Tempe Tempers @ Jersey Nor’easters

Series Summary: The same old story playing Tempe. The Tempers take the series 5-1. In-Game 5 Cole Hamels throws a 1-hit shutout winning 3-0. The Nor’easter’s only win came in game 6 behind Mike Soroka’s 7 shutout innings as he wins a tight one 2-1.

Dallas Cougars @ Mesa Solar Sox

Series Preview: 1st place Dallas comes to the southwest to pummel the Solar Sox.
Game #1: Are you kidding me??? Mesa’s James Paxton outduels Dallas’s ace Lucas Giolito, hurling a one-hitter, striking out nine, walking one and shutting out the Cougars 2-0!!! Giolito strikes out 14 Sox but Randall Grichuck reaches him for a solo homer.
Game #2: Another pitchers duel! This time Dallas gets the shutout from Patrick Corbin, a three-hitter. Andrew Heaney lets Charlie Culberson go deep off him for the games only run. Dallas 1-0
Game #3: Blake Swihart goes long twice and drives in 3! Hunter Dozier adds a solo shot. Dallas all over Mesa 7-2.
Game #4: A back and forth slugfest with three homers for each side. Dallas comes out on top 9-8, courtesy of a Carlos Gonzalez 3 run 7th inning homer. Smoak and Solarte also homer for Dallas. Marte, Rosario, and Garver all homer for the Solar Sox in a losing effort.
Game #5: Back to back to back homers for the 3rd time this season for Mesa!! Suarez, Rosario, and Grichuk do the deed this time. Mesa, behind Anthony Kay’s strong 7 innings, win 7-1.
Game #6: Giolito comes back to win the finale with 8 innings. He struck out 12 and gave up no runs. Pollack homered in the 14 hit attack, which included a 6 run 1st inning off Aaron Sanchez. Dallas wins 9-3.
Series Summary: Giolito Ks 26 in his 2 starts. Dallas takes 4 of 6. Completely expected results considering the depth of these two squads.

Series Summary: Motor City takes the series 4-2.

Series Summary: Sacramento wins the series 5-2.

Manhattan Project @ Yonge Street Stalkers

Series Preview: Manhattan invades Yonge Street. Two very tired teams fighting a losing battle against fatigue. I’m only writing about the first ridiculous game. 🙂
Game #1: A tone-setter. A tight, well-pitched game. The Project’s number 4, 5, and 6 hitters combined to go 0-24 with 14 Ks. That might sound bad, but the rest of the Manhattan squad wasn’t about to go down without a fight. Jose Iglesias struck out twice for the visitors and was the low man in the K column. To recap. Wong led the way with 6 Ks. Edman, Realmuto, and Santander chipped in with 5 apiece. Goodwin, Cabrera, and Choi tossed in 4 each. Adrianza was the lone man with 3. Added to Iglesias pair, that means 9 Manhattan hitters struck out 38 times. IN THE OPENING GAME!! Tommy Edman hit a solo shot to open up the 21st inning and Adam Cimber 6th scoreless inning of relief made it stick. MAN 3 – YSS 2 (21)

P.S. The tired teams combined to use ONE pinch hitter in a 21 inning game.

Series Summary: I just wanted to repeat that Manhattan struck out 38 times in the opening GAME and came away a winner. The 2 teams combined to strike out a whopping 61 times in the 21 inning affair. After that opener, the home team pretty much fell apart. YSS managed one win out of 6.

Detroitroit Crime @ Southbend Lynx

Series Preview: Detroit travels into Southbend for a 6 games series. A rematch of last year’s AL Championship Series. Can the Southbend bats continue to produce against better quality pitching and can the pitching hold up against the Detroitroit hitters.
Game #1: In the T1 Detroit Gardner leads off with a 2b and scores 1 out later on a Schwarber rbi-2b. Southbend Joyce answers with a solo-HR in the B1 to tie the game at 1-1. Detroit Strasburg and Southbend Yamamoto & Moronta toss scoreless innings through the T7. In the B7 Southbend Mayfield breaks the tie with a solo-HR. Southbend Moronta, Duffey, and Osuna hold Detroit at bay from the 6th on to close out the game. Osuna notches his 15th save.

Southbend 2, Detroit 1

Game #2: Starting pitching was the story in this game. The Southbend pitching continued to hold the Detroit offense in check as Southbend Foltynewicz tosses a 1-hit shutout, giving up 2 walks and fanning 4. The lone Detroit hit came in the T3 on a Crawford infield single. Detroit Minor is almost as good, giving up only 3 hits in 7IP while fanning 5. Minor’s lone mistake was a fastball that Southbend Muncy hit for a solo-HR in the B4.

Southbend 1, Detroit 0

Game #3: Detroitroit breaks out of its funk in the T1 when with 2 outs Schwarber 2bs and Harper follows with a 2-run HR. In the B1, not to be outdone, Southbend Canha and Meadows hit back-to-back solo-HRs to tie the game at 2-2. In the T2 Detroit Jones reaches on Forsythe’s throwing error and C.Hernandez mashes a 2-run HR. In the B4 Southbend Muncy 2bs and Escobar ties the game with a 2-run HR. Detroit Nola settles down and along with May and Hudson keeps Southbend from scoring through the 8th. Southbend gets the same results from Pivetta and Walden. In the T9 Southbend bring in Osuna and after 1 out, C.Hernandez hits a solo-HR (his 2nd of the game) to break the tie. In the B9 Britton comes on for Detroit and Southbend Escobar leads off with a 2b, after PH K.Tucker F9, Owings reaches on Crawford’s error. But Britton is able to get Joyce to hit into a 5-4-3 DP to end the game.

Detroit 5, Southbend 4

Game #4: The Detroitroit offense would come alive in this game. The scoring opens in the T2 when Jones 1bs, Hernandez 2bs, a Martin PB gives up a run, a Belt rbi-groundout; Martin then boots Gardner’s pop-up, Machado 1bs, and Voit’s rbi-1b make it 3-0 Detroitroit Detroit would put another run across in the T5, 2 in the T6, and 3 in the T7. The big hits being a Voit 2-run HR in the 6th and a Gardner 2-run HR in the 7th. The Southbend lone run comes on a Forsythe solo-HR in the B8. Detroit Bumgarner is dominant going 7IP, giving up 0 runs, and fanning 7 for his 8th win.

Detroit 9, Southbend 1

Game #5: For the second time in the series, a Southbend starter tosses a 1-hit shutout. This time it’s Southbend Samardzija who flirts with another no-hitter through 5.2 innings. Detroitroit Gardner spoils things with a 2b. Samardzija finishes the game giving up the 1 hit along with a walk, and 5 Ks. Southbend got to Detroitroit Bassitt in the B3 when with 2 out Cave bbs, Altuve hits a 2-run HR, and Meadows follows with a solo-HR. Southbend gets two other token runs later in the game to close out the scoring.

Southbend 5, Detroit 0

Game #6: Detroit again follows its previous shutout by scoring in the T1 when Gardner 2bs and Schwarber hits a 2-run HR. Detroit extends its lead in the T2 when Jones bbs and Hernandez hits a 2-run HR for a 4-0 Detroit lead. But the Southbend come storming back in the B2; Bichette bbs, Joyce 2bs, and Canha bbs to load the bases. Viloria hits a sac fly to RF and Strasburg’s control continues to elude hit as Altuve bbs to load the base again. Southbend K.Tucker then makes Strasburg pay as he clubs a Grand Slam to give Southbend a 5-4 lead! In the B3, after Harper pegs Muncy at 3rd, Joyce rbi-2b scores Escobar to extend the Southbend lead. Southbend adds 1 more in the B5 on a Muncy solo-HR. On the other side the Southbend bullpen of Walden, Moronta, Duffey, and Osuna shut down the Detroit offense after the 2nd inning to nail down the Southbend win.

Southbend 7, Detroit 4

Series Summary: Southbend is very pleased and surprised to have won the series 4-2. Overall a close series with 3 -1 run games and 1 3-run game. A couple of timely runs by Detroit in the close games could’ve flipped the series easily.

Pittsburgh Lumber Company @ Valdosta Snappers

Series Summary: Things were going great for the Snappers, having won 3 of the first 4 games. Then the slumbering giants woke up and Pittsburgh scored 25 runs on 38 hits in the final 2 games to tie the series 3-3. Felix Hernandez continues to struggle as he allowed 4 HR’s in an inning and a third (and 15 already on the year) and sees his ERA balloon to 6.75. Rumor is that he is hiding some kind of injury and may be sent down this week.
