for 18 hits in this game. And Columbus counters with 16 hits. However, it was Tom Murphy who set the tone for the day. 1st 3 times up, he homers (3) and drives in 4 runs. He also singles twice for a 5 for 5 day and scores 5 times! Joining him on the Snappers homer parade is Kurt Suzuki who has a 2 for 6 day with 4 rbis and that homer (1). Ronald Acuna goes 3 for 4 with 3 rbis and those 3 guys drive in 11 of the Valdosta runs. But it almost wasn’t enough. Columbus does strand some guys in a 3 run 9th as they worked for a comeback. But the fall 5 big runs short. Salvador Perez (2) and Trevor Story (1) homer for the good guys. Taylor Hearn goes 6.1 fanning 10, giving up 11 hits but only 3 runs and gets the win as Valdosta finally gets in the win column. Giovanny Urshela goes down for a 6 day injury!
VAL 12-18-0 WP Hearn (1-0)
COL 7-16-3 LP Kolby Allard (0-1)
Game #5: Valdosta keeps the winning wagon rolling, but in an odd way for this series. Austin Riley hits an rbi single in the 5th to spoil a really great day for Steven Brault (8 ip, 8 hits, 1 run, 6 ks). And it’s spoiled because Martin Perez goes the whole way giving up only 5 hits to the Explorers – completely tied them up. (They had 56 hits in the previous 5 games – that’s 14/game average!) And he blanks them for the 1-0 gem!
VAL 1-8-0 WP Perez (1-0)
COL 0-5-1 LP Brault (0-1)
Game #6: So, now that we’ve switched to low scoring contests – Columbus decides to get theirs early as D.J. LeMahieu drives in 2 in the 1st. And Jordan Lyles is trying real hard to go for his 2nd game giving up 0 runs – but fails when Austin Riley hits a solo homer (2) in the 8th! Liam Hendriks comes on to close it out for the 2-1 win but Lyles again is really, really good, 8 ip, 6 hits, 1 run, 7ks – with his 2-0 start and 0.54 era in 16 2/3 innings, could he somehow be a SURPRISE Pitcher of the Week?
Jon Lester looks completely different this start as he goes 8 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs (4 walks) – that 1st inning and no offense did him in. The BIG BLOW to Valdosta came when Ronald Acuna crashed into the wall making a stellar inning ending, 2 run saving catch and will miss the next 22 days!
VAL 1-6-0 LP Lester (0-2)
COL 2-4-0 WP Lyles (2-0)
Game #7: OK – enough of the pitchers’ duels, they’re not supposed to be good. So bring on 28 hits and 15 runs, only question is, who scored more? I’ll give you a hint – Valdosta was up by 6 in the 9th and Joel Payamps pitches a 1/3 of an inning and gets a SAVE!
Lane Thomas starts things off with a solo homer (1) in the 1st. But that was just a warm-up. In the 2nd he singles in 2. Then Austin Riley clubs his 3rd homer of the season, a 3 run shot. So J.A. Happ leaves and Mike Fiers comes in. Miguel Sano greets him with a solo shot (1). Then after a single, D.J. Peters homers (1) for 2 more runs and it’s 9-0 Valdosta. However, the Snappers will go scoreless for the next 7 innings (big whup).
Columbus gets 2 on a 2 run D.J. LeMahieu homer (1) in the 5th, they get another on a Brock Holt SF in the 6th. And then in the 9th, down 9-4, Payamps comes in and Salvador Perez doubles with the bases loaded making it 9-6. But then he gets the next batter to end the game!
VAL 9-16-0 WP Antonio Senzatela (1-0)
COL 6-12-2 LP Happ (1-1)
Series Summary: About what expected – if these two teams played each other all season, there would be a chance 1 of them might just finish over .500. However, in reality, this weeks 3 and 4 wins will possibly be the best they do all season. Columbus gets the upper hand in round 1 – and maybe Pitcher of the week (we also had a lot of good batters ….)

Bethesda  Bandicoots @ Harsens Island  Walleye

Series Preview: Yeehaw, release the pigeons. Bethesda opens things up against the Harsens Island Walleye.
Game #1: Andrew Vaughn responds to the weird choice of hitting leadoff for the ‘Coots with two hits including a homer as Merrill Kelly pitches a gem in a 5-1 win over the Walleye. Harsens Island loses Leury Garcia for 5 days thanks to an inside Kelly fastball.
Game #2: Juan Soto and Aledmys Diaz went deep to help Bethesda to a 4-2 win. Ty France and Jacob Stallings both go down to injury for the snakebit Walleye (is that possible:) with multi-game injuries. Bethesda starter Austin Gomber beaned France while Stallings was actually bit by a snake. Diaz had three hits for Bethesda and Mathisen went yard for the visitors.
Game #3: Bethesda cranked out 17 hits but stranded 12 while the Walleye were slightly more efficient leaving just nine in their first win of the season 6-5. Nicky Lopez had three hits for Harsens Island with Jonathan Schoop doing the same for the Bandicoots.
Game #4: Justin Steele pitched eight very good innings, fanning eight without walking any in a 3-0 win for Harsens Island. JP Feyereisen made things exciting with a couple of walks in the 9th but hung on for the save. Adam Engel hit his second homer of the series with Nolan Arenado adding another.
Game #5: Mike King allowed just three hits and went the distance as the scoring drought continued for Bethesda in another shutout win for the Walleye – this one 4-0. nolan Arenado homered for the second straight day with Josh Naylor, Nicky Lopez and Gavin Lux each getting two hits. Aledmys Diaz continued his vain bid for more playing time with another multi-hit game (albeit wasted) for Bethesda.
Game #6: The Bandicoots cranked out four homers – including two by Paul DeJong – but it was Andrew Vaughn with a bases loaded single into the left field alley in the bottom of the 10th that brought home the W as Bethesda won 8-7 in extra innings. Vaughn had three hits on the day with Juan Soto and Kevin Pillar also homering.
Game #7: Austin Gomber improved to 2-0 on the season with a three hitter as the Bandicoots downed the Walleye 3-0. Paul deJong was at it again with his 3rd homer of the season … he has all of 3 RBIs for his efforts … ugh … thanks in no small part to Kyle Seager hitting .107 in front of him.
Series Summary: The Walleye and the Bandicoots fumbled around for seven games with Bethesda barely coming out on top with a 4-3 series win. Both teams have a way to go to be good enough to compete for the division crown.

Dallas  Cougars @ Mesa  Solar Sox

Series Preview: Season opening series.
Game #1: Harold Castro led the Cougars 13 hit attack with 3 doubles while Lucas Giolito went 7 innings plus as Dallas wins the season opener 6 to 2. Adam Duvall hit two solo homers for the Solar Sox
Game #2: Kyle Hendrick pitched a complete game shutout allowing only 5 hits while punching out 9 for Mesa. The only run of the game on Adam Duvall’s 3rd homer of the year. Solar Sox win 1 to 0.
Game #3: Victor Robles led of the bottom of the first with a solo blast and Dallas put the game away with a 4-run 6th featuring a RBI triple by Jose Abreu followed by a RBI double by Ramon Laureano. Zach Plesac gets his first win of the year as the Cougars win 5 to 1.
Game #4: Logan Allen self destructed in the 4th hitting batters and allowing dingers giving up 9 two out runs only escaping when Wong was thrown trying to advance to 2nd as the final run of the inning scored. Solar Sox win 10-2
Game #5: Dallas scores two in the first inluding Abreu’s first homer of the year, but Mesa would score the next 6 runs of the game to win game 5 by a score of 6 to 2.
Game #6: Pablo Lopez closes out the opening series by pitching a complete game shutout for Mesa. He allowed only 5 hits and struck out 10. Mesa wins 3 to 0
Game #7:
Series Summary: Mesa takes the series 4 games to 2.

Coconut Creek  Crushers @ Virginia Sluggers

Series Preview: With no pitching, Virginia looks like a bottom feeder this season. Coconut Creek has hitters and, oh by the way, good pitching,…starters and bullpen. Virginia expected to lose, and rightfully so.
Game #1: CCC 4-1 W – J.Musgrove (1-0) L – L.Castillo (0-1) SV – Pomeranz (1)

E.Jimenez’s solo HR in the 5th was the only run VIR was able to get off J.Musgrove as CCC took the first game of the series. S.Hilliard’s RBI single in the 6th tied the game at 1 each and B. Nimmo launched a 3-run blast in the 7th to give CCC a 4-1 lead they never relinquished.

Game #2: VIR 4-3 W – J.Chargois (1-0) L – L.Tivino (0-1)

B.Nimmo’s solo HR in the 1st and J.Walsh’s 2-run HR three batters later staked CCC to a 3-0 lead. It evidently upset VIR starter T.Williams. He proceeded to throw 8 innings of goose eggs while wiffing 13 Crushers batters. No problem for CCC as C.Flexen also threw goose eggs, but for only 7 innings. Flexen gave up a 2-run double to J.Segura and a RBI double to G.Springer as VIR mounted a comeback and tied the score at 3 each. VIR completed the comeback when S.Murphy walked it off with his first HR of the year.

Game #3: VIR 3-2 W – H.Robles (1-0) L – L.Trivino (0-2)

Another close, 1-run game, another walk off, another surprising VIR win. After 10 innings, M.Haniger’s 2-run jack for CCC and VIR’s two RBI hits had tied the score and and left the two teams deadlocked after 10. In the bottom of the 11th B.Reynolds lined a 1-out single and went to second on a fielders choice. C.Frazier was given an intentional walk and C.Biggio followed with a walk-off double for the VIR win.

Game #4: VIR 6-3 W – T.McKenzie (1-0) L – B.Snell (0-1) SV-J.Chargois (1)

McKenzie out-dueled Snell while striking out 12 CCC batters on the way to his first victory of the season. A.Velazquez’ 3-run triple in the 4th along with S. Murphy’s 2-run HR in the 8th gave VIR more runs than B.Nimmo’s and M.Haniger’s RBI singles, Bad News for CCC – A.Bohm injured for 13 days. He was the 3rd batter in the series hit by VIR pitchers.

Game #5: CCC 4-2 W – A.Civale (1-0) L – W.LeBlanc (0-1) SV – D/Pomeranz (2)

CCC rode M.Haniger’s 3-run triple and 3 innings of no- hit ball from the bullpen to get their 2nd win of the series. Starter A. Civale tossed 5.2 innings of 3 hit ball. One of those hits G.Springer’s first long ball of the season.

Game #6: CCC 11-5 W – J.Musgrove (2-0) L- K.Finnegan (0-1)

The Crushers lived up to their name and crushed the Sluggers. With T.O’Neill (3-4 with a homer and 2 RBI) and S.Hilliard (2-5 a homer with2 RBI) leading the way, CCC pounded out 13 hits. However, the game was only 6-5 in favor of CCC when they exploded for 5 runs in the top of the 9th to secure the victory.

Game #7: VIR 3-0 W – L.Castillo (1-1) L – C.Flexen (0-1) SV – J.Chargois (2)

With the series tied 3-3, the rubber game went to VIR. L.Castillo pitched 8.2 innings of shutout ball before handing off to Chargois for the Save. B.Reynolds’ 4th inning RBI single was all Castillo needed but R.Devers added a late inning 2-run homer to seal the win.

Series Summary: Surprising turn of events as Virginia wins the series 4-3. Other than CCC’s blow-out win, the other games were close. S. Hilliard’s 10 hits and .455 BA led CCC. L.Castillo’s shutout was VIR’s highlight. Sidenote: – VIR pitchers hit 5 CCC batters in the 7 games CCC pitchers only 1. No fights broke out.

Rosemere  Renegades @ Triple Creek  Patriots

Series Summary: A bunch of mostly closed games ends up in a 4-3 TCP series win

Baltimore  Comets @ Sacramento  Capitals

Game #1: Max Scherzer vs. Sean Manaea

Thanks to a Josh Bell 3-run homerun, Baltimore scores 3 runs before Scherzer records an out. The Comets will add 2 more runs in the 7th, compliments of back-to-back homeruns off the bats of Straw and Gallo. AJ Pollock’s 2 run shot in the 8th brings Sacramento back within a run, but Baltimore holds on for a 5-4 victory on opening day, surviving a 13 hit Captials attack. Pollock and Posey each had 3 hits for Sacramento.

CAPITALS 4 /13/ 0
COMETS 5 / 6 / 0
WP – Manaea (1-0)
LP – Scherzer (0-1)
S – Jansen (1)

Game #2: Rich Hill vs. Sonny Gray

Carson Kelly’s 2 run homerun in the 6th propels Baltimore to its 2nd straight victory. Myles Straw had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, for Baltimore. Sonny Gray struck out 9 Capitals to earn his first win of the season.

CAPITALS 1 / 7 / 1
COMETS 5 / 9 / 0
WP – Gray (1-0)
LP – Hill (0-1)

Game #3: Steven Matz vs. Jameson Taillon

This was a WILD one! Stanton put the visitors up in the 1st with an RBI single. Josh Bell’s 2nd homerun of the series, ties it after 2. After Sacramento scores 2 in the 3rd to take back the lead, Andy Ibanez slugs a Grand Slam off Matz to give Baltimore a 5-3 lead. The Comets would add a run in the 6th to increase the lead, but Giancarlo Stanton’s 3 run blast caps a 4 run Sacramento 7th, for a 7-6 lead. Jorge Polanco would hit a game tying, RBI single off Jose Alvarez, in the bottom of the 8th, to knot the game at 7. The teams would exchange zeroes, until the bottom of the 13th, when Josh Donaldson’s RBI single plates Polanco with the game winner.

Stanton led the Sacramento attack with 4 hits, including a double and homerun, and 5 RBIs. Josh Harrison had a double, 2 singles, and knocked in 2. For Baltimore it was Ibanez’s 5 RBIs leading the way. The Comet bullpen was the difference, as 5 relievers combine to pitch 6 shutout innings to end the game. Pollock was hit by a Taillon fastball and will miss 5 days.

CAPITALS 7 / 15 / 1
COMETS 8 / 11 / 0 13 innings
WP – Zimmerman (1-0)
LP – Sadler (0-1)

Game #4: Tyler Glasnow vs. Hyun-Jin Ryu

After an off day, the teams square off again. Buster Posey’s strong start continues, as he doubles in the 1st to score Harrison with the game’s 1st run. The Sacramento lead was short lived; in the bottom of the 1st Josh Bell and Aaron Judge go back-to-back, and Renfroe follows later in the inning with an RBI double for a 4-1 Baltimore lead. Straw’s RBI double in the second ends Glasnow’s day early. Tyrone Taylor would club a 2-run homerun in the 4th, but that’s as close as Sacramento would come. Stanton, Posey, and Garcia each had a pair of hits for the Caps. Straw had 2 more double, and a single, and Judge hit his first 2 homeruns of the year for Baltimore.

CAPITALS 3 / 9 / 0
COMETS 7 / 11 / 0
WP – Ryu (1-0)
LP – Glasnow (0-1)

Game #5: Joe Ross vs. Ryan Yarbrough

It’s Posey again, this time with 2 run homeruns in the 1st and 7th to lead Sacramento to its first win of the season. Trey Mancini also homered for the Capitals, and Ross pitches 7 and 1/3 for the victory. Donaldson and Renfroe each homered for Baltimore.

CAPITALS 6 / 10 / 2
COMETS 4 / 10 / 1
WP – Ross (1-0)
LP – Yarbrough (0-1)
S – Graveman (1)

Game #6: Max Scherzer (0-1 6.43 ERA) vs. Sean Manaea (1-0 1.80 ERA)

Many Pina hits a 2-run homerun for the Capitals and Josh Bell hits his 4th homerun of the series for Baltimore, and its 3-3 after 3. It will stay that way until the top of the 7th, when a Stanton RBI double puts Sacramento in front 4-3. To the bottom of the 8th, Scherzer walks Straw with one out. Jose Alvarez comes on in relief, and Joey Gallo greets him with a 2-run blast over the right field fence for the 5-4 lead. Judge would add a 2 out solo homerun to extend the Comet lead to 6-4. Kenley Jansen pitches a perfect 9th to save the game and series win. Scherzer struck out 13 Comet batters in the losing effort.

CAPITALS 4 / 7 / 0
COMETS 6 / 5 / 0
WP – Bummer (1-0)
LP – Alvarez (0-1)
S – Jansen (2)

Series Summary: It was an improbable 5-1 series victory to open the season for Baltimore. By the end of the season Sacramento will probably be 20-30 games better than Baltimore, but for 1 series, with its “best” pitching available, the Comets come through. Baltimore bats blasted 14 homeruns over the 6 game series, and the pitching was just good enough to win. Over the long haul, this team will score some runs, but the pitching depth isn’t there to make a push at the playoffs.

Buster Posey had a great start for Sacramento, going 10 for 22 with 3 doubles, 2 homeruns, 3 runs scored, and 7 RBIs (.455/.478/.864/1.342). Myles Straw led Baltimore with an 11 for 23, 5 doubles, 1 homerun, 7 runs scored, 2 RBIs and a stolen base series (.478/.538/.826/1.365).

Chicago  Mobsters @ Detroit Crime

Win: Madison Bumgarner 1-0 (4.50)
Loss: Marcus Stroman 0-1 (5.14)

Game #4: This one was ugly for the Crime as they allowed 23 Hits, 17 Runs & struggled mightily to even finish this one out. Seven Chicago Mobsters had an RBI in this one. Final Score: Detroit 6 – Chicago 5 (10 Innings)

Win: Aaron Loup 2-1 (8.31)
Loss: Jose Cisnero 1-1 (3.00)

Game #6: Manny Machado with 2 Hits including a Home Run, Chris Bassitt pitches another 7 strong Innings for Detroit. Chicago struggles to find any offense.

Final Score: Detroit 2 – Chicago 1

Win: Chris Bassitt 1-0 (1.93)
Loss: Juan Minaya 0-1 (5.40)
Save: Daniel Hudson #3

Game #7: Manny Machado Homers as does Yasmani Grandal as the Crime take another one from the Mobsters. Aaron Nola goes 6 Innings allowing only 1 Earned Run.

Final Score: Detroit 3 – Chicago 1

Win: Aaron Nola 1-0 (3.00)
Loss: Lance McCullers 0-1 (4.15)

Series Summary: Detroit takes the series 5 games to 2. Chicago’s bullpen is bad. Wildly bad. With a capital “W”. The Mobsters look to rebound next week in Southbend. Detroit continues their opening road trip with a big series against the Cannons in Fremont.

Tijuana  Bottle Rockets @ Yonge Street  Stalkers

Series Preview: Tijuana hosts Yonge Street for 7 games to start the season.
Series Summary: Yonge Street spoils the opening series for the hometown Bottle Rockets by taking 5 out of 7. Trea Turner led the way for the visitors, hitting 3 homers and swiping 4 bags in the 7 games.

Hollywood  Werewolves @ Southbend  Lynx

Series Preview: Hollywood faces rival Southbend in the opening series of the year.
Game #1: Hollywood sends hometown favorite Craig Morton in the opener. Usually this spot is reserved for Clayton Kershaw, however with his limited action they went with their 2021 ace. He did not disappoint.

Hollywood wins 4-2

Morton goes 6-strong for the win (1-0)
Diego Castillo picks up his first save of the season (S-1)

Hollywood’s Matt Olson (1) & newcomer Nick Castellanos (1) both go yard.
Southbend’s Jake Fraley (1) hammers one for the visitors.

Game #2: Hollywood’s Ben Gamel jumps all over Southbend ace Freddy Peralta, hammering (2) 2-run homers staking Dustin May with a 4-0 early lead.

Hollywood wins 6-1
May goes 5-strong for the win (1-0)

Homers –
Hollywood: Gamel hits 2 (2); Paul Goldschmidt (1)

Game #3: Southbend jumps out to a 2-0 on newly acquired Wade Miley and then Hollywood fights back with 5 in the 6th. You’d think that was it, right? Well nope, Southbend chisels their way back in and end up winning in 11 innings. Max Muncy hammered (2) homers and a double for Southbend

Southbend wins 7-5

Luke Jackson throws 3-strong relief innings, going 9-up and 9-down. for the win (1-0)
Drew Steckenrider gets the save (S-1)

Homers –
Southbend: Max Muncy his 2 (2); Kyle Tucker (1)

Game #4: Well, this one will lead to the pitcher of the week hands down. Hollywood sends out rookie Daulton Jefferies with the intent of him going 5 innings MAX. Well, he was unhittable (literally), so Hollywood left him in. He pitched two over the minimum.

Holywood wins 4-0

Dustin May wins (2-0)

Jersey  Nor’easters @ Portland  Lumber Jax

Series Preview: Opening day in Portland. If not in reality… in hopes and dreams. Long Beach Dirt Bags visiting.
Game #1: Walker Buehler 19 YZ (POR) vs Lance Lynn 16 XYZ (LB)
B1 Cron singles in Conforto to get Portland on the board. 1-0 POR.
T4 Dirt Bags get their first hit in the game off Buehler, and later LaMonte Wade singles in two. 2-1 LB.
T5 Grossman hits a two-out blooper with runner on third (AKA 8) to give LB the 3-1 lead, then after Grossman steals second, Escobar doubles him in knocking Buehler from the game. LB 4-1.
T6 Wade triples again with one out, and after Turner walks, Francisco Mejia also triples. LB 6-1.
Final score
LB 6 POR 1.
Game #2: John Flaherty 15 XY (POR) vs Zach Wheeler 16 XY

T1 Escobar walks and then Kevin Kiermaier hits the 4th triple in ~9 innings for the Long Beach, as they clearly know the tricky corners in the LumberJax stadium. Wade grounds Kiermaier in with two outs. 2-0 Long Beach.
B2 Alex Dickerson doubles to lead off the inning, then Wheeler strikes out the next three… but the 3rd strike gets away from Mejia and Gosselin makes his way to first. I was actually hoping Wheeler would strike out Conforto, giving him a 4 strikeout inning, but Conforto singled in Dickerson.
Wheeler then takes his anger at missing the four strikeout inning on Gleyber Torres by drilling him in the head, injuring him for the rest of the series.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. comes up to the plate with the bases loaded… and Wheeler, strikes him out to get his four strikeout inning anyway! 2-1 LB
T3 Flaherty gets revenge by nailing Escobar in the head… and Escobar appears to be out for a significant amount of time (21 days). After two runners reach for the Dirt Bags, Justin Turner doubles them both in. 4-1 LB
B5 CJ Cron reaches on error for Portland, and then Zimmer beats outs an infield grounder for hit. Alex Dickerson then doubles in Cron. Iglesias then gets a ground another infield single scoring Zimmer from third.
Portland still down 4-3 but runners on first and third with no outs. Wheeler then fans Jeffers, and Gosselin and Wheelers gets pumped (advances to a 17). Conforto grounds out to end the inning. 4-3 Dirt Bags.
B7 Portland ties the game on a Jose Iglesias homerun.
B9 CJ Cron doubles vs Treinen to lead off the inning, and then leaves for PR Duggar. Zimmer tries, and fails to bunt Dugger to third as Dugger gets nailed. Zimmer then steals second before the Dirt Bags tighten up and get out of the inning.
Extras!
T10 Solak doubles to start the inning, then Grossman doubles him in. Torreyes singles Grossman to third and the LumberJax are in deep trouble. Grossman scores on a PB and Torreyes takes second. 6-4 Dirt Bags. Portland then turns a line drive into a double play. Wade then flys out to Conforto… but no, Conforto has the ball pop out of his glove scoring Torreyes as Wade takes second on the error. 7-4 Dirtbacks heading into the bottom of the 10th.
Treinen then shuts down the Jax 1-2-3 to earn the win. Portland leaves 13 runners on base in the loss.

Game #3: Tyle Mahle 11 XY (POR) vs Brandon Woodruff 16 XYZ (LB)
B1 Michael Conforto hits a solo homerun for Portland. 1-0 POR
T2 Solak hits yet another triple for the Dirt Bags. Torreyes picks him with a SF. 1-1.
T3 Kiermaier triples to lead it off. Those Dirt Bags don’t like to stop at second. Wade singles Kiermaier home. 2-1 LB.
T6 Kiermaier singles and steals second. Wade walks. Francisco Mejia… triples again scoring Wade, but gets thrown out trying for home. 3-1 LB.
B6 Portland loads the bases with 1 out and Guerrero up. Vladdy flies out, but C.J. knocks the ball out of the park, and Woodruff out of the game with a huge grand slam. 5-3 POR.
T9 Portland trying to hold on for their first win… but Wade hits a two-run HR to tie things up.
T10 Varsho doubles, but Dirt Bags can’t plate him.
T11 Wade puts down a nice Sac bunt to give the Dirt Bags the lead. LB 6-5.

B12 Green comes in to shut the Jax out earning the save.
Game #4: German Marquez 7Y (POR) vs Logan Webb 15 YZ (LB)
B2 Cron singles and Arroyo hits a homerun to give Portland a 2-0 lead.
T4 Justin Turner takes his turn hitting a dinger. 2-1 POR
T6 Grossman his another HR for Long Beach to tie it up. Later Turner singles in Wade to give Long Beach the lead. 3-2. Mejia keeps things going with a single RBI, and Solak triples (the 8th triple of the year for LB). 6-2 Long Beach as they start to break it open.
B6 Arroyo hits his second dinger of the game. 6-3 LB.
B7 Noe Ramirez comes on to pitch… and is grade 21 instead of 16.
T8 Turner hits his second HR of the game. 7-3 DB.
B9 Portland hits back to make doubles close the final score to 7-4 Long Beach
Game #5: Zac Eflin 6YZ (POR) vs Wily Peralta 12 (LB)
T4 Justin Turner doubles in Wade to start the scoring.
B4 Guerrero walks, Cron doubles, and A. Dickerson homers them both in 3-2 Portland.
T5 Torreyes hits a HR to tie it up.
T7 Long Beach takes the lead after Portland’s fourth error. 4-3 LB.
B7 Michael Conforto ties the game with a solo HR.
T8 Long Beach takes the lead right back of a two-run Varsho bomb. 6-4 LB. Solak says ditto as LB breaks it open. 8-4.
Final score Dirt Bags 8 POR 4.
Game #6: Walker Buehler 19 YZ (POR) vs Lance Lynn 16 XYZ (LB)
T1 Turner scores Kiermaier on a SF. 1-0 LB
T3 Grossman hits a solo HR. 2-0 LB.
T8 Dirt Bags score again while I was getting a beer. 3-0 LB.
Final score 3-0 Dirt Bags
Game #7: Jack Flaherty 15 XY vs Zach Wheeler 16 XY
T1 Kiermaier gets thrown out at 3rd trying for a triple. Highlight of the series for the Lumber Jax… CUTTING HIM DOWN baby. Wade up next, HR. 1-0 LB. We had to celebrate while we could. Turner adds another solo HR. Seriously. 2-0 Dirty Dirt Bags.
T3 Wade… guess what? Triples. Eighth of the series for the Dirt Bags.
T5 Arroyo hits his 3rd meaningless dinger of series. Half his expected total for the year. Wait? It can get worse?
T8 Dugger hits a solo HR for Portland. 3-2 Dirt Bags.
T9 Grossman doubles in Mejia. 4-2 Dirt Bags.
B9 Cron singles, and Arroyo gets hit by Treinen. And then Treinen gets a double play to send Portland fans home, with no wins and over 8% of their home games out the door.
Series Summary: Dirty Bags come to Portland and get a rare seven game sweep. Portland hits .192 for the series… which… against 4 A starters and one B…. but Portland fields a good pitching staff too, in theory… and while the Dirty Bags didn’t hit that well for average… they did win… seven… straight… games. Portland looked like clowns in the field… with 11 errors.

L: Wil Crowe (0-1)

HR: MCM- Daz Cameron (1), Bobby Bradley (1); FRE- Austin Hays (2), Mike Yastrzemski (1), James McCann (1)

Game #7: The best game of the series. A James McCann drop starts the Motor City offense in the 2nd, leading to a Dylan Moore grand slam off of Shohei Ohtani. Austin Hays popped a two-run homer in the 7th to get it within one run.

In the bottom of the ninth, PH Byron Buxton doubled, then was singled home by Manuel Margot to tie it. On the next pitch, Fremont gets a successful hit-and-run from Yuli Gurriel, and with Manuel Margot’s wheels are able to score the winning walk-off run. Fremont wins 9-8!
