Harsens Island Walleye @ Sacramento Capitals

Series Summary: The Capitals win 4 of 6 from the Walleye.

Chicago Mobsters @ Virginia Sluggers

Series Preview: The hi-flying first place AL Central Chicago Mobsters came blowing east to bring havoc to AL East rival Virginia,…and they did.
Game #1: CHI 16-7 W-C.Martinez (2-1) L-C.Archer (8-10)

CHI brought the lumber to game 1. They started off slow with a simple 2-run homer from N.Cruz in the 3rd to go up 3-1. Then a 4th inning RBI double by J.Votto and an RBI ground out took it to 5-1 CHI. VIR comes back in the bottom of the 4th on an E.Jimenez RBI single, a SF, a D.Lugo RBI single, and a W. Merrifield RBI single. Suddenly it was tied 5-5. Well, the Mob evidently didn’t like that and proceeded to tally 5 runs in the 6th. The first 3 of those runs came on back-to-back homers by N.Goodrum and L.Arraez. One out later A.Bregman sent one deep to left-center, ” SPRINGER and JIMENEZ both going back … later! …BREGMAN really hammered that one…a home run.” And that quick it was 10-5 CHI. In the 8th D.Santana ripped a 2-run double and J.Votto an RBI single,…13-5. One inning later N.Cruz crushed his 2nd homer of the game, a 2-run blast, and M.Taylor ended the scoring with an RBI single. 16 runs on 24 hits for CHI. The pitching staff for VIR was beaten.

Game #2: CHI 8-1 W-J.Urias (8-1) L-E.Hernandez (7-5)

Well, the bats of CHI had not cooled down. They pounded 17 hits in this game as they feasted once again on VIR’s poor pitching staff. D. Santana 3-5 with 2 RBI, A.Bregman 3-5, a homer and 2 RBI, J.Votto 2-5 with a solo shot and B.Posey 4-4 with 3 RBI. Urias only went 6 innings but only allowed 3 hits and the pen took it from there and closed out the win.

Game #3: CHI 11-2 W- N.Syndegaard (15-8) L-J.Rodriguez (2-5)

Well, not as many hits this time,…only 12, but it did produce 11 runs! How do you stop this team?? VIR was feeling good in the 5th with a 2-1 lead,…then the roof caved in! Bregman singles to tie it, Votto plates 2 for the lead, Goodrum, and Arraez single in runs and Choo doubles in 2 and it’s 8-2 CHI. Cruz drives in another and CHI is coasting with a 9-2 advantage. They add 2 more in the 8th for good measure and end the game with another victory as they jump out to a 3-0 series lead.

Game #4: VIR 9-4 W-L.Castillo (15-1) L-M.Stroman (11-10)

After being outscored in the first three games 35-10 and out hit 53-20, VIR is finally able to put some of their own hits together and score a few more runs than CHI. Of course, it helped to have Castillo on the mound as he held CHI to 7 hits over 8 innings even though they managed to score 4 runs (thanks to a 2-run jimmy-jack by S.Choo). By that time, the 5th inning, VIR had already scored all their runs thanks to the longball. VIR flexed its muscles as E.Jiminez started with a solo shot in the 2nd followed by W.Merrifield’s 2-run double for a 3-0 lead. In the 4th, G.Springer added 2 more with a drive over the LF wall and 2 batters later, E.Jiminez hit his 2nd of the game plating 2 more runs and making it 7-1 VIR. C. Santana would end the VIR scoring in the next inning with a 2-run homer, VIR’s 4th of the game. And finally, VIR was in the win column.

Game #5: VIR 3-2 W-T.Hill (3-3) L-F.Vazquez (4-4)

The closest game of the series and strangest because of it’s most unpredictable ending. A G.Springer SF in the 1st was short-lived as CHI countered with a J.Votto RBI single in the 2nd and D.Santana Homer that just did get over the glove of C.Frazier. Now, it gets weird, T.Bauer had gone 7 innings allowing 3 hits and the 1 run. Grade 21 A.Chapman faced 4 batters in the 8th and in came 21 grade, F. Vazquez, for the 9th. G.Springer grounds out, and then,… “C. FRAZIER facing F. VAZQUEZ, B 9th, 1 Out, Bases Empty, Behind 1-2…The pitch … a blast to center … TAYLOR runs straight back … turns … he’ll look
but he won’t touch it … it’s long gone! … home run for FRAZIER … Clint ties the game!… Clint trots around the bases … he loves a trip downtown … he claps his hands…MOBSTERS 2, SLUGGERS 2

* B. ANDERSON facing F. VAZQUEZ, B 9th, 1 Out, Bases Empty, Tied 2-2…The offering to ANDERSON … muscled to deep left … this one has a passport … adios, amigo…it’s all over! … it’s long gone! … back-to-back homers for the SLUGGERS!…Brian W. trots around the bases … he loves a trip downtown … he claps his hands…MOBSTERS 2, SLUGGERS 3 ” And just like that VIR pulls a stunner of a win!

Game #6: VIR 8-2 W-C.Archer (9-10) L-A.Garrett (1-2)

Maybe it was the last game,…a stunner of a 3-2 VIR win. Maybe it was being beaten so bad in the first 3 games of the series, Whatever it was, VIR was able to out hit and outscore CHI in the final game of the series and come out with a 3-3 split. J.Votto gave CHI the only runs they would get in the game with a 2-run blast in the top of the 2nd. R.Devers and W.Merrifield would counter with solo shots in the bottom half of the inning for a 2-2 tie. The tie was broken in the next inning when C.Santana stepped in, “SANTANA really hammered that one … a home run…Carlos trots around the bases … he loves a trip downtown … he’s greeted at the plate.” W.Merrifield would make it 5-2 in the 6th with his 2nd homer of the game. R.Devers 2-run double and J.Segura’s SF added the last 3 runs and C.Archer made up for his 1st game trouncing, picking up the win as he struck out 13 batters in 7.2 innings.

Series Summary: A wild series. Chicago trounced Virginia in the first three games, out homering them 8-3, but then Virginia came bouncing back in the last three games as they crushed 10 homers to Chicago’s 3 in the 3 games to get the 3-3 split. Chicago batters had a field day during the series…
D.Santana – .458 11-24, 5 RBI
N.Cruz – .455 10-22 6 RBI 2 HR
N.Goodrum- .400 10-25 5 RBI 1 HR
A.Bregman – .360 9-25 6 RBI 2 HR
J.Votto – .357 10-28 8 RBI 2 HR
No Virginia player came close to those guys.

Game #1: Fremont jumps on Mike Foltynewicz for 4 runs in the 1st and never look back, winning 13-7. Both teams racked up 12 hits and 6 BB, but the Cannons made theirs count. Max Kepler homered twice to reach 25 on the season, while Austin Hays and Mike Yastrzemski also contributed home runs.
Game #2: Javier Baez doubles two Cannons home with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. An intentional walk, wild pitch, and another intentional walk loaded the bases, but Teoscar Hernandez flies out to end the threat.

Tempe stormed back in the fourth when Riley hit a Grand Slam and his 5th homer of the series. Recent pickup Howie Kendrick hit .478 and Justin Verlander went 2-0 with a 1.50 era and 23 SO in two complete games. Tempe swept behind an offense that was on fire.

Detroit Crime @ Yonge Street Stalkers

Game #1: YSS got to Strasburg a bit, then sloppy defense doomed DET late. Bryce Harper hit his 40th for DET and Kris Bryant his 30th for YSS. YSS 12 – DET 7
Game #2: Bumgarner kinda stumbled through 6+ innings, but Detroit had plenty of offense, paced by 2 doubles and 4 RBI from Schwarber and 2 homers and 4 RBI from Machado. To keep the road fans entertained, the Crime spread out their 17 hit barrage into 5 seemingly endless two-run innings. DET 10 – YSS 4
Game #3: Aaron Nola was strong (8 IP, 2H,2BB,10K,1ER). DET 10 – YSS 1

Game #6: A very nice bounce-back bookend start from Strasburg. CGSO. 2H,3BB,12K. DET 3 – YSS 0
Series Summary: 4 games to 2. The Crime was just too much for YSS in this series. Both squads are road-bound next week. DET visits FRE, while YSS heads to MCM.

Bethesda Bandicoots @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview: Bandicoots come to Columbus for a six-pack and end up making a big trade…
Game #1: Merrill Kelly gets the nod and after getting a 1-0 lead via a Kyle Seager homer (22) in the 2nd, he gives up 2 runs in the 3rd and 6th. But he gets help in the 5th on a solo homer by Nick O’Hearn (7). Then after Kelly leaves, Carter Kieboom homers (4) in the 8th making it 4-3. But J.B. Wendelken shuts them down to preserve the 4-3 win.
BET 3-7-1 LP Kelly (10-13)
COL 4-8-0 WP Jordan Lyles (14-4) S Wendelken (3)
Game #2: In another close one Jake Odorizzi (whose name keeps getting kicked around in trade talks) battled Homer Bailey in a classic pitchers duel. The Coots strike 1st in the 4th on a Trevor Story rbi single (another player who is being bantered around in trade talks). Columbus comes back for 1 in the 5th on a Dee Gordon rbi single. And in the 6th, Eric Haase singles in another run for a 2-1 lead. Liam Hendriks then gets asked to go 3 – and he goes 3 perfect innings (with 3 ks) for the save.
BET 1-4-0 LP Odorizzi (11-11)
COL 2-8-0 WP Bailey (14-6) S Hendriks (20)
Game #3: Finally a blowout – well not really, but it was 2 run win for the Explorers (instead of 1 run). Trent Thornton got the Coots start but struggled in the 1st giving up a 2 run double to Charley Blackmon. Turns out that was enough as J.A. Happ goes 8 innings, 4 hits, and 6 ks. The one blemish was a solo homer by Juan Soto (23) in the 8th which made it 3-1. Matt Shoemaker finally got a save pitching the 9th.
BET 1-4-1 LP Thornton (10-9)
COL 3-9-0 WP Happ (13-7) S Shoemaker (1)
Game #4: OK, this one was the blowout, 10-2 Columbus. A 4 run 1st was enough, but they got a 3 run 5th and a 2 run 7th. Coots got 10 hits, but only 2 runs – RBIs from Stephen Vogt and Matt Adams. But Tommy Milone didn’t have it on the mound giving up 5 hits and runs in 3 innings. D.J. LeMahieu hits 2 homers (15) and so does Charlie Blackmon (33) – his were both solo shots after LeMahieu cleared the bases on his 2 homers (5 RBIs).
BET 2-10-1 LP Milone (7-6)
COL 10-11-3 WP Julio Teheran (12-7)
Game #5: Rumors of a big deal went through the clubhouses on both sides and the fact that Trevor Story was held out for the game gave some good indications something was up. And the Explorers decided to score early, often, and many. Led by Charlie Blackmon’s 3 hit day (double, triple, homer (34) and 3 RBIs) Columbus scores 7 runs in the first 4 innings for a 7-1 lead. Mike Fiers left after 6 innings (gave up 1 run). The Coots teed off on Jose LeClerc in the 7th for 3 on a 2 run homer from Kyle Seager (23) and a solo homer from Ryan O’Hearn (8). Robinson Chirinos drove in another run (and then looked in the dugout and got the look that his time was limited and he might want to become familiar with the other side of the field).
BET 5- 7-2 LP Randy Dobnak (1-1)
COL 8-11-1 WP Fiers (9-8) S Magill (3)
Game #6: The finale was a rematch with Merrill Kelly and Jordan Lyles and Columbus scores 2 in the 1st and Bethesda scores 4 in the 2nd – Kevin Pillar rbi triple, Ryan O’Hearn rbi single and a Jeff McNeil 2 run homer (15). And that was all the scoring as Kelly went the distance tossing a 2 hitter and both runs in the 1st were unearned.
BET 4-8-2 WP Kelly (11-13)
COL 2-2-0 LP Lyles (14-5)
Series Summary: Columbus wins 5 of 6 and ends the series with 99 wins. And the team from Pittsburgh coming hard at them (and only getting stronger).
SO – Columbus did go manage a deal with Bethesda as the series moved into the 5th game. Columbus has bolstered their bullpen and got an upgrade at SS (though they hated parting with DeJong). Bethesda get some OF help along the way, plus some potential future gains.
The deal looks like this:
FM COL: Paul DeJong SS, Victor Reyes, OF; Josh Phegley, C; Luis Avilan, P; Dennis Santana, P; COL Round 1 and Round 2 picks
FM BET: Trevor Story, SS; Juan Lagares, OF; Robinson Chirinos, C; Adam Ottavino, P; Steve Cishek, P, BET Rounds 9 and 10 picks. We shall see how the future unfolds.
