Tijuana Bottle Rockets @ Southwest Detroit Fighting Chihuahuas

Series Summary: Southwest Detroit takes 5/6. Chris Paddock continues to dominate. J.D. Davis is a stud.

Harsens Island Walleye @ Bethesda Bandicoots

Series Preview: Is it too early to give up? Well, the Bethesda Bandicoots greeted division rivals with a sea of white flags flying in the outfield.
Game #1: Nolan Arenado provided some extra-inning heroics by blasting a mammoth homer through the left-field bleachers to drive in a couple of runs in a 6-4 win for Harsens Island.
The homer was Arenado’s 19th of the season and came off yet another crappy pitch when it mattered by John Gant (1-2).
Jeff McNeil drove in a couple of runs in the 7th for Bethesda with a pinch-hit triple.
Game #2: Robinson Chirinos’s turn to return the favor as he popped Michael Feliz’s fastball out of the park with a runner on for a walk-off 3-1 win for Bethesda.
Yay.
Nicky Lopez was 1/1 with an RBI and three walks for the Walleye. Anthony Rendon had two hits and scored a run for Bethesda. Fabulous.
Game #3: Gavin Lux provided all the offense the Walleye would need in this one with one swing of the bat in the 1st inning as his two-run shot and first homer of the season propelled the Walleye to a 3-1 win.
Leury Garcia had a couple of hits and scored a run for Harsens Island. Anthony Rendon had two of his own and drove in the lone Bandicoots’ run.
Kyle Wright evened his record at 2-2 with a solid 6.2 innings in which he struck out nine while giving up just four hits and three walks.
Mallex Smith continued to run free, stealing two bases to give him 29 on the year (and I think he was up to four steals in this series alone).
Game #4: David Peralta and Anthony Rendon homered to lift the Bandicoots to a 6-4 win despite getting outhit 15-8 by the Harsens Island Walleye.
Pretty much everyone for the Walleye had two hits, but only Adam Engel had one that went extra bases – this left the park in a big way for his 5th of the season. Mallex Smith swiped his 30th base of the season.
Game #5: Much closer on the scoreboard than it was in reality as the Bandicoots scored three times very late in the game to make it close but fell a run short as the Walleye triumphed 5-4.
Nolan Arendo (20) homered for the 2nd time in the series. Anthony Rendon got his 16th which was the only reason the game was close as this came in the 8th with two runners aboard.
Leury Garcia deserved mention for the second time this series as he went 3/3 with two runs scored and his fifth stolen base of the season.
Robinson Chirinos deserved mention for the Bandicoots although not in a good way as he was plonked in the melon by Harsens Island starter Eduardo Rodriguez and knocked out of action for a little more than a week to continue the parade of catcher-injuries Bethesda has been struggling with much of the season.
Game #6: Robinson Chirinos gleefully avoided being any part of this game as the Walleye stomped the Bandicoots 8-1 including a four-run 1st inning off alleged ace Sonny Gray.
The Walleye blasted four home runs in the game – two by Orlando Mercado (7) and one each by Nolan Arenado (21) and Omar Narvaez (10).
Gio Gonzalez (2-6) tossed six shutout innings to earn the win. He gave up two walks and five hits in the process but failed to strike out a batter.
Mercado, Arenado, and Johan Camargo each had three hits in the game. Scary to think what the score could have been if the Walleye could muster any other players whose name ended in “-o”.
David Peralta celebrated his arrival on the trading block by hitting his 5th homer – albeit absolutely worthless – of the season.
Series Summary: The Walleye were supposed to be the fish in this series but it was the Bandicoots that continued their hapless floundering as they drop four of six to an arguably less talented team on paper but one that is playing much better baseball.

Pittsburgh Lumber Company @ Triple Creek Patriots

Series Preview: NL East-leading Pittsburgh takes on 2nd place NL West Patriots for six.
Game #1: Triple Creek pounced on Young in the middle innings are he must have been tiring. Newcomb and company held a good Lumber team to just 2 runs on 6 hits.

PIT 2 TCP 5

W – Newcomb (3)
L – Young (2)
S – Buttrey (1)

Game #2: Pittsburgh built a nice 6-0 lead with scoring 2 runs in each of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The Patriots struck back for 2 runs of their own in the 4th and 5th to make it 6-4. Each team would score in the 8th and Triple Creek could only get within one. Patriots were on defense all day as Pittsburgh pounded out 15 hits. Their top 5 hitters collecting 9 of them. Braun would be lost for the next couple of games after getting drilled.

PIT 7 TCP 6

W – Yarbrough (4)
L – Gausman (1)
S – Giles (6)

Game #3: Lumber Company collected 15 more safeties today en route to a solid victory. Triple Creek plated a flock of runs but just couldn’t keep pace. Newman 3-5 and Bell 3-4 w/ 4 RBI paced Pittsburgh.

PIT 13 TCP 8

W – Hudson (5)
L – Strahm (3)

Game #4: After a much needed day off the Triple Creek staff performed much better. Odorizzi was solid but two costly Lumber Co. errors cost the game today.

PIT 2 TCP 4

W – Montas (5)
L – Odorizzi (5)
S – Workman (17)

Game #5: Bieber finally shows up! after 6 rather pedestrian starts Shane allows just 3 hits over 7 full. Triple Creek would solve Darvish late and torch him in the 6th and 7th. Villar delivered the big blow with a 3-run jimmy-jack.

PIT 1 TCP 6

W – Bieber (3)
L – Darvish (4)

Game #6: Braun and Villar each hit 3-run homers as this one would take extras. Tied 4-4 after regulation the pens were solid until the 12th, when Bummer would become his namesake, giving up a 2-run shot to Hiura.

PIT 4 TCP 6

W – Workman (2)
L – Bummer (1)

Series Summary: Triple Creek comes back, after down 2-1, to take the series 4-2 against a very good Pittsburgh squad.

Selkirk Steelers @ Long Beach Dirt Bags

Game #1: Encarnacion hit a 2 run HR to give Long Beach a 3-2 lead in the 6th. Woodruff struck out 10 over 7 2/3 and Neris got the last 4 outs as the Dirt Bags won 3-2. Woodruff also had 3 hits to lead the offense.
Game #2: Long Beach used the long ball to take a 6-1 lead and then held on to win 6-3. Bruce had 4 hits including 2 HRs and Turner added 3 hits and a 3 run HR to account for all the scoring.
Game #3: Winkler & Alonso hit 2 run HRs for Selkirk as they won 5-2. Gibson gave up 3 hits through 6 1/3 innings to get the win.
Game #4: Sanchez took a shutout into the ninth for Long Beach and won 5-1. Andrus & Diaz each had 3 hits and Sanchez helped his own cause with a run-scoring single. Turnbull was strong in a losing effort for the Steelers striking out 11 in 7 innings.
Game #5: Selkirk jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 3rd on a Torres 2 run single. Long Beach came back and tied it in the 7th at 3-3. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 12th when Turner hit a walk-off HR to give the Dirt Bags a 4-3 win. The Long Beach bullpen threw 6 innings of 1 hit ball to ensure the win.
Game #6: Semien had 3 2Bs and Wolters had a 2 run 2B to lead Selkirk’s offense in a 6-2 win. Fried and Senzatela combined on a 6 hitter in the win.
Game #7: Lynn threw a 2 hit, 13K shutout as Long Beach rolled 10-0 in the last game of the series. He also led the offense with 2 hits and 3 RBI and got a 2 run HR from Encarnacion and a 3 run bomb from Severino.
Series Summary: Long Beach takes 5 of 7 from Selkirk.

Dallas Cougars @ Virginia Sluggers

Series Preview: AL East leader Dallas travels to Virginia to take on an AL West also-ran.
Game #1: VIR 10-4 W-Chris Archer (5-6) L-Patrick Corbin (6-2)

Both teams came out slugging but Aramis Garcia capped a 6 run 5th with a grand slam that deflated Dallas.

Game #2: VIR 3-1 W-Luis Castillo (6-1) L-Chase Anderson (6-1)

Great pitching matchup but Castillo was a tad more stingy with a CG 4-hitter with 10 K’s. RBI singles in the 8th by Bryan Reynolds and George Springer accounted for the winning runs.

Game #3: DAL 13-12 W-Jose Alvarez (2-0) L-Jace Fry (2-2)

19 innings. A lot of pitchers. A back and forth game,…DAL tied it in the 8th, took the lead in the 12th, VIR tied it in the bottom half,…DAL took 4 run lead in 18th…3 homers from VIR tied it back up. Finally, DAL got 1 in the 19th and VIR ran out of gas.

Game #4: VIR 18-4 W-Adam Plutko (7-3) L-Logan Allen (3-6)

Slugger bats unloaded with a 22-hit attack. Jose Rondon (3-5 4 rbi and a HR) and Carlos Santana (3-5 3 RBI) led the offense.

Game #5: DAL 6-5 W-Lucas Giolito (4-3) L-Ryan Borucki (2-4)

A 6-run 5th highlighted by Ramon Laureano’s 2-run blast held up for a DAL win as the pen held on to preserve the win.

Game #6: VIR 6-0 W-Chris Archer (6-6) L-Patrick Corbin (6-3)

Archer’s game. CG, 9 innings, 5 hits, 0 runs, 11 K’s. Carlos Santana hit his 2oth and Eloy Jimenez (6) and Aramis Garcia (6) also went deep for VIR.

Series Summary: Virginia brought their bats and came close to a sweep but fell just short, taking the series 4-2.
Carlos Santana – 10-25 .400 BA, 7 runs, 11 RBI, 3 HR

Detroit Crime @ Hollywood Werewolves

Series Summary: Hollywood takes 5 of 7 from Detroit. 4 of 5 wins were shutouts.

Manhattan Project @ Chicago Mobsters

Game #1: Chicago can’t get anything going offensively and the Project does just that scoring 9 Runs. J.T. Realmuto is 3 for 4 with 4 Runs Scored, 3 RBI’s, Double & a Home Run. Rick Porcello found the fountain of youth & goes 7 Innings allowing a lone Run.

Final Score: Manhattan 9 – Chicago 0

Game #2: Well, Chicago found their bats, or they took the Project’s bats. Alex Bregman was 3 for 4 with 4 Runs Scored, a Double & Homerun & 3 RBI’s. Nelson Cruz was 3 for 4 with 2 Runs Scored, a Double, 2 Homeruns & 4 RBI’s. Rookie Yordan Alvarez had a Homerun & knocked in 5 RBI’s. Marcus Stroman went the distance in a Complete Game Shutout.

Final Score: Chicago 14 – Manhattan 0

Win: C.C. Sabathia 7-1 (4.10)
Loss: Trevor Richards 4-3 (4.68)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #14

Game #4: Daniel Ponce de Leon was solid for 7 Innings allowing only 1 Run, & the bullpen shut it down the rest of the way for Chicago Dexter Fowler Homers & has 2 RBI’s for the Mobsters.
Final Score: Chicago 14 – Manhattan 0
Win: Daniel Ponce de Leon 2-1 (4.62)
Loss: Bret Anderson 4-4 (3.13)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #15
Game #5: Jake Marisnick is 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s including a Homerun. Miguel Cabrera was also 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s including a Homerun. Both players were on Chicago’s roster for just a hot minute in the offseason & came back to put a hurting on the Mobsters.

Final Score: Manhattan 6 – Chicago 3

Win: Trevor Richards 5-3 (4.54)
Loss: Noah Syndergaard 5-4 (4.00)
Save: Scott Oberg #8

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Manhattan 1

Win: Trevor Bauer 6-6 (4.74)
Loss: Rick Procello 2-2 (3.16)
Save: Aroldis Chapman #16

Series Summary: Chicago wins the series but really felt as though the Project did. Chicago played Ok, & the Manhattan team, even though decimated by injuries they held on & took 2 of 6 from Chicago.

Jersey Nor’easters @ Columbus Explorers

Series Preview: Jersey takes the trip West to Columbus for a 6 game set. Last week the Explorers threw 2 no-hitters – this week, they just try to keep the winning streak (11) going….
Game #1: Nor’easters take the early lead 1-0 on a 2 out Jose Ramirez rbi single in the 3rd. They hold that lead until a 3 run Desmond homer (7) in the 6th. Renato Nunez homers (6) leading off the 7th, Columbus gets that run back in the bottom half. Then in the top of the 9th with 2 outs, Jake Bauers connects off Liam Hendrick making it 4-3 Explorers, but Hendricks shuts the door to preserve the win.
JNE 3-8-1 LP Jahn Means (1-5)
COL 4-8-0WP Dario Agrazal (6-1) S Hendricks (7)
Game #2: This game pretty much ended in the 5th when Columbus bagged 5 runs which were sandwiched by 2 in the 4th and 2 in the 6th. Enrique Hernandez had a big day with 2 hits, 5 rbis, a homer (5). Matt Carpenter logged 3 rbis as well. Rougned Odor hit a solo homer in the 1st (11 homers but batting .170) and he also drove in another run and had 3 hits on the day.
JNE 3- 7-1 LP Marco Gonzalez (4-2)
COL 10-14-9 WP J.A. Happ (4-3)
Game #3: With a day off looming, the Nor’easter decided they weren’t going to be swept and ended the Columbus win streak at 13 with a decisive 10-6 victory. The big damage came in a 6 run 6th where an Eric Haase passed ball led to 3 unearned runs. Of course, Jersey already had a 7-1 lead, but with Tommy Pham up, he strikes out, Haase let’s the ball jump (actually sprouted legs and jumped) out of his mitt. The ball ran to the back stop, Pham ran to 1st and beat the throw, runner moves to 3rd. Next batter, grounds out scoring 1 and then Jose Ramirez homers (6) making it 10-1. A 9th inning rally by Columbus closed the gap to 10-6, but it never was that close. Didi Gregorius also homered in the game (8). The winning pitcher, Dinelson Lamet was 2 for 3, with 2 runs and 2 rbis and 2 DOUBLES. And for a pitcher with no plate appearances, he has a GREAT BATTING card, including home run possibilities!!
JNE 10-11-2 WP Lamet (3-3)
COL 6-10-0 LP Julio Teheran (6-3)
Game #4: A day off to rest the bullpens and the Explorers score in each of the 1st 4 innings (1-1-1-2) and build a 5-2 lead and hang on to win 6-4. Charlie Blackmon(14) and Matt Carpenter (7) go deep, Jordan Lyles kicks in 2 hits and a rbi and 4 relievers preserve his win. Tommy Pham cracks a 2 run homer (11) and Kole Calhoun adds a solo shot (7).
JNE 4- 8-0 LP Adbert Alzolay (0-1)
COL 6-11-1 WP Lyles (6-1) S Hendricks (8)
Game #5: Well, if you want to beat Columbus it’s good to silence their bats – especially on days when you score runs. Well, that’s what Mike Soroka did in this game. He goes 7 innings giving up 3 hits and just one run – Matt Carpenter solo homer (8) in the 5th. At the time, it put Columbus up 1-0. But surprise spot starter Tim Melville ran out of gas in the 6th, and the Nor’easters pounced on him. It started with a Kole Calhoun solo homer (8) and ended with a 2 run ph single from Tyler Naquin as they score 4 runs. They get a 5th in the 7th and that was it as Craig Stammen and Josh Hader mopped up in the 5-1 Jersey win.
JNE 5-8-0 WP Soroka (5-5) S Hader (9)
COL 1-5-1 LP Melville (3-1)
Game #6: We reach the finale with Columbus already taking 3 of 5 games, but they didn’t want a split in the series. However, Jersey had other plans and they punctuated those plans with a 5 run 2nd inning! No homers in this game, but an Eric Haase error in the 2nd allowed 5 unearned run off Dario Agrazal (another surprise this season). Rougned Odor singles in 2 run (and has upped his batting average to .172 by the end of this series!!). Jake Bauers gets 2 hits, including a double) and drives in one. But then lightning strikes in the form of Paul DeJong! In the 5th, he blasts a 3 run homer(11) as Columbus scores 4 to tie the game. Then in the 7th, what looked like an easy inning for Michael Lorenzen ends up as a nightmare. Matt Carpenter gets a 1 out walk, but Charlie Blackmon whiffs. Then Gio Urshela hits a routine grounder to Rougned Odor who flips to Didi Gregorius at 2nd, but the ball misses Didi and Carpenter is safe. Of course, that extends the innings and Paul DeJong comes up and slams another 3 run homer (12) and the Explorers jump to an 8-5 lead which Matt Shoemaker and Liam Hendricks hand on to. Although for Hendricks it was a bit tough. After a Gordon Beckham lead off single, Tommy Pham grounds into a DP. Odor then draws a walk and Jose Ramirez follows with an infield single. But finally, Hendricks is able to fan Kole Calhoun. These 20* and ups sure have their moments!
JNE 5-10-2 LP Lorenzen (0-1)
COL 8- 9-1 WP Yusmeiro Petit (2-2) S Hendricks (9)
Series Summary: So, it boiled down to a 4-2 series win for the Explorers who continue to stay in games they should be out of. Late inning run scoring continue to excel. Next week, Columbus goes to Portland and the Nor’easter stay in the Central division and visit Selkirk.

Southbend Lynx @ Motor City Muscle

Series Preview: Southbend @ Motor City for 6 games.
Game #1: MCM 5 – SBL4

WP: Verlander (CG)
LP: Walden
HR: MCM–Ahmed (GS), Arcia; SBL–Forsythe, Escobar

Nick Ahmed’s grand slam gave MCM the early lead, but SBL tied it. Orlando Arcia’s 8th inning solo shot was the difference.

Game #2: SBL 12 – MCM 3

WP: F. Peralta
LP: Hendricks
HR: SBL–Joyce (2), Muncy (2), Canha; MCM–Ahmed

Matt Joyce set the tone with a HR to lead off the game (he’d hit another later), and Max Muncy had a pair as well. SBL scored early, late, and often. Freddy Peralta didn’t need to, but he struck out 14 in six innings.

Game #3: SBL 7 – MCM 5

WP: Walden
LP: J. Wilson
SV: Osuna
HR: MCM–Ahmed (2), A.Garcia; SBL–Muncy (GS), R. Martin

MCM took a 5-3 lead into the 9th inning. With one out and and runners on second and third, Jose Altuve was walked intentionally so incoming lefty Justin Wilson could face a couple lefties with a chance at a double play. Wilson struck out Austin Meadows, but couldn’t get past Muncy, who deposited a fastball over the wall for a game-winning grand slam. Nick Ahmed’s fourth homer (in three straight games) goes for naught.

Game #4: SBL 6 – MCM5

WP: Samardzija
LP: Davies
SV: Osuna
HR: SBL–R. Martin, Muncy, Meadows; MCM–Arcia

South Bend continues the HR barrage for their third straight win. Max Muncy homers in his third straight game.

Game #5: MCM 3 – SBL 1

WP: de Grom (CG)
LP: D. Holland
HR: MCM–A. Garcia

Jacob de Grom dominated, striking out 11 and not giving up a run until the 8th inning.

Game #6: MCM 6 – SBL 2

WP:R. Hill(CG)
LP: Pivetta
HR: SBL–Meadows, Escobar; MCM–Bemboom

Rich Hill was the big story, striking out 15.

Series Summary: BL and MCM split the series
All three MCM wins were complete games for MCM starters
Nick Ahmed (MCM) and Max Muncy (SBL) both hit HRs in three straight games, with a two-homer game. Matt Joyce also had a two-HR game
SBL hit 14 HRs, MCM hit 9

Portland Lumber Jax @ Tempe Tempers

Series Preview: Portland visits Tempe for seven.
Series Summary: Tempe’s bats appear to be waking up as they take 6 of 7. Freeman and J.D. Martinez are finally both hitting above .200 now. Elflin pitched a complete game for Portland’s only win of the series.

Coconut Creek Crushers @ Fremont Cannons

Series Preview: Fremont comes in having regained a bit of confidence after a series win in Chicago. Coconut Creek is in a full-on rebuild.
Game #1: Sandy Alcantara and the Fremont bullpen hold Coconut Creek to two hits as the Canons romp 10-1. Javier Baez homered twice, and solo homers were hit by Willians Astudillo, Max Kepler, Khris Davis, and Kyle Higashioka.
Game #2: Fremont took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first and would tack on an insurance run in the sixth to win 3-1. James McCann went 3-4 in the win.
Game #3: The Fremont bats came to play again in the 10-3 Cannons victory. Danny Duffy improves to 4-4, and each of Yulieski Gurriel, Teoscar Hernandez, and Joshua Rojas would leave the yard.
Game #4: Joe Musgrove allowed 11 hits but limited the damage to 3 runs thanks to 10 strikeouts. The Crushers bats would only score two runs themselves, though, falling 3-2. Derek Norris improves to 7-1 on the season.
Game #5: Fremont chased Drew Pomeranz after just one inning, going on to win 13-5. 4 errors by the Cannons would not come back to haunt them. Javier Baez, Teoscar Hernandez, and James McCann all went deep for the home team.
Game #6: Another strong Fremont offensive performance would force out Blake Snell in the fifth, and the Cannons win the finale 8-2. Coconut Creek only musters 3 hits. Max Kepler, Teoscar Hernandez, Mike Yastrzemski, and Kyle Higashioka all homered for Fremont, while Christian Walker homered for the Crushers.
Series Summary: Fremont gets a confidence-boosting 6-0 sweep. The Crushers were out-homered 16-2, and Fremont was able to rest many of their key pieces.

Mesa Solar Sox @ Yonge Street Stalkers

Series Preview: Mesa (22-30) visits Yonge Street (22-30). Let the fireworks begin.
Game #1: Eugenio Suarez homered twice and plated 5. MSS 7 – YSS 6 (10)
Game #2: An exciting game. Grichuk was injured for 5 days. MSS 10 – YSS 9 (11)
Game #3: YSS snuck a bullpen game in and snapped their skid. 2 errors meant that none of MSS’ runs were earned. YSS 6 – MSS 4
Game #4: The 3rd extra inning game of the series saw MSS win their 3rd such game. MSS 4 – YSS 3
Game #5: The home squad found a bit of offense. YSS 12 – MSS 5
Game #6: A perfect MWBL affair. Aaron Sanchez exits this game with a 1-6 record buttressed by a 10.02 ERA. Gentleman…I present the most recent pitcher to throw a NO HITTER! MSS 12 – YSS 0
Game #7: YSS rode Gerrit Cole hard and took the finale. YSS 6 – MSS 4
Series Summary: The home team was no hit and lost 3 extra inning games. They won the other 3. Overall, pretty frustrating.
