Triple Creek  Patriots @ Columbus  Explorers

Series Preview: Triple Creek comes to Columbus for the week to see the sights (and play some baseball). They are currently tied with Long Beach in the NL West and fighting for a Wild Card spot. Explorers are also in the Wild Card battle (because they have the privilege of looking up at the Tempe Tempers – it’s a long view to the top. Otherwise, Columbus is having a good year. They made one more deal this week that will aid their infield defense, picking up D.J. LeMahiu.
Game #1: The opening game goes to Columbus – primarily due to the 6 runs they scored in the 2nd – should have been 7, except for Victor Reyes’s baserunning gaff. As noted elsewhere, he was called out on an Alex Avila homer when Avila passed him on the basepath. Reyes thought the ball was caught and was returned to 1st – but the ump signaled homer, neither runner was looking for the other one. Avila was credited with a single and he scored as did Ian Desmond and Alex got 2 rbis. Charlie Blackmon goes on to hit a grand slam in the same inning. The score got close in the 7th when Triple Creek scored 3 – but a 3 run 8th for Columbus settled the score.
TCP 4- 7-0 LP Jacob Nix ()
COL 9-12-2 WP J.A. Happ (13-2)
HRs: TCP – Daniel R. Robertson (6); COL – Blackmon (15)
Game #2: Excitement in this came from Glenn Sparkman tossing a 3 hit CG shutout, fanning 10! Explorers get another Grand Slam – this one from Alex Avila (1) – he was still a bit perturbed from not getting credited with a homer in yesterday’s game (it would have been his 1st for the year). Brock Holt chipped in with 2 hits and 3 rbis.
Hunter Wood got the “opener” assignment in this one and pitches a great 1st inning, fanning two. Miller IV’18 then pulls him to start the 2nd and brings in Addison Reed – he pitched 2 innings well, then went all to pieces giving up 9 hits and 8 runs in the 4th and 5th. Wood, by the way, has tossed 20.1 scoreless innings this year – 6 hits and 20Ks!
TCP 0- 3-1 LP Reed (0-1)
COL 8-13-0 WP Sparkman (3-2)
HRs: COL – Avila (1)
Game #3: Down 2-1 after the top of the 7th, the Explorers finally solve starter Kevin Gausman and score 4 times in the bottom half. Asdrubal Cabrera homers twice for the home team – 3 rbis. However, the Patriots haven’t surrendered and Marwin Gonzalez touches off a 2 run shot in the 8th to close it to 5-4. But Columbus tacks on 1 more in their half of the 8th and David Robertson shuts the door in the 9th for the save.
TCP 4- 8-0 LP Kevin Gausman (4-5)
COL 6-11-0 WP Jimmy Yacabonis (3-2) S Robertson (12)
HRs: TCP – Gonzalez (4); COL – Cabrera 2 (16, 17)
Game #4: Triple Creek finally unloads, banging out 12 hits, 3 homers and scored 9 runs! And Shane Bielber scatters 8 hits in 6 innings, giving up 1 run (in the 1st) and that was it for Columbus. Lourdes Gurriel smacks a grand slam. Albert Almora homes, doubles, singles and drives in 2. Andrew Benintendi homers to drive in 2.
TCP 9-12-1 WP Bieber (7-3)
COL 1-11-1 LP Wade LeBlanc (6-8)
HRs: TCP – Almora (4), Gurriel (6), Benintendi (10)
Game #5: OK, we have a wild one here that goes 10 innings. Stephen Piscotty takes Julio Teheran deep for 2 in the 3rd. Columbus answers with 3 in their half, then add 2 more in the 4th. But the Patriots open up the scoring gap by plating 5 in the 5th – key blow a 3 run homer by Jonathan Villar. Up 7-5, they see that lead drop to 7-6 in the bottom half. Then Columbus ties it with another run in the 6th. Scores stays knotted at 7-7 until the bottom of the 10th, 2 outs and Charlie Blackmon hits a walk-off homer off McGee to end the game and give Columbus the 8-7 win.
TCP 7- 9-0 LP Jake McGee (0-1) 10 Innings
COL 8-16-0 WP David Robertson (3-1)
HRs: TCP Piscotty (14), Villar (10); COL – Blackmon (16)
Game #6: In the series finale – Jacob Nix takes a no-hitter into the 6th. Then the Explorers tag him for 6 hits and 5 runs including a 2 run Asdrubal Cabrera homer and Ryan Zimmerman 2 run triple. And that was ALL the Columbus offense – no other hits or runs. Triple Creek scored 1st with a solo Lourdes Gurriel homer in the top of the 5th. They add another run in the 6th on an Albert Almora SF – but that was the end of their offense. This was the only game in the series where Columbus had single digit hits.
TCP 2-4-0 LP Nix (3-5)
COL 5-6-1 WP J.A. Happ (14-2) S Drew Steckenrider (1)
HRs: Gurriel (7); COL – Cabrera (18)
Series Summary: Columbus takes 5 of 6 and now takes to the road for a week heading out to Long Beach to face another NL West 2nd place team. Triple Creek keeps their suitcases in tow and goes to Corktown (do they stuff their bats in Corktown??).
